IoT Meeting @ AoIR 2017
by Leonie Tanczer 25 Aug '17

25 Aug '17

Dear All, My name is Leonie Tanczer. I am part of the PETRAS Internet of Things (IoT) Research Hub (https://www.petrashub.org) PETRAS is a consortium of nine UK universities working together over the next years to explore critical issues in privacy, ethics, trust, reliability, acceptability, and security of the IoT. Due to this background, I was wondering if there would be an interest in organising an informal meeting for researchers working on/ or interested in the IoT at the upcoming AoIR conference in Tartu. I would envision this meeting to be of relevance to scholars studying smart cities, smart health devices and services, connected and autonomous vehicles, to IoT’s regulatory, security and privacy challenges. The list is certainly not exhaustive, but hopefully gives an indication of the many IoT-related research projects that are taking place across the globe. While I acknowledge the breadth of the term 'IoT', I thought it might be useful to touch base with others who are active in this realm and/or who feel somewhat associated with it. If you are interested in participating in such a get-together, please do get in touch with me (l.tanczer(a)ucl.ac.uk) I’d be delighted to hear more about other international IoT research hubs, projects, and scholars and gladly coordinate a meeting. I am looking forward to hearing back from you. With best wishes, Leonie _______________________________ Dr Leonie Maria Tanczer Research Associate | Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy | University College London Twitter: @leotanczt | Website: http://www.leonietanczer.net/ Key Fingerprint: 9F21 A6A6 913E 1393 1BC6 73DA EBEF 07A4 F61F 79DA Recently Published: Tanczer, L., McConville, R., & Maynard, P. CFP AAG 2018: Platform Urbanism
by Scott Rodgers 24 Aug '17

24 Aug '17

Platform Urbanism Call for Papers/Panellists Association of American Geographers Conference 2018 New Orleans, USA, 10-14 April 2018 Organizers Susan Moore (University College London) Scott Rodgers (Birkbeck, University of London) Sponsors Digital Geographies Specialty Group Media and Communication Geography Specialty Group Urban Geography Speciality Group Outline Talk about ‘platforms’ is today all-pervasive: platform architecture, platform design, platform ecosystem, platform governance, platform markets, platform politics, platform thinking. But just what are platforms? And how might we understand their emergent urban geographies? As Tarleton Gillespie (2010) argues, the term ‘platform’ clearly does discursive work for commercial entities such as Facebook, Amazon, Uber, Airbnb and Google. It allows them to be variably (and often ambiguously) described and imagined: as technical platforms; platforms for expression; or platforms of entrepreneurial opportunity. Indeed, as emergent spaces, platforms – both commercial and nonprofit – entail so many ambitions, activities, services, exchanges, forums, infrastructures, and ordinary practices that conceptualizing their general dynamics is difficult, perhaps even pointless. Yet platforms do appear to have considerable implications, geographical as well as political. For Benjamin Bratton (2015), cloud-based platforms such as Facebook, Amazon and Google form a fundamental layer of what he calls planetary-scale computation, perhaps representing new forms of geopolitical sovereignty. This ‘sovereignty’ is, however, neither generalized nor homogeneous: in manifests in geographically uneven intensities and extents. This session invites original research and conceptual reflections that explore, debate and critique the notion of an emergent ‘platform urbanism’. Recently, Nick Srnicek (2016) deployed the phrase ‘platform capitalism’ to encapsulate his argument that platforms not only mark a new kind of firm, but a new way of making economies. Here – in a move similar to Henri Lefevbre’s (1970/2003) in The urban revolution – we suggest a speculative substitution of ‘urbanism’ for ‘capitalism’, placing an emphasis on the possibility of irreducible, co-generative dynamics between platforms and the urban. Contributions may address a wide range of commercial and nonprofit platforms – including those related to social networking, user-generated content, location-based technologies, mapping and the geoweb, goods and services, marketing, and gaming – and their relationships with various forms of urban living and urban spaces. Expressions of Interest We intend to organize 1-2 paper sessions, depending on quantity and quality of submissions, followed by a panel discussion session. Expressions of interest must be emailed to both Susan Moore (susan.moore(a)ucl.ac.uk<mailto:susan.moore@ucl.ac.uk>) and Scott Rodgers (s.rodgers(a)bbk.ac.uk<mailto:s.rodgers@bbk.ac.uk>) by 1 October 2017. Those proposing a paper presentation should send an abstract of 250 words; those interested in participating as a panellist should include a short outline of their intended contribution in their email. Data Skills Survey
by Demirkol N.O. 23 Aug '17

23 Aug '17

Dear all, Do you use data for research investigations, advocacy work or journalism? We want to help you by identifying barriers to working with data and ways to fill skills gaps. Data Skills Survey: https://bournemouth.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/data-skills-survey Bournemouth University's Datalabs (http://www.civicmedia.io/datalabs/) and the Centre for Investigative Journalism (http://www.tcij.org/) have a successful history of supporting people in data-based research for a range of purposes including journalism, advocacy, academic papers and community activism. However, support for these skills can be difficult to accurately tailor to different audiences. By taking just ten minutes to complete this survey, you can help us enable more people from more diverse backgrounds to move their research forward by engaging effectively with data tools and the open data movement. The incorporation of our research findings will be an important step towards building a more flexible provision of training, teaching and support that can be adapted to the needs of a range of different roles and organisations. Such progress will be necessary if open data transparency is ever to be translated into governmental accountability. Take the Data Skills Survey: https://bournemouth.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/data-skills-survey? Thank you all for your attention. All the best, Ozlem Demirkol

CFP: Slow computing: A workshop on resistance in the algorithmic age (Maynooth, Ireland December 14, 2017)
by Kalpana Shankar 23 Aug '17

23 Aug '17

Posting for a colleague: http://progcity.maynoothuniversity.ie/2017/08/cfp-slow-computing-a-workshop… *Call for Papers* *One-day workshop,* *Maynooth University, Ireland, **December 14th, 2017* * Hosted by the Programmable City project at Maynooth University Social Sciences Institute and the Department of Geography* In line with the parallel concepts of slow food (e.g. Miele & Murdoch 2002) or slow scholarship (Mountz et al 2015), ‘slow computing’ (Fraser 2017) is a provocation to resist. In this case, the idea of ‘slow computing’ prompts users of contemporary technologies to consider ways of refusing the invitation to enroll in data grabbing architectures – constituted in complex overlapping ways by today’s technology services and devices – and by accepting greater levels of inconvenience while also pursuing data security, privacy, and even a degree of isolation from the online worlds of social networks. The case for slow computing arises from the emerging form and nature of ‘the algorithmic age.’ As is widely noted across the sciences today (e.g. see Boyd & Crawford 2012; Kitchin 2014), the algorithmic age is propelled forward by a wide range of firms and government agencies pursuing the roll-out of data-driven and data-demanding technologies. The effects are varied, differentiated, and heavily debated. However, one obvious effect entails the re-formatting of consumers into data producers who (knowingly or unwittingly) generate millions of data points that technology firms can crunch and manipulate to understand specific markets and society as a whole, not to mention the public and private lives of everyday users. Once these users are dispossessed of the value they help create (Thatcher et al 2016), and then conceivably targeted in nefarious ways by advertisers and political campaigners (e.g. see Winston 2016), the subsequent implications for economic and democratic life are potentially far-reaching. As such, as we move further into a world of ‘big data’ and the so-called ‘digital economy,’ there is a need to ask how individuals – as well as civil society organizations, small firms, small-scale farmers, and many others – might continue to make appropriate and fruitful use of today’s technologies, but while also trying to avoid becoming another data point in the new data-aggregating market. Does slow computing offer a way to navigate the algorithmic age while taking justice seriously? Can slow computing become a part of diverse strategies or tactics of resistance today? Just what are the possibilities and limitations of slow computing? This one-day workshop invites participation from scholars, practitioners, artists and others who might be exploring these, or other related questions, about slow computing. Papers might contain explorations of: - Slow computing practices (whether using auto-ethnography, ethnography, or other qualitative or quantitative methodologies); - How slow computing technologies could be designed for private or public institutions; - The challenges facing actors who try to unplug, shield, or silo data or other products of social life from the digital economy; - The socio-political possibilities emerging from efforts to avoid data-grabbing architectures; - Efforts to raise awareness about the privacy implications of contemporary data-grabbing technologies. Confirmed keynote speaker: Prof. Stefania Milan <https://stefaniamilan.net/>, University of Amsterdam Those interested in participating should send a proposed title and abstract of no more than 250 words to Dr. Alistair Fraser – alistair.fraser(a)mu.ie – by *September 29th 2017*. Informal enquiries about the workshop can also be sent to the co-organizer, Prof. Rob Kitchin: rob.kitchin(a)mu.ie -- Kalpana Shankar Professor of Information and Communication Studies Head of School 2015-2018 School of Information and Communication Studies University College Dublin Belfield 4 Dublin +353(1) 716-8359 kalpana.shankar(a)ucd.ie
