pens, pencils, styli?
by Charles M. Ess 31 Aug '17

31 Aug '17

Dear AoIRists, It has gradually come to my lagging attention that pens, pencils, and/or styli seem to be making a bit of comeback? Roughly: Microsoft introduced a Surface Pen in 2012, which interacts with various capabilities in the 8.1 and the most recent 10 OS; Apple introduced its Pencil for the iPad in 2015 - one that works with Microsoft apps as well as Adobe and others; Microsoft; and Lenovo offers a pen technology (either in Android or Windows OS) with one of its recent devices - <http://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/tablets/android-tablets/yoga-book-series/Lenov…> (Thanks to Rich Ling for the last tip.) I'm also aware of a growing body of research on handwriting vis-a-vis keyboarding that appears to show that engaging the body via hand and pen, in contrast with solely using a keyboard, entails greater brain activity and thereby greater cognitive benefits, including greater ability to discern and articulate complex conceptual relationships, along with greater recall. (E.g.: A. van der Meer, F.R. van der Weel, Only Three Fingers Write, but the Whole Brain Works: A High-Density EEG Study Showing Advantages of Drawing Over Typing for Learning. Front. Psychol., 09 May 2017. https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2017.00706) My resulting questions: 1) are you aware of any additional research along these lines, i.e., attending to the affordances and potentials of both handwriting and keyboarding vis-a-vis cognitive benefits - especially with a view towards pedagogy, i.e., how we should teach writing, most especially writing for research and publication? 2) Any ideas of what research and/or other interests, etc. might have led Apple, Microsoft, and Lenovo to re-introduce pens and styli - apart from the death of Steve Jobs, who notoriously hated these? (I mean this respectfully.) Please reply off-list. I'll happily compile a bibliography and resource list for distribution to the list in turn. Digital Society Network @ University of Sheffield annual lecture: 'New media, old inequalities', Shakuntala Banaji, LSE, Monday 9th October 4.15pm
by Helen Kennedy 30 Aug '17

30 Aug '17

*New media, old inequalities: Approaching youth, creative politics and digital media across social class, gender and geography* Dr Shakuntala Banaji, London School of Economics Monday 9th October, 4.15 – 5.30pm (followed by book launch & drinks reception), LT4 The Diamond, University of Sheffield Over the past seventeen years my research around young people, politics and creativity has interrogated the role and affordances of new and emerging digital media in processes of social change. From refugee children connecting with their peers across Europe through ICQ chat in 2002, through youth activists in Europe and India deploying social media in politically progressive or retrograde ways, to young female gamers in the MENA region selectively hiding and revealing their gender via avatars and play talk during MMOGs, one common thread has been the ways in which digital media creates spaces for new politics and new agencies whilst also hiding or entrenching structural inequalities. But to what extent are we simply doing the digital wrong? Could its technical affordances be used to overcome systematic hierarchies, at least online? Do its social affordances simply enhance the agency of particular social classes in the global south? And are there ways in which the narrative of the digital in liberation politics has become yet another enemy of those seeking deeper social structural transformation? My lecture will attempt to answer these questions in the context of findings from several major comparative research projects in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa over the past decade. *Respondents: *Professor Dorothea Kleine, Theme Lead, Digital, Data and Innovation, Sheffield Institute for International Development, and Department of Geography, University of Sheffield ( http://siid.group.shef.ac.uk/team/prof-dorothea-kleine/) and Dr Michalis Kontopodis, School of Education, University of Sheffield (*www.sheffield.ac.uk/education/kontopodism <http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/education/kontopodism>*). The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception and a launch of the book *Global Youth in Digital Trajectories* (2017) edited by Michalis Kontopodis, Christos Varvantakis and Christoph Wulf (*www.routledge.com/9781138236035 <http://www.routledge.com/9781138236035>* ). *Biography* Dr Shakuntala Banaji is Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Media and Communications at LSE. She is Programme Director for the Master’s in Media, Communication & Development and teaches about world cinema, audiences, international media and the global south. She is Principal Investigator on the ‘Personalised Media and Participatory Culture’ project and UK project director for the Horizon 2020 CATCH-EyoU project. Ongoing research addresses the intersection between socio-political contexts, old and emerging media, identities and participation, with a focus on the lives of children and young people in different geographical and class contexts. Imagining the Internet: Fiction, Film, and Theory course reading query
by Jillana Enteen 29 Aug '17

29 Aug '17

Hi folks, I’m updating an undergrad Gender and Sexuality Studies course (so, basically, all readings need to be from a slant of gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, or location). It’s going from undergraduate live to online graduate-level. Any suggestions for important theoretical readings from these lenses? Films include: Johnny Mnemonic, Nerve, Terms and Conditions May Apply, Ex-Machina and She. Fiction include cyberpunk and IRL by Doctorow and Wang. What important essays or collections have made a recent impact? I feel like I’m stuck in the past. Thanks, in advance, for any suggestions! I’m happy to compile a list. Techfestival in Copenhagen from 5.-10. September 2017
by Sebastian Felix Schwemer 29 Aug '17

29 Aug '17

Dear all Sebastian here from CIIR in Copenhagen. Last year, I initiated together with some good people Techfestival Copenhagen (techfestival.co), which this year is going to take place from September 5th to 10th in the central Meatpacking District – and I thought this could be of interest to some of you. The aspiration is “real talk” on technology and society and there is a tons of interesting stuff going on during the day and in the evening (talks, summits, meetups, concerts, exhibitions…) on subjects such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, cybersecurity, food technology and more. Most of the programme is accessible via a wristband (You can get a free one with the following link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/techfestival-2017-tickets-35349777135?discount… – NB: not me who created the discount code). Let me know if you plan on coming around, I am happy to put you in touch with the specific event organisers according to your research interests. Hi all, I’m participating in a seminar called ‘History in the Age of Trump’ and am gathering resources (websites, articles, podcasts, online discussions etc) highlighting the problems we face in securing ‘facts’ and evidence today, along with strategies for accessing reliable evidence and sources on the internet. I’d be grateful for any recommendations and thoughts from the AIR-L community. Survey Reminder! Please Help Me With an Organizational Use of Social Media Marketing Survey!
by Ming-Yi Wu 29 Aug '17

29 Aug '17

Dear All, Greeting! I teach social media classes at Northeastern University. I am now conducting a survey (with IRB approval) to explore organizational use of social media marketing. If you are familiar with your organization’s usage of social media, please feel free to fill out this short, anonymous online survey! Please also feel free to forward the survey link to your colleagues or friends who are familiar with this area. It may take 5-6 minutes to complete the online survey. Your inputs and help will be highly appreciated! Organizations (B2C, B2B, or Non-Profit) with different sizes are qualified. One person company is qualified, too. They key is that the organization is using social media, such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, to communicate with key audience, such as students, alumni, customers, consumers, and donors. The results of this study will have both academic and practical values. I plan to use the findings to develop course materials for my social media classes. In addition, the findings of this study may be presented as a conference paper or published as an academic article. This survey is anonymous. Your participation is voluntary. If you are interested, please click the link. https://neu.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eRILadzNBpjySEZ When you participate, please click the arrow to proceed! Thank you in advance! Slightly odd request for research on vlogging
by Sophie Helen Bishop 29 Aug '17

29 Aug '17

Hi my name is Sophie, I am a 3rd year PhD Student at University of East London in the department of Arts and Digital Industries. My research is looking at the (highly gendered) space of vlogging (video blogging) on YouTube, focusing on the mythology of vlogging as an entrepreneurial pursuit, or as a pathway to creative industries in the UK. As part of my field work I would *love *to go to the YouTube Space in London. As many will probably know, this is a massive studio space run by Google, that holds workshops, training sessions and provides studio space for the UK's vlogging elite. As part of the 'elite' nature of this resource, you need 1000 subscribers (or followers) to even set foot in the door and attend an event (you need 10,000 subscribers and 100,000 respectively for most of the resources). Any suggestions or contact introductions would be incredibly helpful. I have contacted YouTube through any channel that is advertised, drained any Google adjacent contacts I have and even walked into the Space to realise there is no reception desk and it's all basically automated. So, as someone who has no institutional or network links to Google, the only creative and roundabout way I can think of right now is to get 1000 subscribers on my YouTube Channel. I don't have the time (or the content) to actually build my subscriber base to this level so I am asking the kindly space of AoIR if you would consider subscribing to the channel. I do not need you to watch my content, or find me interesting in any way, this is purely an access issue (the things you do for access!). I don't make many videos so it shouldn't bother you. You can subscribe if you have a Google account, and it is the red button in the top right hand corner of the page. Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/sophiehelenbishop Thank you for reading this slightly odd request, and I hope you are all enjoying your summers. Please contact me with any questions. Best wishes, Sophie -- Sophie Bishop PhD Candidate, Arts and Digital Industries, University of East London www.sophiebishop.co.uk | @sophiehbishop
