CFP: Information Ethics Roundtable 2018
by Sille Obelitz Søe 29 Aug '17

29 Aug '17

Dear colleagues, We are pleased to announce the call for participation in the 16th annual Information Ethics Roundtable (IER 2018) – and the first edition of the conference in Europe! Please see detail below. Best wishes, Sille ------------------------------------------------ Information Ethics Roundtable 2018 Surveillance, Algorithms, and Digital Culture University of Copenhagen, Denmark May 17-18, 2018 Proposals Due: February 5, 2018 Notification of Acceptance: March 5, 2018 Full papers due: April 23, 2018 http://www.ier2018.info/ The 16th annual Information Ethics Roundtable (IER) will explore the interconnections and interdependencies between Surveillance, Algorithms, and Digital Culture that exist in the contemporary information society. Our daily lives and activities take place in digital media; information provision is highly personalized; decision-making is guided (automated) by the use of algorithms, machine learning, and artificial intelligence; personal information is traded on the information market by platforms and data brokers; and surveillance, in many forms, is increasingly pervading both the public-facing and more intimate aspects of our daily lives. In the 2018 edition of IER, we seek proposals that approach these interconnections and interdependencies through the lens of information ethics (writ large, to include those working in multiple fields and with differing methods). The Information Ethics Roundtable (held annually since 2003) is a yearly conference that brings together researchers from disciplines such as philosophy, information science, communications, public administration, anthropology, and law to discuss ethical issues such as information privacy, intellectual property, intellectual freedom, and censorship. Proposals for IER 2018 should be situated within the general field of information ethics (although participants are expected to come from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds) and, ideally, should connect two or more of the following areas of inquiry: - Surveillance, privacy, and/or data protection
 - Algorithms, machine learning, and/or artificial intelligence (AI) - Digital culture, digital media, social media, and/or other forms of digital media (non-)use
*Proposal requirements* We invite two types of proposals: (1) Papers: please submit a 500-word abstract of your paper. If accepted, you are expected to submit a full paper prior to the Roundtable, and you will be presenting the paper at the conference. The paper will not be stored in a public repository or published in proceedings. (2) Panels: please submit a 1500-word description of your panel. The description should include: i) description of the topic, ii) biographies of the panel members, ii) organization of the panel. It is a requirement that panels focus tightly on a specific emergent topic, technology, phenomena, policy, or the like, with clear connections between the presentations. Proposals should be sent to: sille.obelitz(a)hum.ku.dk Please include the subject line: “IER 2018 proposal” We are also interested in receiving expressions of interest to serve as a commenter/discussant for another person’s paper, as each author with an accepted paper will be paired with a commenter who will provide formal feedback and comments during the conference (after the initial paper presentation; discussants will be included in the official conference program). Expressions of interest should be sent to: sille.obelitz(a)hum.ku.dk by April 16, 2018, although decisions will be made on a rolling basis after March 5, 2018 (the paper notification deadline). Please include the subject line: “IER 2018 commenter.” *Deadlines* Submission of Proposals (papers and panels): Monday February 5, 2018 Notification of Acceptance: Monday March 5, 2018 Full Paper Deadline: Monday April 23, 2018
Registration Deadline: Friday May 4, 2018 Conference Dates: Thursday & Friday May 17-18, 2018 More information on conference website: http://www.ier2018.info/ Sille Obelitz Søe, PhD Post.doc. CfP: International ZeMKI conference "The Mediatization of Time: New perspectives on media, data and temporality" (deadline Sept. 1)
by Dr. Leif Kramp 29 Aug '17

29 Aug '17

*** sorry for cross-posting *** CALL FOR PAPERS International ZeMKI conference "The Mediatization of Time: New perspectives on media, data and temporality" 7-8 December 2017 ZeMKI, Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research University of Bremen, Germany Recent innovations in the digitalization and datafication of communication fundamentally affect how people conceptualize, perceive and evaluate time to create the kind of world they live in. The conference invites participants to think through the interplay of media and data in respect of the way social time is constructed, modulated, and experienced. This allows to appreciate how new technologies and representations deeply affect the temporal organization of today’s media suffused societies, and it also sheds light on transformations in mediating time. We assume that mediatization as a fundamental societal change that interweaves with the development and spread of communication and information technologies leaves its mark on the ways we process and order the pace, sequence, rhythms and of social reality. This conference invites to think through the role of media and data people have or had at hand to time their interactions, relations, and states of being. It encourages submissions related to the mediation of time and the timing of media(ization), and includes, but is not restricted to, the following themes: - Transformativity of mediatization processes: How can we grasp the historically changing mediation of time and the relation to diachronic processes of mediatization? What are the dynamics between the transforming construction of time and the ongoing formation of mediatization? - Temporality and mediation of time: Are there temporal affordances of media and how do they influence the experience of mediated time? What time principles characterize today’s media-saturated life? How do media technologies relate to the various temporalities of media practices? - Memory and the rearrangement of the tenses: What temporal meanings are generated by the media? How are media used in order to knit together past, present and future? Please send a 300-word abstract, along with your name, e-mail address, academic affiliation, and short bio to: mediatizedtime(a)uni-bremen.de Abstract submission deadline: September 1, 2017 Acknowledgment of acceptance: September 15, 2017 Conference dates: December 7-8, 2017 Confirmed speakers include: Staffan Ericson (Södertörn University): Mediatization in Time; Andreas Hepp (University of Bremen): Datafication and Temporal Media Practices; Johan Fornäs (Södertörn University): Media as Third-Time Tools; Helge Jordheim (University of Oslo): Modes of Synchronization; Emily Keightley (Loughborough University): Zones of Intermediacy; Irene Neverla (University of Hamburg): Media/Time Rhythms; Elizabeth Prommer (University of Rostock): Work, Time, Media; Espen Ytreberg (University of Oslo): Networked Simultaneities. The conference is organized by Christian Pentzold and Christine Lohmeier from the ZeMKI, Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research, University of Bremen in cooperation with Anne Kaun, School of Culture and Education, Södertörn University, Stockholm. Re Galen Panger's comment on the list: "I actually thought the article was hyperbolic, and I felt disappointed to see it get so much attention. I think there is reason for some concern, I would have liked to see the evidence presented less selectively and one-sidedly." Heartedly agree. Keith Hampton and I have an article asserting that each generation thinks that community has been lost as compared to the previous one. Now, it is mobile phones. Two decades ago, it was the internet. You can keep tracing this back to Tommy Jefferson in 1787. And perhaps further. PLSC-Europe 2018 Call for Papers
by Imge Ozcan 25 Aug '17

25 Aug '17

*With the usual apology for cross-posting* PLSC-EUROPE 2018 CALL FOR PAPERS PLSC-Europe 2018 will be held in Brussels on Saturday 27 January 2018, right after CPDP2018 (http://www.cpdpconferences.org) CPDP - Computers, Privacy & Data Protection conference - is an annual gathering of academics, lawyers, practitioners, policy-makers, industry, and civil society from all over the world. Its 11th edition, "The Internet of Bodies", will take place from Wednesday 24 January to Friday 26 January 2018. PLSC-Europe will follow on Saturday 27 January 2018. Based on the popular Privacy Law Scholars Conference (PLSC) event in the United States, PLSC-Europe is dedicated to bringing together privacy law scholars, practitioners, and privacy scholars from other disciplines from across Europe and beyond to discuss current issues. PLSC-Europe aims at fostering greater connections between academia and practice (industry, legal, advocacy, and government), and at bringing together law scholars with academics and professionals from other disciplines (e.g. economics, philosophy, political science, computer science). The first PLSC-Europe was held in October 2015 in conjunction with the Amsterdam Privacy Conference, and the second one in May 2017, in conjunction with TILTing Perspectives 2017. From 2017 onwards, PLSC-Europe became a regular event co-organized by the University of Amsterdam (IvIR), Tilburg University (TILT), and the Free University Brussels (LSTS/Privacy Salon), alternating between Amsterdam, Tilburg, and Brussels. The third edition of PLSC-Europe will be held on 27 January 2018 in Brussels. PLSC is a paper workshop. Papers are not available, and proceedings will not be released. The papers discussed are works in progress, and so will not be publicly released, nor publicized: the ideas presented by the authors are often still developing, and need further incubation before being finalised. In a PLSC paper workshop, a "commenter" leads a discussion among participants on an author's paper. Authors are encouraged to listen to the discussion, rather than steer it or participate actively to it. There are no panels or keynotes at PLSC: the idea is to help the author by giving feedback and advice on the paper. Workshops are informal and friendly in nature. CALL FOR ABSTRACTS – PLSC-EUROPE 2018 We welcome the submission of abstracts on both pure and multidisciplinary legal scholarship on privacy and data protection. Please submit your abstract through the following link: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=plsceurope2018 If your abstract gets accepted for the paper workshop, you will be required to deliver a full draft before the conference, to allow participants to read the paper in advance. Key Dates * Abstract submission: 29 September 2017 * Abstract acceptance: 27 October 2017 * Workshop draft due: 22 December 2017 * Workshop: 27 January 2018 PLSC-Europe 2018 is jointly organised by Research Group on Law, Science, Technology and Society (LSTS) at Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Privacy Salon. -- Imge Ozcan Doctoral Researcher Research Group on Law, Science, Technology & Society (LSTS) Vrije Universiteit Brussel Join us for the next edition of the CPDP conference on 24 - 26 January 2018 in Brussels: http://www.cpdpconferences.org/ [1] Links: ------ [1] http://www.cpdpconferences.org/
