IRC log analysis software
by Ogden J.R. 07 Aug '17

07 Aug '17

Hi all - I’m looking for CAQDAS recommendations and/or pointers towards literature for analysing large sets of IRC logs. I began using NVivo but the load times with several years and channels of logs has made this a bit untenable. As my study is qualitative, my main priority is using something that allows me to use open coding, but automated coding/query retrieval is also desired - particularly to auto-code usernames (a function NVivo did quite nicely). Secondary priorities would be on text mining capabilities for topic tracking/analysis, for which I’ve found quite a bit of literature outlining. I currently have the data in CSV but if need be I can convert or retrieve in alternative formats. Any suggestions very much appreciated, many thanks in advance! CfPs: ACM IUI 2018 (Tokyo, Japan)
by Christoph Trattner 07 Aug '17

07 Aug '17

*** Please forward to anyone who might be interested *** --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Papers: ACM IUI 2018 to be held in Tokyo, Japan, 7th-11th March 2018 http://iui.acm.org/2018/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ACM IUI 2018 is the 23rd annual meeting of the intelligent interfaces community and serves as a premier international forum for reporting outstanding research and development on intelligent user interfaces. In 2018, IUI will be held in the Hitotsubashi Hall in central Tokyo Japan from March 7th - 11th and will co-locate with the Japanese IPSJ Interactions conference. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI), with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design or the arts. Our focus is to improve the interaction between humans and machines, by leveraging both more traditional HCI approaches, as well as solutions that involve state-of-the art AI techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. ACM IUI welcomes contribution from any relevant arena: academia, business, or non-profit organizations. Along with 25 other topics in AI & HCI, this year we especially encourage submissions on explainable intelligent user interfaces for IUI 2018. ** Why you should submit to ACM IUI ** At ACM IUI, we focus on the interaction between machine intelligence and human intelligence. While other conferences focus on one side or the other, we address the complex interaction between the two. We welcome research that explores how to make the interaction between computers and people smarter, which may leverage solutions from data mining, knowledge representation, novel interaction paradigms, and emerging technologies. We strongly encourage submissions that discuss research from both HCI and AI simultaneously, but also welcome works that focus more on one side or the other. The conference brings together people from academia, industry and non-profit organizations and gives its participants the opportunity to present and see cutting-edge IUI work in a focused and interactive setting. It is large enough to be diverse and lively, but small enough to allow for extensive interaction among attendees and easy attendance to the events that the conference offers, ranging from oral paper presentations, poster sessions, workshops, panels and doctoral consortium for graduate students. - IUI topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Affective and aesthetic interfaces - Big Data and analytics - Collaborative interfaces - Education and learning-related technologies - Evaluations of intelligent user interfaces - Explainable intelligent user interfaces. - Health and intelligent health technologies - Information retrieval and search - Intelligent assistants for complex tasks - Intelligent wearable and mobile interfaces - Intelligent ubiquitous user interfaces - Intelligent visualization tools - Interactive machine learning - Knowledge-based approaches to user interface design and generation - Modeling and prediction of user behavior - Multi-modal interfaces (speech, gestures, eye gaze, face, physiological information etc.) - Natural language and speech processing - Persuasive and assistive technologies in IUI - Planning and plan recognition for IUI - Proactive and agent-based user interaction - Recommender systems - Smart environments and tangible computing - Social media analysis - User Modelling for Intelligent Interfaces - User-Adaptive interaction and personalization ** Dates ** 1st Oct, 2017: Abstract deadline (compulsory) 8th Oct, 2017: Papers deadline 7th Dec, 2017: Notification 21st Dec, 2017: Camera ready due 7th Mar, 2018: Conference starts ** Submission - Full and Short Papers ** We invite original paper submissions that describe novel user interfaces, applications, interactive and intelligent technologies, empirical studies, or design techniques. We do not require evaluations with users, but we do expect papers to include an appropriate evaluation for their stated contribution. Accepted papers will appear in the ACM Digital Library and citation indices. A selected set of accepted top quality full papers will be invited to submit their extended versions for publication in an ACM Transactions on Interactive Intelligent Systems (TiiS, http://tiis.acm.org) special issue titled "Highlights of IUI 2018". ** Submission Guidelines ** - Full paper (anonymized 10 pages, references do not count toward the page limit) should make substantial, novel, and relevant contribution to the field. - Short paper (anonymized 4 pages, references do not count toward the page limit) is a much more focused and succinct contribution to the field. Short papers are not expected to include a discussion of related work that is as broad and complete as that of Full papers. - Anonymization: ACM IUI uses a double-blind review process. All submissions must be appropriately anonymized according to the following guidelines: -- Author’s names and affiliations are not visible anywhere in the paper. -- Acknowledgements should be anonymized or removed during the review process. -- Self-citations should be included where necessary, but must use the third person. For example, "... as shown in our previous user study [2] ... " is not allowed, whereas "... as shown in Smith et al. [2] " is acceptable (because in this case the citation [2] will NOT be perceived as self-citation). - Failure to follow these guidelines may result in submissions being rejected without review. - Authors should also be aware of the SIGCHI Policy for Submission and Review at SIGCHI Conferences, see: http://www.sigchi.org/ conferences/Conferences%20Policies/chi-review. - Submissions should follow the standard SigCHI format. Use either the Microsoft Word template (http://www.sigchi.org/publications/chipubform/ sigchi-paper-format-2016/view) or the LaTeX template ( https://github.com/sigchi) Accepted full papers will be invited for oral presentation. Accepted short papers will be invited either as oral or poster presentation, depending on the nature and quality of the paper. ** AUTHORS TAKE NOTE ** The official publication date is the date the proceedings are made available in the ACM Digital Library. This date may be up to two weeks prior to the first day of your conference. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work. (For those rare conferences whose proceedings are published in the ACM Digital Library after the conference is over, the official publication date remains the first day of the conference.) ** Chairs - program2018(a)iui.acm.org ** - Margaret M. by Artur Lugmayr 07 Aug '17

07 Aug '17

================================================================================================= Call for Papers, Abstracts, Demos and Posters 1st Workshop on ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE MEETS VIRTUAL AND AUGMENTED REALITIES AI-VR-AR 2017 in conjunction with SIGGRAPH ASIA 2017 27th-30th November 2017 Bangkok, Thailand http://aivr.ambientmediaassociation.org The workshop intends to attract a broad range of contributions to develop this scholarly field during a full day venue. We invite scholars and practitioners to discuss synergies between virtual and augmented reality (VR & AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). The aim is to gather a cross-disciplinary team of experts with a background in computer science, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), psychology/cognitive sciences, culture/communication studies, design and art to develop this fascinating intersection. The aspects to discuss range from user-experience, technologies applications, methods, cultural implications, communication theories, to artistic approaches. Workshop Highlights: - Workshop proceedings published in a Scopus indexed series - Best papers are published as part of an edited book or journal special issue with high level publisher - Submission deadline: 15 August, 2017 ================================================================================================= While AI's main aim is to replicate human intelligence, AR and VR focuses its research efforts on the creation of artificial worlds either in complete virtual world, or as part of our physical environment. Many examples that bridge the two fields have emerged recently, e.g. intelligence in digital games, utilization of computer graphics hardware for deep learning and AI, emotional and affective interaction, etc. Thus, while AI and VR/AR went rather distinct research pathways, we attempt to bring them together, and discuss different aspects at the intersection of machine intelligence and human interaction in a mixed reality. We raise the question: what happens when artificial worlds start to think, and we humans interact with it? We would like to follow up the philosophical discussions around issues such as what happens when things start to think, and Alan Turing's works. In this workshop, we would like to raise a question: what would happen when artificial worlds start to think, and how we humans can interact and communicate with AI through e.g. affective interfaces? As our emphasis is on creating the synergy between VR/AR and AI/ML, we are not limited to particular areas; instead, the following exemplary topics might help to gather ideas for a possible contribution: affective and emotional computation, communication with AI, digital game analytics, utilization of computer graphics hardware for deep learning, personalization and recommender systems, UX with agents and physical robots, cultural robotics, or AI in information visualization. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TOPICS OF INTEREST (BUT NOT LIMITED TO) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ * Artificial Intelligence and machine learning in VR/AR * Emotions and AI in VR, AR, and smart objects * Human-Computer-Interaction with AI in virtual worlds * Digital games and artificial intelligence * How do humans communicate with AI * Emotion enriched human-AI collaboration * AI in digital games and other application areas * User-Experience and interaction with AI * Intelligent interaction with robots and physical objects * Visualisation of cultural data * Affective human-virtual world interaction * Design of emotionally intelligent AI * Recommender systems and personalisation in VR, AR * Information visualisation and AI and ML * Communication theory and cognitive science * Affective ambient intelligence in mixed realities * UX with AI agents or physical robots * AI based emotion mediated communication in VR/AR * Tools for authoring emotional intelligence in VR/AR * Multimodal affective interfaces in VR/AR * Human-human emotional communication in VR/AR * Cultural robotics The workshop proceedings will be published in a Scopus indexed proceedings series with an ISBN number as part of the Semantic Ambient Media Experience (SAME) workshop series. The very best contributions will be published in an edited book from a highly reputable publisher which has been pre-arranged. Please note that only selected high quality contributions will be published as part of the edited book. However, during the workshop a common journal article co-authored between all workshop participants will be published as an introduction chapter. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ IMPORTANT DATES ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 15/08/2017: Deadline for workshop papers 21/08/2017: Notification of accepted workshop papers 31/08/2017: Camera ready workshop papers 29/09/2017: Registration for the Workshop 27/11/2017: Workshop Day ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ SUBMISSION GUIDELINES ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The workshop program stretches over a full-day, and will contain a combination of invited keynote presentations, oral presentations, posters, and demonstrations. We are calling for paper submissions of extended abstracts between 2-5 pages long, following the submission format of SIGGRAPH Asia's style template. Please choose one of the three submission categories: * Abstract: 1-2 pages long * Short paper, demo, or poster: 2-4 pages long * Long paper: 4-6 pages long Please download the paper template from: https://sa2017.siggraph.org/submitters/submission-information?faqitem=accor… The copyright form can be downloaded from: http://www.visemex.ambientmediaassociation.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/C… Your submission should include: scanned signed copyright form + original contribution in word or latex + pdf of the paper Please do NOT include the ACM copyright strip (first page, bottom left) into your submission Add ALL your files (copyright form, word document/latex files, scanned copyright form) into ONE zip file. Search Tool for Hashtags within Specific Instagram User Accounts?
by Megan Wahl 05 Aug '17

Dear All, I am a current PhD candidate conducting Instagram research and was referred to this list serve by my professor. I am hoping you can assist in a quick question I have as I develop the methods section of my dissertation. For a portion of my study, I am requesting access to (if not already public) participant Instagram accounts of those enrolled. From participant Instagram feeds, I would like to search for and identify the number of images with a particular hashtag as well as the top 10 images with that hashtag based on number of likes. Is there a tool you are aware of that I could use to extract this sort of data for specific user accounts vs the entire Instagram platform? I'm familiar with the hashtag searching functions on platforms such as Netlytic but would like to narrow the search functionality to only the Instagram accounts of those participants in my sample. Thank you in advance for any suggestions/insights you may have! Sincerely, Megan Megan M.
