In his new book, Will the Internet Fragment?, Professor Mueller argues that the fragmentation diagnosis misses the mark, and the rhetoric of fragmentation camouflages the real issue: the attempt by governments to align information flows with their jurisdictional boundaries. The fragmentation debate is really a power struggle over the future of national sovereignty, pitting global governance and open access against traditional territorial institutions of government. This conflict, the book argues, can only be resolved through radical institutional innovations. In order to save the internet, we need to move away from national sovereignty and towards popular sovereignty in cyberspace. Call for Participation: AoIR Early Career Scholars Workshop We are building a global community of junior scholars within AoIR - join us at AoIR 2017 - Tartu!! When: October 18th, AoIR 2017 preconference afternoon session Organizers: Jeff Hemsley (Syracuse University), Andrea L. Guzman (Northern Illinois University), Esther Chin (Swinburne University of Technology), Efrat Daskal (Hebrew University of Jerusalem), Zachary J. McDowell (University of Illinois Chicago) Audience: This workshop is geared toward early career scholars who have their terminal degree and are working toward establishing themselves in a scholarly career. We have worked to create a workshop that is reflective of AoIR’s international membership and the different type of academic and research institutions represented. (Please note: Students should apply to the Doctoral Colloquium). Goals: 1) Provide a space for the next generation of AoIR scholars to start building strong ties with each other, more established researchers, and the AoIR community. 2) To promote understanding of the breadth of academic work, including our shared experiences and differences. 3) Connect with established academics to learn strategies for forwarding our careers. 4) Gain insight into how to formulate similar workshops in future years that support the need for mentoring early scholars in the AoIR community. Call for papers: NORDICOM Review (OPEN ACCESS) Making sense of small and big data as onlife traces Special issue editors: Anja Bechmann, Associate Professor at Aarhus University & Visiting Assoc. Professor at UCI and Kjetil Sandvik, Associate Professor at University of Copenhagen. Onlife designates the transformational reality that in contemporary developed societies, our offline and online experiences and lives are inextricably interwoven (Simon & Ess 2015). Our onlives produce digital traces or footprints, some of which are produced before birth by our parents and continue to exist even after our death (in the shape of registers, bank accounts, social media profiles etc.). This special issue of Nordicom Review examines and discusses how we create meaning in and make sense of small and big data as onlife traces. The fields of qualitative and quantitative studies are often depicted as each other’s counterpart. Yet, when researchers study onlife as a way of conceptualizing the digital layer of our lives, we meet similar obstacles. One of the major questions is how can we infer meaning from the digital traces made by the user to the actual use/praxis or partial to the human(s) behind (incentives, motives, needs)? This is a classical methodological question within communication and behavioural studies that has a renewed interest in the digital social sciences as we discover methodological trajectories into the onlife, be it studies of Internet of Things, apps (e.g. social media, games, self-trackers), or other digital communication and behaviours as traces of digital sociology. Both small and big data studies approaches have tried to ‘solve’ this problem of inference by suggesting triangulation as methodological approach. Within big data studies more data on more users, multiple data points or data over a longer time span on the same user are used to create more ‘clear signals’ and to strengthen the predictions of the motives, ideologies, incentives, and needs of a specific user. Qualitative studies use for instance multisided ethnography and methodological triangulation to heighten the validity of findings when it comes to clearly understand the user and the use behind onlife traces. In a time where user data have become sharable and tradable commodities and where governments, media, health and financial sectors build actions and decisions on top of predictions inferred from data traces of human communication and behaviour in digital spaces it is maybe more important than ever to understand and discuss not if we can make a solid one-to-one interpretation, but how we can advance our inferences or at least explicitly discuss in various studies how we have solved or coped with this issue by advancing our research questions, our methodological approaches, philosophical background or conceptual understanding. We are interested in papers that study onlife empirically and – in this connection – discuss the methods used to infer meaning from data traces to the usage or users behind. Furthermore, we are looking for empirical studies that use and discuss methods to extract meaningful (sociological) findings out of small and big data and discuss the methodological challenges in doing so. We are also looking for philosophical and theoretical contribution (on e.g. AI reasoning) and historical contribution tracking methodological or theoretical conceptualizations of ‘meaning’ and sense-making in combination with traces of use within the framework of understanding digital traces in a sociological perspective. Furthermore, we encourage ethnographic papers studying developers’ work processes when extracting meaning from massive data and acting on top of such predictions. Contributions are not expected to ‘solve’ the ‘meaning’ problem, but by sampling a selection of papers that explicitly discuss this issue in various empirical contexts we hope the special issue can point to further directions in the field of digital sociology. As such, contributors are urged to relate their proposals to the concepts of meaning- and sense-making taking into account that meaning-making is more than a methodological, theoretical and philosophical concept: it is related to how we empirically propose understandings of big as well as small data. (as several of the editors had life events happen, and we need around 20-30 more chapters before our deadline, we are having a another round for the CFP) Call for Abstracts for Chapters Volume 2 of the International Handbook of Internet Research (editors Jeremy Hunsinger, Lisbeth Klastrup, and Matthew Allen) Abstracts due July 17; full chapters due Sept. 1 2017 After the remarkable success of the first International Handbook of Internet Research (2010), Springer has contracted with its editors to produce a second volume. This new volume will be arranged in two sections, that address one of two different aspects of internet research: foundations, and futures. Each of these meta-themes will have its own section of the new handbook. Foundations will approach a method, a theory, a perspective, a topic or field that has been and is still a location of significant internet research. These chapters will engage with the current and historical scholarly literature through extended reviews and also as a way of developing insights into the internet and internet research. Futures will engage with the directions the field of internet research might take over the next five years. These chapters will engage current methods, topics, perspectives, or fields that will expand and re-invent the field of internet research, particularly in light of emerging social and technological trends. The material for these chapters will define the topic they describe within the framework of internet research so that it can be understand as a place of future inquiry. We value the way in which this call for papers will itself shape the contents, themes, and coverage of the Handbook. We encourage potential authors to present abstracts that will consolidate current internet research, critically analyse its directions past and future, and re-invent the field for the decade to come. Contributions about the internet and internet research are sought from scholars in any discipline, and from many points of view. We therefore invite internet researchers working within the fields of communication, culture, politics, sociology, law and privacy, aesthetics, games and play, surveillance and mobility, amongst others, to consider contributing to the volume. Initially, we ask scholars and researchers to submit an 500 word abstract detailing their own chapter for one of the two sections outlined above. The abstract must follow the format presented below. After the initial round of submissions, there may be a further call for papers and/or approaches to individuals to complete the volume. The final chapters will be chosen from the submitted abstracts by the editors or invited by the editors. The chapter writers will be notified of acceptance within 2 weeks. The chapters will be due September 2017, should be between 6,000 and 10,000 words (inclusive of references, biographical statement and all other text). UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA FACULTY OF EDUCATION New Media and Learning Technologies in Education (tenure-track Instructor) The Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a tenure-track educational leadership position at the rank of Instructor in New Media and Learning Technologies in Education. The appointment is expected to commence January 1, 2018 (or as negotiated with the successful candidate). The workload for a tenure-track Instructor includes a teaching assignment of courses scheduled over the academic year in combination with significant educational leadership opportunities, such as curriculum development and innovation. The academic appointment as Instructor will be to one of the four Departments with the best fit in the Faculty of Education. Although primary teaching and educational leadership responsibilities will be within the Master of Educational Technology (MET) program, it is expected that the candidate will also teach one course within their home department. Applicants will have an earned doctoral degree with expertise in New Media and Learning Technologies (or related fields) and experience with post-secondary online teaching and learning, ideally with experience in schools or other informal learning environments; and demonstrated experience with a wide range of educational technologies, applied instructional strategies, and instructional design of online learning. Preference will be given to applicants with the following qualifications: (a) interdisciplinary interests and experience in new media practices and pedagogy, with an emphasis on the crafts, theories, and technologies as utilized by and relevant to the design of formal and informal online, networked learning spaces; (b) evidence of potential to contribute to academic knowledge in New Media and Learning Technologies (c) evidence of expertise and experience required to contribute to competitively-adjudicated Educational Innovation grant-funded projects; (d) commitments to decolonizing, reconciliation, anti-racist, and social justice approaches to teaching and learning; (e) demonstrated leadership in educational, school, and/or academic contexts. This is a tenure-track position and the successful candidate will be reviewed for reappointment, tenure, and promotion in subsequent years in accordance with the Collective Agreement. It is expected that Instructors will keep abreast of current developments in their areas of specialty and in the field of teaching and learning. The Master of Educational Technology (MET) program offers a fully online graduate degree that explores the potential use and impact of digital media and learning technologies in a variety of contexts. UBC is an internationally-recognized leader in digital and distributed education, and the Faculty members work on the leading edge of curriculum design and technology integration. In addition to the Master’s Degree, the MET program also offers two specialized graduate certificates. Under general supervision of the Director of the Master of Educational Technology (MET) program, the incumbent will carry out educational leadership work to assure that the MET courses and online program and certificates are designed with focus on student achievement using the most innovative and appropriate educational technologies, applied instructional strategies, and instructional design attuned to the educational level and purpose of the specific course/program. The incumbent is responsible for the development of degree, graduate credit certificate programs, and specialized advanced professional development programs that will be offered by the MET Program and the Faculty of Education.
