Smartphones and their applications have created new capital for information and communication technology corporations and changed the way people communicate. Smartland Korea, as the first attempt to comprehensively analyze mobile communication in the context of Korean smartphones, looks into a largely neglected focus of inquiry, a localized mobile landscape, with particular reference to young Koreans’ engagement with their devices and applications. It focuses not only on the celebratory achievement of technological advancement, but also the significance of social milieu in the development of the smartphones. It situates the emergence of smartphones within the growth of mobile technologies and overall telecommunications industries embedded in Korea’s information and communication technologies. The book examines the technology’s innovation and the evolution, the digital economy through the lens of political economy, and the youth culture embedded in the Korean smartphone context. four visualizations (and open data) from data mining online news at massive scale

Apologies for cross-posting - I thought many of you would find of interest four of my latest pieces on what we can learn about the global structure of the news media landscape through massive mining of online news, and given that the underlying datasets are all open, that these might offer great starting points for many other research questions. In particular, two of the analyses rely on applying deep learning image cataloging to more than a quarter billion global news photographs from last year, one examining visual geocoding and the other looking at semantic visual clustering using the assigned labels. One explores what it looks like to combine multilingual textual geocoding and sentiment analysis (both covering 65 languages) to process a quarter billion news articles and 2.2 billion location mentions to map "global happiness" as seen through the eyes of the world's online news media. The final leverages visual document extraction to compile three quarters of a billion outlinks from 121 million articles over the last 10 months and uses that link graph to explore how global media outlets link to each other. What makes this particular analysis distinct is both the global scope (crossing all countries and 65 languages) and the use of the article link graph rather than the page link graph as is traditionally done (ie looking at only the links in the article text itself, rather than the myriad links found in the rest of the surrounding page, such as headers/footers/advertisements/etc). DESCRIPTION: The Hans Bredow Institute for Media Research is a publicly funded research institute that focuses on the study of mediated public communication. Its research encompasses both broadcast and digital communication from an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective. The postdoctoral research network Algorithmed Public Spheres was established to study the relevance of algorithms for the constitution of the public sphere. We emphasize in particular the importance of algorithms for filtering, ranking and selecting media content and for structuring digital communication. In contrast to the use of data mining in areas such as healthcare, credit scoring and general business analytics, where such techniques have a long tradition, the impact of algorithms on the public sphere poses novel challenges. How are communication, media, and public discourse impacted by transferring the dominant logics of consumption from other industries to news, information, and political deliberation, implemented in social media platforms, search engines, and on news websites? Research in this area could include: - Measurement of algorithmic bias and discrimination - Feedback effects in recommender systems - Assessment of potential filter bubbles - Algorithms in news production, distribution and consumption processes - User interaction with and rationalization of algorithms We invite applications for international postdoctoral research fellows from fields including, but not restricted to, computer and information science, communication and media studies, law, sociology and philosophy, who will conduct innovative research on the social and cultural impact of algorithms during stays of 3-12 months in Hamburg in the academic year 2017/2018. The Summer School is sponsored by the European Consortium for Political Research and supported by its Standing Group on Political Mobilization and Participation. The Summer School will explore the complex relationship between media and diverse instances of political participation and mobilization. More in particular, the lectures during the Summer School will revolve around three main themes on which literature flourished in the past few years, providing new perspectives on the relationship between media and political participation/mobilizations: (1) media cultures; (2) media materialities; and (3) media practices. Out now Massimo Ragnedda, *The third level of Digital Divide. A Weberian Approach to Digital Inequalities*, Routledge, 2017 Drawing on the thought of Max Weber, in particular his theory of stratification, this book engages with the question of whether the digital divide simply extends traditional forms of inequality, or whether it also includes new forms of social exclusion, or perhaps manifests counter-trends that alleviate traditional inequalities whilst constituting new modalities of inequality. With attention to the manner in which social stratification in the digital age is reproduced and transformed online, the author develops an account of stratification as it exists in the digital sphere, advancing the position that, just as in the social sphere, inequalities in the online world go beyond the economic elements of inequality. As such, study of the digital divide should focus not simply on class dynamics or economic matters, but cultural aspects - such as status or prestige - and political aspects - such as group affiliations. Demonstrating the enduring relevance of Weber’s distinctions with regard to social inequality, The Third Digital Divide: A Weberian approach to rethinking digital inequalities explores the ways in which online activities and digital skills vary according to crucial sociological dimensions, explaining these in concrete terms in relation to the dynamics of social class, social status and power. CALL FOR PAPERS (apologies for multiple copies) *3rd IEEE International Workshop on Internet of Things for Active and Assisted Living (IoTAAL)* In conjunction with IEEE Global IoT Summit 2017, Geneva, Switzerland - 6-9 June 2017. http://www.tlc.dii.univpm.it/iotaalms/iotaal2017/ *MOTIVATION AND SCOPE* Increased life expectancy and decreased birth rates are challenging developed countries worldwide, with a rapidly growing elderly population, and a declining workforce. These two contextual phenomena are generating new needs, as ageing increases the probability of developing physical and cognitive impairments, requiring new and more effective ways to provide support and care. According to the United Nations, the elderly, defined as people over the age of 60, will make up 37% of the European population by 2050, from 20% in 2000: this will put a dramatic pressure on public welfare systems, and new ways of assistance and care delivery have to be designed. The Internet of Things may provide significant enhancement to the quality of life for the elderly and, in general, people in need, bringing new algorithms, architectures and platforms into Active and Assisted Living (AAL), to develop new and innovative approaches. A peculiar aspect of IoT relies in enabling the collection of massive amounts of data, generated from physical and virtual sensors, things, smart objects and users. As such, IoT is totally functional to AAL, with the pervasive collection of environmental and personal data related to the monitored subject, and their processing, aimed at generating information to be used in different types of applications, from behavioral analysis, to gesture and action recognition, to fall prevention and detection, to human-machine interaction, just to mention a few. *TOPICS OF INTEREST* This workshop aims at investigating the close relationship between IoT and AAL, in a data-oriented perspective, and at different layers: from the technologies enabling sensor data collection, to the communication architectures needed to support data transfer, to the reasoning techniques applied to data, in order to generate the information upon which AAL services and functionalities are built.
