CfP - "Digital Religiosities: (Re)Configuring Religion(s) on Web 2.0" - AAA Annual Conference
by Hasan Azad 24 Mar '17

24 Mar '17

Dear all, Please forward to anyone who might be interested. Best, Hasan *Call for Papers* American Anthropological Association Annual Conference, Washington DC, Nov 29-Dec 3, 2017 *Digital Religiosities:* *(Re)Configuring Religion(s) on Web 2.0* In her 2011 lecture “Theorizing the Web,” sociologist Saskia Sassen[1] <#_ftn1> points out how knowledge within the digital realm is reconstituted and reassembled as another kind of knowledge: “[T]he body of knowledge gets distributed and spliced-up in different ways so that you lose the packaging, and in losing that packaging all sorts of possibilities open up.” This panel explores the way(s) in which “traditional” modes of religious authority (where authority and power are co-constitutive of the power/knowledge dyad) are reconfigured, dissected, and re-appropriated such that religious actors – online preachers, activists, scholars, discussants, trollers – redefine religion(s) and religiosity in surprising ways. Possible paper topics include (but are not limited to): - Digital Islamic authority – how the digital sphere re-configures traditional modes of Islamic knowledge and transmission - Digital bodies of Christ – how the digital sphere re-imagines the church - Digital fundamentalism(s) – Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Christian, Islamic - Religious knowledge(s) in the digital age - Online preachers and YouTube faith(ers) - Facebook Fanatics – how social media creates siloes of religious (in)tolerance Please send a 250-word abstract and bio to ha2248(a)columbia.edu by April 3 for consideration. ------------------------------ [1] <#_ftnref1> http://vimeo.com/23044503 -- Hasan Azad, PhD Dept. of Religion Columbia University NY, 10027 Red and Green Oil on Water - A Novel: https://www.amazon.com/Red-Green-Water-Hasan-Azad-ebook/dp/B01IZMTHEY/ref=s… website: http://www.hasanazad.com/main/ Academia.edu: https://columbia.academia.edu/HasanAzad Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/has-an-apple co-founder: Yoga Makes Art: https://yogaandwriting.wordpress.com/2016/02/

Final CfP: ACM RecSys 2017 (Abstract Deadline: March 27th, 2017)
by Christoph Trattner 23 Mar '17

23 Mar '17

** Please forward to anyone who might be interested ** -------------------------------------------------------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS ACM Conference on Recommender Systems (RecSys 2017) to be held in Como, Italy, 27th-31th August 2017 https://recsys.acm.org/recsys17/ -------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear all, We are pleased to invite you to contribute to the Eleventh ACM Conference on Recommender Systems (RecSys 2017), the premier venue for research and applications of recommendation technologies. The upcoming RecSys conference will be held in Como, Italy, from August, 27th to August 31st, 2017. The conference will continue RecSys’ practice of connecting the research and practitioner communities to exchange ideas, frame problems, and share solutions. All the accepted papers will be published by ACM. We construe recommender systems broadly, including applications ranging from e-commerce to social networking, platforms from web to mobile and beyond, and a wide variety of technologies ranging from collaborative filtering to knowledge-based reasoning. Topics of interest for RecSys 2017 include (but are not limited to): - Algorithm scalability - Case studies of real-world implementations - Conversational recommender systems - Context-aware recommenders - Evaluation metrics and studies - Explanations and evidence - Field and user studies - Group recommenders - Innovative/New applications - Machine learning for recommendation - Mobile and multi-channel recommendations - Novel paradigms - Personalisation - Preference elicitation - Privacy and Security - Recommendation algorithms - Social recommenders - Semantic technologies for recommendation - Trust and reputation - Theoretical foundations - User interaction and interfaces - User modelling The authors will be asked to indicate whether their paper is primarily Algorithm or Application focussed. Algorithm papers should discuss novel algorithmic approaches to recommendation challenges, with appropriate evaluations and comparisons to baseline works. Application papers should discuss new domains or large-scale applications of recommenders or focus on user experience, interface, or impact. This will allow the PC Chairs to better assign reviewers and to balance the program. PAPER SUBMISSION CATEGORIES LONG PAPERS should report on substantial contributions of lasting value. The maximum length is 8 pages (plus up to 1 page references). Each accepted long paper will be included in the conference proceedings and presented in a plenary session as part of the main conference program. We expect the review process to be highly selective: the acceptance rates for full papers in the past three years were 20-24%. SHORT PAPERS typically discuss exciting new work that is not yet mature enough for a long paper. The maximum length is 4 pages (plus up to 1 page references). Each accepted short paper will be included in the conference proceedings and presented in a plenary session as part of the main conference. The presentation may include a system demonstration. Note that rejected long paper submissions will not be considered as short papers. SIGCHI SUBMITTER AGREEMENT RecSys 2017 is a SIGCHI conference and making a submission to a SIGCHI conference is a serious matter. Submissions require time and effort by SIGCHI volunteers to organise and manage the reviewing process, and, if the submission is accepted, the publication and presentation process. Thus, anyone who submits to RecSys 2017 implicitly confirms the following statements: - I confirm that this submission is the work of myself and my co-authors. - I confirm that I or my co-authors hold copyright to the content, and have obtained appropriate permissions for any portions of the content that are copyrighted by others. - I confirm that any research reported in this submission involving human subjects has gone through the appropriate approval process at my institution. - I confirm that if this paper is accepted, I or one of my co-authors will attend the conference. Papers that are not presented at the conference by an author may be removed from the proceedings at the discretion of the program chairs. PAPER FORMAT AND SUBMISSION All submissions and reviews will be handled electronically. RecSys 2017 submissions should be prepared according to the standard double-column ACM SIG proceedings format. Additional information about formatting and style files is available online, see: http://www.acm.org/public ations/proceedings-template Papers must be submitted to EasyChair by 23:59, AoE (Anywhere on Earth) on April 3rd, 2017, see: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=recsys2017 There will be no extensions to the submission deadline. The peer review process is double-blind (i.e. anonymised). This means that all submissions must not include information identifying the authors or their organisation. Specifically, do not include the authors’ names and affiliations, anonymise citations to your previous work and avoid providing any other information that would allow to identify the authors, such as acknowledgments and funding. Please take note that the official publication date is the date the proceedings are made available in the ACM Digital Library. This date may be up to two weeks prior to the first day of the conference. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work. IMPORTANT DATES Abstract submission deadline: March 27th, 2017 Paper submission deadline: April 3rd, 2017 Author notification: June 12th, 2017 Camera-ready version deadline: July 7th, 2017 Deadlines refer to 23:59 (11:59pm) in the AoE (Anywhere on Earth) time zone. Apologies for cross-posting! --- Call for Papers: Adoption and Acceptance of eHealth: Beyond the current state-of-the-art A workshop, held in conjunction with INTERACT 2017 in Mumbai, India www.interactehealth.com Workshop topic: The main approach taken in adoption and acceptance studies of interactive health technologies mainly follows a quantitative approach, often based on theoretical approaches such as the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) or the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). Such studies mostly focus on a few, abstract factors, such as ease of use or perceived usefulness presuming a linear process of acceptance, but fail to give an in-depth overview of what exactly speeds up adoption and acceptance within a real-life context, also on the long term. In all, studies that show how different types of users with different needs and expectations make use of these technologies in specific healthcare contexts are crucial to inform the design of new interactive health technologies and their implementation strategies. The objective of this workshop is to discuss where we are today on the adoption and acceptance of interactive health technologies and from this position, define a roadmap to push this field forward. Call for papers: The aim of this one-day workshop is to bring together researchers from both industry and academia to discuss best practices as well as pitfalls of adoption and acceptance of interactive technologies in healthcare and to provide the Interact community with guidelines to inform future developments and implementation of their interactive health systems. We welcome multi-disciplinary contributions from the many disciplines and approaches that intersect with interactive health technologies (e.g. engineering, computer sciences, (interactive) design, sociology, anthropology, psychology, neurosciences, cognitive sciences, communication science, cultural studies, nursing, fine and media arts, and law, etc.). You are welcome to submit a paper on one of the following topics: * Adoption and acceptance studies of interactive health technologies that expand upon TAM and UTAUT * Studies of adoption and acceptance of interactive health technologies that are based on different models than TAM or UTAUT (e.g., the Task-Technology Fit Model) * Qualitative studies of adoption and acceptance of interactive health technologies * Longitudinal studies of adoption and acceptance of interactive health technologies * Studies that focus on a specific factor that affects adoption or acceptance of interactive health technologies (e.g., trust, privacy, control, aesthetics) * Position papers on the topic of adoption and acceptance of interactive health technologies Paper format: We welcome prospective participants to submit extended abstracts (max. 4 pages) covering any relevant topic (related to the problem statement on the homepage) addressing the adoption and acceptance of interactive health technologies. In addition to papers presenting empirical research, we also welcome papers about new theoretical perspectives, new methodological challenges, and design challenges related to interactive health technologies. The manuscripts should use the conference format. Please submit a PDF copy of your manuscript to s.benallouch(a)saxion.nl and l.vanvelsen(a)rrd.nl Workshop organizers: Somaya Ben Allouch, Saxion University of Applied Sciences Lex van Velsen, Roessingh Research and Development Timeline April 26, 2017: Submission deadline for workshop papers June 7, 2017: Notification of acceptance June 21, 2017: Camera-ready workshop papers due for extended abstracts of INTERACT 2017 September 25 or 26, 2017: INTERACT workshops __________________________________________________________________ Please consider the environment and do not print this email unless absolutely necessary. Please forward widely! *HASTAC 2017: The Possible Worlds of Digital Humanities**, November 2-4, 2017* University of Central Florida, Orlando, Florida Submissions Deadline: *April 7, 2017* CFP link: http://hastac2017.org/index.php/cfp/ In 2017, we invite you to join us at the University of Central Florida to explore “The Possible Worlds of Digital Humanities.” Orlando is known to tourists worldwide for theme parks that bring to life many imagined worlds and narratives, most of which reflect back to us dominant discourses and ideologies. Likewise, digital humanities struggles with building towards a future that is more inclusive and interdisciplinary. This year, we hope to address the unsolved hard problems and explore the new opportunities of the digital humanities. We particularly welcome submissions addressing themes such as: - challenges of monolingualism within the digital humanities - indigenous culture, decolonial and post-colonial theory and technology - technology and education–open learning, peer learning, and issues of access, equity for primary and/or higher education - communication of knowledge, publishing, and intellectual property - digital cultural heritage and hegemony - interdisciplinary goals and conversations in digital humanities - digital humanities and gender, race, and other identities - simulation, modeling, and visualization - games and gaming, including for learning - community development including the importance of art and culture districts - other unsolved hard problems in digital humanities HASTAC 2017 will include plenary panels, workshops, roundtables, short “soapbox” talks, project demos, poster sessions, and a curated media arts show exhibition. At HASTAC, we invite you to think about the format of your session as well as the content. We seek proposals for participant presentations in the following categories: - 5-8 minute “soapbox” talks - roundtables (be creative with your format — no reading papers!) - project demos - digital and/or print posters - maker sessions or workshops - Media arts (new media, games, and electronic literature) For each submission, we will need the following information from you: 1) complete contact information including valid phone, email, and institutional affiliation, if any; 2) maximum 500-word abstract of the work you would like to present that must discuss its relationship to the conference themes; 3) any technical requirements or other support (including space requirements) that may be required for the presentation. For exhibitions or other performances, please indicate any equipment that is absolutely required and that you cannot bring with you. In the event that we cannot guarantee access to the equipment, we regret that we may not be able to accept your proposal. *Digital and/or Print Posters Wanted!* Print posters (4 x 3’) and electronic posters (to be projected) are solicited for emerging projects, ideas, and scholars. In presenting your research with a poster, you should aim to use the poster as a means for generating active discussion of your research. Limit the text to about one-fourth of the poster space, and use visuals (graphs, photographs, schematics, maps, etc.) to tell your story. Use the regular submission form, but indicate that you are proposing a Poster by checking the appropriate box. *Maker Sessions & Workshops* We will provide some room and resources for individuals or groups to create informal maker spaces, where conference participants can share, exchange, and experiment with new online tools, personal fabrication technologies, open source electronics such as Arduino, and other creative and learning devices and gadgets. To propose a maker session or workshop, please use the standard submission form and indicate that yours is a maker session. Please also tell us how long the session requires! *Media Arts Show* The Media Arts Show invites creative works that engage with the show’s theme, “Soft(ware) Solutions / Hard Problems.” Works of new media, including games, electronic literature, and installations that meld physical and digital components, are welcome. Please provide a detailed description of the work, its purpose, and all technical and physical requirements for display. All proposals will be peer-reviewed, but we regret that we cannot provide detailed reviewer feedback. We welcome applications from scholars at all stages of their careers from all disciplines and fields, from private sector companies and public sector organizations, from artists and public intellectuals, and from networks and individuals. Best, Mel Stanfill, PhD Assistant Professor Texts and Technology and Digital Media University of Central Florida http://www.melstanfill.com
