CFP: Complexity of power in the smart city
by Seija Ridell 04 Apr '17

04 Apr '17

*CFP: ’Complexity of power in the smart city’ - A Special Issue for /The International Communication Gazette/* The ever more pervasive digitalization of physical infrastructures with the rapid proliferation of the ‘internet of everything’ has amplified the nature of cities as media, i.e. as technologically mediated communicative systems. A prime example of ICT-infused urban developments is the so-called Smart City – a successfully marketed and globally prominent model for the city of the future. In the smart city scenarios, cities function like computers, optimized to manage any problems of urban life with automated and sustainable efficiency. In terms of communication, what these visions epitomize is an urge to create a frictionless cybernetic organism – a desire that calls for a (self-)reflexive reassessment of cybernetics and systems theory in the field of contemporary communication and media studies. There is plenty of critical research on the smart city as trademarked and promoted by technology companies, such as Cisco, HP, IBM and Microsoft, in collaboration with the public sector and other corporate actors. In this special issue, we refer with the notion ‘smart’ more broadly to the ubiquitous role that software and algorithms have come to play, together and as entangled with material structures, in the sociotechnical constitution of urban environments, and spurred by the profit seeking economic logic that drives technology development worldwide. Proceeding from the observation that ‘smartness’ not only renders cities spatially multiple but also involves human actors in the production of space in historically novel ways, we focus on how power is reconfigured as part of this process. The starting point of addressing the complexification of spatial power in the special issue is dual. On the one hand, smart urban management creates unpredictable, often uncontrollable and conflictual, tendencies that present new challenges to the established policies and practices of city planning. On the other hand, the deepening digital mediation profoundly affects how ordinary city dwellers contribute to urban power dynamics. As regards the latter, one pertinent question concerns the incorporation of smart devices with their multiple computational and networked affordances into urbanites’ taken for granted bodily behaviour and their daily movements and (inter)actions. ** *Focus of the special issue* Against the above background, we are looking for 2–3 complementary articles to a special issue (to be published by /the International Communication Gazette/) on the complexity of power in the digitally mediated contemporary cities. We invite contributions from researchers in different disciplines, interested in the power implications of the entangled technological, economic and political urban developments. In addition to communication and media studies, submissions from the fields of STS, sociology, geography, urban studies, architecture and game studies, among others, are most welcome. The articles should address in one way or another the following aspects of spatial power in the contemporary urban context (or any other dimension, including historical, that may relate to our rationale): -complexity of cities as a challenge to urban planning and design as well as to urban planning theory -potential of fictional methods and playful design in transforming strategically motivated and top down planning practices -the role of urbanites’ mediated bodily activities in the spatial production -interests and values underlying the smart city scenarios -reconfiguration of urban spatial power as a challenge to communication research and media theory The special issue will explore these and related questions by bringing together contributions from both experienced scholars and researchers who are at an early stage of their career. We welcome both theoretical, methodological and empirical submissions. The publication of the special issue is scheduled for August 2019. *Timeline* May 8^th : deadline for submission of abstracts (300–500 words) to the guest editors June 1st: notification of abstract acceptance If selected: July 15^th : deadline for submitting an extended abstract/article outline (about 1200 words) to the guest editors August 31^st : guest editors’ comments on extended abstracts; manuscript instructions and a more detailed production timeline *Abstract submission * Include in the abstract a list of key references and a short bio. Please submit your abstract by e-mail to the guest editors: 1) Seija Ridell, University of Tampere: seija.ridell(a)uta.fi 2) Marco Santangelo, Politecnico di Torino: marco.santangelo(a)polito.it For any enquiry please contact the guest editors.

Mediated Conversation minitrack: HICSS CFP
by Yoram Kalman 03 Apr '17

03 Apr '17

Dear all, I believe many at AoIR would be interested in the HICSS minitrack on mediated conversation. HICSS, Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences is now in its 51st year. This year it meets in the Big Island of Hawaii. For more information about this unique conference and its international reputation see http://hicss.hawaii.edu/about/ Details of the CFP are below. Mediated Conversation Conversations are at the heart of every human activity. Mediated conversations that use text, audio, images and video are a part of every aspect of life: From the Cluetrain Manifesto’s “markets are conversations”, through Robin Dunbar’s conversations as devices for social grooming. Accordingly, this minitrack is open to research on mediated conversation from a variety of disciplinary perspectives including Communication, Management, Education, Computer Science, Sociology, Political Science, Psychology, Linguistics, Law, and the like. The mediated conversation minitrack is home for research of the interface of conversation and technology at HICSS. As the role of mediated conversation in everyday life and in the workplace becomes more dominant, we encounter new research questions. Many mediated conversations leave a persistent record and become persistent conversations. This persistence transforms the essence of conversation that was, until recently, predominantly volatile and ephemeral. On the other hand, some forms of mediated conversation are deliberately ephemeral and impermanent, as demonstrated by media such as Snapchat. This is the successor of the Persistent Conversation minitrack established by Tom Erickson and Susan Herring at HICSS in 1999, which was originally focused on the novelty of conversational persistence. Since then, the mediation of human communication has been imposing a new set of challenges. For example, what are the mechanisms that perform the role of the ephemeral social cues of face-to-face conversation? What are the consequences of the creation of potentially permanent records in terms of privacy, accountability, and the right to be forgotten? What of the ability to erase, steal, hijack and selectively leak and disseminate conversations that were meant to remain under the control of their participants? How do platforms affect or mediate conversations, for example by imposing algorithmic biases? Can we evaluate the claims about loss of intimacy, depth, and quality of human communication when carried out digitally? This minitrack brings together researchers and innovators to explore mediated conversation and its implications for learning, commercial transactions, entertainment, news, politics, and other forms of human interaction; to raise new socio-technical, ethical, pedagogical, linguistic and social questions; and to suggest new methods, perspectives, and design approaches. Examples of appropriate topics include, but are not limited to: · Innovation in digital conversational practice: turn-taking, threading, and other structural features of CMC · The dynamics and analysis of large scale conversation systems (e.g., MOOCs and big data applications) · Methods for analyzing mediated conversation · Studies of virtual communities or other sites of digital conversation · The role of mediated conversation in knowledge management · The role of mediated conversation in organizations · Domain specific applications, opportunities and challenges of mediated conversations and conversational exchanges (e.g., in education, healthcare, social movements, government, citizen participation) · Conversation visualization, and visual cues · The role of listeners, lurkers, and silent interactions · Novel properties of mediated conversation · Social presence and the mediation of an attributed user’s identity · The platform's role in mediating the conversation Submit at https://confs.precisionconference.com/~hicss/ *Submission deadline: June 15, 2017, 11:59 pm HST* For questions, please contact one of the co-chairs *Minitrack Co-Chairs:* *Sheizaf Rafaeli* (Primary Contact) University of Haifa sheizaf(a)rafaeli.net *Yoram M Kalman* The Open University of Israel yoramka(a)openu.ac.il *Carmel Kent* University of Exeter, UK kent.carmel(a)gmail.com -- Yoram Kalman, PhD Cell: +972 54 574 7375 www.kalmans.com

Dear all Just a thought, but diary apps might show a seasonal surge ? Possibly without the second smaller spike which shows up in sales for academic year paper diaries? Yes it's always summer somewhere! But also a new year synchronised to January 1 on the Gregorian calendar? Thanks for all the interesting thinking and generous exchanges on this list Clare On 30 Mar 2017 3:19 am, MC Cambre <mcambre(a)ualberta.ca> wrote: Touché for neuroplasticity! Postdoc Opportunity in Data Ethics - UC Berkeley
by Anna Lauren Hoffmann 29 Mar '17

29 Mar '17

Do you know of anyone working on data/info/tech ethics that's also looking for a postdoc opportunity? The School of Information at UC Berkeley is definitely looking to bring in someone who can contribute in this area. These postdocs come with a small-ish teaching commitment (25%-33% of your time, the rest is yours for research/relevant work). Plus, if you're in the ethics/policy area, you get to work with a really rad bunch of folks! And you also get access to the rest of UC Berkeley. I've occupied one of these postdocs for the last two years and I can't say enough good things about the opportunities this position has afforded. As I'm leaving, I would love to see those same opportunities passed on to an exciting and deserving early-career scholar! For explicit application info: https://www.ischool.berkeley.edu/about/ischooljobs/datascipostdoc. Also, I'm happy to answer any questions if folks have them - just direct them to annalauren(a)berkeley.edu. -Anna --- Anna Lauren Hoffmann Postdoctoral Scholar & Instructor School of Information University of California, Berkeley

Re: [Air-L] Question: Do 'apps' have 'seasons'?
by Jill Walker Rettberg 29 Mar '17

29 Mar '17

I would imagine the global nature of the internet makes seasons less important for apps - and even for memes, Snapchat filters, the types of stories you see on BuzzFeed or Reddit. Seasons and rituals are so different around the globe. You do certainly see seasons in Snapchat filters, Facebook prompts etc, and usually US-centric seasons often with little cultural awareness of the seasons not being global. Thanksgiving, Black Friday, American Mothers/Fathers day, College graduation weekend, spring break, Memorial Day are all examples of holidays not celebrated globally or even in Europe, which in many ways is culturally close to the US (and in the northern hemisphere so seasonally aligned). The silliest example of failed seasonal globalist I've seen was Snapchat sending out a Happy Fathers Day message to Norwegian users - on Norwegian MOTHERS day. Ha. You're probably thinking more of which apps are marketed, though? Is there a way to download data from the App Stores over time to test this? You may be able to generate graphs from https://www.appannie.com/ as well. Jill Sent from my phone On 28 Mar 2017, at 20:45, Ravindra Mohabeer <mohabeerlists(a)gmail.com<mailto:mohabeerlists@gmail.com>> wrote: Hello All, I find myself with a rather crudely formed idea through which I am questioning whether day-to-day ‘apps’ (or ‘Internet experiences’) taken in a broad interpretation exist in a temporal sense that can be described as ‘having seasons’? If retailers have seasons (artificial or ‘real’) that reflect/create behavioural patterns - e.g. people tend to renovate in the Spring, buy certain things around certain holidays, etc. - do ‘apps' follow similar seasonal patterns? Or, coming from a media studies perspective I have noted an (admittedly anecdotal but) immense shift in how media seasons are defined, I wonder if any potential a-seaonality of the 'app world’ has upset temporal expectations of the seasonality of mediated experiences. I mean seasons in both a climatic (i.e. spring, summer, fall, winter) and social sense (blockbuster, holiday, shopping, election, ‘back to school,’ new release, etc.) - and as an interplay of the climatic and social dimensions concurrently within the separate backdrop of ‘innovation cycles,’ release dates, and updates. Obviously there are time-limited ‘apps' (like contest apps or event-based apps), but I wonder whether there are ebbs and flows of general ‘app' use, particularly platform apps of the social media ilk, or of the organization/productivity type for example, that can be temporally described as seasonal? I realize that my terms of reference are rather imperfectly formed (app, season, etc.) but I did that on purpose since I am rather more interested in your interpretation/application to whatever related construct as it explores the changing nature of the concept of seasonality/temporality and [new] mediated experiences. Just curious. Any thoughts? Ravi --------------------------------------- Ravindra N. Mohabeer, PhD Vancouver Island University Nanaimo, BC CANADA

Tools for archiving and analysing Reddit posts
by Tim Squirrell 29 Mar '17

29 Mar '17

Hi all, I'm currently about to embark on an ethnography of a Reddit community as part of my doctoral research into the construction and negotiation of authority and expertise in online fitness and nutrition communities. I was wondering whether anyone might have any experience of documenting and analysing Reddit threads and subreddits. I've tried using Zotero, but it makes analysis quite slow and clunky; with NVivo I've had limited success using nodes and trying to capture both posts and comment sections with the NCapture tool. One of the problems I'm encountering is that content is often linked and spread across multiple different sites of different kinds, and documentation methods that work in one place are less useful in another. I essentially want to be able to take a snapshot such that I can preserve the data as it was when I encountered it, as well as being able to perform a discourse analysis on the contents of a given thread. It might just be that I'm inexperienced in using NVivo and that there are ways of dealing with the issues I'm having, in which case any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Tim Squirrell PhD Candidate & Postgraduate Tutor Department of Science, Technology and Innovation Studies University of Edinburgh
