diverse US pubTV programs under attack--support response?
by Patricia Aufderheide 06 Apr '17

06 Apr '17

I hope that US members of AIR would consider lending an academic's voice to the support for creative, diverse documentaries, which Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) just used as a reason to defund public broadcasting. All the info is in this release <http://www.indiecaucus.org/blog/2017/4/6/indiecaucusresponsetocongress> from the International Documentary Association and Indiecaucus. I'm on the board of the Independent Television Service and have seen all these films, which are sterling examples of experiential documentaries about complex and underreported issues. I also, like some of you, have spent way too much time learning endless acronyms in an attempt to understand how public media function in the media flows that inform, or don't, our civil societies. The studies Caty Borum Chattoo and I recently did on diversity in US documentary programming are referred to in the release. While this is to one side of strictly academic issues, I hope that it will be seen as an acceptable post, given the connection between public media practice and research. Thank you. -- Patricia Aufderheide, Fulbright Senior Fellow 2017 Queensland University of Technology and University Professor and Founder Center for Media & Social Impact, School of Communication American University 4400 Massachusetts Av., NW American University, Washington, DC 20016-8017 McKinley Hall 323 @paufder @cmsimpact cmsimpact.org paufder(a)american.edu 202-643-5356 Sample *Reclaiming Fair Use! * <http://cmsimpact.org/reclaiming> Order Reclaiming Fair Use: How to Put Balance Back in Copyright, University of Chicago Press, 2011. <http://www.amazon.com/Reclaiming-Fair-Use-Balance-Copyright/dp/0226032280/r…>

Please forward widely! *HASTAC 2017: The Possible Worlds of Digital Humanities**, November 2-4, 2017* University of Central Florida, Orlando, Florida Submissions Deadline: *NOW Monday April 17, 2017* CFP link: http://hastac2017.org/index.php/cfp/ In 2017, we invite you to join us at the University of Central Florida to explore “The Possible Worlds of Digital Humanities.” Orlando is known to tourists worldwide for theme parks that bring to life many imagined worlds and narratives, most of which reflect back to us dominant discourses and ideologies. Likewise, digital humanities struggles with building towards a future that is more inclusive and interdisciplinary. This year, we hope to address the unsolved hard problems and explore the new opportunities of the digital humanities. We particularly welcome submissions addressing themes such as: - challenges of monolingualism within the digital humanities - indigenous culture, decolonial and post-colonial theory and technology - technology and education–open learning, peer learning, and issues of access, equity for primary and/or higher education - communication of knowledge, publishing, and intellectual property - digital cultural heritage and hegemony - interdisciplinary goals and conversations in digital humanities - digital humanities and gender, race, and other identities - simulation, modeling, and visualization - games and gaming, including for learning - community development including the importance of art and culture districts - other unsolved hard problems in digital humanities HASTAC 2017 will include plenary panels, workshops, roundtables, short “soapbox” talks, project demos, poster sessions, and a curated media arts show exhibition. At HASTAC, we invite you to think about the format of your session as well as the content. We seek proposals for participant presentations in the following categories: - 5-8 minute “soapbox” talks - roundtables (be creative with your format — no reading papers!) - project demos - digital and/or print posters - maker sessions or workshops - Media arts (new media, games, and electronic literature) For each submission, we will need the following information from you: 1) complete contact information including valid phone, email, and institutional affiliation, if any; 2) maximum 500-word abstract of the work you would like to present that must discuss its relationship to the conference themes; 3) any technical requirements or other support (including space requirements) that may be required for the presentation. For exhibitions or other performances, please indicate any equipment that is absolutely required and that you cannot bring with you. In the event that we cannot guarantee access to the equipment, we regret that we may not be able to accept your proposal. *Digital and/or Print Posters Wanted!* Print posters (4 x 3’) and electronic posters (to be projected) are solicited for emerging projects, ideas, and scholars. In presenting your research with a poster, you should aim to use the poster as a means for generating active discussion of your research. Limit the text to about one-fourth of the poster space, and use visuals (graphs, photographs, schematics, maps, etc.) to tell your story. Use the regular submission form, but indicate that you are proposing a Poster by checking the appropriate box. *Maker Sessions & Workshops* We will provide some room and resources for individuals or groups to create informal maker spaces, where conference participants can share, exchange, and experiment with new online tools, personal fabrication technologies, open source electronics such as Arduino, and other creative and learning devices and gadgets. To propose a maker session or workshop, please use the standard submission form and indicate that yours is a maker session. Please also tell us how long the session requires! *Media Arts Show* The Media Arts Show invites creative works that engage with the show’s theme, “Soft(ware) Solutions / Hard Problems.” Works of new media, including games, electronic literature, and installations that meld physical and digital components, are welcome. Please provide a detailed description of the work, its purpose, and all technical and physical requirements for display. All proposals will be peer-reviewed, but we regret that we cannot provide detailed reviewer feedback. open rank positions at NeRDS (New Research on Digital Society) group
by Dariusz Jemielniak 06 Apr '17

06 Apr '17

hi, I am posting this job post here, hoping that it fits the list's general interest profile, and that you will help me spread the word, if you find it relevant.. Many apologies for cross-posting! best, dj =================================== NeRDS (New Research on Digital Societies) <http://nerds.kozminski.edu.pl/> group at Kozminski University <http://www.kozminski.edu.pl/en/> (Poland), a leading research-driven business school in the heart of Europe, is seeking to fill *one or more open rank positions*. The candidates should specify if they are applying for a position of: - – research and teaching assistant (*asystent*), - – assistant professor (*adiunkt*), - – associate professor (*profesor nadzwyczajny*), or - – full professor (*profesor zwyczajny*). The research areas of particular interest for the candidates include: - – open collaboration and peer production, - – sharing economy and platform capitalism, - – digital humanities, - – critical studies of online communities, - – sociology of the internet, - – Big Data analysis, - – network society, - – virtual ethnography. *About you:* A successful candidate should have a strong academic record matching the position they are applying for. In the case of an associate and full professor ranks, a strong publication record in the JCR-listed journals and the leading academic publishers, as well as a proven successful grant applications track record are expected. Full proficiency in written and oral English is necessary (level C2 and above). Fluency in Polish is not a requirement, but in the long run can be useful. If you do not speak Polish, we would certainly hope that you will be willing to learn it. Other things we value include: - – extended experience from abroad, - – combined educational background from different fields or documented research experience in both qualitative and quantitative projects, - – strong academic orientation, - – good presentation and teaching skills, - – documented academic interests related to studying online communities. We do not restrict the background of candidates to a particular field, as we believe that good research can be inspired and developed from different angles. However, we understand that the position may appeal particularly to people doing research in management, organization studies, sociology, anthropology, media studies, information science, or digital humanities. We are equally interested in people apt in qualitative and quantitative approaches, with a slight preference to those, who are able to do both. *About us:* NeRDS group is a highly informal, relatively young team of researchers. We follow participative decision-making principles and, if invited for an interview, you can expect being interviewed and evaluated by all members of the team, irrespective of the rank you are applying for. We put great emphasis on internationalization and high academic standards. Over the last five years, NeRDS group members have gone on one-year research stays to Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cornell University, University of California Berkeley, or New York University, among others. We regularly publish in JCR-listed journals, and publish books in the leading academic presses (e.g. Stanford University Press, Edward Elgar, Ashgate, Routledge). Some of us are social movements activists (and e.g. serve on the Board of Trustees of Wikimedia Foundation or are engaged in the city movements), some are involved in the start-up culture (mentoring, seed funds, developing own businesses, etc.), and we generally value bringing a diverse experience to the table. We believe that research should be stellar solid and of high quality, but that it also should be fun. We offer flexibility, a lot of independence, and a friendly working culture. Also, our teaching load can be very generous (read: low). NeRDS participates in the international Network of Centers <https://networkofcenters.net/> . CFP Reminder: Archives Unleashed 4.0 in London, England, June 2017
by Ian Milligan 05 Apr '17

05 Apr '17

Hi all – Just a reminder if you or anybody else might be interested in joining us! Many thanks, Ian Call for Participation: Archives Unleashed 4.0 Web Archive Datathon http://archivesunleashed.com The British Library June 11 – 13, 2017 Travel grants will be available for US-based graduate students. Applications for all attendees are due 7 March 2017 (midnight anywhere in the world). Call for Participation This event is the fourth workshop in the Archives Unleashed series. Each event is a standalone datathon aimed at building the Web Archiving community and providing a forum for interdisciplinary collaboration. The World Wide Web has a profound impact on how we research and understand the past. The sheer amount of cultural information that is generated and, crucially, preserved every day in electronic form, presents exciting new opportunities for researchers. Much of this information is captured within web archives. Web archives often contain hundreds of billions of web pages, ranging from individual homepages and social media posts, to institutional websites. These archives offer tremendous potential for social scientists and humanists, and the questions research may pose stretch across a multitude of fields. Scholars broaching topics dating back to the mid-1990s will find their projects enhanced by web data. Moreover, scholars hoping to study the evolution of cultural and societal phenomena will find a treasure trove of data in web archives. In short, web archives offer the ability to reconstruct large-scale traces of the relatively recent past. While there has been considerable discussion about web archive tools and datasets, few forums or mechanisms for coordinated, mutually informing development efforts have been created. Our series of datathons presents an opportunity to collaboratively unleash our web collections, exploring cutting-edge research tools while fostering a broad-based consensus on future directions in web archive analysis. This event will bring together a small group of 35 – 45 participants to collaboratively develop new open-source tools and approaches to web archives, and to kick-off collaboratively inspired research projects. Researchers should be comfortable with command line interactions, and knowledge of a scripting language (such as but not limited to Python) is strongly desired. By bringing together a group of like-minded scholars and programmers, we hope to begin building unified analytic production effort and to continue coalescing this nascent research community. At this event, we hope to continue to converge on a shared vision of future directions in the use of web archives for inquiry in the humanities and social sciences in order to build a community of practice around various web archive analytics platforms and tools. The event is sponsored by the British Library (lead sponsor), Rutgers University, University of Waterloo, the National Science Foundation and the International Internet Preservation Consortium. In addition, there will be a reception the first night and a dinner the second night, supported by funding from the NetLab at Aarhus University, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, and Rutgers University. We are also providing sample datasets for people to work on during the datathon, or they are happy to use their own. Included datasets are: • The .gov web archive covering the American government domain • The End of Term Web Archives (.gov/.mil), from 2008, 2012, and 2016 • Social media collections from the 2016 archive • Canadian Political Parties and Political Interest Groups collection and other datasets to be announced Those interested in participating should send a 250-word expression of interest and a CV to Ian Milligan (i2millig(a)uwaterloo.ca) by 7 April 2017 with “Archives Unleashed” in the subject line. This expression of interest should address the scholarly questions that you will be bringing to the datathon, and what datasets you might be interested in either working with or bringing to the event. Applicants will be notified by 15 April 2017. We expect to be able to issue a limited number of travel grants available for US-based doctoral students; preference will be given to those who have not participated in the Archives Unleashed program in the past, although we welcome returning participants. These grants can cover up to $1,000 USD in expenses. If you are in an eligible position, please indicate in your statement of interest that you would like to be considered for the travel grant. On behalf of the organizers, Matthew Weber (Rutgers University), Ian Milligan (University of Waterloo), Jimmy Lin (University of Waterloo), and Olga Holownia (British Library /IIPC). -- *Ian Milligan* Assistant Professor Department of History University of Waterloo 200 University Ave W. cfp: 'Digital Economies of Disability' special issue of ICS (abstracts due 31.07.17)
by Gerard Goggin 05 Apr '17

05 Apr '17

‘Digital Economies of Disability’ call for papers for special issue of Information, Communication & Society (ICS) edited by Haiqing Yu (UNSW), Gerard Goggin (Sydney), Karen Fisher (UNSW), and Bingqin Li (UNSW) This special issue aims to bring together original research papers from a diversified range of disciplines in disability studies, media and communication studies, social policy research, economic anthropology, and sociology to explore pragmatic and innovative ways to provide and enable equal economic, social and political opportunities for people with disabilities, from a comparative framework. It seeks to examine the opportunities for economic participation of people with disabilities enabled by digital and social media technologies and their political and social implications on respective communities and societies. It is known that digital economy is developing rapidly and unevenly worldwide. It heralds a transformative force in creating digital entrepreneurs and driving future economy. Digital entrepreneurship is seen as core to digital economy in that it can lead to economic growth, job creation, and social innovation. National governments, civil society organizations, and disability activists have considered digital technologies (represented by computers, the Internet, and smart phones) potentially useful in improving the life quality and life-chances for people with disabilities and in bringing about social inclusion for all people, particularly in health care, education, and employment. Efforts have been made to remove barriers of access to technologies, skill trainings and acquisition that are friendly to users with disability. Assistant programs are also implemented to ease the financial burden to access and acquire these technologies by people with disabilities. However, access to technologies (digital inclusion) does not equate with social inclusion. There is a long way to go before digital technologies can successfully impact on the lives of people with disabilities, as suggested by Goggin and Newell (2003). In the context of digital and networked world, we ask questions such as: * Can digital inclusion lead to social inclusion, particularly for people with disabilities? * What are the power structure, hierarchy, struggle, and appropriation implied in the rise of digital economy for and by disability? * What can be done by people (with or without disabilities), governments, the private sector, and civil society organisations to address the structural barriers to social and economic inclusion (not just digital inclusion) by utilizing digital and networking technologies? * Will digital economy and digital entrepreneurship present an opportunity to address social inequality and contradictions? The current economic slowdown/crisis calls for innovative and pragmatic approaches to solve social problems, approaches that can strike a balance between economic and social development. Social entrepreneurship that leverage digital technologies to create opportunities to address social issues, for example, may offer a new pathway of employment and enablement for people with disabilities and other traditionally disadvantaged groups of people. Digital social entrepreneurs with disabilities and for disabilities are part of a bigger structure and a key stakeholder in the digital social economy. Born of necessity, social economy has increasingly employed digital technologies and platforms to achieve efficiency, transparency, and optimum results in achieving social missions and social impact through economic activities. Will social economy for and of people with disabilities through digital means be an answer to tackle barriers for people with disability to be more actively members of society and enabling people to achieve collective social goals, and ultimately enhance social justice? This special issue welcomes critical case analyses of digital economy by and for disability and its implications for digital and social inclusion for people with disabilities from all walks of life. It is hoped that this special issue will generate scholarly interests from a wide range of geographical and disciplinary areas to explore innovative approaches to and opportunities for people with disabilities to achieve agency, social recognition, economic security, and political participation, through enterprising and digital means.
