ICA/CAT Preconference: Digital Media & Comm Research: A Venture in Forecasting and Intervention
by Leah Lievrouw 14 Mar '17

14 Mar '17

Hello all AoIR colleagues! For those of you planning to attend ICA in San Diego in May, you may be interested in this preconference on May 25, being organized by myself and /Information, Communication & Society/ editor Brian Loader (as you know, iCS publishes special issues for AoIR). See details below -- highlights include Delphi rounds ahead of the preconference for all registered participants, discussion sessions convened by contributors to the forthcoming /Routledge Handbook of Digital Media & Communication/ (Lievrouw & Loader, eds.), a closing session featuring as respondent Lee Rainie, Director of Internet, Science & Technology Research at the Pew Research Center, and a report on our results in a special section of /iCS/. We hope to see you there! Leah Lievrouw ======================== *Call for Open Registration: ICA 2017 Preconference* *Division Sponsor: Communication and Technology (CAT)* ** */Digital Media and Communication Research:/**/ A Venture in Forecasting and Intervention/* May 25, 2017, San Diego Hilton Bayfront Hotel *See also*http://www.icahdq.org/resource/resmgr/Conference/2017/PC19-schedule.pdf _Organizers_:*Leah A. Lievrouw*, Dept. of Information Studies, University of California, Los Angeles, and *Brian Loader*, Dept. of Sociology, University of York _Registration Fee_:$100.00 USD; open registration (no CFP). Register at http://www.icahdq.org _Description_: In his landmark 1976 volume, /The Coming of Post-Industrial Society/, sociologist Daniel Bell advanced a sweeping vision of the impending economic, cultural, and social changes associated with the dramatic post-war growth in media networks and institutions, information technologies, knowledge work, and services in developed societies. His modest subtitle -- /A Venture in Social Forecasting /-- hardly suggested the controversies and debates his book, and his vision, would provoke among early new media scholars, researchers and critics. More than 40 years on, after decades of socio-technical change that Bell could scarcely have imagined, participants in this day-long intensive preconference will engage in a new “venture” in forecasting to identify fruitful ways ahead for digital communication/new media studies. Using themes from the forthcoming /Routledge Handbook of Digital Media and Communication/ (Lievrouw & Loader, eds.) as points of departure, preconference participants and /Handbook /contributor-panelists will collaborate on a wide-ranging, prospective agenda for the next decade of theory, research and practice in communication and media studies under conditions of pervasively networked, digital mediation. *The preconference results/findings, highlights of the preconference discussions and participant contributions will be summarized and published in a special issue of the journal /Information, Communication & Society/, as part of celebrations marking iCS's twentieth year of publication. * In April 2017, the organizers will open an exclusive online forum where pre-publication selections from the /Handbook/ will be available to participants as background for discussion. Participants and panelists will be invited to engage in two to three brief Delphi-style rounds via the site ahead of the San Diego meeting, to focus their expert views on the most compelling, under-explored, or likely future issues, problem areas, and opportunities for intervention in digital/new media and communication research, scholarship and practice. On the preconference day, the /Handbook/ editors/conveners and contributor/panelists will lead all participants in a series of interactive plenary sessions which will explore the Delphi results and the book's main themes: the /artifacts/ (design, use and affordances of technology and devices, and the material conditions and embodiment of use), /practices/ (emerging and established forms of communicative action and engagement, cultural change and critique), and social/institutional /arrangements/ (macro-scale legal, economic or policy issues, social/political movements, industry trends, institutional and organizational formation and change) of digitally-mediated communication. Formats and activities of each session will depend on the topics being explored. The preconference will conclude with a general session, moderated by the organizers and *Lee Rainie, Director of Internet, Science and Technology Research of the Pew Research Center*, in which the main themes and issues identified throughout the day will be reviewed and summarized into a rough preliminary agenda for research and action. Following the ICA conference, the organizers will edit the preconference contributions into a collection for publication in /iCS/, circulating drafts and soliciting any further suggestions from participants via the preconference site. _Preconference Agenda_[TENTATIVE; session schedule and participants subject to change] 8:30-9:00 am***Coffee and Introductions, Preconference Goals * **Review of Preconference Activities & Schedule *Leah A. CfP: Algorithms, Automation, and News -- conference, special issue, and edited book
by Seth Lewis 14 Mar '17

14 Mar '17

Call for papers — “Algorithms, Automation, and News: Capabilities, Cases, and Consequences” See http://algorithmic.news * Conference in Munich, Germany — May 22–23, 2018 * Select papers published in special issue of Digital Journalism & proposed edited volume CONFERENCE BENEFITS: * Free hotel accommodation for presenters * Need-based travel stipends available for presenters * No conference fee * Precedes the 2018 ICA convention in nearby Prague ORGANIZERS & EDITORS: * Neil Thurman, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich * Seth C. Lewis, University of Oregon * With the assistance of Dr. Jessica Kunert, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich KEYNOTE SPEAKER: * Philip M. Napoli, Duke University CONFIRMED SPEAKERS: * C.W. Anderson, College of Staten Island & University of Leeds * Natali Helberger, University of Amsterdam * Nicholas Diakopoulos, University of Maryland CALL FOR PAPERS: We live in a world increasingly influenced by algorithms and automation. The ubiquity of computing in contemporary culture has resulted in human decision-making being augmented, and even partially replaced, by computational processes. Such augmentation and substitution is already common, and even predominates, in some industries. This trend is now spreading rapidly to the fourth estate—our news media. Algorithms and automation are increasingly implicated in many aspects of news production, distribution, and consumption. For example, algorithms are being used to filter the enormous quantities of content published on social media platforms, picking out what is potentially newsworthy and alerting journalists to its existence (Thurman et al., 2016). Meanwhile, automated journalism—the transforming of structured data on such things as sports results and financial earnings reports into narrative news texts with little to no human intervention aside from the original programming (Carlson, 2015)—grows apace. What began some years ago as small-scale experiments in machine-written news has, amid the development of big data broadly, become a global phenomenon, involving technology providers from the U.S. to Germany to China developing algorithms to deliver automated news in multiple languages (Dörr, 2016). And, algorithms are being used in new ways to distribute and package news content, both enabling consumers to request more of what they like and less of what they don’t and also making decisions on consumers’ behalf based on their behavioral traits, social networks, and personal characteristics (Groot Kormelink and Costera Meijer, 2014). Altogether, these developments raise questions about the social role of journalism as a longstanding facilitator of public knowledge. What are the implications for human labor and journalistic authority? for concerns around news quality, transparency, and accountability? for notions of who (or what) does journalism? for how news moves among various publics (or not)? Ultimately, what happens when editorial functions once performed by journalists are increasingly assumed by new sets of actors situated at the intersection of human and machine? Ultimately, what do algorithms and automation mean for journalism—its people, purposes, and processes; its norms, ethics, and values; its relationship with audiences and public life; and its obligations toward data management and user privacy? This three-part call—conference, special issue, and book project—takes up these and other questions by bringing together the latest scholarly research on algorithms, automation, and news. In particular, it seeks to organize research on capabilities, cases, and consequences associated with these technologies: explorations of the possibilities and perils, of theory and practice, and of comparative perspectives according to various sites and levels of analysis. Ultimately, we aim for research that provides a future orientation while grounded in appropriate historical context, contemporary empirical research, and rigorous conceptual development. By some accounts, the promise of algorithms and automation is that news may be faster and more personalized, that websites and apps may be more engaging, and even that quality journalism may be better funded, to the benefit of all. However, there are also concerns, including anxieties around: * the hidden biases built into bots deciding what’s newsworthy, * the ‘popularism’ that tracking trends inevitably promotes, * how misplaced trust in algorithmic agency might blunt journalists’ critical faculties, and * the privacy of data collected on individuals for the purposes of newsgathering and distribution. Moreover, as more news is templated or data-driven, there is unease about issues such as: * who and what gets reported, * the ethics of authorship and accountability, * the legal issues of libel by algorithm, * the availability of opportunities for professional development, training, and education, and * the continuity of fact-checking and analysis, among others. And, as more news is explicitly or implicitly personalized, there is disquiet about: * whether we will retreat into our own private information worlds, ‘protected’ from new, challenging and stimulating viewpoints, * the algorithmically oriented spread of ‘fake news’ within such filter bubbles, * the boundaries between editorial and advertising content, and * the transparency and accountability of the decisions made about what we get to read and watch. Through the conference, and the special issue and book to follow, we seek to facilitate conversation around these and related issues across a variety of academic fields, including computer science, information science, computational linguistics, media informatics, law and public policy, science and technology studies, philosophy, sociology, political science, and design, in addition to communication, media and journalism studies. We welcome original, unpublished articles drawing on a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches, with a preference for empirically driven and/or conceptually rich accounts. These papers might touch on a range of themes, including but not limited to the issues outlined above. Inquiries about this call are encouraged and should be directed to conference(a)algorithmic.news. TIMELINE: * July 15, 2017: abstract submission deadline. Abstracts should be 500-1,000 words (not including references) and sent to conference(a)algorithmic.news. 14 Mar '17

Colleagues, Submissions for the AoIR 2017 Doctoral Colloquium are now being accepted and are due by 20 May 2017. The colloquium is being to be held as part of the Association of Internet Researchers annual conference which is being held in Tartu, Estonia – 18-21 October 2017 (https://aoir.org/aoir2017/ ). The Association of Internet Researchers believes that its emerging researchers are the best in its disparate constituent fields. In keeping with its commitment to students’ scholarship, we continue the tradition of bringing emerging and established scholars together through the #AoIR2017 Doctoral Colloquium. The colloquium offers PhD students working in internet research or related fields a special, day-long forum, to be convened on 18 October 2017. For many years, this pre-conference event has provided students with the opportunity to spend a concentrated amount of time with senior scholars to share research projects, address methodological and theoretical challenges, and exchange informal advice on juggling the multiple pressures associated with job searching, publishing, and finishing the dissertation. We already have a great line up of mentors including: Andrew Herman (Wilfrid Laurier University - Canada), Sian Lincoln (Liverpool John Moores University - UK), Brady Robards (Monash University - Australia), Jennifer Stromer-Galley (Syracuse University - USA), Jenny Sundén (Södertörn University - Sweden) with more to be added. Interested students should prepare a) a two-page summary of their research. This should provide a context for the research, describe the methods being used, the progress to date, and primary concerns and issues; and b) a brief statement indicating why they want to participate in this doctoral colloquium and what they hope to get out of it. These are due on or before 20 May 2017 and should be submitted via the conference submission system. This information, and a link to the submission site can be found here: https://aoir.org/aoir2017/subinfo2017/ For further questions, don’t hesitate to contact the doctoral colloquium chairs at aoir2017dc [at] aoir [dot] org. Ways of Being Online Radboud International Summer School Course. Early bird deadline approaching! This may be of interest to a number of list members: Ways of Being in an Online Word - Towards a New Digital Psychology A one-week course at Radboud University, Nijmegen, the Netherlands August 7th - 11th, 2017 Do new technologies change the way we think, feel and act? The rules governing the behaviours and minds of humans are routinely studied by psychologists, but with little reference to everyday life after the digital revolution. While the media depict our interactions with an online world as both enticing and dangerous, this course takes a look at contemporary research and theory with an aim of outlining principles of a "new psychology". A particular focus will be on the social and cognitive factors that are relevant for how we interact with technology and how we interact with each other through technology. The course is designed for an interdisciplinary group of participants. Next to psychology, neighbouring disciplines such as Communication Studies and Computer Science provide a suitable background. The course is led by Jens Binder, Nottingham Trent University, Nottingham, UK For more information visit: http://www.ru.nl/radboudsummerschool/courses/2017/being-online-world-toward… Early bird discount applies until April 1st! Today is the last day to send your abstracts in for the Fan Studies Network Conference 2017! *The Fan Studies Network 2017 Conference* *24-25th June 2017Centre for Participatory Culture,* *University of Huddersfield, UK* *Keynote Speaker: Dr Louisa Stein (Middlebury College, USA) * *Plenary Address: Professor Matt Hills (University of Huddersfield, UK)* The fifth anniversary of the annual Fan Studies Network Conference is visiting the University of Huddersfield for a vibrant two-day programme during June 2017. The conference will celebrate and continue FSN’s proud tradition of offering an enthusiastic space for interdisciplinary researchers at all levels to connect, share resources, and further develop their research ideas. In addition to panel presentations, the two days will feature social events, speed geeking, and workshop discussions. We are delighted to welcome Dr Louisa Stein as the keynote speaker for FSN2017. Louisa is Assistant Professor of Film and Media Culture at Middlebury College; where she teaches classes on remix culture, spectatorship, YouTube, and gender and sexuality in media. Louisa is author of *Millennial Fandom: Television Audiences in the Transmedia Age*, and co-editor of *Sherlock and Transmedia Fandom *and* Teen Television: Programming and Fandom*. The event will also feature a plenary address from Professor Matt Hills, who, due to being the keynote of the first ever FSN conference, will reflect on the past five years of the network and the fan studies field. Matt is Professor of Media and Journalism at the University of Huddersfield, where he is co-director of the Centre for Participatory Culture. He has written six sole-authored research monographs, starting with the influential *Fan Cultures* in 2002 and most recently with *Doctor Who: The Unfolding Event* in 2015, as well as publishing more than a hundred book chapters and journal articles in the areas of media fandom, cult film/TV and audiences in the digital era. FSN2017 is sponsored by the Centre for Participatory Culture at the University of Huddersfield, which will have its official launch the day before our conference. Attendees of FSN2017 will be able to attend the centre launch for free – the Centre will announce full details of this event in the coming weeks. We invite abstracts of no more than 300 words for papers that address any aspect of fandom or fan studies. We also welcome collated submissions for pre-constituted panels. We encourage new members, in all stages of study, to the network and welcome proposals for presentations on, but not limited to, the following possible topics: – Fandom and grief/mourning – Representations of fans in media & popular culture – Fandom and sports – Fandom and race – Political fandom – Non-technological practices in fandom – Fan conventions and offline spaces – Histories and archives of fandom – Non-Western fan cultures – Ethics and methodology in fan studies – Interdisciplinary approaches to fan studies – Anti-Fandom and Non-Fandom – The future directions of fan studies – The ‘dark’ or ‘toxic’ side of fandom We also invite expressions of interest (100-200 words) from anyone wishing to present as part of our popular ‘speed geeking’ session. This would involve each speaker presenting a short discussion on a relevant topic of their choosing to a number of small groups, and then receiving instantaneous feedback, making it ideal for presenting in-progress or undeveloped ideas. If you have any questions about this format of presentation, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Please send any abstracts/enquires to: fsnconference(a)gmail.com by *13th MARCH 2017*. Please include up to three keywords for your submission and a short biographical note. You can join the discussion about the event on Twitter using #FSN2017, or visit http://www.fanstudies.org.
