Funding opportunity for joint research projects between academics and advocacy groups. Nathalie >> From: Internet Policy Observatory <internetpolicy(a)asc.upenn.edu> >> Date: March 8, 2017 at 12:00:14 PM GMT+1 >> To: <marechal(a)usc.edu> >> Subject: Call for proposals: Joint digital rights research/advocacy projects >> Reply-To: Internet Policy Observatory <internetpolicy(a)asc.upenn.edu> >> >> >> >> Call for Proposals: Joint Digital Rights & Internet Policy Research Projects >> Within the constellation of actors engaged in internet policy and digital rights debates, academics are uniquely positioned to mobilize evidence-based research for advocacy and policymaking. However, the research conducted within academic communities is often siloed within disciplinary spaces and only occasionally produced in collaboration with activists and with impact objectives in mind. >> >> The Internet Policy Observatory at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania invites organizations and individuals to apply for funding for research projects that have specific and tangible policy & advocacy impact objectives. Individual or joint applications are encouraged from civil society organizations, those working in digital rights advocacy and policymaking, and those engaged in academic research. The goal of this call for proposals is to generate collaborative research projects on topics of relevance to the internet freedom community that are empirically rigorous as well as pertinent to current international, regional, or local digital rights advocacy efforts. >> >> Requirements: >> >> Applications should propose a research project that would provide empirical weight and further advocacy efforts in an area related to digital rights and internet freedoms. Topics of relevance include but are not limited to access to online resources, freedom of expression online, the economic and social effects of internet policies, ICT companies and human rights, privacy and surveillance online. Applicants should be able to justify the need for the research and are expected to produce a set of deliverables that are relevant to academic, advocacy, and policymaking communities. >> >> The organizing committee will accept several categories of applications. These include: >> >> Individual academics looking to partner with a relevant advocacy organization to integrate his/her research into current advocacy campaigns or policymaking debates. >> Civil Society organizations currently engaged in advocacy campaigns that seek to identify a research partner able to operationalize a particular research question of interest/relevance to the organization’s current work. >> Joint applications between a researcher/research team and one organization engaged in advocacy, activism, or policymaking. Joint applications can come from newly established partnerships or from groups that have worked together in the past. >> For the first two types of applicants, the IPO team will work with promising individuals and groups who apply after the initial application process to help identify relevant partners and build the project. >> >> Funded projects will be expected to include the following deliverables: >> >> An academic paper/report to be submitted for peer review and/or published with the IPO. >> A shorter-form, digestible, media-ready product to be distributed to appropriate stakeholders (policymakers, politicians, the public). >> Examples include short reports, user guides, primers, infographics, etc. >> A publicity plan for impact: How will your team publicize the findings amongst relevant stakeholders to maximize policy and advocacy impact. This can include a media plan, small launch event or private meeting with stakeholders, among other ideas. >> The IPO invites applications on a rolling basis. The closing date for all applications for review will be April 30. Applications should include a concept note between 3-5 pages (detailed information on application requirements are available here). Joint proposals will be provided up to $15,000 USD as seed funding for pilot projects that could later become larger and longer-term collaborative initiatives. >> >> For more information, please see the full call here or email internetpolicy(a)asc.upenn.edu. >> >> >> Reminder: Apply to the 19th Annenberg-Oxford Media Policy Summer Institute >> Held this June 26- July 7, the Annenberg-Oxford Media Policy Summer Institute brings together top early career communications scholars, media lawyers and regulators, human rights activists, and policymakers from countries around the world to discuss the effects of technology and policy from a global and multidisciplinary perspective. The Summer Institute provides participants with an intensive two week curriculum that combines expert instruction from media policymakers and scholars with hands-on activities such as stakeholder mapping, policy analysis, group case studies, and participant presentations. Ethics & data collection on Facebook
by Denise N. Rall 08 Mar '17

08 Mar '17

Dear AIR-ers - One of my students is working on Fb ethics to collect data from three Fb sites that she manages to market &resell womens’ 1950-style clothing (yes I work in fashion now). I know we already had a long series of posts on reddit - but I would very much appreciate any references I can pass along to her. She’s got a few papers off google scholar, I just think she might be missing the significant contribution from one of the AoIR members. [Note: I’m back on Air-l after a 7 year absence and now looking forward to seeing a few familiar faces in Brisbane in 2019 - on MY side of the world! Lismore is about 2.5-3 hours from Brisbane]. Call for abstracts: Our data futures workshop, MyData 2017 conference, Tallinn, 30.8.2017
by Tuukka Lehtiniemi 08 Mar '17

08 Mar '17

OUR DATA FUTURES Datafication, referring to the conversion of life into digital data, generates new societal opportunities alongside power asymmetries. Initiatives, such as MyData, Open mHealth, MIDATA.coop, Hub of All Things, and Open Humans take datafication as a starting point, but try to steer data flows and data practices in a societally more sustainable direction. These initiatives address asymmetries in terms of data usage and distribution, or inadequacies of existing ethical and regulatory frameworks; they push for the rearticulation of concepts such as participation, sharing, governance, or public good. This workshop of the MyData 2017 conference invites scholars, participating in and studying such data-driven initiatives, to discuss how the capacities of data technology might be harnessed to promote social justice, new forms of agency, political participation, and collective action. We are also interested in research on data activism and how uses of data challenge accepted norms, assumptions and ideological projects. The aim is to promote debate on the ways forms of data are thought to guide, or shape us as we move into data futures, and whether the data initiatives succeed in promoting new communities of producers and users of data. Workshop: 30.8.2017 at Tallinn University, Tallinn, Estonia Abstract deadline: 300 words by 2.5.2017 Details are available at http://mydata2017.org/session/our-data-futures/ <http://mydata2017.org/session/our-data-futures/> The workshop is arranged in connection to the MyData 2017 conference, Helsinki, Finland & Tallinn, Estonia, 30.8. – 1.9.2017. http://www.mydata2017.org/ <http://www.mydata2017.org/> Regards, Minna Ruckenstein, Indrek Ibrus and Tuukka Lehtiniemi

ISAGA 2017: Thematic Session on Serious Moral Games
by Markus Christen 08 Mar '17

08 Mar '17

ISAGA Conference in Delft, 10.-14.07.2017 Call for Papers and Game Demonstrations: Thematic Session on Serious Moral Games - deadline extended until March 20 The purpose of this thematic session is to bring together experts from diverse disciplines and areas of practice to share knowledge about the design, development, and evaluation of serious moral games (SMGs), i.e. games that explicitly try to stimulate learning in the moral domain. On the one hand, we are looking for research presentations (call for papers / extended abstracts). On the other hand, we want to organize a forum for the presentation and discussion of existing SMGs, or games, which are currently being developed (call for game demonstrations). By SMGs, we denote games that aren't only played for the gaming experience itself, but also with the explicit aim to achieve learning related to morality and ethics, e.g. the development of moral competences, ethical values and attitudes, schemes and skills for moral and pro-social behavior, etc. The purpose of SMGs is to stimulate this learning process in a playful manner. We believe this specific type of game to hold a vastly unexplored potential to promote moral development and action. While various video games and other types of games, as well as simulations, already qualify as playful approaches for the development of morality, and research on the promotion of morality through video games is thriving, we believe that a more systematic investigation of game mechanisms that promote morality and a more rigorous analysis regarding their effects with respect to the development of moral competences is needed. Relating to the theme of the ISAGA2017 conference (www.isaga2017.com) we would be particularly keen to feature papers and game presentations on SMGs concerning sustainable cities and smart infrastructures. However, presentations around SMGs for any target group of learners are welcome, e.g. SMGs for the ethical training of bankers. Presentations are invited for either one, or both sessions. Call for Papers / Extended Abstracts (thematic session I) We cordially invite you to submit extended abstracts (not full papers). Extended abstracts (300-500 words, excluding title and references) must relate in one or the other way to SMGs and can, but are not restricted to, cover one of the following topics: - Training goals: Which moral competences should be trained in SMGs? - Strategy & Effectiveness: Learning mechanisms for the game-based development of morality? Methods for the investigation and evaluation of SMGs? - Transferability: How to stimulate a real impact of game-based learning on ethical practice? - Measuring morality: Measuring moral behavior or the attainment of learning outcomes. - Testing: SMG testing in (quasi-)experimental research. - Efficiency: How to achieve a maximum moral learning effect with a small production budget? - Target groups: SMGs for professionals, e.g. architects and city planners, medical practitioners, police officers, students, migrants. - Advantages and limitations: Purposes, benefits and risks of SMGs. The extended abstracts submitted to this thematic session will be subject to a double-blind peer-review process organized by this session's committee. Up to six abstracts will be selected for presentation. In this thematic session (180 minutes), presentations will be held (max. 20 min) followed by an extended discussion (min. 10 min). Publications of Contributions: All extended abstracts for this session will be published in the conference's digital proceedings, which the participants will receive at the start of the conference. Authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to submit a full paper (after the conference). The full paper will be peer-reviewed and then published in a special issue of Ethics and Information Technology (Springer). Further details will follow. Call for Game Demonstrations (thematic session II) The second part of our thematic session will be dedicated to demonstration of SMGs (180 minutes). In the beginning, participants will shortly present their game (10 minutes), followed by a forum (a kind of "market place") where the conference participants can test out games individually, speak with the presenters and discuss with each other. The goal of this workshop is to share SMGs in an expert circle and to receive constructive feedback on selected topics (e.g., game methodology, game design.). To submit a game for a game-play-demonstration-workshop, please submit the following information: - Name(s) of the contributors - Name(s) of the game designers - Year of the latest version of the game - Type of game (e.g. board game, video game.) - Main user group - Short summary of the game theme - Non-entertainment goals of the game (e.g., desired learning outcomes.) Submission and Deadlines Extended abstracts for thematic session I - Submission opens January 2017 - Extended deadline for submission (paper) 20 March 2017 - Feedback from reviewers 31 March 2017 Game Demonstrations for thematic session II - Submission opens January 2017 - Deadline for submission of (game demo) 31 March 2017 - Feedback from reviewers 15 April 2017 Contributions can be submitted via PDF to smg(a)bf.uzh.ch. More information about ISAGA 2017 can be found online on the conference website: www.isaga2017.com For further information about submissions please contact the thematic session organizing committee on smg(a)bf.uzh.ch.

Help with researching radical jihadist groups on Telegram and other social media
by Kramer, Howard 08 Mar '17

08 Mar '17

I'm working on a dissertation proposal on the topic of Jihadist Fanboys/Fangirls: the Role of Social Media and Fandom in Attracting Young Western Audiences to ISIS and Other Radical Groups. The heart of this study will focus on the social media content and networking (via Twitter, Telegram and other networks) of ISIS and other jihadist sympathizers, perhaps outright members and supporters. Since ISIS has been more or less chased off Twitter I've been trying to find and follow their social media activities on Telegram but have had a hard time locating their channels on that platform. I'm writing to see if anyone can provide any guidance on accessing this type of content on Telegram and other social media. Call for Papers: ACM RecSys 2017
by Christoph Trattner 07 Mar '17

07 Mar '17

** Please forward to anyone who might be interested ** -------------------------------------------------------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS ACM Conference on Recommender Systems (RecSys 2017) to be held in Como, Italy, 27th-31th August 2017 https://recsys.acm.org/recsys17/ -------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear all, We are pleased to invite you to contribute to the Eleventh ACM Conference on Recommender Systems (RecSys 2017), the premier venue for research and applications of recommendation technologies. The upcoming RecSys conference will be held in Como, Italy, from August, 27th to August 31st, 2017. The conference will continue RecSys’ practice of connecting the research and practitioner communities to exchange ideas, frame problems, and share solutions. All the accepted papers will be published by ACM. We construe recommender systems broadly, including applications ranging from e-commerce to social networking, platforms from web to mobile and beyond, and a wide variety of technologies ranging from collaborative filtering to knowledge-based reasoning. Topics of interest for RecSys 2017 include (but are not limited to): - Algorithm scalability - Case studies of real-world implementations - Conversational recommender systems - Context-aware recommenders - Evaluation metrics and studies - Explanations and evidence - Field and user studies - Group recommenders - Innovative/New applications - Machine learning for recommendation - Mobile and multi-channel recommendations - Novel paradigms - Personalisation - Preference elicitation - Privacy and Security - Recommendation algorithms - Social recommenders - Semantic technologies for recommendation - Trust and reputation - Theoretical foundations - User interaction and interfaces - User modelling The authors will be asked to indicate whether their paper is primarily Algorithm or Application focussed. Algorithm papers should discuss novel algorithmic approaches to recommendation challenges, with appropriate evaluations and comparisons to baseline works. Application papers should discuss new domains or large-scale applications of recommenders or focus on user experience, interface, or impact. This will allow the PC Chairs to better assign reviewers and to balance the program. PAPER SUBMISSION CATEGORIES LONG PAPERS should report on substantial contributions of lasting value. The maximum length is 8 pages (plus up to 1 page references). Each accepted long paper will be included in the conference proceedings and presented in a plenary session as part of the main conference program. We expect the review process to be highly selective: the acceptance rates for full papers in the past three years were 20-24%. SHORT PAPERS typically discuss exciting new work that is not yet mature enough for a long paper. The maximum length is 4 pages (plus up to 1 page references). Each accepted short paper will be included in the conference proceedings and presented in a plenary session as part of the main conference. The presentation may include a system demonstration. Note that rejected long paper submissions will not be considered as short papers. SIGCHI SUBMITTER AGREEMENT RecSys 2017 is a SIGCHI conference and making a submission to a SIGCHI conference is a serious matter. Submissions require time and effort by SIGCHI volunteers to organise and manage the reviewing process, and, if the submission is accepted, the publication and presentation process. Thus, anyone who submits to RecSys 2017 implicitly confirms the following statements: - I confirm that this submission is the work of myself and my co-authors. - I confirm that I or my co-authors hold copyright to the content, and have obtained appropriate permissions for any portions of the content that are copyrighted by others. - I confirm that any research reported in this submission involving human subjects has gone through the appropriate approval process at my institution. - I confirm that if this paper is accepted, I or one of my co-authors will attend the conference. Papers that are not presented at the conference by an author may be removed from the proceedings at the discretion of the program chairs. PAPER FORMAT AND SUBMISSION All submissions and reviews will be handled electronically. RecSys 2017 submissions should be prepared according to the standard double-column ACM SIG proceedings format. Additional information about formatting and style files is available online, see: http://www.acm.org/public ations/proceedings-template Papers must be submitted to EasyChair by 23:59, AoE (Anywhere on Earth) on April 3rd, 2017, see: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=recsys2017 There will be no extensions to the submission deadline. The peer review process is double-blind (i.e. anonymised). This means that all submissions must not include information identifying the authors or their organisation. Specifically, do not include the authors’ names and affiliations, anonymise citations to your previous work and avoid providing any other information that would allow to identify the authors, such as acknowledgments and funding. Please take note that the official publication date is the date the proceedings are made available in the ACM Digital Library. This date may be up to two weeks prior to the first day of the conference. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work. IMPORTANT DATES Abstract submission deadline: March 27th, 2017 Paper submission deadline: April 3rd, 2017 Author notification: June 12th, 2017 Camera-ready version deadline: July 7th, 2017 Deadlines refer to 23:59 (11:59pm) in the AoE (Anywhere on Earth) time zone. Next week: Social Justice and Datafication / Launch of Data Justice Lab, Cardiff University
by Arne Hintz 07 Mar '17

07 Mar '17

Social Justice in an Age of Datafication: Launching the Data Justice Lab Friday 17 March, 4pm Cardiff University, UK Our financial transactions, communications, movements, relationships, and interactions with government and corporations all increasingly generate data that are used to profile and sort groups and individuals. These processes can affect both individuals as well as entire communities that may be denied services and access to opportunities, or wrongfully targeted and exploited. In short, they impact on our ability to participate in society. The emergence of this data paradigm therefore introduces a particular set of power dynamics requiring investigation and critique. The Data Justice Lab (https://datajusticelab.org/) is a new space for research and collaboration at Cardiff University that has been established to examine the relationship between datafication and social justice. With this launch event, we ask: What does social justice mean in an age of datafication? How are data-driven processes impacting on certain communities? In what way does big data change our understanding of governance and politics? And what can we do about it? Keynote speakers: Virginia Eubanks (New America) Malavika Jayaram (Digital Asia Hub) Steven Renderos (Center for Media Justice) The event will be followed by a reception. The launch event is free but requires pre-booking at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/social-justice-in-an-age-of-datafication-launc… More information at https://datajusticelab.org/2017/02/13/social-justice-in-an-age-of-dataficat… ---------------- Dr Arne Hintz Senior Lecturer | Director MA Digital Media and Society Co-Director Data Justice Lab School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies | Cardiff University Bute Building, King Edward VII Avenue | Cardiff CF10 3NB Email: HintzA(a)cardiff.ac.uk | Tel: +44 (0)29 208 76281 | Twitter: @arne_hz Fellow | Center for Media, Data and Society | Central European University

New Open Access Book: The Web as History: Using Web Archives to Understand the Past and the Present
by Major, Alison 07 Mar '17

07 Mar '17

***We apologise for any cross-posting*** UCL Press is delighted to announce the publication of a new open access book that may be of interest to readers of this list: The Web as History: Using Web Archives to Understand the Past and the Present, edited by Niels Brügger and Ralph Schroeder. Download free: https://goo.gl/q3xQGq ******************************************************* The Web as History: Using Web Archives to Understand the Past and the Present Edited by Niels Brügger and Ralph Schroeder Download free: https://goo.gl/q3xQGq ******************************************************* The World Wide Web has now been in use for more than 20 years. From early browsers to today's principal source of information, entertainment and much else, the Web is an integral part of our daily lives, to the extent that some people believe 'if it's not online, it doesn't exist.' While this statement is not entirely true, it is becoming increasingly accurate, and reflects the Web's role as an indispensable treasure trove. It is curious, therefore, that historians and social scientists have thus far made little use of the Web to investigate historical patterns of culture and society, despite making good use of letters, novels, newspapers, radio and television programmes, and other pre-digital artefacts. This volume argues that now is the time to question what we have learnt from the Web so far. The 12 chapters explore this topic from a number of interdisciplinary angles - through histories of national web spaces and case studies of different government and media domains - as well as an introduction that provides an overview of this exciting new area of research.
