A Statement from Members of the AoIR Executive Committee
by Jennifer Stromer-Galley 03 Mar '17

03 Mar '17

In light of the United States' January 27, 2017 executive order restricting entry to its borders, based upon intersectional stereotypes of Islamic religious faith as embodied within Middle Eastern, African, and South Asian identity, we hereby restate our commitment to the fundamental values upon which the Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) is founded. These values center upon human dignity, equality of opportunity, and the principles of academic freedom. AoIR vehemently opposes any entities, groups, measures, or activities that seek to undermine such principles, in scholarly research and in society at large, wherever in the world they may operate. AoIR, following its mission to provide and promote outstanding research upon the Internet's capacity to mediate transnational and global culture through networking, is proud to represent a diverse international community of Internet researchers. In affirming the shared values of our community, we encourage our members to exercise their inalienable right to speak out whenever and wherever they believe those values to be undermined or violated. In keeping with the principle of academic freedom, AoIR conferences themselves also support that free exercise by offering a venue for such discussions to be conducted respectfully. AoIR is constantly at work to ensure that our actions and our words are in sync. Therefore, we proudly state that we do not tolerate or create any undue barriers to the full and equal participation of its members because of race, age, culture, ability, ethnicity or nationality, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, marital status, religious affiliation, or socioeconomic status. This commitment means, in particular, that we will endeavor to not stage future conferences in locations where such participation cannot be guaranteed. As an organization, AoIR stands ready to support any colleague who may be directly or indirectly affected by this order. Members of the Executive Committee: André Brock Axel Bruns Jenny Korn Annette Markham Adrienne Massanari Susanna Paasonen Kelly Quinn Jennifer Stromer-Galley P.S.: Our full Statement of Principles and Statement of Inclusivity can be found here: https://aoir.org/diversity-and-inclusivity/

Digital Media, Psychoanalysis and the Subject - CM special issue published
by Jacob Johanssen 03 Mar '17

03 Mar '17

*Digital Media, Psychoanalysis and the Subject Editors: Jacob Johanssen (University of Westminster) and Steffen Krüger (University of Oslo)* We are very pleased to announce the publication of the special issue Digital Media, Psychoanalysis and the Subject, published by the open access journal *CM: Communication and Media*. This is the first-ever special issue of a media and communication journal that addresses questions of subjectivity, digital media and the Internet with a focus on psychoanalytic theory. The contributing authors seek to reassess and reinvigorate psychoanalytic thinking in media and communication studies. They undertake this reassessment with a particular focus on the question of what psychoanalytic concepts, theories and modes of inquiry can contribute to the study of contemporary digital media. The collection features a broad range of psychoanalytic approaches - from Freudian, via Kleinian and relational, to Lacanian and Jungian - and covers a wide range of issues - from the uses (and abuses) of the mobile phone and other digital devices, the circulation of traumatising images and anxiety-inducing tracking apps, via hysteric feminist discourses, digital fetishes and the exploitation of YouTube celebrities, to the meaning of the gangbang in a priapistic media culture and this culture's emptying-out of meaning towards its climax in a cosmic spasm... We hope that colleagues will find this collection informative and engaging and a helpful resource for their own work. *Table of Contents and Download Links:* Thinking (with) the Unconscious in Media and Communication Studies: Introduction to the Special Issue Steffen Krüger (University of Oslo) and Jacob Johanssen (University of Westminster) http://aseestant.ceon.rs/index.php/comman/article/view/13131/5045 Framing the Mobile Phone: The Psychopathologies of an Everyday Object Iain MacRury and Candida Yates (Bournemouth University) http://aseestant.ceon.rs/index.php/comman/article/view/11517/5044 '"If you show your real face, you’ll lose 10 000 followers” – The Gaze of the Other and Transformations of Shame in Digitalized Relationships Vera King (Sigmund-Freud-Institute & Goethe-University) http://aseestant.ceon.rs/index.php/comman/article/view/11504/5043 Media Traumatization, Symbolic Wounds and Digital Culture Allen Meek (Massey University) http://aseestant.ceon.rs/index.php/comman/article/view/11442/5041 The Other Self in Free Fall: Anxiety and Automated Tracking Applications Christopher Gutierrez (McGill University) http://aseestant.ceon.rs/index.php/comman/article/view/11285/5038 Digital Feminisms and the Split Subject: Short-circuits through Lacan’s Four Discourses Alison Horbury (University of Melbourne) http://aseestant.ceon.rs/index.php/comman/article/view/11347/5039 A Digital Death Drive? Thanks to Jennifer for the posting, and Holly and David for their contribution. I found myself looking for a like button (unconsciously), it took me a few seconds to realise this is email. It was early in the morning. I have been very concerned about conferences being held in the US in this current situation. Though I do not believe our (and other communities') actions will make any noticeable difference in the economy (as a means of telling), I think we owe it to our colleagues and to ourselves. I will be following this thread closely to see where the next venues will be. Keep up the good work, and thanks. -- Daniel Jung

Internet of Rights Fellowship - ARTICLE 19
by Niels ten Oever 03 Mar '17

03 Mar '17

The Internet is shaping our societies but who is shaping the development of the Internet? And what standards should this development be based on? The Internet of Rights Fellowship Program aims to facilitate stronger considerations for human rights within Internet governance processes and to shape the human rights agenda for the Internet. Currently, there is little diversity among participants in Internet governance proce sses, resulting in approaches to policymaking that are not open or inclusive. ARTICLE 19 seeks to effectively promote and protect key democratic values and increase the diversity of engagement within Internet governance forums, so that there is a greater pluralism of voices within these spaces that especially includes those that have been underrepresented until now. Over the course of this program, Fellows will be introduced to the technical and policy discussions across the Internet governance landscape, and will be trained to meaningfully develop human rights considerations within these discussions. As a result, Fellows will be well-equipped to continue developing a robust approach to human rights within these technical communities beyond the life of the program. The structure of the work will be very much based on training and mentoring while actively engaging in on-going Internet governance processes in the IEEE, ICANN, IETF and ITU. Work with us on concrete workstreams, or suggest your own project! More information about the programme, the streams and the application process can be found here: https://www.article19.org/pages/en/article-19-fellowships.html Length of the programme: 1 year (with the possibility of 1 year extension) Start: May 2017 Deadline for application: March 17 2017 Which forums are focused on: IEEE, ICANN, IETF, ITU Non-salaried (but travel to IG fora, accommodation and other costs are covered) If you have any questions, please feel free to contact mehwish(a)article19.org or me. CfP: Futures of Digital Death: Mobilities of Loss and Commemoration
by Selina Ellis Gray 03 Mar '17

03 Mar '17

Death Studies Issue Call For Papers- 'Futures of Digital Death: Mobilities of Loss and Commemoration'. Deadline: 29th September 2017 As our lives and death become increasingly entangled within the digital, a new strand of research has emerged, exploring the opportunities and tensions that technologies can bring within the space of death, dying, and existential concern. A dominant focus has been on exploring and designing technologies supporting death-centric practices around remembrance of loved ones or inheritance of digital artifacts. However, less attention has been paid to how people are actively engaging in curating such data in both the physical and digital space for greater personal value. Ways in which we deal with digital selves, the body and its remains, the memorialization of lost ones, and the spatio-temporal and social context surrounding such practices have shifted the way in which we engage with death, from prescribed and formal to more dynamic, flexible and personally meaningful. This leads to a new range of research questions that require a genuinely interdisciplinary approach. This special issue focuses on the exploration of these emerging practices. We invite contributions that bring analytical, critical, practice-based and creative insights to the use, design and development of technologies entangled at the end of life. Theoretical, empirical, practical and design or art-based research and approaches are welcome. Themes may include: - Mobilities of death, loss and commemoration - The digital economies of death, dying, commemoration and loss - Dying online or digital mediations of death - Personalization and hybridization of rituals, digital memorialization, mourning practices - Digital afterlives, agency and the social presence of the dead - Digital remains, digital legacy, peri- or post mortem data - The multiple physical, informational, imaginative mobilities of death, loss and memory - The multiplying temporalities of practices, memories, experiences - Methodological considerations, e.g. ethics, privacy, value sensitive design - Methodological orientation to futures - e.g. use of utopia as method, scenarios, predictions, visions.
