Special Issue: Social Media & Business Practices in Emerging Markets ------------------------------ Special issue call for papers from Journal of Advances in Management Research *“Social Media & Business Practices in the Emerging Markets” Journal of Advances in Management Research Special Issue* Journal of Advances in Management Research of Emerald Group Publishing invites high quality manuscripts for a special issue entitled 'Social Media & Business Practices in Emerging Markets’. Businesses use social media platforms in all the possible domains – marketing, customer relationship management, recruitment, brand management, market research and new product development etc. The extant management research is predominantly focusing on the developed markets, apart from abundant research on political activism or governance in the developing world. Out of the management research, digital marketing, with a special focus on social media platforms, are relatively numerous than other areas. There is a need for going beyond marketing and the developed world. The emerging and developing markets offer different challenges while deploying social media for various business functions. The ownership and usage of social media platforms in these markets differ significantly than the developed ones. Though the reasons are known - differential penetration rates, content availability, cost of broadband access, affordability of devices, weaker network externalities and regulatory frameworks, state-of-the art of social media strategies in the developing world is still emerging. The knowledge in this domain also seems to be sparse. Businesses, both local and multinationals, compete with each other in winning the emerging markets. The proven frameworks and social media strategies are from the developed markets of better wired consumers. They need to be customized or adapted, and subsequently disseminated. The proposed special issue is an attempt in this direction. The special issue invites high quality manuscripts that are grounded in empirical data and should be focused on the developing and emerging markets. The analysis of the data can be from traditional research methods and from social media analytics. Following are the possible questions (not exhaustive): How do firms in low-networked markets select and use specific social media platforms?; Is there a distinct social media strategy among the developing market firms?; Whether firms exploit the selected features of social media platforms? Whether firms differentiate between home grown and global social media platforms?; Is there a different device strategy adapted by the firms?; Whether CEOs in emerging markets think differently of social media platforms? Why?; What are the implications of introducing social media functions on the organizational structure?; Whether social media platforms are exploited in functions beyond marketing?; What is the impact of regulatory environment on the businesses’ use of social media?; How are firms handling social media skill deficiencies?; How are social media activities measured, and investments are evaluated?; What kind of insights and opportunities do social media data provide? Just a quick reminder that the deadline for abstract submissions to our ICA preconference on Digital Inequalities and Discrimination in the Big Data Era is this Friday, Feb. 10. -Jenifer *DIGITAL INEQUALITIES AND DISCRIMINATION IN THE BIG DATA ERA* *Preconference of the International Communication Association '17* May 25, 2017, San Diego Hilton Bayfront, San Diego, California (USA) Co-sponsored by the Pacific ICTD Collaborative, the School of Communications (University of Hawaii at Manoa), and the Institute for Information Policy (Penn State University) *Abstracts due: February 10, 2017 * *CALL FOR PAPERS* A growing number of ordinary objects are being redesigned to include digital sensors, computing power, and communication capabilities – and new objects, and processes, are becoming part of the Internet. This emerging Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem – networks of physical objects embedded with the ability to sense, and sometimes act upon, their environment, as well as related communication, applications, and data analysis, enables data to be collected from billions of everyday objects. The emerging datasphere made possible by these developments offers immense potential to serve the public good by fostering government transparency, energy conservation, participatory governance, and substantial advances in medical research and care. On the other hand, a growing body of research addresses emerging privacy and civil liberties concerns related to big data, including unjust discrimination and unequal access to data and the tools needed to make use of it. For example, big data analytics may reveal patterns that were previously not detectable. Data about a variety of daily tasks that seem trivial is increasingly being federated and used to reveal associations or behaviors, and these analyses and the decisions made based on them pose potential harms to individuals or groups. Many transactions that seemed innocuous can now be used to discriminate – one’s movement throughout the day, items purchased at the store, television programs watched, “friends” added or looked at on social networks, or individuals communicated with or who were in close proximity to the subject at various times, can all be used to make judgements that affect an individual and his or her life chances. With the advent of artificial intelligence and machine learning, we are increasingly moving to a world where many decisions around us are shaped by these calculations rather than traditional human judgement. For example, sensitive personal information or behaviors (e.g., political or health-related) may be used to discriminate when individuals seek housing, immigration eligibility, medical care, education, bank loans or other financial services, insurance, or employment. At the same time, individuals, groups, or regions may also be disadvantaged due to a lack of access to data (or related skills and tools) to make use of big data in ways that benefit their lives and communities. This preconference session seeks to advance understanding of digital inequalities and discrimination related to big data and big data analytics. *Papers between 5,000-8,000 words and position papers between 1,000-2,000 words are welcomed.* *TOPICS OF INTEREST* We welcome scholarly and applied research on, but not limited to, the following: • Social, economic, and ethical implications of big data analytics in a variety of contexts (e.g., access to housing, immigration, medical care, education, bank loans or other financial services, insurance, or employment). • Perspectives on big data from scholars from emerging economies or traditionally marginalized groups. • Predictive analytics, algorithmic discrimination, and artificial-intelligence-based decision making. • Digital inequalities, such as unequal access to big data sets, skills, or tools. • Emerging data literacies. • Use of big data to counter social and economic inequality (e.g., promoting civil rights and social justice). • Disclosure of algorithms, algorithmic transparency, and the public good. • Big data, security and encryption (potential for hacking, theft, third-party abuse). • Government and corporate surveillance. • Big data brokers and sale of personal data (is privacy a commodity or a right?) • International norms and standards for big data. • Policy/legal analysis related to big data and the preconference theme (e.g., standards of liability for injury and defective work products (algorithms/burden of proof), the challenge of Notice and Consent, liability for bad or false or slanted or insufficient data collection, government regimes for supervision of big data policies). • Consumer bill of rights for big data. • Big data and anonymity, re-identification of anonymous data. • Big data vs. privacy as an essential condition for safeguarding free speech, intellectual property (i.e., how IP laws impact big data), or Constitutional rights of freedom of assembly and association. *Integrated Security* Department of Political Science College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University The Department of Political Science at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of Integrated Security. This faculty search is part of a cross-college cluster hire being conducted in the Integrated Security Destination Area (http://provost.vt.edu/destination-areas.html) which is one of several focused Virginia Tech initiatives to recruit and support world-class groups of faculty that bridge disciplinary strengths. This initial hire focuses on multiple aspects of today’s embedded cyber-physical/human systems. We seek a colleague who will build upon our departmental, college, and university strengths in the study of all dimensions of governance, privacy, and security at the interconnections of the digital and physical worlds as humans, groups, institutions, and systems link these domains of complex action. Over the next four years, the number of Internet-connected devices will more than double, changing the ways people interact with technologies and their environments; however, fundamental security and privacy challenges have yet to be adequately addressed for these new technologies. This cluster hire will foster cross-disciplinary collaborations that explore these challenges through the lenses of technology, law, governance, ethics, and business. We are interested in applicants who can demonstrate research and teaching expertise in one or more of the following domains of inquiry: human security and insecurity (broadly defined) in “the Internet of things”; the effects of these new developments on politics, governance, and security in organizations, states, or other entities; U.S. national, subnational, or transnational responses to network security threats; human governance of cyber-physical systems, property regimes, or regulatory organizations; security and governance questions related to immigration, refugee flows, cross-border movements, and displaced populations; security and class, gender, and/or race/ethnicity. Focusing on these governance issues and public policy responses in North America is the main emphasis but other cross-national perspectives are welcome. Applicants who approach these concerns from a theoretical and critical perspective are encouraged to apply. The standard teaching load is two courses per semester. This position will begin August 10, 2017. Required qualifications: Earned doctorate in political science or related field at the time of application or degree in hand by August 10, 2017. Successful applicants will demonstrate a strong interest in conducting research, teaching courses, and seeking grants and contracts in how the Internet of things affects concerns of human security/insecurity as they relate to governance of the public, private, and non-profit sectors as well the class, gender, locational, and racial dimensions of security in cyber-physical/human systems at any scale in U.S. national, subnational, and transnational contexts. Successful candidates will have documented effectiveness in both undergraduate and graduate teaching as well as program development in order to meet the Political Science department’s key needs in its B.A. and M.A. programs and those of doctoral students in cognate programs involved in the Integrated Security Destination Area. Potential for excellence in research and teaching is required. Much of this popular discussion focuses on the lived experience of rape culture, or the social codes and conventions that support or legitimate violence against women. This event will focus on the cultural construction of rape and sexual violence. It will explore the discursive construction of rape in legal settings, as well as interrogating the intersection between rape culture and the media. This will encompass a broad range of perspectives within feminist media and cultural studies: from the construction of rape in both social and legal contexts; to the representation of fictional violence in contemporary film and television; an interrogation of the journalistic practices in investigating and reporting on such crimes; and the crucial role of social media in the process of spreading rape myths, enacting violence as well as, in some cases, directly challenging gendered violence and dismantling pervasive cultural constructions. When we send messages, comment, upload photographs and make connections with others we are creating new kinds of networks. This creates vast amounts of data which hide valuable insights. This workshop will introduce a range of free tools which can help you to collect and analyse these data. It will also help you to tackle the even thornier issue of how to interpret these data as a sociologist. We will engage in hands-on workshop activities on data-driven digital methods and their research applications in relation to people’s lives.The aim is to introduce critical engagement with the digital tools as well as the application of these tools to research questions. The workshops will be conceptually grounded in the problems of public communication and privacy, digital media production and consumption, and the ethical issues associated with big/social data and digital methods in the context of digital media environments. Outline of the event Tools to be introduced will enable researchers to collect data from Smartphones; Twitter; Youtube; Facebook as well as visualise and export the data for publication without any programming skills required. Asking questions regarding every decision in these processes is a necessary component of thinking sociologically while archiving, visualising and interpreting the data being collected. Hi all, Pulse Lab Jakarta of the United Nations Global Pulse ( http://unglobalpulse.org/) a special innovation initiative and an applied research lab of the UN Secretary-General on Big Data and Data Revolution, is looking for few interns in 2017, working on Big Data and Data Science for Global Development and Humanitarian Action. An intern will be invited to apply various data skills including data analytics, data mining and data visualization, to a variety of Big Data (e.g., social media, transportation data, financial data, and mobile data) in tackling different sustainable development issues, such as food and agriculture, public health, economic well-being, urban resilience, urban sensing, natural disaster and climate change. The internship will be in Jakarta, Indonesia, specifically at the main district of the capital city, and a selected intern will be provided flights from/to the origin city as well as a minimum living allowance.
