Dear list members, I have a colleague whose graduate student is writing an MA thesis looking at hashtags and Muslim activism after the January 2015 attacks in Paris. Are there "essential" readings on hashtags and activism he needs to read? Is there anything of substance on hashtags and Muslim activism that also need to be consulted? Many thanks for any leads that I'll pass on. Ethics in studying reddit postings
by Glass, Grace 23 Feb '17

23 Feb '17

Hello all- I'm designing a study of the self-improvement discourse on reddit, and how it's mediated by gender. User Posts will be central to the study, but I wanted to get your thoughts on how to handle the ethical piece. Conventional informed consent would not be possible due to the anonymity of the usernames/platform. Thoughts? 4S 2017 CfP: STS, Critical Design, and the Critical Digital Humanities
by Malazita, James Wilson 23 Feb '17

23 Feb '17

Call for Papers: STS, Critical Design, and the Critical Digital Humanities Society for Social Studies of Science 2017, Boston, MA Deadline: March 1 Organized by: James Malazita (malazj(a)rpi.edu<mailto:malazj@rpi.edu>), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute This track aims to bring together scholars working at the intersections of Science and Technology Studies, politically-engaged Design and Making work (including Speculative and Critical Design & Making), and the Critical Digital Humanities, in order to share perspectives on the methods, challenges, and stakes of “doing” STS and the humanities in material and digital form. This track is envisioned as a critical complement to the “Making and Doing” event—while the Making and Doing event affords the ability for scholars to showcase their design work, this track affords space for critically reflecting upon the spaces, ideologies, mediations, and politics embedded within and enacted through the intersections of critical scholarship and materially-engaged design work. Possible paper topics include critical analyses of current and previous critically-engaged design and digital projects (including the presenter’s own); reflections on the institutional, infrastructural, and ideological constraints of doing alternative and materially-engaged scholarship; issues of the power and position of scholars designing and making in academic and non/tangentially-academic spaces; potentials and risks of doing interpretive and critical scholarship via technologically-mediated design work; and future directions for STS and humanities design. We are particularly interested in critical perspectives on design from feminist, postcolonial, and queer standpoints, and in design and DH projects, spaces, and methods that specifically address questions of power, oppression, access, ontology, and materiality. We also extend invitations to “making and doing” scholars engaged in related work in intersecting fields, including Media Studies, Literature & Science, and Design. Abstracts must be submitted through the conference system no later than March 1, 2017. Submission information can be found at http://www.4sonline.org/meeting, Panel #77. Please email James Malazita, the organizer of this panel session, at malazj(a)rpi.edu with questions. Please note that The Society for Social Studies of Science has final say over acceptances and panel organization.

Ethics in social media research
by Audun G. Løvlie 23 Feb '17

23 Feb '17

Dear all, I'm sending this email in relation to my work with SERISS (www.seriss.eu <http://seriss.eu>), a project aimed at strengthening and harmonising social science research across Europe. The work package my task is part of focuses on ethical and legal issues related to the use of social media data in social scientific research projects *Case studies that link social media data and survey data?* We are interested in cases to use as examples, particularly research projects where social media data has been linked to survey data, and if it exists also where social media data has been linked to administrative data. (Linkage of social media data with interview data is of less interest, as we have sufficient examples of this.) We aim to review ethical and legal issues and challenges that exist, that have been experienced and that may come up when formulating research questions and lines of inquiry, when dealing with social media data.* * Furthermore, if you have any experiences that you can share on the ethical and legal aspects of the use of social media data in social scientific research in general and in particular on linkage as mentioned above, any help would be greatly appreciated. In advance, thank you very much for any insight you may be able to provide. -- Vennlig hilsen | Best wishes Audun G. 4S 2017 CfP: Techno-jobs and Capital
by Norma Möllers 23 Feb '17

23 Feb '17

*** apologies for cross-posting*** *Call for papers: Annual meeting of the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S)* Boston, MA, USA, Aug 30-Sep 2 2017* * Submission deadline: March 1, 2017 through the conference system (https://convention2.allacademic.com/one/ssss/4s17/) Feel free to contact us if you consider submitting to our panel. *Panel 126. Techno-Jobs and Capital* Organizers: Winifred Poster, Washington University (wrposter(a)gmail.com) Norma Möllers, Queen’s University (norma.mollers(a)queensu.ca) STS has a long tradition of inquiring about techno-work and providing foundations for studies of locality, partiality, contingency, and agency. Less attention is paid to the connections of techno-jobs to the systems of political economy in which they are embedded. The goal of this track is to encourage explicit discussion of the ways these new jobs are shaped by and sustain capital, and how they relate to broader shifts in the organization of labor and workers. We emphasize how this applies to both elite and subordinate types of techno-labor. It includes high-status jobs like the entrepreneurs and evangelists who market and distribute technical products for firms and nations, software coders who are bound by corporate non-compete contracts, techno-venture firms that are scrutinized for under-employing women, high-tech developers that rely on immigrant labor and the ‘body shopping’ practices of intermediary contracting firms, etc. It also includes a growing sector of middle and low status workers like the data janitors who clean up the internet, senior citizen ‘workampers’ who travel in their RV’s to labor at Amazon.com warehouses, manual workers who dispose of our phones and laptops, etc. We welcome papers that engage issues such as: transnational and post-colonial labor dynamics; techno-venture capitalists; R&D labor; crowdsourcing and micro-labor; outsourcing; sharing economies; creative, media, and game labor; automation; bot labor; algorithmic controls of labor; consumer labor; maintenance, repair, and care; labors of techno-waste and breakdown; racialized, gender, queer, and (dis)abled inequalities of technical labor; and digital strategies within the labor movement.

<http://jvwresearch.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=de4fa2a435382cb1fa67c…> CfP: Real Virtual Relationships View this email in your browser <http://us2.campaign-archive2.com/?u=de4fa2a435382cb1fa67cb708&id=884f87e5bf…> <http://jvwresearch.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=de4fa2a435382cb1fa67cb…> *CfP: Real Virtual Relationships* *A special issue of the Journal of Virtual Worlds Research to be published 2017 Q2* Guest Editors: Richard E. Ferdig (Kent State University, USA) Kristine E. Pytash (Kent State University, USA) Elyse Graham (SUNY Stony Brook, USA) Glenn W. Muschert (Miami University, USA) Motivation and Scope: We live in an era of digitally-mediated relationships. From finding a spouse online to daily interactions facilitated through social media, it is difficult for many people to imagine building and sustaining both platonic and romantic relationships without technology. Virtual worlds are no strangers to these interactions. Virtual world inhabitants will often initially use the space to develop alternative self-portraits (e.g. Black, Ferdig, DiPietro, Liu, & Whalen, 2009 <http://jvwresearch.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=de4fa2a435382cb1fa67cb…>). They then create and maintain relationships with those avatars and other human players out-of-world, with other human players in-world, and with non-player-characters in-world (Ferdig & Pytash, 2012 <http://jvwresearch.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=de4fa2a435382cb1fa67cb…>). This can lead to even more complex relationships as they balance their lives and relationships in-world and out-of-world. This special issue of Journal of Virtual Worlds Research is dedicated to an exploration of such topics in a collection of articles exploring “real virtual relationships” *to be published in Q2 (2017)*. The issue editors welcome empirical and theoretical research from all fields interested in this innovative area including, but not limited to: education, psychology, sociology, digital media studies, computer science, public health, game studies, literature, counseling, religion, family studies, and business. Suggested topics include but are not limited to: - Relationship building and maintenance in virtual worlds - Methods for studying digital relationships in virtual worlds - Economic impact of virtual relationships - Psychological impact of real-life events in virtual worlds (e.g. birth, marriage, death) - Education and training through relationships in virtual worlds - Virtual mentoring and collaboration - Technological aspects that impact relationship creation, sustenance, and termination - Love, hate, and other emotional responses to human and NPCs in virtual worlds - Political ramifications of heterogeneity or homogeneity in virtual worlds - Empirical case studies of player/user relationships - The impact of innovative technologies (e.g. AR/VR) on relationships in virtual worlds - Health and trust within medical virtual spaces - Analysis of literature featuring characters and their relationships in virtual spaces Authors are requested to submit an *abstract *of their proposed paper by* March 15, 2017*. Abstracts should be no longer than 500 words (references are not included in this word count). We welcome papers from a variety of disciplines and methodologies, and encourage graduate students to submit their research to this special issue. The guest editors are happy to discuss proposals for contributions, please contact Rick Ferdig at rferdig AT gmail.com for questions prior to submission. Submission Instructions: Interested authors should submit a 500 word abstract *via email to rferdig AT gmail.com <http://gmail.com>*. After review by the issue editors, authors will be invited to submit original scholarly papers of 4000-8000 words (including footnotes, references, and appendices) via the JVWR publishing system (see www.jvwreserach.org > About JVWR > For Authors <http://jvwresearch.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=de4fa2a435382cb1fa67cb…>). Shorter manuscripts are preferred. Longer ones are optional and should be discussed with the issue editors. Accepted papers will be published online in Volume 10, Number 2 (2017) of the Journal. Deadlines and Timeline: - Authors submit abstracts: *March 15, 2017* (via email to rferdig @ gmail.com) - Comments on abstracts: *March 31, 2017* - Authors of invited papers submit full papers: *June 1, 2017* (via JVWR system) - Editors return review report and initial decisions: *July 1, 2017* - Authors of accepted papers final versions: *July 15, 2017* - Publication: *August, 2017* Review Process: Abstracts will be considered by the guest editors. Full papers will be reviewed by expert referees using the *JVWR double-open policy*. Double-open policy means that in general, authors do not need to anonymize their papers, and reviewers' identity is also known to authors. For more details about it see JVWR site --> About JVWR --> For Authors --> Our double-Open Policy. Peace on Facebook, 2009
by Nicholas John 23 Feb '17

23 Feb '17

Hi everyone, "In 2009 Stanford Persuasive Technology Lab partnered with Facebook, IMVU and other technology companies to launch Peace Dot, the first technology based initiative to measure peace on the internet.” (Link <https://peaceinnovation.stanford.edu/projects/peacedot/peace-facebook-com-c…>) They produced a page, peace.facebook.com <http://peace.facebook.com/>, which showed the number of Facebook ties made across the lines of national and religious conflicts, and showed the results of an ongoing survey into Facebook users’ belief in the chances of world peace. This lives on as www.facebook.com/peace. Does anyone here know anything about this project? Did anyone here write about it back in the day? Is anyone here from Facebook and would like to talk to me about this page? (Please?!)
