Those in attendance will also learn how to deal with social media news consumers who often operate without a complete informational picture. Find out how to be both a critical consumer of the news and an active participant in societal debates in this innovative workshop. *Key Speakers* *Josh Nathan* graduated from Northwestern University, Magna cum Laude, in Journalism before spending 10 years working on-air as a television reporter and a National Weather Association certified meteorologist. His final position in TV was with the NBC affiliate in Hawaii, where he was also finishing his graduate degree. A professor with The Art Institutes in Critical Thinking and Communication, he began teaching for the University of Colorado Denver last year. He serves as an Academic Critic for the Centre for Media and Celebrity Studies (CMCS) and is co-chair of its NYC 2017 conference. Quoted on a variety of subjects in international forums with several journal publications to his credit, Nathan wrote his first book about the ways in which news changes the collective memory of events, altering historical narratives. His second book, *Too Mad to Trust *(2015), was a departure aimed at curbing rising communicative disorders in children, and he is currently completing his PhD in Education and Human Resource Studies at Colorado State University. *William Huddy* earned his Ph.D. in Communication Studies from the University of Denver (2012). Prior to academia, Huddy worked as a journalist and anchored television newscasts in Colorado Springs, Colorado, El Paso, Texas, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Fort Myers, Florida. He’s a Past-President (2007) of the Rocky Mountain Communication Association, and an active member of the National Communication Association since 2001. He teaches Political and Campaign Communication, Communication Research and Theory Building, Interpersonal Communication and Public Speaking at Metropolitan State University of Denver (since 2013), with a research focus on student engagement and communication activism. The Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), founded in 1950, is one of the most important public academic institutions for higher education and research in Brasil. The current bankruptcy of the State of Rio de Janeiro is now threatening the university with closure. In 2016 the UERJ obtained less than two thirds of its usual budget, and is now unable to pay staff wages and student grants or to ensure minimal maintenance on campus. The start of the next term has been postponed indefinitely. We the undersigned, academics and researchers from all over the world, wish to express our deepest concern for the future of the UERJ, show solidarity for all the students and staff and draw the attention of Brazilian authorities to the scientific, social and cultural disaster that would result from the destruction or weakening of the UERJ. FYI: HR 482 and SB 103 - attack on geospatial information, antiracism work, and affordable housing

Please help us get the word out and encourage AoIR, @theAAG (American Association of Geographers), and other disciplinary groups (AAA, ASA, ASA, MLA, AHA, et al) to take action. With you, Jack ** Dear Geographers, We are writing to bring your attention to the US HR 482 and SB 103, which are an attack on the collection, storage, and distribution of geospatial information, antiracism work, and affordable housing (see below). The text of the bill <https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/482/text?r=117>, “Local Zoning Decisions Protection Act of 2017,” will nullify HUD's 2015 “Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing” report to "have no force or effect," and does so by eliminating the data to support social change. In other words, the bill stands at odds with the pursuit of knowledge about human geography, including census data. The bill would prohibit a significant amount of the work we do on race, racism, and fair housing in the US, as well as GIS research more broadly, all of which thwart work towards social justice. A key section reads as follows: SEC. 3. PROHIBITION ON USE OF FEDERAL FUNDS. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, no Federal funds may be used to design, build, maintain, utilize, or provide access to a Federal database of geospatial information on community racial disparities or disparities in access to affordable housing. We encourage feedback, wisdom, and action among our respective lists, AAG specialty groups, other collectives and collegial relationships, and the AAG leadership. We ask you to share word about this bill with colleagues in other disciplines and on social media, using the hashtags #datarefuge and #datarescue when doing so to connect this issue to larger issues of public data and public data collection erasure, obfuscation, and elimination. We also encourage US citizens to reach out to your congressional representatives or to organize from afar in solidarity to stop this bill. Full links to the Senate and House bills are below. - apologies for cross-posting – Gendered violence online: a scholarly ‘slam’ Dear colleagues This is a call for expressions of interest for participants for an experimental, workshop-based symposium on gendered cyberhate to be held on Friday July 7, 2017, in Sydney, Australia. The event will be staged in an off-campus (and also an off-beat) setting and will be hands-on rather than presentation-based. It aims to bring academics, policy makers, police, platform managers, gendered cyberhate targets, and other stakeholders together in working groups to formulate potential responses to the problem of misogyny online. The event has three key aims: 1) to steer the conversation about gendered cyberhate away from identifying problems and critiquing existing structures, and towards modes of intervention; 2) to avoid potentially unhelpful ‘knowledge silos’ by facilitating interdisciplinary dialogue, as well as discussion between scholars and non-scholars; and 3) to formulate – and disseminate – potential solutions to misogyny online which are novel and innovative, yet also informed and feasible. Problematic practices include mob pile-ons, cyberstalking, and revenge porn (that is, the uploading of sexually explicit material – usually of a former female partner – without the consent of the pictured subject). While the problem of gendered cyberhate has received a high level of international media coverage, arguably little progress has been made in terms of identifying and implementing workable solutions. Indeed, police, policy makers, and platform operators have received harsh criticism for failing to adequately support the female targets of cyberviolence. The aim of this symposium is to move beyond critique and to stimulate discussion about potential interventions. This event will bring together a diverse range of scholars and stakeholders with the aim of stimulating conversation between people who might not otherwise spend a day chatting with each other. The format is experimental, and is designed to be challenging for participants. The rationale is that it is easy for us to occupy professional and personal echo chambers in which we find ourselves talking mostly to people with whom we share views, and paradigmatic ways of looking at and making sense of the world (that is, within various online and offline versions of ‘filter bubbles'). While participants in this event may find themselves outside their academic/professional comfort zones, we will have the symposium equivalent of safe words! ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI), with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design or the arts. Our focus is to improve the interaction between humans and machines, by leveraging both more traditional HCI approaches, as well as solutions that involve state-of-the art AI techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. ACM IUI welcomes contribution from any relevant arena: academia, business, or non-profit organizations. The conference brings together people from academia, industry and non-profit organizations and gives its participants the opportunity to present and see cutting-edge IUI work in a focused and interactive setting. A user's understanding of the information need and the overall task develops as he or she interacts with the system. Supporting the various stages of this task involves many aspects of the system, e.g. interface features, presentation of information, retrieving and ranking. Which measures should be taken into account? ------ Format ------ This is a workshop proper where discussion is central, and all attendees are active participants. We will start the workshop with a full round of introductions of all participants, making everyone feel welcome and part of the workshop. Then, the workshop continues with two short keynotes by keynote from academia to be confirmed and keynote from industry to be confirmed to set the stage and ensure all attendees are on the same page. Next, we will have presentations of contributed papers, with each paper getting a 1-minute boaster and a poster presentation in an interactive poster session. There will be 3-4 breakout groups seeded from the open research questions (see Goals) and the contributed papers, each group thoroughly prepared by a chair who guides the discussion, with examples from relevant IR evaluation campaigns such as the TREC Session and Tasks Tracks and the SBS Interactive and Suggestion Tracks, and from concrete examples of complex support systems with their UX and UI challenges. The breakout groups will report to the audience and a panel of experts, with continued discussion on what we learned, concrete plans for the next year, and a roadmap for the longer term. The discussion will continue during a social event, where the discussion will continue in a more informal way over food and drinks, deep into the Oslo night. The organizers have gained a proud reputation for their open and inclusive workshops, leading to new research collaborations, other workshops, and new evaluation tracks. The results will be disseminated in various ways: * A high quality, peer reviewed workshop proceedings, published in the CEUR workshop proceedings series (http://ceur-ws.org/) * A report on the results of the workshop in the ACM SIGIR Forum of June 2017. * Depending on the outcome, we will consider a special issue in an appropriate journal. * Last, but not least, the results can be fed into the running tracks at TREC, CLEF, and other evaluation campaigns. -------- Audience -------- The workshop will bring together a varied group of researchers—bridging CHI and IR in a natural way—with experience covering both user- and system-centered approaches, to work together on the problem and potential solutions, and identify the barriers to success and work on ways of addressing them. Authors can submit both research and position papers. Papers can be 2+1 pages max., with 2 pages of narrative text and an additional page for tables/figures/notes/references. I am part of the organization team together with Prof. Gabriele Balbi and my colleague Paolo Bory from Univeristà della Svizzera italiana (USI). We hope you will join the event (free of charge) and to see in Lugano next December International Conference - Computer Networks Histories: Local, National and Transnational Perspectives 14-15 December 2017 Lugano, Switzerland Aims and scope Recently several works in the fields of Internet Studies, Science and Technology Studies, and Media Studies have stressed the importance of early local, national and transnational computer networks histories for a deeper understanding of technological and social change in contemporary societies. This two-day conference has a triple aim. First, gathering scholars and researchers from a variety of disciplines working on theoretical and empirical analysis of computer network histories. Second, providing a wide perspective on these histories, including case studies from Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Oceania as well as international organizations dealing with the control and management of networks: this interdisciplinary and international debate could be useful to compare worldwide experiences and to provide new frames on this topic. Third, the conference aims to develop new frameworks and a space of discussion on the historical role of computer networks, representing the starting point of an international community of scholars. Potential topics may include, but are in no way limited to, the following: - The origins and development of computer networks under a local, national, international, or transnational perspective; - Political, economic, and cultural representations of computer networks in Western and Eastern cultures; - Comparative analysis of early and late networks; - Physical infrastructures and materiality of computer networks; - The political economy of national digital infrastructures; - Histories of the digitalization of analogic networks; - The history of failed and forgotten computer networks projects; - The influence of early computer networks on the development of the Internet and of the World Wide Web; - The cultural and social history of computer networks communities (e.g. communitarian networks, academic networks, professional networks, civic networks). All the authors are invited to send an abstract of a max 500 words and a short bio by February 28, 2017 to nethistories(a)gmail.com. All invited speakers interested in publish their papers in the journal revue Histoire et Informatique will be asked to send a paper of max 5000 words by October 31, 2017. Conference venue The two-day conference will take place in Lugano, Switzerland, hosted by the Faculty of Communication Sciences of USI - Università della Svizzera italiana. The organizing committee comes from a collaboration between the Institute of Media and Journalism (IMeG) of USI and the Association Histoire & Informatique Suisse of Bern.
