20 Feb '17

Dear AoIR Members This may be of interest to some of you or your advisees/students. If you have questions about the event, please email Dr. Rahul Mitra, rahul.mitra(a)wayne.edu. Best regards Dr. Eckert CFP Wayne State University 2017 Summer Doctoral Student Seminar, June 5-7 Deadline: March 1, 2017 Paid travel, lodging and meals for accepted participants We invite applicants for the 2017 Summer Doctoral Seminar, to be held June 5-7, 2017, at Wayne State University. The seminar will accept 12-15 doctoral students from around the country/world, with travel, boarding and lodging expenses paid for. Over 3-4 days, doctoral students will work with guest scholar Patrice M Buzzanell of Purdue University, to hone their research agendas. The theme of the 2017 seminar is "Constructing Resilience in Career." Applications are due to Dr. Rahul Mitra, at rahul.mitra(a)wayne.edu by March 1, 2017. You should send: 1) a copy of your latest CV 2) a letter of support from your academic adviser 3) a 500 word statement of how attending this seminar fits with your research goals. BIO: Patrice M. Buzzanell is a Distinguished Professor of Communication in the Brian Lamb School of Communication and in the School of Engineering Education by courtesy at Purdue University. She serves as the Chair and Director of the Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Leadership Excellence. Her scholarly interests center on career, praxis, and resilience. Editor or co-editor of four books: Case Studies in Organizational and Managerial Communication: Stretching Boundaries (in press), Distinctive Qualities in Communication (2010), Gender in Applied Communication Contexts (2004), and Rethinking Organizational and Managerial Communication from Feminist Perspectives (2000), she has authored more than 175 articles and chapters plus encyclopedia entries and numerous proceedings in engineering education and other disciplines. She currently serves on 16 editorial boards and has edited Management Communication Quarterly and other journals as associate or special issues editor. Fellow of the International Communication Association (ICA), she has served as ICA President as well as President of the Council of Communication Associations (CCA) and the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language and Gender (OSCLG). Most recently, she has been awarded the B. Aubrey Fisher Mentorship Award from ICA and Distinguished Scholar from the National Communication Association. Her NSF funded projects involve construct development and validation of engineering ethics scales, the everyday constitution of ethics in engineering design teams, and design thinking to engage in diversity and inclusion, socio-technical intersections, and formation of engineering professionals. Cultivating Resilience in Career The ways in which individuals and communities communicatively constitute resilience has garnered increasing attention from scholars and practitioners seeking to help themselves and others construct a “new normal” after disaster and loss. No longer reserved for major events and trauma, resilience has come to be understood as an ongoing process cultivated by and with others for difficulties on different levels. In this seminar we examine how communication offers a distinctive vantage point for understanding resilience. In organizing resilience in career, we consider both reintegration and transformation—in work-life, professional/occupational challenges, risk, safety, resilience labor, difference, policy, and network ties. Through resilience, we can design communicative spaces, processes, and possibilities for more socially just and sustainable systems of career, work, and personal life. Virtual communities spanning multiple online platforms
by David Brake 20 Feb '17

20 Feb '17

Dear all, I have a grad student who wants to look into this really interesting question in a literature review essay (see below) - I don't know what literatures to suggest to her however - the texts I am familiar with about virtual community all tend to look at them on a single platform. Are there multi-sited ethnographies and other studies examining this you can suggest? > I would like to look at how presence on multiple platforms (eg, Facebook, Twitter, Web, Blog, etc) either strengthens or dilutes a community. This springs off of the discussion you and I had last week about how the platform shapes the community (or not to beat the dead McLuhan horse - how the media shapes the message). I'm curious to examine how the community changes as the platform changes - eg, is it the same community spread across multiple platforms or does each platform represent a distinct community. It's my fault for irresponsibly finding the subject interesting ;-) -- Dr David Brake, Researcher and Educator http://davidbrake.org/, @drbrake Author of "Sharing Our Lives Online: Risks and Exposure in Social Media” https://www.facebook.com/sharingourlivesonline <https://www.facebook.com/sharingourlivesonline>

Decommissioning Online Infrastructures
by Joshua Braun 20 Feb '17

20 Feb '17

Hi All, I'm looking for literature suggestions. I'm currently starting work on a research project looking at Twitter's dismantling of the Vine video service. In line with the observation made in excellent essays like Steven Jackson's "Rethinking Repair" [1] and Marisa Cohn's "Engineering Obsolesence" [2], there seems to be a lot of research in both media studies and STS on how new technologies, products, and services get created, but not nearly so much on how older ones get dismantled, decommissioned, or enter into maintainership. I would welcome your recommendations of literature that touches on these areas. I'm interested in the topic broadly, but papers on the decommissioning of software and digital infrastructures would be particularly helpful. Many Thanks, Josh P.S. Nathan Ensmenger's "When Good Software Goes Bad: The Unexpected Durability of Digital Technologies" [3] is another paper I'd recommend to other folks interested in this topic. AoIR Ethics Working Group 3.0 - introductions; invitation to self-nominations; request for candidate issues, resources
by Charles Ess 20 Feb '17

20 Feb '17

Dear AoIR-ists, As many of you know, as part of our annual conference last October in Berlin, AoIR has initiated a new ethics working group to develop an internet research ethics (IRE) guidelines 3.0. The co-chairs of the new working group are: Anja Bechmann (Aarhus University, Denmark), Charles Ess (Oslo University, Norway), and Michael Zimmer (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee). Our broad plan is to research and develop a draft set of documents for review and comment by the AoIR membership, both by email (i.e., postings to the list with request for response) and as part of the 2018 conference. Depending on the outcomes of that process, we hope to have a semi-final version of the IRE guidelines 3.0 ready for final comment, again by email and, if needed, during the 2019 conference. We hope to have the final version ready for presentation for vote and eventual approval either at the 2019 conference or soon thereafter. A primary impetus for the new guidelines is the critical mass of participants and presenters at the IRE panels this past October: for the first time in our history the majority of presenters and participants were from outside the United States. As well, as was argued by many of the panel presentations, an IRE 3.0 is called for as continued technological and research developments open up new research ethics questions that are only partially addressed in IRE 1.0 (2002) and 2.0 (2012), if at all. In addition, many of the more contemporary issues – especially as driven by “Big Data” developments and research interests – are shared across a range of academic and professional communities, such as computer scientists engaged in the development of “networked systems ethics” (Bendert Zevenbergen) and The Global Initiative for Ethical Considerations in the Design of Autonomous Systems (IEEE Standards Association - <https://standards.ieee.org/develop/project/7000.html> <https://standards.ieee.org/develop/project/7000.html>) At the same time, however, as with the 2.0 guidelines (2012), we anticipate that the 3.0 guidelines will thereby build and expand on both earlier guidelines as foundational documents and approaches in many ways. The WG 3.0 members are listed below: we are very grateful indeed that these colleagues have agreed to join us. As a more complete list of their CVs and research interests (available soon) makes clear, the WG is robustly international as well as radically interdisciplinary; it further includes colleagues outside the AoIR communities whose work will offer relevant insight and directions for an IRE 3.0. As well: we invite AoIR members who would be interested in joining the WG to send us your self-nominations to WG membership. We especially encourage these from scholars and researchers whose work and background will help represent the voices, perspectives, and traditions of areas currently underrepresented in the WG - namely, Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Participating in the WG entails a commitment of ca. 20-30 hours a year for the next 3 years or so. While we hope that many members of the WG 3.0 will be able to attend the annual AoIR conferences and participate in IRE-related events (roundtables, panels, fishbowls, open listening sessions, WG meetings, and, eventually, open meetings with the membership to review and refine suggested IRE 3.0 guidelines) - such attendance is not a requirement for WG membership. Finally, as with all things AoIR (smile), these are volunteer positions: we have no funds to offer to support conference attendance, etc. If you are interested in nominating yourself to the WG, please get in touch with us off-list; we'll send along a more complete position description and approximate schedule of our activities. Self-nomination requires no more than a brief summary of your academic background and research interests, coupled with a few lines about the specific ethical challenges and issues you would like to focus on as part of your contribution to the WG. Lastly, we will be very grateful for your suggestions for what you see as emerging ethical challenges in internet-facilitated research, their possible resolutions, and/or relevant resources. You are welcome to post your suggestions to the AoIR list and/or send them along to the co-chairs off-list. Posting suggestions to the list may help spark other ideas and suggestions as well that we can take on board. Some of the immediate results of our work will be presented and open for discussion as part of the AoIR conference in Tartu this coming October. We very much look forward to gathering your thoughts and suggestions in that venue as well. Many thanks for reading this far and for giving this work your attention and consideration. Other work on multiplexity can be found in social network analysis studies of community — see research of mine suggesting media multiplexity as an attribute of strong ties, e.g., Haythornthwaite, C. (2002). Strong, weak and latent ties and the impact of new media. The Information Society, 18(5), 385-401. Haythornthwaite,Oxford Handbook of Internet Psychology (pp. 121-136). Other social network approach on community, see the work by Keith Hampton, Anabel Quan-Hasse, and the personal network studies by Wellman, and/or this reference: Rainie, Lee & Wellman, B. (2012). Someone else also suggested research on MOOCS, particularly relevant is connectivism by Stephen Downes, Dave Cormier and George Siemens, e.g. Siemens, George (2005). Internet history of publics and participation RE: #AoIR2017 Submissions Deadline Reminder
by Peter Timusk 20 Feb '17

20 Feb '17

Asking for help here... I am not working in a school nor studying in a school but I work in the research industry in government. The Internet is one topic amongst several I work on. While many of the immediate bosses at my job are doctors of philosophy I am not. Our work focuses on statistics but I read more widely than that and help each year with peer review for the AoIR conferences. I am wondering what theory beside political participation I can use here? I want to tell a story as an observer of the Internet acquisition ( making a web site, using a twitter handle etc., organizing a meeting or protest) of government ministries and radicals and local community groups and computer user groups. Just four or so time lines in Internet history. Stories of how our government started using twitter or how Drupal came to be used on all Canadian government web sites because of an accessibility challenge in our Supreme court. Or a short story of the local user groups in the open source world and their local meetings and connections with global open source projects like Drupal and Open Street Maps. I can imagine this fitting the conference by describing these as 'networked publics'. I also see that participation and democracy is still a distinguishing characteristic for some of the world and the Internet v say fake news, broadcast news, entertainment stars, one to many communication. We still hold out hope for Babylon. Would this be enough or deep enough for a paper at this conference do you think? Just some history stories with political participation the integrating theory? I imaging if I was hearing a paper or discussion like this I would be interested but is it academic enough? Call for AoIR Tartu panel participants on Algorithmic Agency
by Taina Bucher 20 Feb '17

20 Feb '17

AoIR colleagues, We are looking for a few additional people who might be interested in contributing to an AoIR panel exploring critical questions and issues surrounding algorithmic agency, power and publics. Researchers and media commentators alike are seemingly fascinated with the magic-like and opaque properties of algorithms. Algorithms are touted as responsible for, or implicated in, a range of diverse outcomes and opportunities – from the mundane to the transformative - for individuals, corporations and communities. Questions around how to critically frame and understand algorithmic agency in contemporary life and where and how to situate questions about power and accountability are raised. This panel is interested in addressing and reframing some of these issues, including the challenges in locating agency in the first place, the politics of making agential claims, and the possible social, political and ethical implications of algorithmic agency (however defined) within and towards publics. If you are interested in participating please send a 1200 word abstract following the AoIR template to Michele (m.willson(a)curtin.edu.au<mailto:m.willson@curtin.edu.au>) and Taina (wfg568(a)hum.ku.dk) by the 25th February outlining your specific contribution to a discussion of algorithmic agency, power and publics. Short queries about the suitability of topic can be sent to either one of us before that date. Those contributors whose topic fits the panel mix will be contacted by late 27th Feb. (given the impending deadlines, it is a tight turnaround). Depending on the range and mix of submissions, we may also explore a possible special issue publication. Please only submit should your attendance at the conference be a likely outcome. Apologies for this very short notice, we tried sending this message out a week ago but it somehow got stuck along the way. Thanks Michele & Taina --- Taina Bucher Associate Professor, PhD Dept. of Media, Cognition and Communication University of Copenhagen Karen Blixens Vej 4 2300 Copenhagen S Denmark
