Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award 2017
by Mark D. Johns 02 Mar '17

02 Mar '17

CALL FOR AWARD APPLICATIONS Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award 2017 Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research http://www.cccsir.com/ The Carl Couch Center issues an international call for student-authored papers to be considered for Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes both theoretical and empirical papers that apply symbolic interactionist approaches to internet studies. According to basic symbolic interactionist premises, what we understand as self, identity, relationship, and cultural formations are constructed dialogically and interactively. While the works of George H. Mead, Georg Simmel, Erving Goffman and other leading symbolic interactionists have been integral to the study of social interaction, Carl Couch was among the first from this tradition to suggest the importance of engaging in the study of mediated interaction. It is critical that symbolic interactionists move boldly forward, beyond Couch's initial suggestion, to study what has become for many a dominant form of communication in their everyday life. Whether we research identities, emotion, memory, family, work, career, presentations of self, deception, love, loss or other areas, the impact of mediated communication is felt by those interacting within it. As internet-related media continue to influence our everyday interactions--not only with other people but also with technologies, devices, algorithms, platform parameters, and so forth--it becomes crucial for symbolic interactionists to attend to the role of these mediating factors in the interaction process. We encourage any paper that uses a symbolic interactionist approach in internet studies. We also encourage papers that explore the interface between deliberate social interaction and structured (or automated) interactions sponsored or enacted by various technological features, exploring not only how identities, relations, and social formations are negotiated through social interactions, but also how these interactions are mediated further through the use or capacities of various technologies. Papers will be evaluated based on the quality of (1) mastery of symbolic interactionist approaches and concepts, (2) originality, (3) organization, (4) presentation, and (5) advancement of knowledge. Those contemplating entering should note that an interactionist approach demands thoughtful analysis, and not mere description, of social interactions. Evaluation will be administered by a Review Committee of: Dr. Mark D. Johns, Luther College, Decorah, Iowa Dr. Camille Johnson-Yale, Lake Forest College, Illinois Dr. Lois Scheidt, Indiana University, Bloomington Competition is open to graduate or undergraduate students of all disciplines. Works that are published or accepted for publication are not eligible for award consideration. Entries should be in English and not exceed 30 pages (approximately 7500 words) in length, including references and appendices. Limit of one entry per student per year. The top paper will receive Couch Award to be presented at the 2017 meeting of the Association of Internet Researchers (aoir.org) in Tartu, Estonia. The top paper will be awarded a certificate and a cash prize of $300 US and the author will be invited to present their work at a session of the AoIR conference, University of Tartu, October 18-21, 2017. Candidates should send a copy of their paper electronically, along with information concerning the location and level of their studies, to Mark Johns at mjohns(a)luther.edu Application deadline is May 15, 2017. Notification of award will be sent by June 15. Those with questions or comments about Couch Award application, please contact: Mark D. New book: The Datafied Society. Studying Culture through Data
by Mirko Tobias Schaefer 01 Mar '17

01 Mar '17

Dear colleagues, we are proud to announce that our book is now available (as embarrassingly expensive hard-cover AND as free download! See link below). A reasonably priced paperback will be out in August. Best wishes, mirko and Karin The Datafied Society. Studying Culture through Data Mirko Tobias Schäfer & Karin van Es (eds) From the back-cover The large corpus of empirical data and available tools for data collection and analysis are changing the ways knowledge is produced. For the humanities, this transformation requires not only that we must critically inquire into how technology affects our understanding of knowledge and how it alters our epistemic processes, but that we also need to employ the new data resources and technologies in new ways of scholarly investigation. The Datafied Society: Studying Culture Through Data thinks through the opportunities and pitfalls of doing research with data provides within the humanities (and media studies in particular). It covers different research methods, considers how researchers can engage with the datafied society, and reflects on moral and discrimination issues that need to be tackled when embarking on research. Through a series of four short interviews with leading scholars it furthermore pinpoints the key ideas in big data research. This book is a collection of scholarly investigations into computer-aided methods and practices. While several contributors offer essays representing their skills, methods and exemplary research projects, others reflect on the sensibilities and competencies that scholars need to develop in order to study contemporary culture through data. Together they make a volume that will stimulate and engage humanities scholars via their perspectives on debates and reflections on the theory and practices of digital data research./ / The book is published at Amsterdam University Press / Chicago University Press. This book is an important contribution to meet the challenges of the platform-driven, data-fueled world in which we have all come to live." <http://www.uva.nl/over-de-uva/organisatie/medewerkers/content/d/i/j.f.t.m.v…>José van Dijck <https://www.knaw.nl/nl/leden/leden/7836>, President of the Netherlands Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences, author of /The Culture of Connectivity/ ------------------------------------------------------- "We all know - or should know by now - how extensively corporations surveil our actions and analyze the data we leave behind. But we mustn't let our horror at the misuse of data dissuade us from considering how big data can aid us in our quest as scholars and changemakers to understand society, and to establish best and ethical practices in those pursuits. This is the first comprehensive look at the possibilities for a humanist approach to big data. Studying Culture through Data/ provides an abundance of methodological tools and reflection. New Report: Protecting Sources and Whistleblowers in a Digital Age
by Aljosha Karim Schapals 01 Mar '17

Information Law and Policy Centre launches new report: Protecting Sources and Whistleblowers in a Digital Age The emergence of an everyday digital culture and the increasing use of legal instruments by state actors to collect and access communications data has led to growing concern about the protection of journalistic sources and whistleblowers. With the support of Guardian News and Media, the Information Law and Policy Centre has published a new report to consider these developments entitled 'Protecting Sources and Whistleblowers in a Digital Age'. The report is open access and available for download<http://infolawcentre.blogs.sas.ac.uk/files/2017/02/Sources-Report_webversio…>. Authored by Dr Judith Townend and Dr Richard Danbury, the report analyses how technological advances expose journalists and their sources to interference by state actors, corporate entities or individuals. The report also looks at how journalists can reduce threats to whistleblowing; examines the rights and responsibilities of journalists, whistleblowers and lawmakers; and makes a number of positive recommendations for policymakers, journalists, NGOs and researchers. The report's findings are based on discussions with 25 investigative journalists, representatives from relevant NGOs and media organisations, media lawyers and specialist researchers in September 2016. Protecting Sources and Whistleblowers in a Digital Age was officially launched on 22 February 2017 at the House of Lords. * Download the report here<http://infolawcentre.blogs.sas.ac.uk/files/2017/02/Sources-Report_webversio…> * Download the update here<http://infolawcentre.blogs.sas.ac.uk/files/2017/02/Update-Protecting-Source…> * Press coverage of the report here<http://infolawcentre.blogs.sas.ac.uk/press-coverage-of-protecting-sources-a…> Alongside the report, the Information Policy Law and Policy Centre has also published a range of open access resources on journalistic sources and whistleblowing which are available here<http://infolawcentre.blogs.sas.ac.uk/source-protection-report-2017/>. New Book Announcement
by DAL JIN 28 Feb '17

28 Feb '17

Please share with other AOIR members: Smartland Korea: Mobile Communication, Culture and Society. By Dal Yong Jin, Simon Fraser University University of Michigan Press. https://www.press.umich.edu/9332315/smartland_korea The dramatic advancement of cellphone technology has fundamentally changed our daily lives. Smartphones and their applications have created new capital for information and communication technology corporations and changed the way people communicate. Smartland Korea, as the first attempt to comprehensively analyze mobile communication in the context of Korean smartphones, looks into a largely neglected focus of inquiry, a localized mobile landscape, with particular reference to young Koreans’ engagement with their devices and applications. It focuses not only on the celebratory achievement of technological advancement, but also the significance of social milieu in the development of the smartphones. It situates the emergence of smartphones within the growth of mobile technologies and overall telecommunications industries embedded in Korea’s information and communication technologies. The book examines the technology’s innovation and the evolution, the digital economy through the lens of political economy, and the youth culture embedded in the Korean smartphone context. Dal Yong Jin is Associate Professor in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University, Canada (djin(a)sfu.ca)

four visualizations (and open data) from data mining online news at massive scale
by kalev leetaru 28 Feb '17

28 Feb '17

Apologies for cross-posting - I thought many of you would find of interest four of my latest pieces on what we can learn about the global structure of the news media landscape through massive mining of online news, and given that the underlying datasets are all open, that these might offer great starting points for many other research questions. In particular, two of the analyses rely on applying deep learning image cataloging to more than a quarter billion global news photographs from last year, one examining visual geocoding and the other looking at semantic visual clustering using the assigned labels. One explores what it looks like to combine multilingual textual geocoding and sentiment analysis (both covering 65 languages) to process a quarter billion news articles and 2.2 billion location mentions to map "global happiness" as seen through the eyes of the world's online news media. The final leverages visual document extraction to compile three quarters of a billion outlinks from 121 million articles over the last 10 months and uses that link graph to explore how global media outlets link to each other. What makes this particular analysis distinct is both the global scope (crossing all countries and 65 languages) and the use of the article link graph rather than the page link graph as is traditionally done (ie looking at only the links in the article text itself, rather than the myriad links found in the rest of the surrounding page, such as headers/footers/advertisements/etc). Thought these might be of interest re what it looks like to apply these techniques at scale and with a globalized scope and the open availability of the underlying computed datasets to enable all kinds of other research on online news. http://www.forbes.com/sites/kalevleetaru/2017/02/27/creating-a-massive-netw… http://www.forbes.com/sites/kalevleetaru/2017/02/25/what-does-artificial-in… http://www.forbes.com/sites/kalevleetaru/2017/02/21/visual-geocoding-a-quar… http://www.forbes.com/sites/kalevleetaru/2017/02/22/mapping-global-happines… ~K http://kalevleetaru.com/ http://blog.gdeltproject.org/
