by Kevin G Crowston 07 Mar '17

07 Mar '17

CALL FOR PAPERS Transactions on Social Computing A New ACM Journal ________________________________ [http://www.acm.org/binaries/content/gallery/acm/membership/tsc_cover.jpg] INFORMATION FOR CONTRIBUTORS ACM Transactions on Social Computing (TSC) seeks to publish work that covers the full spectrum of social computing including theoretical, empirical, systems, and design research contributions. The editorial perspective is that social computing is fundamentally about computing systems and techniques in which users interact, directly or indirectly, with what they believe to be other users or other users’ contributions. TSC welcomes research employing a wide range of methods to advance the tools, techniques, understanding, and practice of social computing, including: theoretical, algorithmic, empirical, experimental, qualitative, quantitative, ethnographic, design, and engineering research. Social computing will continue to be shaped by foundational algorithmic, econometric, psychological, sociological, and social science research and these broad based perspectives will continue to have a profound influence on how social computing systems are designed, built and how they grow. TSC particularly solicits research that designs, implements or studies systems that mediate social interactions among users, or that develops or studies theory or techniques for application in those systems. Examples of such social computing systems include, but are not limited to: instant messaging, blogs, wikis, social networks, social tagging, social recommenders, collaborative editors and shared repositories. The scope of research covered within TSC includes: * Understanding motivations for contributing to and participating in social computing systems * Tools that help users understand the individual and collective roles of participants in social computing systems * The influence of scale; how differing scales of human and machine participation changes the designs and adoptions of systems * Micro-tasking systems and techniques for decomposing complex activities into recomposable tasks that can be completed by mixtures of people and machines * System architectures and infrastructure for developing social computing platforms * Foundational algorithmic analysis that accounts for human and machine data and runtime complexity * The roles of artificial agents in social computing spaces, the design, creation, and management of those agents relative to social interactions within a social computing system * Research on privacy mechanisms -- both formal and interactive -- related to social computing data and systems * Research on algorithms for personalization within a social computing context, including recommender systems and social matchmaking systems * Research on crowdsourcing, collaborative content creation, productive social gaming, citizen science and other mechanisms and applications of aggregating individual contributions for a collective goal * Research studying communications patterns in online communication forums * Ethnographic case studies of social computing in situ * Algorithms for extracting knowledge from social computing usage data and artifacts * Ethical and policy issues in social computing TSC continues ACM's commitment to high quality / high impact journals while seeking to create a bridge across the many disciplines that inform social computing. ACM Instructions to Authors can be found at www.acm.org/publications/submissions<http://orange.hosting.lsoft.com/trk/click?ref=znwrbbrs9_6-1110ex3e0d6x05688&> .

AoIR Conference Locations: 2018 and 2019
by Axel Bruns 07 Mar '17

07 Mar '17

Fellow AoIR members, We are delighted to be able to announce the locations for our annual conferences in 2018 and 2019. After two years in Europe, AoIR is returning to North America in 2018 with a conference at Le Centre Sheraton in Montreal, Canada. Easily accessible from Europe and the Americas, we are sure that many of you will be able to make the trip to this beautiful, multicultural destination. The conference will be held on 9-13 October 2018<outlook-data-detector://0>, and we will make further announcements about the conference theme, team, and other details when we preview the 2018 conference at AoIR 2017 in Tartu in October. Some preliminary information about AoIR 2018 is now online at https://aoir.org/conferences/aoir2018/. In the following year, we are once again leaving the northern hemisphere behind: AoIR 2019 will be held in Brisbane, Australia. The conference will take place on the Queensland University of Technology campus in downtown Brisbane, and is hosted by the QUT Digital Media Research Centre. One of Australia's most vibrant cities, Brisbane is connected by direct flights from North American and Asian hubs. The exact conference dates for 2019 are yet to be determined, but as always the conference will take place in late September / early October - springtime in Australia. Some early details about AoIR 2019 are here: https://aoir.org/conferences/aoir2019/. After two bumper years in Europe, with a very high volume of paper submissions for both Berlin and Tartu, we look forward to taking AoIR on the road again, and we hope you'll join us in Canada and Australia! CFP: Book Chapters on Conservative News
by A.J. Bauer 06 Mar '17

06 Mar '17

*CFP for Book Chapters**: News on the Right: Studying Conservative News Cultures* The recent surge of populist, nationalist, and authoritarian politics has brought to light an immense resistance against modern, professional journalism’s claims to truth and fairness. The trending notion of a “post-truth” age may not be a satisfying diagnosis of journalism’s predicament, but it signifies that a long battle has intensified over how news institutions discern truths and prioritize key facts and voices. While not alone, conservative news organizations have been at the front lines of that battle for decades, which begs the questions: How have conservatives approached the question of news and its veracity? Indeed, what is the ‘news’ on the right? The aim of this collection is to bring focus to conservative news and information as a crucial area for academic inquiry, especially for critical media studies and journalism studies. Despite several important works historicizing the growth of conservative news, there remains a relative dearth of scholarship on conservative news cultures and, even more importantly, a lack of continuity and exchange of ideas among the outposts where such scholarship is underway. To start bridging this disconnect, this book will bring together an interdisciplinary array of scholars to build upon key questions, enrich debates, and share knowledge about the currents of conservative media. Conservative news has become a tremendously powerful platform in the United States, wielding a vast influence on the terms of political discourse. Some of the major questions we pose for thinking about conservative news include: What principles and habits have these news cultures adapted for discerning truth and falsehood? For judging news selection and prioritization? How have the aesthetics of conservative news developed? How do conservative news producers and consumers see their purpose within a larger, more heterogeneous public sphere? What actors, historic circumstances, and affective dynamics have shaped conservative news norms? How have those norms differed across factions and moments? This collection will focus mostly on conservative news cultures centered in the United States, but we are also seeking contributors who can offer transnational and comparative perspectives. We are looking for contributors who will draw on cultural history, political economy, and cultural studies approaches to studying conservative news, the growth of its media infrastructure, its diverse publics, its normative propositions, and related topics. While we are seeking case studies among other approaches, we hope all contributors will connect their research to broad questions or lines of research relating to conservative news – i.e. we are looking for studies that clearly articulate significant claims beyond the analysis of a single text. We would like contributors to submit abstracts of no more than 500 words. We also ask that contributors be willing to share their drafts with each other, so that we may recommend contributors address each others’ ideas during revisions. For a preliminary draft of our proposal, see: https://tinyurl.com/jqcts9k Schedule: Abstracts due: April 30,th 2017 Decisions on proposals: May 30th Proposal to presses: June 1st Chapter drafts: November 1st Revisions: February 1st, 2018 Please send abstracts or questions to: rightnewscfp(a)gmail.com We seek contributions centering on the following themes: - The mythology of the liberal media - The affective registers and/or aesthetics of conservative media - Journalistic sensibilities of conservative news producers - Journalistic sensibilities of conservative news audiences - Conservative news and movement infrastructure - Methodological questions and dilemmas for scholarship on right wing news cultures - Right wing news and media technologies *Editors * Anthony M. Nadler is an Assistant Professor of Media and Communication Studies at Ursinus College. Before we can address the digital divide, we must first understand the nature of life in the digital age, the many challenges and opportunities it presents, and the interplay of influence between technological and social change. Then, in turn, we can fully understand digital inequality; its place alongside other long-standing, persistent issues of social equity, social justice, and media justice; and what it means to be disconnected from the most important technological advancement in communication in a generation and the myriad possibilities it facilitates. Thus, PPDD 2017 invites work that informs issues related to information and communication technologies (ICTs) and the digital divide broadly defined, including but not limited to: - gaps in access and connectivity - digital inclusion - digital exclusion - digital (dis)engagement - challenges and opportunities - social and cultural aspects of the divide - the skills and digital/information literacy needed to interpret, understand, and navigate information presented online and the requisite curriculum - effective use by individuals and communities - the impact of socioeconomic factors on user behavior - the role of motivation, attitudes, and interests - differences in patterns of usage - characteristics and conceptualizations of non-users - the ways in which people use the Internet to create content - content creation and inequality - different forms of capital and power relationships, including in terms of content creation, labor, and ownership - the role of theory in understanding ICTs and digital inequality - the impact of new and evolving technologies - the mobile divide - the interplay of influence with mobile technologies - human-computer interaction, human factors, and usability - social media - digital games - apps - socioeconomic and cultural effects - social equity, social and economic justice, and democracy - media justice and ICTs - the ethics of digital inequality - community informatics - social informatics - urban and regional planning - social planning - international development - indigenous populations - children and childhood - education - ICTs and well-being - health - disability and accessibility - politics, digital government, digital citizenship, smart cities/citizens/government, civic engagement, adoption issues, and (in)equality - global citizenship - policy discourse - law and policy and its impacts, including information/telecommunications policy, net neutrality, open access, open source, copyright, Internet filtering software, and censorship - the digital security divide - the digital privacy divide - big data and inequality - organizations and ICTs - public access initiatives - anchor institutions - practitioner-oriented topics considering aspects of design, management, implementation, assessment, collaboration, challenges, problem solution, and opportunities - architectural challenges and deployment experiences - Internet access cost analyses - the application of research to communities, practice, and public and private sector initiatives 2) Deadline to Submit a Position Paper for the PPDD 2017 Conference E-Book: 17 April 2017 11:59 p.m. Hawaii Time All PPDD 2017 attendees may submit a position paper and all submissions that follow the guidelines provided at http://www.ppdd.org/conferences/ppdd2017/cfp/ will be included in the PPDD 2017 Conference E-Book. --------------------------------------------------------------- HOTEL AND OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES --------------------------------------------------------------- On the PPDD 2017 Hotel and Optional Activities page (http://www.ppdd.org/conferences/ppdd2017/hotelactivities/) you will find full details about the PPDD 2017 Conference hotel, optional 23 May 4-Hour Field Trip to our Local Digital Inclusion Program Hosts’ Sites Plus Early-Bird Group Dinner, optional 25 May Group Dinner at a Polynesian Restaurant Overlooking San Diego Bay, and sightseeing information about the San Diego area as well as helpful information if you are also attending the International Communication Association (ICA) Annual Conference.
