Queer Internet Studies 2 Symposium -- Registration Now Open
by Jack Jen Gieseking 02 Jan '17

02 Jan '17

We are announcing the second round of the Queer Internet Studies Symposium, which I am co-organizing with Jessa Lingel. It's a one-day event scheduled for February 17th at UPenn. Read more about QIS2 here: http://jgieseking.org/qis2/. The goal of the day’s conversation is to broaden our thinking about the internet: to think about intersections of technology and media, sexuality and queering, gender and feminism. The final schedule is still being determined, but we're hoping to have a mix of sharing research, making art and developing an interdisciplinary conversation of what Queer Internet Studies might mean for research, policy and activist agendas. Presenters and panelists include TL Cowan, Oliver Haimson, Adrienne Shaw, Carmen Rios, Mia Fischer, Mitali Thakor, Shaka McGlotten, and Katherine Sender, and all in attendance will be asked to take part in workshops and dialogues throughout the day. QIS2 will be held at the Institute for Contemporary Art on Penn’s campus. As mentioned above, attendance is small to mid-sized, around 50-60 people, coming from a range of fields and disciplines. If you have questions or need more info, don't hesitate to let one of us know. Registration is very much free and can be done via this Google form. <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScsc56bcoB8W1ipj-1Tri9ksWQiGPRrtf6…> We hope you can attend! And we wish you the best of luck in your workshop! PhD position available in Digital Culture in Norway
by Jill Walker Rettberg 31 Dec '16

31 Dec '16

My department at the University of Bergen in Norway has advertised PhD positions, and hopefully one will go to a candidate researching Digital Culture. Please let any promising students with recently completed MAs know about this opportunity! Deadline Jan 15. https://www.jobbnorge.no/en/available-jobs/job/131012/phd-positions-at-the-… This is a four year, fully paid position with an annual salary of NOK 435,100 (about USD 49,900) and all standard Norwegian rights to health care, parental leave and so on. 25% of your time would be spent on teaching and the rest on your research. To apply you have to have a clear idea of your dissertation topic, and must submit a project description (12000 characters (including spaces) - this is about 5 pages). You also need to have an agreement with a supervisor in the department. So if you are interested in this, send me an email - if your project idea is within an area I or one of my colleagues can supervise, we can give you feedback on a project description draft before you submit it. I would be particularly interested in supervising a candidate interested in humanities/cultural approaches to machine vision/algorithmic images, in self-representation in social media, or in narratives in social media. To apply for a PhD in Norway you have to have completed a two year, research-based MA degree with a research thesis equivalent to at least one semester’s full time work. Dear colleagues, We proudly present the newest issue 10 (2016) of online - Heidelberg Journal of Religions on the Internet (http://heiup.uni-heidelberg.de/journals/index.php/religions/) After tackling a nearly grotesque heap of technical mishaps, we have finally managed to compile our brand new edition of Online - Heidelberg Journal of Religions on the Internet. The article again cover a wide range of subjects and themes, starting with a case study of conflicts on Facebooks (Mona Abdel-Fadil), general considerations on researching religion in digital games (Frank G. Bosman), the importance of Web 2.0 for female jihadists (Claudia Carvalho), the use of Facebook in the context of a prophetic church in Botswana (Gabriel Faimau & Camden Behrens), a best-practice study of the augmented reality app "Aurasma" for religious education (Polykarpos Karamouzis & Michalis Keffalas), the use of religious terms on Wikipedia (Emad Mohamed), religious attitudes of travel bloggers (Tom van Nuenen & Suzanne van der Beek), religion as factor in age rating video games in Iran (Stefan Piasecki & Setareh Malekpour), Catholic online communication (Moisés Sbardelotto) and Catholic confessional apps (Sasha A.Q. Scott). To all our readers: Enjoy! And have a Happy New Year 2017! by Frans Mäyrä 30 Dec '16

30 Dec '16

(Please help spread the word) Open until 13th January 2017: http://www.uta.fi/admissions/mdp-internet-and-game-studies: University of Tampere MDP in Internet and Game Studies This master programme provides an in-depth view to the fundamental character and development of games and Internet. Games have grown into an important form of culture and human interaction, expanding from entertainment to other areas of life. Internet and social media form an increasingly vital part of communication, social life and distribution of media and services. The programme is particularly targeted at the questions of analysis, design and application of online services and digital games from user- and culturally focused perspectives. The programme directs you to develop academic skills like critical thinking, scientific writing and carrying out research projects while encouraging active and comprehensive involvement with the practical processes and phenomena related to games and Internet. UTA has high profile research groups that are focused on Internet and game studies. There has also been a long history of education in hypermedia and in Information Studies and Interactive Media that forms the basis of this programme. This programme approaches the wide range of its subject matter from the interconnected perspectives of games, game players, game developers and game cultures. It will give you the academic skills needed to analyze, observe and understand the developments in this field of study while also encouraging a more pragmatic involvement and hands-on attitude with games and playful design. After completing the Master’s Degree Programme in Internet and Game Studies you will: • be able to identify, define and analyse interactive media in its different forms • understand and be capable of critically using the concepts and theories that relate to the fundamental character of games and internet • have in-depth understanding about the forms, contents, practices in games and internet as cultural, social, technical and commercial phenomena • be able to independently acquire scientific knowledge • be able to communicate the results from research, work in interdisciplinary teams and act as an expert in the field of interactive media. Graduates typically combine the skills and knowledge derived from this programme with previous studies and proficiencies that enable them to work as experts of games and Internet in various professional roles, in research, public sector as well as in industry. The need for knowledgeable workforce is growing in the fields related to games and interactive media, but the students should adopt an active attitude in fashioning their own specific area of expertise and professional profile. As a graduate you can take up multiple work roles that relate to the research and development of games as well as to the application of game play and game design for various purposes. Working as a university educated expert in this rapidly developing field of interactive media requires solid research and communication skills combined with an active and independent mindset, and willingness to explore and innovate new approaches to understanding and applying interactive media into practice. The possible jobs of graduates include researchers, developers, critics and specialists working with the interpretation, evaluation or implementation of games and social media. This master's degree provides the required background if you wish to pursue doctoral studies in interactive media, internet research or in game studies, for example in UTA’s Doctoral programme in Information Studies and Interactive Media. Call for Papers: ProWeb 2017
by Coen De Roover 30 Dec '16

30 Dec '16

ProWeb 2017: 1st International Workshop on Programming Technology for the Future Web http://2017.programming-conference.org/track/proweb-2017-papers Co-located with the <Programming> conference April 3, Brussels, Belgium ==================== Full-fledged web applications have become ubiquitous on desktop and mobile devices alike. Whereas “responsive” web applications already offered a more desktop-like experience, there is an increasing demand for “rich” web applications (RIAs) that offer collaborative and even off-line functionality —Google docs being the prototypical example. Long gone are the days that web servers merely had to answer incoming HTTP request with a block of static HTML. Today’s servers react to a continuous stream of events coming from JavaScript applications that have been pushed to clients. As a result, application logic and data is increasingly distributed. Traditional dichotomies such as “client vs. server” and “offline vs. online” are fading. ** Call for Papers ** The 1st International Workshop on Programming Technology for the Future Web, or ProWeb17, is a forum for researchers and practitioners to share and discuss new technology for programming these and future evolutions of the web. We welcome submissions introducing programming technology (i.e., frameworks, libraries, programming languages, program analyses and development tools) for implementing web applications and for maintaining their quality over time, as well as experience reports about the use of state-of-the-art programming technology. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to: * Quality on the new web: static and dynamic program analyses; code, design test and process metrics; development and migration tools; automated testing and test generation; contract systems, type systems, and web service API conformance checking; ... * Hosting languages on the web: new runtimes; transpilation or compilation to JavaScript, WebAssembly, asm.js, ... * Designing languages for the web: multi-tier (or tierless) programming; reactive programming; frameworks for multi-tier or reactive programming on the web; ... * Distributed data sharing, replication and consistency: cloud types, CRDTs, eventual consistency, offline storage, peer-to-peer communication, ... * Security on the web: client-side and server-side security policies; policy enforcement; proxies and membranes; vulnerability detection; dynamic patching, ... * Surveys and case studies using state-of-the-art web technology * Ideas on and experience reports about: how to reconcile the need for quality with the need for agility on the web; how to master and combine the myriad of tier-specific technologies required to develop a web application, .. * Position statements on what the future of the web should look like We solicit three kinds of submissions via EasyChair: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=proweb2017 - 6-page **technical papers** and **experience reports** that, when accepted, will be published in the workshop post-proceedings as part of of the ACM’s Digital Library. - 3-page **position statements** that, when accepted, will be published in the workshop post-proceedings as part of of the ACM’s Digital Library. - 1-page **presentation abstracts** that, when accepted, will be made available on the website. Submissions must follow the ACM SIGPLAN Conference Format (9 point font, Times New Roman font family, numeric citation style). Each submission will be reviewed by at least three members of the program committee. We welcome submissions that identify new problems, or report on promising ideas in early stages of research. Submissions of the third kind are ideal to further disseminate existing ideas within the community, to demonstrate existing tools, or simply to instigate a discussion. More information: http://2017.programming-conference.org/track/proweb-2017-papers ** Important dates (AoE) ** - Submission deadline: Wed 15 Feb 2017 - Author notification: Wed 1 Mar 2017 - Camera-ready version: Wed 15 Mar 2017 ** Organizers ** - Coen De Roover, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium - Anders Møller, Aarhus University, Denmark - Christophe Scholliers, Universiteit Gent, Belgium ** Program Committee (preliminary) ** - Vincent Balat, Université Paris Diderot, France - Nataliia Bielova, Inria, France - Avid Chaudhuri, Facebook, United States of America - Tobias Distiler, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany - Jan Martin Jansen, Netherlands Defence Academy, The Netherlands - Frank Piessens, iMinds, Belgium - Rinus Plasmeijer, Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands - Michael Pradel, TU Darmstadt, Germany - Andreas Rossberg, Google, Germany - Sukyoung Ruy, KAIST, South Korea - Manuel Serrano, Inria, France - Mario Südholt, Inria, France - Tom Van Cutsem, Nokia Bell Labs, Belgium - Eelco Visser, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands

Re: [Air-L] Elsevier and peer review

Thanks for raising this troubling episode. Like Zach says, this is no reason to impugn OA publishing, regardless of its many challenges (including the dominant author-pays model in the natural sciences and cynical OA opportunism of the Elsevier-buys-SSRN sort). I recently wrote about these issues in IJOC ("Open Media Scholarship: The Case for Open Access in Media Studies"): http://ijoc.org/index.php/ijoc/article/view/6154 In the wake of Elsevier's takeover of SSRN, if you're looking for a nonprofit OA preprint repository, the brand-new SocArxiv is superb (and built atop the Open Science Framework platform): https://osf.io/preprints/socarxiv Jeff --------- Jeff Pooley, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Media & Communication Muhlenberg College 2400 Chew St., Allentown, PA 18104 484-664-3677 jeffpooley.com Begin forwarded message: > From: air-l-request(a)listserv.aoir.org > Date: December 29, 2016 at 6:00:31 PM EST > To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org > Subject: Air-L Digest, Vol 149, Issue 43 > Reply-To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org > > Date: Thu, 29 Dec 2016 15:58:02 +0000 > From: Andrew Herman <aherman(a)wlu.ca> > To: Charlie McNabb <mcnabbarchives(a)gmail.com>, > "air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org" <Air-L(a)listserv.aoir.org> > Subject: Re: [Air-L] Elsevier and peer review > Message-ID: <1483027081383.69877(a)wlu.ca> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" > > Great suggestion, Charlie! > ________________________________________ > From: Air-L <air-l-bounces(a)listserv.aoir.org> on behalf of Charlie McNabb <mcnabbarchives(a)gmail.com> > Sent: Thursday, December 29, 2016 10:55 AM > To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org > Subject: Re: [Air-L] Elsevier and peer review > > May I also suggest, those of you in academic institutions, forward this > thread to your librarian. The journal invites researchers to submit their work to gamevironments (http://www.gamevironments.uni-bremen.de/) for possible publication in a special issue due for publication December 2017. Whether by console, PC, mobile phone, VR headset, or other interface, video games and modern Jewish expression are now often intertwined. Jews who grew up with video games over the last forty years and who are growing up today are literate in the mechanics, visuals, sound effects, music, tropes, trends, and storylines of these games. That literacy necessarily can frame and bend contemporary Jewish practices. Likewise, those immersed in Jewish cultural and religious expression read video games through sensibilities informed by their Jewish journeys. Educator-researchers now develop video games for the purposes of the acquisition of Jewish cultural practices, such as understanding Jewish history, literature, and ethical reasoning. Players explore religious and cultural through game interfaces. In an effort to collect new research and perspectives on these and related themes, gamevironments seeks paper proposals for an issue with focus on Jewish cultural practices, including religious expression. We wish to collect results as well as theoretical, analytical, methodological, and other social science and humanities approaches to Jewish expression and video games, in a broad sense. Papers may explore any aspect of the relationship between video games and Jewish cultural practices, including religious practices. For example, but not limited to: Video games as Jewish cultural expression or practice Video game practices intersecting with contemporary Jewish cultural and religious practices Jewish studies approaches to video games; video game approaches to Jewish studies Design principles based on data and scholarly theoretical frameworks known in the humanities and the social sciences Interreligious or interfaith studies of video games including Jewish cultural practices Analysis of video game culture through Jewish scholarly lenses Expressions of Jewish life in video games, regardless of genre Video game studies, critical and cultural analysis on Jewish topics Jewish cultural expression or history in the video game industries The use of Jewish sources for creating environments, styles, art, soundscapes, traditions, languages, lore, myths, religions or any sense of adaptation of Jewish sources Space, time, and/or place: the use in video games of Jewish conceptions of time, maps tied to Jewish history, and/or of Jewish locations The use of Jewish tropes, allusions, stereotypes, storylines, literary references, or narrative structures Approaches to creating speculative/fictional religious systems influenced by Judaism Issues of Jewish journeys, beliefs, ideas, ideologies, politics, ethics, morality, and agency in video games Video games as elements, adjusters, or renewers of a collective and narrative memory Video games as history, politics, including e.g. themes of historical traumatization, nationalism, anti-Semitism, emancipation, gender, totalitarianism, heritage, Jewish ethnic identities, Serious games, games for social impact, games for learning related to Jewish life. Studies related to any of the above-mentioned ideas, or other similar topics, are welcome as submission to this issue. Submission deadlines: Title and abstract submission (approx. 500 words plus Harvard style references to be included): 29.03.2017 Full text submission: 12.07.2017 Review results returned: 13.09.2017 Revised text submission: 8.11.2017 Online publication: 31.12.2017 Please consult the gamevironments submission style sheet before submitting your paper, http://www.gamevironments.uni-bremen.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/gv-style… , as well as the Help Desk http://www.gamevironments.uni-bremen.de/submission-guideline/ for some general principles. Note: All abstracts must include Harvard style references.
