CFP: Imagining Intersectional Futures (CSCW Workshop - Submissions due Jan 8)
by Anna Lauren Hoffmann 03 Jan '17

03 Jan '17

CFP: Imagining Intersectional Futures (CSCW Workshop) *Please feel free to forward!* CALL FOR PARTICIPATION Due: *January 8, 2017*. *Imagining Intersectional Futures: Feminist Approaches in CSCW* is a one day workshop to be held *Saturday, February 25* at the 2017 ACM Conference on Computer Supported Collaborative Work (CSCW 2017) in Portland, Oregon. We invite participants to join us for a one-day workshop to imagine intersectional futures in CSCW and beyond. The aim of this workshop is to explore theoretical and methodological approaches that help us consider issues of gender, sexual orientation, and power in the design of socio-technical systems. This workshop will build on two previous workshops on the topic of feminism and CSCW. With this instantiation, we are motivated by an explicit commitment to intersectionality—a recognition that the effects of various oppressions cannot be understood independently. Considerable time will be devoted to discussing work in post-colonial feminism, queer theory, Women of Color feminism, and feminist critical disability studies. Through generative conversation, feedback on works-in-progress, and the initiation of outlets for new feminist CSCW work, we aim to 1) build on existing research and practice and 2) identify concerns and approaches for both designing and assessing research oriented toward intersectional and feminist futures in the context of CSCW and social computing. During the workshop, participants will share their works in progress, join each other for a “walking seminar,” engage in zine making, and discuss future collaborations and research trajectories. If you are interested in joining us, please *submit a position paper* (2-4 pages in ACM Extended Abstract format <https://chi2017.acm.org/submission-formats.html>) and include an author biography with current research or potential goals of research. Papers will be selected via blind review based both on quality as well as breadth of perspective to ensure a broad conversation on gender. Accepted position papers will be circulated within the participant group prior to the workshop and—with permission—made available on the workshop website. Submissions and questions should be emailed to intersectionalfutures@gmail .com More information about the workshop can be found here: http://depts.washington.edu/tatlab/intersectionalfutures/ On behalf of… Sarah Fox, University of Washington Amanda Menking, University of Washington Stephanie Steinhardt, Cornell University Anna Lauren Hoffman, University of California, Berkeley Shaowen Bardzell, Indiana University Thanks! -Anna

ESA 2017 conference "(Un)Making Europe: Capitalism, Solidarities, Subjectivities": Abstract submission now open
by Christian Fuchs 03 Jan '17

03 Jan '17

Abstract submission now open "(Un)Making Europe: Capitalism, Solidarities, Subjectivities" 13th European Sociological Conference European Sociological Assocation Athens, Greece, 29 August to 1 September 2017 http://www.europeansociology.org./conferences/13th-conference-2017/ Abstract submission via https://www.conftool.pro/esa2017/ Abstract submission deadline: February 1, 2017 Invited speakers include David Harvey, Yanis Varoufakis, Donatella della Porta, Eva Illouz, Hartmut Rosa, Silvia Federici, Ruth Wodak, Gerard Delanty, Margaret Abraham, Maria Kousis, Markus Schulz, Michel Wieviorka, and others. The conference will feature keynote talks, invited semi-plenaries, sessions by ESA's 37 thematic networks, 17 research streams, midday specials, and a pre-conference PhD workshop. In addition, the ESA conference provides for the first time the opportunity for submission of abstracts to selected semi-plenary session topics. Such Semi-plenary topics now open for submission include for example the themes "(Un)Making Europe", "Un)Making Capitalism", "(Un)Making Solidarities", "(Un)Making Subjectivities", and other topics. Call details: http://www.europeansociology.org/download/esa2017_CFPs.pdf Please consult the details of the call and have a look at the guidelines before you start submission. In order to make use of the reduced conference fee, renew your ESA membership early or become a new ESA member now: New membership: http://www.europeansociology.org/member/ Renew membership: http://www.europeansociology.org/membership_renewal/ Conference theme "(Un)Making Europe: Capitalism, Solidarities, Subjectivities" Europe can be made or unmade, and this is especially true since the ‘Great Recession’ of 2008. European society, and even the very idea of Europe, is under threat. First, the inherent contradictions of capitalism are obviously stronger than we thought: Greece, where the emphatic idea of “Europe” originated, has experienced severe austerity measures; Europe has seen a deepening of neo-liberal politics, threats to what remains of the welfare state and increasing inequality. Second, solidarities are fragmented in and between societies across Europe. The new world economic crisis formed a context for both the constitution and the undermining of solidarities. On the one hand, from the Arab Uprisings to the various Occupy and Indignados movements and their manifestations at the level of political parties we have seen rebellions by citizens demanding political change. On the other hand, refugees fleeing wars have been denied human rights and their lives have been threatened by the closure of borders and the lack of a coordinated European strategy. Third, subjectivities are formed that do not only result in resistance and protest, but also in apathy, despair, depression, and anxiety. Authoritarianism, nationalism, racism, xenophobia, right-wing extremism, spirals of violence, and ideological fundamentalisms have proliferated throughout the world, including in Europe. As a result, the promise of Europe and the geographical, political, and social borders of Europe have been unmade and this ‘unmaking’ poses a profound challenge for sociology and the social sciences more generally. It is in this context that the European Sociological Association’s 2017 Conference takes place in Athens at the epicentre of the European crisis. The underlying question for the conference is: How and where to should a sociology that matters evolve? How can sociology’s analyses, theories and methods, across the whole spectrum of ESA’s 37 research networks and various countries, be advanced in order to explain and understand capitalism, solidarities and subjectivities in the processes of the making, unmaking and remaking of Europe? -- Christian Fuchs ESA 2017 Conference Committee Chair "(Un)Making Europe: Capitalism, Solidarities, Subjectivities" 13th ESA Conference Athens, 29 August - 1 September, 2017 www.europeansociology.org

Call for the ICA 2017 Pre-Conference ‘Data and the Future of Critical Social Research'
by Leif Kramp 03 Jan '17

03 Jan '17

Call for the ICA 2017 Pre-Conference ‘Data and the Future of Critical Social Research' Sponsored by the Philosophy, Theory and Critique Division of the International Communication Association Event date: 25 May 2017, 9:00 AM - 5 PM, San Diego, California, USA Deadline for proposals: January 15th, 2017 (500 words abstract) Organisers: Nick Couldry (London School of Economics) and Andreas Hepp (University of Bremen) What we call media and mediated communication is more and more interwoven with processes of datafication in an environment of continuous and largely automated data-gathering, for example, from our activities online or our mobile phone use. The uses of data collected, aggregated and analysed by systems of computers are today a precondition for everyday life. In short, data are changing social ontology, and as a result the role of 'media' within the constitution of the social. This can be understood as part of a process of 'deep' mediatization - in which the very elements and building-blocks from which social is constructed are based in processes of mediation, accompanied by automated data processing. In this transformed context, this pre-conference asks: What do such changes mean for critical communications and social research - indeed for critical social theory and informed political action generally? How should we now do critical empirical research into media and communications bearing this deep mediatization in mind? The pre-conference aims both to focus these questions theoretically and to encourage perspectives on what constitutes critical empirical research under such conditions. Questions on which we welcome either theoretical or empirical contributions include: - What sort of economic, political and social order is being built through today’s data relations and their underlying linked infrastructures? - How are the self's relations to institutional power changing through digital traces, data relations and with implications for autonomy and freedom? - How is the nature of social institutions changing through deep mediatization and the pervasiveness of data relations? - Are practices of civic and political intervention for social change on balance stimulated or undermined in a datafied environment? - What does community and other forms of collectivity come to mean under these new datafied conditions? - How should we develop our methods for a critical analysis of processes of deep mediatization? - What kind of social interventions are needed that build from critical analyses of datafication? Please email a 500 words proposals to Andreas Hepp (andreas.hepp(a)uni-bremen.de <mailto:andreas.hepp@uni-bremen.de>) by January 15th, 2017. Please direct any questions to: Nick Couldry (n.couldry(a)lse.ac.uk <mailto:n.couldry@lse.ac.uk>) or Andreas Hepp (andreas.hepp(a)uni-bremen.de <mailto:andreas.hepp@uni-bremen.de>).

CfP: 2nd Workshop on Supporting Complex Search Tasks (SCST 2017)
by Toine Bogers 03 Jan '17

03 Jan '17

=========================================================== SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS SCST 2017: 2nd Workshop on Supporting Complex Search Tasks (co-located with CHIIR 2017) http://humanities.uva.nl/~mkoolen1/SCST17/ Oslo, Norway March 11, 2017 =========================================================== ------------------------ Description & Objectives ------------------------ One of the current challenges in information access is supporting complex search tasks. A user's understanding of the information need and the overall task develops as he or she interacts with the system. Supporting the various stages of this task involves many aspects of the system, e.g. interface features, presentation of information, retrieving and ranking. The Supporting Complex Search Tasks workshop (SCST 2017) aims at creating and fostering an interdisciplinary forum where researchers can exchange ideas about alternative experiments and prototypes, and contribute to the development of a research agenda in supporting complex search tasks. ------------------ Topics of interest ------------------ We invite position papers addressing open research questions related to: * Context: What are the obvious use cases and applications of complex search? * Tasks: What are essential features of work tasks and search tasks to take into account? * Heterogeneous sources: With a multitude of information, varying from introductory to specialized, and from authoritative to speculative or opinionated, when to show what sources of information? * Search process: How does the information seeking process evolve and what are relevant differences between different stages? * UI/UX: What affordances are required and in what stage of the search process? How can we make the search process transparent to the user? How and when does the initiative shift between system and user? * Evaluation: How do we evaluate and compare approaches? Which measures should be taken into account? ------ Format ------ This is a workshop proper where discussion is central, and all attendees are active participants. We will start the workshop with a full round of introductions of all participants, making everyone feel welcome and part of the workshop. Then, the workshop continues with two short keynotes by keynote from academia to be confirmed and keynote from industry to be confirmed to set the stage and ensure all attendees are on the same page. Next, we will have presentations of contributed papers, with each paper getting a 1-minute boaster and a poster presentation in an interactive poster session. There will be 3-4 breakout groups seeded from the open research questions (see Goals) and the contributed papers, each group thoroughly prepared by a chair who guides the discussion, with examples from relevant IR evaluation campaigns such as the TREC Session and Tasks Tracks and the SBS Interactive and Suggestion Tracks, and from concrete examples of complex support systems with their UX and UI challenges. The breakout groups will report to the audience and a panel of experts, with continued discussion on what we learned, concrete plans for the next year, and a roadmap for the longer term. The discussion will continue during a social event, where the discussion will continue in a more informal way over food and drinks, deep into the Oslo night. The organizers have gained a proud reputation for their open and inclusive workshops, leading to new research collaborations, other workshops, and new evaluation tracks. The results will be disseminated in various ways: * A high quality, peer reviewed workshop proceedings, published in the CEUR workshop proceedings series (http://ceur-ws.org/) * A report on the results of the workshop in the ACM SIGIR Forum of June 2017. * Depending on the outcome, we will consider a special issue in an appropriate journal. * Last, but not least, the results can be fed into the running tracks at TREC, CLEF, and other evaluation campaigns. -------- Audience -------- The workshop will bring together a varied group of researchers—bridging CHI and IR in a natural way—with experience covering both user- and system-centered approaches, to work together on the problem and potential solutions, and identify the barriers to success and work on ways of addressing them. Authors can submit both research and position papers. Papers can be 2+1 pages max., with 2 pages of narrative text and an additional page for tables/figures/notes/references. Submitted papers will be peer-reviewed in a double-blind review process. --------------- Important dates --------------- * Paper submission deadline: February 1, 2017 * Notification of acceptance: February 20, 2017 * Camera-ready deadline: March 1, 2017 * SCST 2017 Workshop: March 11, 2017 ---------- Organizers ---------- * Nick Belkin (Rutgers University) * Toine Bogers (Aalborg University Copenhagen) * Diane Kelly (University of Tennessee) * Jaap Kamps (University of Amsterdam) * Marijn Koolen (Huygens ING) * Emine Yilmaz (University College London) For further questions, please contact a member of the organizing committee.

Call for proposals - SCANZ2017 CBR
by Tracey M Benson 03 Jan '17

03 Jan '17

Please share widely (apologies for cross-posting): SCANZ2017 CBR Call for Participation Ocean*Energy: From the Mountains to the Sea The overarching theme of Ocean*Energy seems at first a strange fit for the inland city of Canberra. But if you look at the geological history of the city, it occupies what was once an inland sea which opens up a conversation about deep time and change over time. Close to Canberra is also the source of the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers, which have provided hydro-electricity to the region through the Snowy River Hydro-Electric Scheme. The theme is deliberately open and provides for a diversity of readings on what ‘ocean’ and ‘energy’ can be. It can be a literal reading of energy in terms of electricity, renewables and solar or be ...defined as the effort, passion and focus of community to make positive environmental changes. It also allows for discreet discussions on place about islands, oceans, mountains and rivers. This will provide the opportunity to look at areas like the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers and connect with existing research and knowledge about Country that could be contributed by participants. The goal of the event is to encourage thought, ideas and discussion around environmental issues across disciplines as well as identify means of positive action at a larger community scale. Submissions We invite proposals from artists, scientists, knowledge keepers/custodians and technologists for residency projects, papers, transdisciplinary workshops, artistic activities, posters and panels that respond to the theme of Ocean*Energy: From the Mountains to the Sea. Ocean*Energy: From the Mountains to the Sea is a three part event including an artist residency, symposium and public art event. Dates: Residency: 27 May - 5 June Symposium: 3 - 4 June World Environment Day public art event: 5 June The event will mainly be located at the University of Canberra. All places in the residency are self-funded at the moment, but may be subsidised by project funding. Accommodation costs approx $320 for 8 days. Details: Residency proposal (max 8 pages +10 images) Papers (max 8 pages) Artistic activities and artefacts (proposal in 3 pages +10 images) Transdisciplinary workshops (proposal in 3 pages) Submit proposals to https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=scanz2017cbr Deadline: January 31 2016 (midnight, AEDT time) Notification of acceptance: March 1, 2017 Contact: scanz2017cbr(a)gmail.com Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/events/1949691225258496/ -- Dr Tracey M Benson Director/Owner || Bytetime Media Arts <http://www.bytetime.com> Professional Associate || Institute of Applied Ecology <http://appliedecology.edu.au/>, University of Canberra Founder || TransArts Alliance <https://transartsalliance.org/> Sessional Academic || Faculty of Art and Design, University of Canberra Online Strategy and Analysis || Information Exchange, Energy Division, Dept of Environment and Energy Board Member || Ethos Global Foundation || http://www.ethosglobal.com/ Treasurer/Secretary || Intercreate || www.intercreate.org ABN: 28 309 779 434 Forthcoming projects <http://traceybenson.com/2015/06/23/forthcoming-projects/> by Tracey M Benson
