We welcome contributions from the many disciplines and approaches that intersect with virtual worlds' research. Breaking Conventions *EVE Online (EVE)* -- the space-themed massively multiplayer game released in 2003 by CCP Games -- is a game with a reputation. Sometimes referred to as “Excel Online”, *EVE* has also become known as a game with a brutal learning cliff that is hostile to newcomers. And yet, it is also home to vibrant community of long term, dedicated players. In a number of important ways, *EVE* breaks from the conventions of the MMOG genre such as its single shard server, permanent death, robust in-game economy, and pervasive treachery. As a result, much of the research on other MMOGs is not necessarily applicable to this gameworld. Motivation and Scope For much of* EVE*’s history it has received little academic attention. Recent publications, including* Internet Spaceships Are Serious Business* (University of Minnesota Press, 2016), have only just begun to scratch the surface of EVE. This special issue of *Journal of Virtual Worlds Research* will serve as a collection of recent investigations into this MMOG and its community of players. Researchers currently working on EVE-related projects are invited to contribute to this special issue, to be published in Q4 2017. *Suggested topics include but are not limited to:* - The EVE metagame(s) - The history of EVE and/or CCP Games - EVE Online player communities - EVE’s avatar creation tools - Conflict and collaboration - “Fun” or “play” in EVE - EVE’s economy and/or its black/grey markets - Methods for studying EVE - Lessons from EVE Authors are requested to submit an *abstract* of their proposed paper by *May 15, 2017*. Abstracts should be no longer than 500 words (references are not included in this word count). We welcome papers from a variety of disciplines and methodologies, and encourage graduate students to submit their research to this special issue. Instead of fake news, how about disinformation? The partial and/or misleading of unverified events posing as information but tending more towards gossip, scandal and slander, with the intent to polarize debate and damage reputations. Often put forth from behind masked partisan lenses. *** Last Call for Demos and Posters *** 22nd ACM International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces IUI 2017 St. Raphael Resort, Limassol, Cyprus March 13-16, 2017 http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/lm/lm.php?tk=YWlyLUwJCQlhaXItTEBsaXN0c2Vydi… ACM IUI 2017 is the 22nd annual meeting of the intelligent interfaces community and serves as a premier international forum for reporting outstanding research and development on intelligent user interfaces. The 22nd edition of the conference will be held in Limassol, Cyprus. Limassol (or Lemesos) is a multicultural bustling town, flanked by two ancient cities, Amathus and Kourion, and guarded by the Amathusian Aphrodite and Appolo Hylates. It is a town of great visual diversity and contrast from spectacular seafront views, historic places like the mediaeval Castle, and Byzantine churches. Along the 17 km long sandy beaches, two Marinas, world renowned 5 star hotels, and a most exciting dining, shopping, nightlife and yachting scene create a year-round vibrant lifestyle well beyond the expectations of a Mediterranean island. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI), with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design or the arts. Our focus is to improve the interaction between humans and machines, by leveraging both more traditional HCI approaches, as well as solutions that involve state-of-the art AI techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. ACM IUI welcomes contribution from any relevant arena: academia, business, or non-profit organizations. Demos The demonstrations track complements the overall program of the conference. Demonstrations show implementations of novel, interesting, and important intelligent user interface concepts or systems. We invite submissions relevant to intelligent user interfaces and which address, but are not limited to, the topics of the conference. All submissions are intended to convey a scientific result or work in progress and should not be advertisements for commercial software packages. The page limit for demo papers is 4 pages (including references). Accepted demo papers will be published in the companion proceedings in the ACM Digital Library. Posters Posters provide an opportunity for sharing valuable ideas, eliciting useful feedback on early-stage work and fostering discussions and collaborations among colleagues. We invite submissions on all topics of the conference. All submissions should convey a scientific result or work in progress that is not yet ready to be published as a full length research paper at a refereed conference. We construe recommender systems broadly, including applications ranging from e-commerce to social networking, platforms from web to mobile and beyond, and a wide variety of technologies ranging from collaborative filtering to knowledge-based reasoning. Topics of interest for RecSys 2017 include (but are not limited to): - Algorithm scalability - Case studies of real-world implementations - Conversational recommender systems - Context-aware recommenders - Evaluation metrics and studies - Explanations and evidence - Field and user studies - Group recommenders - Innovative/New applications - Machine learning for recommendation - Mobile and multi-channel recommendations - Novel paradigms - Personalisation - Preference elicitation - Privacy and Security - Recommendation algorithms - Social recommenders - Semantic technologies for recommendation - Trust and reputation - Theoretical foundations - User interaction and interfaces - User modelling The authors will be asked to indicate whether their paper is primarily Algorithm or Application focussed. Algorithm papers should discuss novel algorithmic approaches to recommendation challenges, with appropriate evaluations and comparisons to baseline works. Application papers should discuss new domains or large-scale applications of recommenders or focus on user experience, interface, or impact. This will allow the PC Chairs to better assign reviewers and to balance the program. PAPER SUBMISSION CATEGORIES LONG PAPERS should report on substantial contributions of lasting value. The maximum length is 8 pages (plus up to 1 page references). Each accepted long paper will be included in the conference proceedings and presented in a plenary session as part of the main conference program. We expect the review process to be highly selective: the acceptance rates for full papers in the past three years were 20-24%. SHORT PAPERS typically discuss exciting new work that is not yet mature enough for a long paper. The maximum length is 4 pages (plus up to 1 page references). Each accepted short paper will be included in the conference proceedings and presented in a plenary session as part of the main conference. The presentation may include a system demonstration. Note that rejected long paper submissions will not be considered as short papers. SIGCHI SUBMITTER AGREEMENT RecSys 2017 is a SIGCHI conference and making a submission to a SIGCHI conference is a serious matter. It's struck me more than once this election how much in common the attitudes of those wishing to justify white fragility in the face of multi-ethnic society have with the (post?-)postmodern left. An aversion to truth, the declaration that all sources of authority are ideological and therefore suspect, the inability to approach any discussion empirically, the use of anecdotes that reinforce affective investments as a substitute for the notion of "fact," (one might term this the primacy of the fragile white lived experience), etc. What is sad is that this bundle of tactics is quite obviously not aligned with what the academic left might imagine its political aspirations to be. There is the tendency to mistake criticality for knee-jerk suspicion, broad generalizations, and the inability to engage with nuance. There is the total failure to distinguish between having a point of view on the basis of data and interpretation and having a point of view on the basis of the denial of politics as a collective labor. One that requires the resources of data and models, which in turn produce both the solutions and the problems of living together. The alternative is fawning adoration for a strongman figure that accomplishes the magical, saying nothing while simultaneously "telling it like it really is" on the right, and impotent "I told you so's" about perspectivalism on the left ("it's constructed! How dare you arbitrate between fake and real! Who are you to judge!"). All the while the material conditions for brown, black, poor, female, queer, neurodiverse, Native, and especially non-American lives are subject to real and lasting effects as a consequence of the interpretive lenses we choose for politics and living. Data without models is as bad as models without data. Choosing one (eg brittle and empty scientism, see eg scientific racism) over the other (some neurotic onanism of affect, see, eg, both Trump's supporters and Hillary's, who failed spectacularly to make the case for why she was the better candidate, engaging in a months long orgy of "Trump is bad" instead, fueling exactly their mirror image on the right, who turned out in droves to elect their dear leader) is stupid, and a bad a strategy for politics. Particularly for the left, who depends on meaningful and invested empiricism to resurrect rewritten histories and minor genealogies, to demonstrate the historicism of otherwise naturalized ideological claims, and to point out the social construction of biologized categories (eg, there are more genetic differences within a race than across them). All this work is necessary to open the world to alternatives, so to see it lambasted from the very political position that depends on it for relevance is a frustrating and all too common and myopic failure of the left, and particularly the academic left. Abandoning a truth/falsehood distinction doesn't make politics less untruthful, or guarantee its secular denaturalization. All it does is abandon the shifting of the goal posts to the right, who now declare new truths by dawn as they hide the bodies of truths dearly departed at dusk. Make no mistake: this distinction is a political fight. Be aware of where you stand. Much of the attention by journalists focuses on assessing the well-publicized decision by some blogs to release incomplete exit polls erroneously predicting a victory for Democratic candidate John Kerry. This discourse works to make sense of the status and credibility of blogs while simultaneously allowing journalists to negotiate their role as authoritative providers of political news. Existing and proposed regulatory and governance regimes place obligations on those who manage (process, use and collect) data. The end-users of applications provisioned in the cloud and IoT also have certain rights that must be respected – various parties all bear varying degrees of responsibility, which must be properly managed. Managing these rights and responsibilities is becoming increasingly complex, both technically and legally, particularly due to the emergence of new cloud services and models, as well as because of movements towards collaborative, decentralised and mobile clouds. For instance, the cloud will play an increasing role in supporting the evolving IoT, which exacerbates issues of scale and data management while bringing real (physical) world considerations. Building on the successes of the previous workshops, CLaw 2017 aims to facilitate an interdisciplinary exploration of tech-legal challenges as regards emerging systems technologies. =========================================================== The workshop aims to encompass a broad range of issues where technology and law intersect. The Researcher will conduct a grounded, comparative empirical study of digital entrepreneurship in African cities. We are interested in the practices of digital entrepreneurship, how opportunities in digital economies are created and exploited, which local actors are better or worse positioned to extract value, the emergence of clusters and ecosystems of digital entrepreneurship, and how African contexts affect these processes/how observed processes differ from the Global North. A secondary focus is on narratives and discourses around digital entrepreneurship in Africa, and how they shape on-the-ground realities. The researcher will primarily focus on fieldwork in several African cities, as well as writing and analysis, using a range of methods (interviews, participant observation, thematic/narrative analysis, surveys). We are therefore seeking a researcher with experience in conducting qualitative social science and case studies.
