JOINT NYC/DC MEETUP WEDS: Content Rules?! Newsfeeds, Algorithms, Content Moderation, and Ethics
by Joly MacFie 16 Jan '17

16 Jan '17

Wednesday's event is the first time we've done a live inter-city meetup. Should be interesting! We still have plenty of seats available at the NYC node, so please join us. GrubHub is across the street from Bryant Park and, as you might imagine, there will be food and drink! *RSVP* A little background on the event. The idea for this came in the run up to last years *USA-IGF* <https://www.igf-usa.org/>. We already had a session on free speech issues thus it got bumped. What it really was about how what we see on the Internet is shaped, the public interest in that, and the role of governance. Since then we've been overtaken by events - not just fake news, but a general awareness of the bubble effect. The are many facets to this, and it looks like it will merit a series. Secondly, the format. We all know how remote participants are second-class participants in meetups.. At last year's *Inbox Awesome* <http://www.inboxawesome.org/>, *Justin Gallagher*, VP of Product at Trello, spoke (video <https://livestream.com/internetsociety/inawe16/videos/139391817>). He talked about the company's policy of "*One remote? All remote!*". If any one person attends a meeting remotely, they all go back to their desks and webcams. So the idea came - if we hook up two meetups then everybody will be a remote participant together! Let's see if it works. We will use Zoom. There will also be a *livestream*, just for viewers and archive, joly posted: "On Wednesday Jan 18 2017 the New York and Washington, DC Chapters of the Internet Society will hold a joint panel discussion - Content Rules?! Newsfeeds, Algorithms, Content Moderation, and Ethics <https://www.eventbrite.com/e/content-rules-newsfeeds-algorithms-content-mod…>* - at the *American University* in DC, and *GrubHub* in NYC. Our panel will address the technical and ethical questions raised by the social, political, and economic impact of the increasing prominence of these algorithmically negotiated information spaces, including: Should these platforms be considered public spaces? What are the impacts of (algorithmically) moderated content? Should the public have a right to see and know the algorithms being used to moderate and control content? At what point do we consider private platforms as media?Panelists: In Washington, DC - *Jessa Lingel* - Assistant Professor, Annenberg School of Communications; *Andrew Bridges* - Partner, Fenwick & West LLP. CFP - 3rd IEEE International Workshop on Internet of Things for Active and Assisted Living (IoTAAL) - IEEE Global IoT Summit 2017, Geneva, Switzerland - 6-9 June 2017
by Laura Montanini 16 Jan '17

16 Jan '17

CALL FOR PAPERS (apologies for multiple copies) *3rd IEEE International Workshop on Internet of Things for Active and Assisted Living (IoTAAL)* In conjunction with IEEE Global IoT Summit 2017, Geneva, Switzerland - 6-9 June 2017. http://www.tlc.dii.univpm.it/iotaalms/iotaal2017/ *MOTIVATION AND SCOPE* Increased life expectancy and decreased birth rates are challenging developed countries worldwide, with a rapidly growing elderly population, and a declining workforce. These two contextual phenomena are generating new needs, as ageing increases the probability of developing physical and cognitive impairments, requiring new and more effective ways to provide support and care. According to the United Nations, the elderly, defined as people over the age of 60, will make up 37% of the European population by 2050, from 20% in 2000: this will put a dramatic pressure on public welfare systems, and new ways of assistance and care delivery have to be designed. The Internet of Things may provide significant enhancement to the quality of life for the elderly and, in general, people in need, bringing new algorithms, architectures and platforms into Active and Assisted Living (AAL), to develop new and innovative approaches. A peculiar aspect of IoT relies in enabling the collection of massive amounts of data, generated from physical and virtual sensors, things, smart objects and users. As such, IoT is totally functional to AAL, with the pervasive collection of environmental and personal data related to the monitored subject, and their processing, aimed at generating information to be used in different types of applications, from behavioral analysis, to gesture and action recognition, to fall prevention and detection, to human-machine interaction, just to mention a few. *TOPICS OF INTEREST* This workshop aims at investigating the close relationship between IoT and AAL, in a data-oriented perspective, and at different layers: from the technologies enabling sensor data collection, to the communication architectures needed to support data transfer, to the reasoning techniques applied to data, in order to generate the information upon which AAL services and functionalities are built. Among the topics of interest, a non-exhaustive list includes: - use of emerging networking, sensing and tracking technologies for AAL - IoT enabled signal acquisition, analysis, and processing for activity identification and recognition in AAL - low power communication technologies - green IoT and sustainable solutions for AAL - cloud and mobile cloud architectures supporting AAL through IoT - privacy-preserving data processing techniques - big data, analytics, and signal processing for AAL enabled by an IoT approach - machine learning to enable AAL services (behavioral analysis, gesture and action recognition, fall prevention and detection, intake monitoring, anomalous patterns detection, sleep monitoring, etc…) - datasets to enable benchmarking of machine learning algorithms for AAL applications - new design paradigms in human-machine interaction for AAL - smart and sustainable IoT solutions for AAL - implementation of Social IoT for AAL - sensor webs and AAL - semantic web of things for AAL - distributed sensing and alarming technologies for AAL - smart interfaces for AAL - user-adapted interaction with AAL smart objects - models of context and context awareness - IoT applications, systems, and testbeds for AAL - IoT for AAL devices and accessibility - Future directions in IoT for AAL *IMPORTANT DATES* *Paper submission deadline: February 28, 2017* Acceptance/rejection announcement: March 31, 2017 Final workshop papers due: April 30, 2017 *SUBMISSION OF PAPERS* We encourage the submission of original contributions investigating and studying IoT and AAL: - Full research papers (max 6 pp. in PDF) - Short papers (3 pp. in PDF) for position papers and research-in-progress papers Standard IEEE Transactions templates for Microsoft Word or LaTeX formats found at: http://www.ieee.org/conferences_events/conferences/publishing/templates.html *ORGANIZING COMMITTEE* Workshop co-chairs: - Susanna Spinsante (Università Politecnica delle Marche – ITALY) - Ilknur Celik (Middle East Technical University, Northern Cyprus Campus – TURKEY) - Ilaria Torre (University of Genoa – ITALY) Technical program co-chairs: - Ennio Gambi (Università Politecnica delle Marche – ITALY) - Lambros Lambrinos (Cyprus University of Technology – CYPRUS) - Ciprian Dobre (University Politehnica of Bucharest – ROMANIA) Publicity co-chairs: - Enea Cippitelli (Università Politecnica delle Marche – ITALY) - Laura Montanini (Università Politecnica delle Marche – ITALY) TPC members (list to be completed): - Claudio Enrico Palazzi (Università degli Studi di Padova – ITALY) - Ahmed Abdelgawad (Central Michigan University – USA) - Nuno Garcia (University of Beira Interior – PORTUGAL) - Andrea Barbaresi (Telecom Italia SpA – Italy) - Dirk Ahlers (NTNU - Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim – NORWAY) - Emanuele Principi (Università Politecnica delle Marche – ITALY) - An Braeken (Vrije Universiteit Brussel – BELGIUM) - Emmanuel Conchon (University of Toulouse – FRANCE) - Stefano Squartini (Università Politecnica delle Marche – ITALY) - Chris Nugent (Ulster University – UK) - Martin Jacobsson (KTH Royal Institute of Technology – SWEDEN) - Franco Davoli (University of Genoa – ITALY) - Constandinos Mavromoustakis (University of Nicosia – CYPRUS) - Albena Mihovska (Aalborg Universitet – DENMARK) - Laura Montanini (Università Politecnica delle Marche – ITALY) - Ariel Stulman (Jerusalem College of Technology – ISRAEL) - Javier Medina Quero (University of Granada – SPAIN) - Katarzyna Wac (University of Geneva – SWITZERLAND) - Lucio Ciabattoni (Università Politecnica delle Marche – ITALY) - Paolo Sernani (Università Politecnica delle Marche – ITALY) - Macarena Espinilla Estévez (University of Jaen – SPAIN) - Thomas Plagemann (University of Oslo – NORWAY) - Aldo Franco Dragoni (Università Politecnica delle Marche – ITALY) - Thomas Zinner (University of Wurzburg – GERMANY) The workshop is supported by endorsement from the following entities: - IEEE IoT Initiative - IEEE Italy Section Consumer Electronics Society Chapter - IEEE Signal Processing Society - SIG on IoT For more information please visit the workshop website at http://www.tlc.dii.univpm.it/iotaalms/iotaal2017/

Extended Deadline for Spectating Play (Apr 24-25, Tampere)
by Olli Sotamaa 16 Jan '17

16 Jan '17

Due to popular demand, we have decided to extend the abstract deadline for our seminar. The new deadline is Wednesday the 25th of January. See the CFP at: spectatingplay.com We have also announced our first expert commentator: we warmly welcome professor Tanja Sihvonen from the University of Vaasa as our first keynote speaker and commentator for the event! Hope to see you in Tampere in April, Olli Olli Sotamaa // Associate Professor Game Research Lab // University of Tampere --- Spectating play (Apr 24-25, Tampere) Watching play unfold is almost as pervasive as play itself. Today, developments such as let's plays, eSports, and streaming have made spectating play an important mode of engaging with digital games. Historically, sporting arenas have brought together not only skillful athletes, but huge crowds of spectators. The audience has an effect on the play, from the cheering of the fans of the home team, to rule changes implemented in sports in order to make them more television friendly. The spectator experience places different design considerations on a game than that of the player experience. Spectating Play is the 13th annual spring seminar organized by University of Tampere Game Research Lab. The seminar welcomes any and all scholarly work on the intersection of audiences and game/play. The seminar will be held in Tampere, Finland and will be free of charge; the number of participants will be restricted. http://spectatingplay.com/

by Sebastian Deterding 15 Jan '17

15 Jan '17

=============================================== SECOND CALL FOR PARTICIPATION MICI 2017: Mixed-Initiative Creative Interfaces Workshop at CHI 2017, May 7, 2017, Denver, CO Submit by Jan 31, 2017 =============================================== Enabled by artificial intelligence techniques, we are witnessing the rise of a new paradigm of computational creativity support: mixed-initiative creative interfaces (MICIs) put human and computer in a tight interactive loop where both take turns suggesting, producing, evaluating, modifying, selecting creative outputs. This paradigm could broaden and amplify creative capacity for all, but is today mostly developed and studied in game AI. This one-day workshop at CHI 2017 therefore convenes CHI and game researchers to advance mixed-initiative approaches to creativity support. TOPICS OF SPECIAL INTEREST * User experience and engagement in MICIs * Interaction, design and evaluation challenges of MICIs * Future scenarios of human-AI co-creativity and MICIs in and beyond creative practice * MICIs for accessibility, inclusion, participation, and user-generated content * MICIs and models of creativity and collaboration We invite participants to submit 2-6pp. position papers in the CHI Extended Abstract format (https://chi2017.acm.org/submission-formats.html) via EasyChair at https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=mici2017. We will review submissions and select 15-25 based on relevance, quality, and diversity of inputs. At least one author of each accepted paper needs to register for the workshop and for one or more days of the conference. We expressly invite participants to bring system demos to the event. IMPORTANT DATES * December 15, 2016: Early acceptance submission deadline * December 21, 2016: Notification of early acceptance * January 31, 2017: Regular submission deadline * February 20, 2017: Notification of regular acceptance * May 7, 2017: Workshop For further information, consult the workshop site http://mici2017.org or write to mici2017(a)easychair.org.

Join our team at the Oxford Internet Institute: we’re hiring a Data Scientist to study the geography of the darknet
by Mark Graham 14 Jan '17

14 Jan '17

*Data Scientist* Grade 7: Salary £31,076 – £38,183 p.a. The Oxford Internet Institute is a leading centre for research into individual, collective and institutional behaviour on the Internet. We are looking for a full-time Researcher to work with Professor Mark Graham <https://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/mark-graham/>and Dr Joss Wright <https://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/joss-wright/>on a new project on ‘The Economic Geography of the Darknet’. Relatively little is known about the geography of the global darknet trade. Although the strong anonymity on darknet markets prohibits any data collection about the geography of consumption of things like drugs and weapons, there is a large amount of data available about the sale of such goods and services. This project seeks to employ techniques from computational social science and digital geography in order to achieve two primary objectives. First, we seek to use scrape relevant geographic information out datasets of darknet sales: building some re-usable data at the country level (e.g. ‘the number of heroin sellers based in every country’, ‘the total number of vendors selling weapons in every country’ etc.). Second, we seek to map, visualise, and analyse those data: using multiple variables (the various categories of products and services) to ask ‘what is the geography of illicit products and services?’ We hope to further ask ‘does the online trade of illicit goods and services have a significantly different geography from conventional mappings of that trade?’ In other words, can data from the darknet be used as a proxy for more traditional (and much harder to collect) data about illegal economic activities? The position is suited to candidates who have recently completed a doctorate in computer science, GIS, economics, sociology or other relevant discipline (i.e. postdocs), but we also welcome applications from qualified individuals without a doctorate (e.g. candidates with industry experience). Programming skills, and experience with GIS are required. Based at the Oxford Internet Institute, this position is available immediately for 12 months (as a part-time role) or 7 months (as a full-time role) in the first instance, with the possibility of renewal thereafter, funding permitting. Please note: This role will not attract sufficient points to obtain a sponsored tier 2 visa under the points based immigration system, however applications are welcome from candidates who don’t currently have the right to work in the UK, but who would be eligible to obtain a visa via another route. Download the Job Description and Selection Criteria <https://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/126926-Data-Scientist-1…> Please note that you may only apply through the Oxford University’s recruitment website <https://www.recruit.ox.ac.uk/pls/hrisliverecruit/erq_jobspec_details_form.j…> Only applications received before 12.00 midday GMT on Thursday 26 January 2017 can be considered. Interviews for those short-listed are currently planned to take place on week commencing 13 February 2017. ------------------------------------------ Mark Graham Professor of Internet Geography Oxford Internet Institute University of Oxford Faculty Fellow The Alan Turing Institute Research Affiliate School of Geography and the Environment University of Oxford Visiting Fellow Department of Media and Communications London School of Economics and Political Science markgraham.space | @geoplace <http://twitter.com/geoplace> <http://twitter.com/geoplace>

Reminder DATA POWER 2017 call for sessions and papers
by Tracey P. Lauriault 13 Jan '17

13 Jan '17

*DATA POWER 2017* A two-day, international conference organized by Carleton and Sheffield universities. *Dates:* 22nd & 23rd June 2017 *Venue:* School of Journalism & Communication, Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada *Submission deadline: *Friday 27th January 2017 *Call for abstracts/proposals* Increasingly pervasive in our daily lives, data are constituted through converging technologies and practices such as the internet of things, smart cities, drones and precision agriculture; global finance, credit scoring and data brokerage firms; surveillance, predictive policing and customer relation management systems, to name a few. Data are also generated by and flow through applications, software, platforms, and infrastructures that reshape how we play, work, eat, socialise, see ourselves, and know the world. In an era of data power, data have become agentic, especially when input into black-boxed algorithms and systems whose outputs are used to profile and sort us, influence the political economy, and for purposes for which no consent was given. Is this a 'fait accompli'? To answer this question, the Data Power 2017 conference asks: How can we reclaim some form of data-based power and autonomy, and advance data-based technological citizenship, while living in regimes of data power? Is it possible to regain agency and mobilize data for the common good? To do so, which theories help to interrogate and make sense of the operations of data power? What kind of design frameworks are needed to build and deploy data-based technologies with values and ethics that are equitable and fair? How can big data be mobilized to improve how we live, beyond notions of efficiency and innovation? This conference follows the successful Data Power 2015 Conference <http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/socstudies/datapower> held in the UK and creates a space to reflect on these and other critical issues relating to data’s ever more ubiquitous power. To date, the following keynote speakers and commentators on data power have been confirmed: - Helen Nissenbaum <http://www.nyu.edu/projects/nissenbaum/>, New York University, co-author of Obfuscation: A User’s Guide to Privacy and Protest with Finn Brunton (2015), and PI of the Values in Design project; - Paul N.Edwards <http://pne.people.si.umich.edu/>, University of Michigan, author of A Vast Machine: Computer Models, Climate Data, and the Politics of Global Warming (2010); - Stefania Milan <https://www.stefaniamilan.net/about-me>, University of Amsterdam, author of *Social Movements and Their Technologies: Wiring Social Change* (2016), and PI of the DATACTIVE project; - Frank Pasquale <https://www.law.umaryland.edu/faculty/profiles/faculty.html?facultynum=984>, University of Maryland, author of *The Black Box Society: The Secret Algorithms that Control Money and Information *(2015).
