Fwd: Call for papers - Special issue 3/2017 “The Remaking of Truth in the Digital Age”
by Cecilia Tanaka 17 Jan '17

17 Jan '17

For your knowledge! <3 Ceci ------ "The future cannot be predicted, but futures can be invented." ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Call for paper:/CS Journal of Media Performing Arts and Cultural Studies./ Special issue 3/2017 “The Remaking of Truth in the Digital Age” edited by Chiara Giaccardi and Nathan Jurgenson The deadline for abstract submission is: January 31st 2017 *The Special Issue * Many thought Brexit would not come to pass, that Donald Trump could not be elected, experts, pollsters, and probability models told us so, down to the decimal point. An entire media apparatus that was increasingly certain came to produce instead confusion. The manufactured character of news becomes dramatically exposed, as well as the entertainment-driven nature of electoral politics that increasingly look like reality shows. The vacuum left behind is threatened to be filled with the rising tide of hate speech, hoaxes, and so-called fake news. We introduce this project amidst this wave of anti-inclusionary and counter-informative forces. Populist movements around the globe are rallying against journalists, politicians, and other professionals and experts who themselves have failed to speak to and about the lives of these people. We are said to now be in a “post truth” time, one where debate over truth has been replaced by a chaos of facts, where the work of building knowledge feels exhausting and impossible, leading to a normalization of the surreal, the uncritical acceptance of heavily biased information as intuitive and unproblematic. This issue is about our moment of epistemic chaos, the decline of old knowledge gatekeepers, and the political ramifications of fake, misleading, and propagandistic information. We pay special attention to the role of new, digital, social technologies of knowledge and their relationship with politics. We cannot understand how and what people know without understanding the set of information technologies in which we inhabit. Those debates around the diminishing of traditional institutions being disrupted away by the rising tide and quickening flow of digitality are instructive, too, as institutions of epistemic authority, grapple with staying useful and relevant today. This issue is a meta-discourse on discourse in a time many have called “post truth.” What is it to do theoretical work in a so-called post-truth world without falling in the equally undesirable opposites of cynical functionalism (truth is merely what works, comforted in what they already know, and preserving the status quo) or a new positivism (paternalistic explainerism, where truth is a matter of numbers, and those in power claim a false objectivity). What might Foucault’s “parrhesia” mean today? And, ontologically, the disagreement over the basic shape of thing in the world might lead to useless possibilities like a radical constructivism where reality is merely what we do with it or an essentialism where reality can somehow be perfectly grasped using the right methodologies. If reality is hard to grasp, its consequences are hard to miss: people suffer injustice and tourture, strive to survive in impossibly harsh conditions, and find ways of resilience and resistance. Suffering and death has a concreteness that escapes any rhetorical strategy, a reminder of the limits of the defeatism of simply claiming everything is fake or a simulation. Is there room for a critical realism that recognizes that reality always exceeds our capacity to grasp it? One that could suggest respect and care over arrogance and exploitation? These crucial questions have precedent. A decade ago, conversations about the internet often centered on how truth and news and information more generally will flow when people have access to consume so much more information. And, only a little later, when so many more people can produce such information. Those debates around the introductions of Wikipedia, Google News, or Facebook Newsfeed are instructive today as we continue to struggle with how to incentivize, create, and sort information in ways that are accurate and just. We should draw on the literature describing the history of political performance and propaganda. Global strategies of political misinformation and shaping information ecosystems to manufacture ideology and behavior shape and are shaped by the information technologies of their times, and these are lessons we need to draw from to understand our current moment. Is the epistemic vertigo being felt a feature or a flaw, a momentary readjustment or a new normal? Describing our current situation should also draw on past thinking about knowledge, politics, and technology. For instance, the debates about positivism, the myth of the neutrality and objectivity of numbers and science are instructive. From “big data” science to “data journalism”, numbers play a large part in our contemporary data flows, from metric-based incentives like clicks, shares, and followers to the ubiquity of polling and probabilistic forecasting of elections. Indeed, the most important global news media entity, Facebook, claims it does not have a political or editorial philosophy because it is merely “technology”, a nod to the history of claiming false neutrality. How do we describe epistemic responsibility and pedagogy within a tech culture of supposed objective disinterest? Is there room to move beyond reducing people to numbers? Is a different “proxemics” based on closeness possible? What is the role of social science in this discussion, especially with respect to new media technologies? Is there room for dialogue today, when information is consumed as a resource for belonging, for maintaining oppositional echo-chamber blocs, especially acknowledging the point that knowledge and understanding is never purely for its own sake but is always entwined with power? The knowledge-power link is no longer something that needs to be made convincing when more and more information is so overtly weaponized, targeted, in the Info Wars. And how can social science speak to and about our own epistemic bubbles? What about the epistemic gap between those with and without college educations, those who and who are not part of the knowledge-work economy? We welcome submissions about all of what we’ve talked about here, as well as the many more threads we did not mention relating to this complex theoretical topic. *Deadlines & Guidelines* Please send your abstract to: redazione.cs(a)unicatt.it <mailto: redazione.cs(a)unicatt.it> by *January 31, 2017*. Notifications of acceptance will be emailed shortly after the deadline. Abstracts must be from 300 to 400 words long, and may be presented in English. The proposal shall include 5 keywords, authors, institution, and contacts (e-mail), together with a short curriculum for each author. Authors will be asked to send the whole article (preferably in English, but Spanish, French and Italian are also welcome) by April 30, 2017. Contributions will be sent to two independent reviewers in a double-blind procedure prior to publication decision. Articles should be between 4,000-5,000 words (no more than 35,000 characters, spaces and notes included), but shorter articles will also be considered. Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. A guide for authors, sample issues, and other relevant information is available on the journal’s website. Facebook Post Content Analysis
by Jessika Tremblay 17 Jan '17

17 Jan '17

Dear all, I am preparing to deliver a workshop about how to analyze and interpret the content of a *Facebook post*, specifically from an anthropological perspective. I've come across quite a bit of literature about the significance of Facebook and social media for contemporary social science research, but little in the way of actual methods and techniques for interpreting data once you return from the field. If you have any literature recommendations about this I would be very grateful. A focus on anthropology would be great, but of course I'm interested in learning more about how other internet researchers go about this. thanks, -- Jessika Tremblay Ethnography Lab Coordinator PhD Candidate Department of Anthropology University of Toronto, Room 332 19 Russell Street, Toronto, ON, M5S 2S2

Please note that paper authors must be registered in the ECPR electronic platform with the email address they will include in the paper proposals. All the best Alice Mattoni and Elena Pavan *** *CALL FOR PAPERS* *ECPR General Conference – 6-9 September 2017, Oslo* ** *Section title* *Political Sciences and the Big Data Challenge From Big Data in Politics to the Politics of Big Data* *Section organizers* Chair: Elena Pavan, Scuola Normale Superiore Co-chair: Alice Mattoni, Scuola Normale Superiore *Section outline and themes* This section aims to open a much-needed space for developing within the ECPR context a critical and informed reflection on the multi-faceted nexus between Big Data and political science. It understands Big Data not solely in terms of large-scale datasets of textual or digital data that require us to tune our research practices. More radically, it starts from a conceptualization of Big Data as a complex set of cultural, political and scientific knowledge practices that challenge the traditional modes in which research questions are posed and framed, analyses are performed, as well as the ways in which results are communicated to the public and thus affect public discourse and debates. Consistently, the section comprises a set of panels that aim to investigate two interrelated aspects. On the one hand, panels will engage with how Big Data are leveraging our understanding of political dynamics within complex societies. In this respect, the section will consider applications of Big Data in connection to public opinion and institutional politics (party dynamics, political communications, etc.) as well as in relation to the study of contemporary forms of collective action and unconventional political participation (social movements, digital activism and the like). On the other, panels will develop a specific take on Big Data, considering how they become a contested research and political terrain, and thus inviting critical reflections on methodological and epistemological implications but also on the power dynamics that entwine with the increased datification of our societies. In this sense, this Section offers a unique occasion to foster the convergence of scholars and researchers currently working on the value of Big Data for studying politics but also on the politics of Big Data themselves. With this aim in mind, the panels in this Section will welcome papers employing different theoretical, empirical and methodological approaches on Big Data, with a single-case or a comparative multinational and/or multiplatform perspective. More specifically, the Section will welcome papers on the following topics. *Big data, public opinion and institutional politics* Digital social behaviors and, particularly, social media communications and interactions are increasingly considered a fundamental component of electoral campaigns, governmental and legislative dynamics as well as of the relationships and the interactions between party members and political leaders with their constituencies. Thus, it is in the online public discourse unravelling on social media platforms that politicians and policy-makers lean to an increasing extent to have the pulse of ongoing and ever evolving political trends and public opinions. This panel invites papers that apply Big Data to the study of contemporary political institutional and/or public opinion dynamics with national or comparative perspectives thus providing a space to inquiry about how this type of data and related methodological and analytical practices can leverage our understanding of traditional political science topics. *Big data and unconventional political participations* The rapid diffusion and increased use of social media platforms in grassroots politics has relevant consequences for the organization of social movements and their forms of protest. While more traditional forms of collective actions still exist, grassroots politics often follows a logic of connective action according to which collective actors are less central than in the past for the success of mobilizations. Moreover, activists lean increasingly on web-based platforms and internet services that produce Big Data flows worldwide. This panel invites papers that investigate to what extent Big Data are changing the way in which activists organize and protest with national or comparative perspectives thus providing a space to inquiry about how this type of data and related methodological and analytical practices can leverage our understanding of grassroots political participation today. *A paradigm shift for political science? Discussing Big Data epistemology and its implication for political studies* Recent events, such as the last USA Presidential elections, have clearly shown the potentials and, perhaps, even to a larger extent, the criticalities of predictive analytical practices in the study of political dynamics. The time seems more than ripe to begin re-addressing the methodological practices that underpin our understanding of sociopolitical dynamics – in particular in relation to our extensive use of large-scale digital and textual datasets which are deemed to be “representative” of citizens’ political preferences, desires, and priorities. Consistently, this panel invites papers that address, theoretically or empirically, the potentialities and the criticalities of Big Data as a new epistemological practice for producing valid and socially relevant scientific knowledge in the field of political science. *Big data as a political terrain: deconstructing and approaching critically datification* Big Data are not a neutral field of practice and knowledge, in particular when it comes to politics. Political actors, economic actors and media actors understand in different ways the concept of big data. More precisely, when political parties and social movements engage with Big Data, they often evoke specific, and contrasting, understanding of what datification processes means in and for politics. This panel invites papers that deconstruct and approach critically processes of datification in contemporary politics by looking at the intersections between different political cultures and (big) data cultures, focusing on the discourses and imaginaries that political actors develop around Big Data, and investigating the media practices related to the construction, manipulation and subversion of Big Data within the political realm. *How to submit a paper* Please submit paper proposals to elena.pavan(a)sns.it <mailto:elena.pavan@sns.it> and alice.mattoni(a)sns.it <mailto:alice.mattoni@sns.it> by *January 30^th, 2017* including the following info: - papers titles and abstracts (no more than 500 words) - institutional affliliation - institutional email address We will then arrange the selected papers in panels and submit them to the ECPR via their electronic platform. Re: [Air-L] Government website harvesting
by Grotke, Abigail 17 Jan '17

17 Jan '17

Hi Joy, I'm working on the End of Term government web archive which you've seen mentioned in the news, and my colleague Jefferson wrote a nice writeup today on the Internet Archive blog: https://blog.archive.org/2016/12/15/preserving-u-s-government-websites-and-…. Our project team has been working together for years, you can see our 2008 and 2012 archives here: http://eotarchive.cdlib.org/ . Some of the projects in the recent news are tangentially related to ours but being organized by others and without our coordination, with nominations are being contributed to our effort via this form: http://digital2.library.unt.edu/nomination/eth2016/ . More about how to contribute appears here: http://freegovinfo.info/node/11477 Some preservation efforts that we're heard about are separate entirely, and we aren't coordinating with everyone but focused on our specific activity. We can answer questions anyone has about our archive - email EOT-info(a)archive.org to reach me and other members of the team who can help respond. Thanks for the interest!
