CFP: Data Publics conference, Lancaster University, spring 2017

[Apologies for cross-posting] CALL FOR ABSTRACTS AND EXHIBITS Data Publics — Investigating the formation and representation of crowds, groups and clusters in digital economies Lancaster University, March 31 / April 1 & 2, 2017 Keynote speakers: John Bowers<http://www.ncl.ac.uk/sacs/staff/profile/john.bowers> (Newcastle University), Helen Kennedy<http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/socstudies/staff/staff-profiles/helen-kennedy> (The University of Sheffield), Michiel de Lange<http://www.uu.nl/staff/MLdeLange> (Utrecht University), Anders Koed Madsen<http://personprofil.aau.dk/129860?lang=en#/minside> (Aalborg University), Noortje Marres<https://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/cross_fac/cim/people/academic/noortje-marres/> (University of Warwick), Alex Taylor<http://ast.io/> (Microsoft Research) “Those indirectly and seriously affected for good or evil form a group distinctive enough to require recognition and name. The name selected is The Public” (John Dewey, 1927). There is a tension between how “publics” form spontaneously (for example in response to economic hardship, to create support groups, to protest about particular matters of concern) and how online users with similar consumption, browsing, movement patterns become grouped and acted upon as units of data, whether by organisations, researchers, or others. When people collectively and publicly self-organise to form a group, the identity of participants as well as the collective grouping itself may be apparent to all involved. However, with the rise, across a range of fields of digital and algorithmic technologies that work by segmenting people according to shared sets of interests, objectives, behavioural traits, and/or political persuasions, these processes as well as the identities of participants tends to be invisible to those involved. In the latter, it is only when these acts of ‘assigned’ collectivisation are exposed, perhaps deliberately (e.g. when confronting published research), perhaps unexpectedly (e.g. via data hacks/leaks), or perhaps when group self-recognition is achieved by users (e.g. via transparency apps/tools, social media, activism, freedom of information requests), that those involved begin to recognise their status as a “public”. This conference will investigate the diverse ways in which publics are, and can be, constituted, provoked, threatened, understood, and represented. This includes examining the role played in the formation of publics by new on- and offline infrastructures, data visualisations, social and economic practices, research methods and creative practices, and emerging and future technologies. Specifically, the event will facilitate cross-cutting conversations between designers, social scientists and creative technologists to explore the new challenges and opportunities afforded by thinking and working with “Data Publics”. This conference will be inherently interdisciplinary and as such we seek contributions from researchers within the areas of social science, design, new media art, data visualisation, and human-computer interaction. It will take place over three days, and will comprise a combination of hands-on workshops, paper presentations and an exhibition of work. Day one will provide hands-on introductions to key methods for investigating data publics, involving two workshops running in parallel. One workshop – ‘Digital Methods/Data Visualisation’, led by David Moats<https://www.tema.liu.se/tema-t/medarbetare/moats-david?l=en> – will introduce the digital methods and data visualisation approaches that can be used to conduct research in this field. The other – ‘Strategies, Tools and Participatory Processes’, led by Clara Crivellaro<https://openlab.ncl.ac.uk/people/b2052334> – will explore the practicalities of using design strategies, tools and participatory socio-technical processes to support the emergence and formation of publics. The day will end with participants from the two workshops entering into dialogue. Following the workshops, the next two days will feature a mixture of academic paper presentations and exhibits from participants, with a focus throughout on the way a diverse array of methods, analytical approaches, representational techniques and practical engagements might be related to one another, put in conversation and combined. Participants are warmly invited to presents digital artefacts, data-visualisations or performances alongside their academic work or as stand-alone pieces that explore the topic of data-publics. For participation in the conference, we seek two forms of contributions: full papers and works to exhibit. CALL FOR ABSTRACTS AND EXHIBITS We seek either (a) abstracts for papers or (b) descriptions of exhibits that each engage with the formation, relevance, and effects of “Data Publics”. We invite contributions from professionals, scholars, designers, artists, activists, and those in other related fields, working in areas including but not limited to sociology, anthropology, geography, digital methods, interaction design, data visualisation, human-computer interaction, and art. The deadline for submission is January 22nd, 2017. Contributions should address at least one of the following three themes: 1. Digital Economies / The Effects of Data Publics ● What are the social, economic, ethical (and other) implications of emerging and future data publics? ● How are data-oriented publics constituted, including in relation to digital economies? ● Through which registers of everyday experience (e.g. as associated with making financial decisions, seeking emotional support, campaigning for change) do individuals participate in such publics? 2. Emergence and Complexity / The Behaviours of Data Publics ● How do different conditions (e.g. social, technological, affective) impact the emergence of data-oriented publics? ● What new design paradigms are enabled with large-scale data publics? ● How might we better conceptualise and work with complex data publics? ● How are new technologies affecting the shape/direction of data publics? 3. Methods / Interactions and interventions with Data Publics ● How can we intervene in the formation, stabilisation, destabilisation, and transformation of publics? What role might such methods/creative practices themselves play in the constitution of data publics? ● What forms of creative practice/visualisation/interaction design/human-computer interaction are needed to engage with data publics and to either support the emergence of or sustain such publics? ● What (new/existing/combination of) methods/tools are required to study/shape the emergence/fate of data publics? HOW TO SUBMIT Those interested in participating in the conference should submit either a paper abstract including 5-10 indicative references, or a description of the work to be exhibited including, if relevant, a maximum of 5 illustrative images and an additional description of any technical/spatial requirements the exhibit has. Submissions of no more than 500 words should be sent to datapublics(a)lancaster.ac.uk<mailto:datapublics@lancaster.ac.uk> by January 22nd (descriptions of technical/spatial requirements and references are not included in the word count). We encourage participants to attend both the conference and a workshop, but it is not a requirement. Therefore, please also indicate in the submission whether you wish to attend (a) the conference and a workshop, or (b) just the conference. If you wish to attend a workshop please also indicate (c) whether you are interested in the ‘Digital Methods/Data Visualisation’ workshop or the ‘Strategies, Tools and Participatory Processes’ workshop. ** Call for Chapter Proposals ** Business Innovation and Disruption in the Videogames Industry: Global Perspectives - http://tinyurl.com/hvkdhhk [Vol. 5 in the Book Series "Business Innovation and Disruption in the Creative Industries"] Abstract Deadline: 1 April 2017 Volume Co-Editors: John Banks, Robert DeFillippi and Patrik Wikström Publisher: Edward Edgar Publisher This volume examines how innovations in business practices and models, studio and workplace cultures, technologies, digital platforms and game design methodologies are disrupting and transforming videogames industry structures, labour and work relations, customer relations, business models and competition. The volume will also specifically explore how these transformative trends and forces, while international in scale and dynamics, are experienced differently across the globe (from USA to Australia, Europe and Asia). Attention to these local and national differences will be a central theme of this book. The volume will also explore different and at times competing theoretical models, frameworks and perspectives that seek to grapple with and illuminate these transformations in the videogames industry. The volume is soliciting chapter proposals from a multidisciplinary array of scholars to investigate the below themes of business innovation and/or transformation of industry structures, modes of collaboration, business models, business strategies or competitive dynamics in the global videogames industry. • Disruption of the industry structure and value chain relations. • Innovative revenue/funding models for videogames development and production. • Transformations in user behaviour, particularly related to user innovation, including crowd-sourced innovation. • Intellectual property innovations in the videogames industries. • Innovative modes of content creation, aggregation and distribution. • Case studies of innovative modes of business response to disruption challenges. • Assessments of prospective economic winners and losers in the videogames ecosystems. • Issues related to studio and workplace cultures. • Value chains and market ecologies: from console to independent development. • Changing production processes and practice, including increasing role of data analytics. • Policy impacts on videogames industry, especially at national and local levels. The chapters will address the above themes through a variety of modes of analysis: institutional analyses, quantitative empirical study, and case studies. Our intention is to offer a plurality of theoretic perspectives and empirical methods from diverse social science, business and creative industry disciplines that can inform and illuminate our understanding of the forces shaping innovation and transformation in the global videogames industry. This volume is the fifth volume in a book series focused on business innovation and disruption in the creative industries and we are delighted to be able to continue our collaboration with Edward Elgar Publishers for this volume. 600 word abstracts should be submitted to [ja.banks(a)qut.edu.au] by 1 April 2017. CFP Moving Forward: Where is the Journalist in Social Media?
by Dr Samita Nandy 10 Jan '17

10 Jan '17

*The following conference might be of interest to Internet Studies scholars examining journalism and social media. Please share widely.* *Centre for Ecological, Social, and Informatics Cognitive Research (ESI.CORE)* Inaugural International Conference *Moving Forward: Where is the Journalist in Social Media?* *SpringHill Suites Downtown Denver Metropolitan State University of Denver Denver, Colorado USAJune 23-24, 2017* *Call for Papers:* In the current political climate, the constructions of celebrity leaders and popular forms of mediated truths, especially with the recent "fake" internet news, have raised questions about journalism. Tabloid and other forms of popular journalism use narrative devices of gossip, rumor and scandals while many news media have abandoned facts and intelligent analysis in favor of spectacular outrage and incivility, both situations acting as testaments to the lack of informed opinions. Although scholars and journalists work together during news reporting, investigations/documentaries, and on other issues that are covered by news media, scholars are often confined to academic research and disconnected from the realities faced by journalists. Can citizen journalists and journalism scholars help move forward with progressive research and practice? What are the qualifications and definitions of a ‘journalist?’ Is this someone who is employed professionally - or someone who has received an academic certification (degree) to be qualified? Or can anyone today be a journalist? Citizen participation has been seen as essential in the democratic processes of production, distribution, and reception of news. Online participatory media such as blogs, comments and videos offer a democratic platform for the expression of alternative ideas that may otherwise be filtered by traditional journalism. Yet, citizen journalists need critical media literacy that is often lost in the lure of visibility. How can journalism scholars creatively and critically engage citizen journalists in the dissemination of their research, informed opinions and cultural productions? The Centre for Ecological, Social, and Informatics Cognitive Research (ESI.CORE), in association with sponsors Centre for Media and Celebrity Studies (CMCS) and WaterHill Publishing, invites academics, journalists, publicists, producers and guests to attend, speak and collaborate at the inaugural international conference Moving Forward: Where is the Journalist in Social Media? Join us in Denver, Colorado where the conference will uniquely combine vibrant roundtable and media workshop panels in a collaborative network. The format of the conference aims at being open and inclusive ranging from interdisciplinary academic scholars to practitioners involved in all areas of print, broadcast and online journalism. Working papers and media productions will be considered for the conference. Extended versions of selected best papers will be published in an edited book. *Registration includes*: Your printed package for the complete conference, professional development workshops, coffee / tea breaks, access to evening receptions, complimentary evening drinks, consideration for publication. *Submission guidelines:* - 250-word abstract or workshop / roundtable proposal - Include a title, your name, e-mail address, and affiliation if applicable - Submit to conference Chair Dr William Huddy at email address: submit(a)esi.core.org - Deadline for abstract submission: *February 15, 2017* - Notification of acceptance:* March 15, 2017* - Early bird registration deadline: *April 30, 2017* - Full registration deadline*: May 30, 2017* - Conference reception and presentations: *June 23-24, 2017* *Topics include but are not limited to:* - Communication - Media - Journalism - Photojournalism - Television and Radio - Social Media - Informed Opinions - Infomercials - Advertisement - Publicity and Promotion - News - Interviews - Audience - Race - Gender - Environment and species - Class - Fiction - Genre - Biography - Theory and Methods - Ethics and Morality - Cognition - Media Literacy - Education and Advocacy - International Relations - Business and Community Partnerships *Conference Web Page*: www.esicore.org/events/denver2017.html *Conference Twitter *@esicore #MF2017 *Committee Members*: Josh Nathan and Ngoma Evelyn Moghalu *Conference Chair: *Dr William Huddy Dr. William Huddy earned his Ph.D. in Communication Studies from the University of Denver (2012). CFP: The Digital Everyday Conference: Exploration or Alienation? - May 6th 2017
by Gerbaudo, Paolo 10 Jan '17

10 Jan '17

Dear Colleagues, This year's annual Digital Culture conference organised by the Centre for Digital Culture at King's College London will be on the theme "The Digital Everyday: Exploration or Alienation?". The conference will take place on Saturday, 6th May 2017 at KCL Strand Campus in London. Abstract are due by 31 January 2017. Please find below the conference description. Best, Paolo -------------------------------------------------------------- The Digital Everyday: Exploration or Alienation? Centre for Digital Culture at King's College London CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS This international conference aims at exploring the digital everyday, understood as the transformation of everyday life practices brought about by digital technology. From how we buy, walk around, get a cab, love, break up, go to bed, meet new people and sexual partners to the way we rate services, turn on the fridge, exercise and eat, social media, apps, and Big Data are reshaping some of the most basic activities in our lives. The conference will explore these digitally enabled transformations by looking at a number of domains affected by these shifts, for instance: of work and leisure, of friendship and love, of habits and routines. We will also explore a number of overarching dynamics and trends in the digital world that contribute to these transformations, including: processes of digital individualisation and aggregation; the elisions of spatial and temporal barriers; trends towards quantification and datafication; and the dialectic between control and alienation. We invite participants from various intellectual traditions and streams of research including media studies, sociology, psychology, information science, computing and anthropology. Together, we will explore a number of key questions. How, for example, is digital transformation affecting everyday life? To what extent is this process one of increasing individualisation of social experience? Or might there be something more complex happening? What are the new psychological and social pathologies that result from the digital transformation of everyday life and from processes of datafication and quantification? Is digital technology allowing for new forms of control over our everyday life or is it increasing alienation, making us overly dependent on infrastructures beyond our grasp? Is digital technology contributing to extending our freedom to choose, or is it stifling us with an overabundance of options? Is it guiding us towards who we 'really' are or want to be, or is it plunging us into a hall of mirrors that only reinforces our isolation and narcissism? Is it facilitating exploration, serendipity and curiosity, or is it installing us into a pre-programmed and predictable world, into a filter bubble where choices can be more easily measured and manipulated? Proposed paper abstracts may address the following topics: transformations of work patterns; changes in everyday life routine (sleep, meals, etc.); fitness and sport activity; love and sexual interactions; friendship and acquaintanceship; consumption and entertainment; sense of place and time; transportation and tourism; play and leisure. The conference will comprise two plenary sessions and 4 breakout panels, and will host internationally acclaimed scholars as keynote speakers. The conference will take on Saturday, 6th May 2017. Abstract are due by 31 January 2017. Abstracts should be 250 words maximum, and include the author(s) name and position, and a short title. They should be submitted via EasyChair https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=digitaleveryday17<https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Feasychair.org%2Fconferences%2F…> Acceptance notices will be given on 28 February 2017. Extended abstracts of 1,500 words are due on 15 April 2017 to be sent digitalculture(a)kcl.ac.uk Dr Paolo Gerbaudo, Lecturer in Digital Culture and Society, Director of the Centre for Digital Culture King's College London, Room 224, 2nd Floor, 26-29 Drury Lane London WC2, England Phone: +44 (0)20 78481576

CFP: ICA Pre-conference "The challenges and promises of participatory policy-making: Communication practices, design considerations and socio-technical processes."
by Tanja Aitamurto 09 Jan '17

09 Jan '17

Hi all, We are organizing a pre-conference at ICA about participatory policy-making. Please see the call below, and let us know if you have any questions. best, Tanja CALL FOR PAPERS: 2017 International Communication Association Preconference *The challenges and promises of participatory policy-making: Communication practices, design considerations and socio-technical processes.* Hosted by: CalIT2, UC San Diego Supported by: CITRIS and the Banatao Institute, UC Berkeley Department of Communication, University of Illinois at Chicago Co-sponsored by: ICA Communication and Technology Division ICA Communication Law and Policy Division Global Internet Governance Academic Network (GigaNet) May 25, 2017 | San Diego, CA Room 5302, Atkinson Hall, UC San Diego *Extended abstracts due: January 18, 2017* *Final manuscripts due: April 24, 2017**Submit at: **http://tinyurl.com/ica2017policy <http://tinyurl.com/ica2017policy>* Tied to the ICA ’17 conference theme of interventions, this pre-conference asks to unpack how the socio-technical design of online civic engagement in policy-making may “alter and disrupt” democratic processes, practices, and occurrences. As such it explicitly deals with “communication practices that engage with a political event, social phenomena, industrial or socio-cultural practice.” The growth of online tools for civic engagement has ignited the imagination of researchers and practitioners of democratic participation. The internet harbored great promise for cheaper, broader and more inclusive public engagement in politics through self organization, dissemination of information, and transparency. It has also harbored a promise to disrupt the ways government interacts with its citizens through open data, provision of services or engagement of citizens in policy deliberation and crowdsourcing. Interactive, informed, and meaningful civic engagement in government decision-making processes has been viewed as the pinnacle of participatory government efforts. In the US, on his second day in the office, President Obama addressed senior staff and cabinet secretaries, urging them to “find new ways of tapping the knowledge and experience of ordinary Americans.” In Iceland, the government used crowdsourcing in drafting a new constitution. Locally, municipalities experiment with combining both online and offline methods to engage members of the public in participatory budgeting exercises. In the area of internet governance, remote participation has been an important component in efforts to develop effective arrangements for multistakeholder deliberations and decision-making. There is a variety of activities that fit under the broad umbrella of civic engagement or e-participation in policy-making. Those range from purely consultative engagements such as virtual town halls, through policy ideation and crowdsourcing, to binding decision making such as participatory budgeting, rulemaking or the development of internet standards. While significant focus has been placed (in both research and practice) on technological solutions involved in effective online civic engagement in participatory and direct democracy activities, less attention has been paid to the systemic understanding of how these technological solutions interact with the social, political, institutional, and educational arrangements of such engagements and their potential to disrupt and alter traditional democratic practices. This pre-conference focuses on unpacking the black box of online civic engagement for planning and policy-making activities from a systemic perspective. We invite competitive submissions of empirical analysis, case studies, and conceptual work that review the continuum of offline and online participation arrangements through a socio-technical systems lens—an interaction between human participants, institutional arrangements, and affordances of online participatory tools. We envision this workshop as a boundary searching—or boundary expanding—exercise that will tackle three major aspects of research of online civic engagement: (a) conceptual and theoretical work for describing and analyzing the socio-technical nature of online participatory policy-making tools, (b) methodological approaches to studying those phenomena with an emphasis on interdisciplinarity and system design, and (c) cases and datasets that invite and enable systemic analysis of both tools and social, political, institutional, and educational arrangements as they traverse both online and offline environments. Our goal is to engage with scholarship on digital divide, online cooperation, informed participation, psychology, internet governance, and computer mediated communication, in order to inform research on civic engagement that goes beyond the analysis of solely technical aspects of platform design and data mining. Theoretical areas and empirical contexts may include but are not limited to: - Conceptual and empirical work on participatory and crowdsourced policy-making. - Empirical case studies of the use of online ideation and participatory tools in rulemaking, participatory budgeting or internet governance deliberation. - Studies of controversies, successes, and failures in technology-driven participatory civic engagement. - Conceptual and empirical explorations of socio-technical considerations in the design of participatory platforms. - Analysis of interactions between offline and online processes and practices of policy-making. - Unpacking of tensions between expert and citizen knowledge and authority in policy deliberation. - Discussions of contextual factors that influence online civic engagement in policy-making (e.g., digital divide, literacy, motivation, political efficacy). *Submission details* At this time we invite authors to submit extended abstracts (800-1000 words) that describe the main thesis, research goals, and to the extent possible, the methodological background and findings of their paper. All extended abstracts must be uploaded through EasyChair at http://tinyurl.com/ica2017policy by 18 January 2017, with all identifying information removed. All contributions will be blindly peer-reviewed, and acceptance notifications will be sent out before the end of February 2015. Authors of the accepted abstracts will be asked to submit a full original manuscript of approximately 4000 to 8000 words, which has not been published elsewhere, by 1 May 2016. *Pre-conference logistics* The preconference will take place on Thursday, 25 May 2017 in Room 5302, Atkinson Hall, UC San Diego. Presenters are expected to register for the pre-conference, but registration is open to both presenters and non-presenters. At the moment, the registration fees stand at 25 USD. *Timeline* - Extended abstracts due by January 18 (via EasyChair) - Notifications sent by Feb. 24 - Full paper drafts due by May 1 *Organizing Committee* - Brandie Nonnecke, PhD, CITRIS and the Banatao Institute, UC Berkeley (Questions or concerns? Hi all, Beyond Meryl Streep calling out Trump’s mimicry of reporter Serge Kovaleski at last night’s Golden Globes, we need a nuanced discussion about the policies impacting people with disabilities, infringements upon their communication rights, and the implications for free speech in society writ large.
