Panel Session: Mediating everyday life: dwelling in a digital age Convenors - Christian Ritter (Istanbul Studies Center, Kader Has University) - Michael Humbracht (University of Surrey) Panel Short Abstract This panel addresses the interrelations between travel and dwelling practices among people on the move. We seek to better understand the mutual shaping of dwelling-in-travel and traveling-in-dwelling by comparing various ethnographic accounts of home-making practices. Panel Long Abstract This panel addresses the interplay between travel and dwelling practices among people on the move. The ubiquitous use of networked computers in homes transformed everyday lives. Digital technology has both opened up windows to entertainment, education, gossip, and networking while also ushering in new forms of surveillance that control everyday routines. Digital media connect remote people and places: we explore virtual travel and mooring in concert to unveil the everyday practices involved in the various uses of digital media at the intersections of traveling and dwelling. Specific everyday practices, tactics and histories revolve around dwelling and traveling (Clifford 1992). Dwelling-in-travel may include practices of homing that draw on decorative objects, cuisines, rituals and festivals. Travel-in-dwelling refers to the use of internet technologies, television, radio, phones and remote gift exchange while staying in a shelter. The increasing circulation of people, objects, ideas and capital are anchored in (ephemeral) dwelling practices in private and public settings. This panel focuses on these practices and materialities of dwelling. Hotels, tents, refugee camps, night trains and recreational vehicles contain multiple stories of delayed travel, aspired destinations, routes, despair and stillness, which ethnographers can bring to light. Instead of artificially separating dwelling-in-travel and traveling-in-dwell, this panel seeks to more comprehensively understand the mutual shaping of both sets of practices. We welcome ethnographic accounts and theoretical papers on mobile people, including expatriates, refugees, exiles, long-distance commuters and life style travellers. How do digital technologies transform their practices of home-making? Which dwelling practices do they develop? The paper proposal should include: - title - name/s and email addresses of author/s - short abstract of fewer than 300 characters - long abstract of fewer than 250 words

Four year research grants in Norway

Dear young scholars (40 or younger with a PhD in hand), Bergen Research Foundation and the University of Bergen invites applications for four year grants for young scholars. You must have a PhD completed, and you must be 40 years old or younger (this can be extended for documented parental leave or long-term illness). This is a four-year research-only position where the recipients of the grant lead a small project group (typically you would get a couple of PhD students to work on your project and whom you would supervise, plus you would have funding for workshops, travel, research stays abroad, bringing people in etc) and the grant *may* lead to a tenured full-time professorship, although there are conditions attached. We would love to have a BSF grant in Digital Culture, and I am sure there are excellent young scholars on this list who would be perfect candidates. If you would be interested in living in Norway, a country with free health care, free tuition, great parental leave and heavily subsidised childcare, and have an idea for a research project that might fit in this scheme, please get in touch with me at jill.walker.rettberg(a)uib.no<mailto:jill.walker.rettberg@uib.no>. It does require you to have (or be able to develop before the deadline) a well-worked out research project plan and to have a CV that shows you are an excellent young scholar with promise. Rob Digitally dwelling: the challenges of digital ethnology and folklore and the methods to overcome them What does it mean to "dwell" in a digital community? Or inhabit a network location? Do we dwell together as we access different apps on the bus to work? Or do we dwell together in the synthetic spaces inside a virtual reality helmet? Participants in this panel will offer specific cases of challenges they faced dwelling in digital cultures and explore methodical fixes that attempt to address them. The pace at which the manifold uses of the internet and of other digital and mobile technologies are constantly evolving means that the nature of the digital worlds we inhabit together are always changing. In this environment of constant change, the researcher is always being presented with new challenges to the perspectives, methods and tools they have used before. The omnipresence and intensification of the digital challenge our perceptions of localities, presence and encounters. As a consequence, methods for online research need to redefine concepts such as the "field" and fieldwork, participant observation, interaction, etc. This panel will investigate methods in research on digital culture, digital practices and the impact and the implications of the digital in our lives by asking participants to present specific cases of problems they have faced in their digital research and the fixes they developed to address whether successful or not! ESRC-funded PhD studentship on the ‘Relating to Data through Visualisation’ PhD Network

The PhD studentship is funded by the ESRC through the White Rose Doctoral Training Centre (WRDTC). The network consists of three PhD projects: · *Developing** visualisation** literacy* (based at The University of Sheffield) · *Engaging diverse users in** visualisation** design and evaluation* (based at The University of York) · *Measuring visualisation engagement* (based at The University of Leeds) We are seeking to recruit a student for the third project, *Measuring Visualisation Engagement* (based at The University of Leeds). The project will build on Seeing Data research (seeingdata.org) which experimented with capturing responses to visualisations through automated processes ( http://seeingdata.org/understandingdata-visualisations/ rate-these-visualisations/). The project will advance these experiments to develop an open source application which aims to support visualisation evaluation. Through this process, it will address questions relating to how data-generating systems make and shape the data that they produce and the role of measurement in contemporary culture.
