This year’s conference asks how contexts affect how we design communication experiences. For example, How have communication design practices evolved to meet the needs of new contexts/audiences? How has UX design evolved to respond to technology used in multiple contexts? How does mobile use (checking mobile devices while riding in a car, cooking dinner, walking around town, etc.) affect how we communicate and use information? Industry and academic researchers (including graduate and undergraduate students) are encouraged to submit research papers, experience reports, and posters. Contributions may include studies of design processes, research methods, pedagogical practices, deployment analyses, and situated-use studies related to the design and use of communication systems and artifacts. SIGDOC will be located in Arlington, Virginia, right outside Washington, DC September 21-23, 2016. *Submission process* First, short proposals (500 words) will be submitted for review. Once a proposal is reviewed and accepted, the author(s) will submit either: · a full-length paper (research and technical papers or experience reports; final papers are not to exceed 10 pages), or · an extended abstract (posters and panels; final abstracts are not to exceed 6 pages). The full-length papers and extended abstracts will then be reviewed, sent back to the authors for final edits and ACM formatting, and resubmitted as “camera-ready” submissions. Papers and extended abstracts will be published in the Conference Proceedings and in the ACM Digital Library. Full CFP may be found at http://sigdoc.acm.org/conference/2016/call-for-papers/ *Important Dates* The timeline for the conference is as follows: · January 11, 2016: Proposal system open for submissions · February 1 extended to February 8, 2016: Research and technical paper, Experience report, Poster, Panel, and Workshop proposals due by 11:59 EST. · February 29, 2016: Proposal reviews completed. · April 18, 2016: Research and technical papers, Experience reports, Posters, and Panel/extended abstracts due. · June 6, 2016: Full-length reviews completed. · July 11, 2016: “Camera-ready” paper/extended abstract revisions and final posters due. Last reminder - Call for Papers: Network Standards and Culture (AOIR 2016 Panel)
by Elinor Carmi 01 Feb '16

01 Feb '16

Hi everyone, This is a last reminder calling panelists for an #AOIR2016 panel Robert W. Gehl and I are organizing on the relationship between network standards and culture. By 'standards' we (broadly) mean technical rules, laws, and norms of technical features/infrastructure/objects related to media technologies, that are constructed by various individual/private/government/NGO actors. We are particularly interested in papers that articulate these rules with cultural practices within and through digital media. To be considered for this panel, we would need the AOIR-standard 1200-word abstract by *February 5, 2016* sent to e.carmi(a)gold.ac.uk. We will notify our selected panelists by February 20 with any revisions required ahead of the AOIR deadline of March 1. Best regards, Elinor Carmi Robert W. Gehl

Request for support in reaching audience for mini-surveys
by Ansgar Koene 01 Feb '16

01 Feb '16

For the next couple of weeks we are running a Twitter campaign to increase awareness and collect public opinions regarding the use of digital personal data. The campaign consists of daily Tweets mentioning an instance of reported data usage where there were concerns about the level of informed consent that was involved. Each Tweet contains a link to a mini-survey to ask people's opinion regarding that use of data. Once we receive ten or more responses the outcomes of each mini-survey will be published/updated on our blog site. In order to reach a broad public I would like to ask if Twitter users on the list would be willing to help us spread the tweets to potentially interested publics. For this campaign we are using the hashtag #AnalyzeMyData<https://twitter.com/hashtag/AnalyzeMyData?src=hash>. More information about this campaign is available at: http://casma.wp.horizon.ac.uk/casma-projects/ccasmd/consent-to-analyzemydat… Thank for your support, Ansgar Dr. Ansgar Koene CaSMa - Citizen centric approaches to social media analysis Horizon Digital Economy Research Institute University of Nottingham https://sites.google.com/site/arkoene/ http://casma.wp.horizon.ac.uk/ http://www.horizon.ac.uk/ This message and any attachment are intended solely for the addressee and may contain confidential information. Deadline Extended to April 1st: Special issue on “Digital Evidence” for “Philosophy & Technology”
by Judith Simon 01 Feb '16

01 Feb '16

Dear colleagues, the deadline for the submission of papers for our special issue on “Digital Evidence” for the journal “Philosophy & Technology” has been extended to APRIL 1st 2016. A pdf-version of the cfp is also available here: http://www.shannonvallor.net/uploads/4/4/8/0/44807815/digitalevidencecfp.pdf <http://www.shannonvallor.net/uploads/4/4/8/0/44807815/digitalevidencecfp.pdf> With best wishes, Judith Simon & Shannon Vallor --------------------------- Call for Papers for Philosophy and Technology’s special issue on Digital Evidence GUEST EDITORS Judith Simon (IT University Copenhagen & University of Vienna) Shannon Vallor (Santa Clara University) INTRODUCTION Digital technologies of the 21st century are profoundly transforming the nature of evidence and evidential practices in a wide range of domains, including science, medicine, law, education, journalism, government, public policy and global, national and domestic security. These changes call for rigorous analysis and critical reflection across a range of related topics and disciplines. The effects and uses are as diverse as the technologies themselves. The much-heralded power of “Big Data” on an unprecedented scale is radically changing how, and from where, social science researchers, marketers and insurers draw their evidence of human behavior, desires and attitudes. Digital neuroimaging technologies are reshaping norms of evidence in the courtroom, in research labs and in doctors’ offices. Varied forms of drone imaging affect how military pilots and intelligence agencies identify and even define legitimate targets, how archeologists, marine biologists, geologists and conservation scientists understand and measure natural phenomena, and how local law enforcement agencies perceive crime and social unrest. Cellphone cameras, body cameras, webcams and hacked ‘data dumps’ have radically changed how, and what, the public sees and knows. Future innovations in digital evidence promise to destabilize traditional evidential norms and practices even further. The philosophical questions raised by such transformations are many. What if any conceptual shifts in traditional metaphysics and epistemology do these new evidential practices suggest? Are new ontologies of evidence, or new standards of justified belief and knowledge, needed to account for them? What normative considerations (epistemic, political, ethical or legal), should be brought to bear upon these developments? How do new digital technologies condition the relationship between evidence, knowledge, belief and trust? How do these changes affect our understanding of scientific inquiry and explanation, or the role of evidential practices in human cognition, affectivity and action? How are these technologies impacting the distribution of the social and political power of evidence? These are just a few of the critical questions that new and emerging evidential practices invite us to ask. TOPICS We solicit the submission of papers that investigate the way in which new and emerging digital technologies are changing evidential norms and practices, within any relevant practical context or contexts (e.g. natural or social science, law, journalism, public policy, medicine, security or intelligence, etc). While the motivating questions should be of a philosophical nature, we welcome submissions from any discipline and/or subdiscipline (for example: philosophy/sociology of science, ethics, metaphysics, epistemology, logic, law, psychology, media studies, criminal justice, political philosophy/science, and so on.) Topics of special interest include: the impact of digital evidence on scientific research standards and practices; on the role of expertise; on notions of justification, confirmation and reasonable belief; on epistemic assessments of trust, reliability, objectivity and/or truth; on the cultivation of intellectual or moral virtues; on the relationship between modes of perception, affect, reflection and judgment; on individual, group and institutional practices of deliberation, verification and decision; or on the collection, dissemination, integrity and authority of information. TIMETABLE April 1, 2016: Deadline for paper submissions June 1, 2016: Deadline reviews papers July 1, 2016: Deadline revised papers 2016: Publication of the special issue SUBMISSION DETAILS To submit a paper for this special issue, authors should go to the journal’s Editorial Manager http://www.editorialmanager.com/phte/ <http://www.editorialmanager.com/phte/> The author (or a corresponding author for each submission in case of co- authored papers) must register into EM. The author must then select the special article type: "DIGITAL EVIDENCE” from the selection provided in the submission process. This is needed in order to assign the submissions to the Guest Editors. Submissions will then be assessed according to the following procedure: New Submission => Journal Editorial Office => Guest Editor(s) => Reviewers => Reviewers’ Recommendations => Guest Editor(s)’ Recommendation => Editor-in-Chief’s Final Decision => Author Notification of the Decision. The process will be reiterated in case of requests for revisions. CALL FOR PAPERS
by Yogesh K. Dwivedi 31 Jan '16

31 Jan '16

*The 15th IFIP Conference on e-Business, e-Services and e-Society (**I3E 2016)* *“**Social Media: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly!**”* *http://www.swansea.ac.uk/som/i3e2016/ <http://www.swansea.ac.uk/som/i3e2016/> * *13-15 September 2016* *Swansea, United Kingdom* The ubiquity of social media has had a profound effect on the way we communicate and is of significant importance to society and business. Social media tools have helped break down geographical barriers that once restricted communication and have led to an explosion of e-participation, virtual presence, and online communities. Professional benefits of social media include sharing of information, publicity, and giving and receiving support and advice. Consumers have become increasingly empowered to exert an influence on brands through online communities and businesses are able to acquire rapid feedback and garner insight into individual preferences without observer effects. Analysis of social media content via automated techniques and systems can also help to safeguard society from organized crime but such uses remain a delicate issue. With seemingly endless benefits it is easy to overlook the disadvantages of social media, which are an increasingly important consideration as social media platforms continue to proliferate. Social media has facilitated a loss of ownership and control of content as private, public and institutional domains increasingly overlap. There is a need for careful balancing of professionalism and freedom of speech, to ensure that posts do not cause offence or harm reputations. Other drawbacks include time pressure, plagiarism, misrepresentation, addiction, and negative psychological consequences. While providing a means to protect public safety, social media also provides a means of threatening it and enabling new forms of cyber-crime. This conference aims to bring together a variety of disciplines and a community for the advancement of knowledge regarding the adoption, use, impact, and potential of social media. To achieve this goal, we invite researchers and practitioners to present their ideas and findings at the 15th IFIP Conference on e-Business, e-Services, and e-Society to be held at Swansea University, UK in 2016. Theoretical and empirical papers employing quantitative, qualitative, and/or critical methods are welcomed. *Topics of submission *may include but are not limited to: · Adoption and diffusion of social media · Blogging and microblogging · Challenges of social media · Citizen participation via social media · Collaboration and knowledge management · Content and information analysis · Corporate social networks · Crisis management enabled by social media · Crowdsourcing · Cyberbullying and trolling · Definition and taxonomy of different types of social media · Disaster prevention using social media · Marketing campaigns · Disruption as a result of social media · Economic and social effects of social media · Effects of social media on consumer choice · Ethical issues relating to social media · Impact of social media on consumer behaviour · Impact of social media on marketing strategy · Innovation through social media · Managing presence and reputation on social media · Personnel recruitment/management · Policy challenges · Political and social · Privacy issues with social media · Rigour in social media research · Sentiment analysis · Social media and policy · Social media and public governance · Social media data mining, analytics and intelligence · Social media for B2B marketing · Social media research and theory development · Social media strategy and integration · Social media to support education · Social media, product innovation, and product life cycle · Social media transparency, openness, and anti-corruption · The future (good/bad/ugly) of social media *LOCATION* The 15th IFIP Conference will be held at Swansea University’s brand new Bay Campus located on the majestic sweep of Swansea Bay and within easy reach of the vibrant City Centre. As an industrial powerhouse of the 19th century, Swansea and the surrounding areas are rich in history which can be explored in a number of local museums. To the west of the City is the Gower Peninsula where you can find Rhossili Bay voted Britain’s Best Beach and 9th best in the world by TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice. *IMPORTANT DATES* - Paper Submission: *15 March 2016* - Authors Notification: *30 April 2016* - Early Bird Registration: *30 May 2016* - Conference dates: *13 to 15 September 2016* *PAPER SUBMISSION AND PROCEEDINGS * Authors should submit (*Submission website:* https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=i3e2016) original, unpublished research papers. All accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. Submissions should not be under consideration for any other conference or journal outlet. The Conference Co-Chair, Professor Yogesh K. publication platform?
by Marina Boechat 31 Jan '16

31 Jan '16

Dear colleagues, As part of my thesis research, I have made a series of interviews with a few european researchers in the field of digital humanities (especially sociology, design and media studies), about the uses of visualisation and visual data analysis in digital research methods and to public debate. I think these interviews could be an interesting read for people who work in similar subjects. So, now that I've defended the thesis, it could be nice to publish them in small and free e-book. Do you suggest any specific publishing or distributing platform? Or should I just make a small site and offer the files in different versions for download? I will appreciate any suggestions or ideas. Thanks! Best regards, Marina Boechat.
