CfP: CSCW 2016, San Francisco CA, Workshop on Social Signaling Theory, Join Us!
by Amirah Majid 17 Dec '15

17 Dec '15

Call for Workshop Participation! Deadline Extended!! Unpacking Social Signaling Theory for Social Computing Systems Analysis and Design @ CSCW 2016 Social signaling theory (SST) is an analytical approach for interpreting interactions in social settings that are not ostensibly explicit. Historically, SST has been used to analyze behaviors in domains such as biology, economics, anthropology and sociology. Using SST as an approach for analyzing human behavior in the broad domain of social computing systems has been growing in many directions. Researchers have been using SST to understand how people assess the reliability of profile data in situations such as selecting experts, seeking romantic encounters, joining niche communities, or generally making sense of online social settings. Some possible questions we might think about for this workshop include: • Relationships: How does social signaling theory complement existing theories used for studying social computing systems? • Applications: What types of questions about social computing systems cannot currently be answered from an SST stance? • Interventions: How can SST be leveraged to facilitate the design of next generation social computing systems? The workshop will be active and interactive. Through a variety of creative activities and lively discussions, we will begin to unpack SST, map how it is currently being used in research, and investigate the potential for future exploration. We are planning a number of interesting activities and opportunities for discussion. Participants will be selected based on interest in the topic, demonstrated through extended abstracts submitted prior to the workshop. We have framed some possible motivating questions above. You might choose to frame your submission around one of those topics. However, alternative submission topics that would inform the workshop discussion include describing an application of SST in a setting, system designs which attempt to apply SST, or evaluations of SST as applied. We are also thrilled to accept papers which approach SST as a theoretical stance, an empirical study, or use it in a clearly framed research design. Papers will be selected based on a combination of quality and to gather a variety of perspectives. Submissions will be due December 19, 2015 For more information visit the workshop website: http://courses.washington.edu/sstwks16/ Details on the submission requirements can be found from the workshop website. -- A. Dynamics of Virtual Work Book Series Launch University of Westminster 309 Regent Street, W1B 2HW, London January 21, 2016, 18:00-20:00 http://www.westminster.ac.uk/camri/events/dynamics-of-virtual-work Registration: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/dynamics-of-virtual-work-tickets-19751489236 Sponsored by the University of Westminster’s Communications and Media Research Institute (CAMRI), the University of Hertfordshire and Palgrave MacMillan, this event will launch an important new book series. The Dynamics of Virtual Work series, is edited by Ursula Huws, Professor of Labour and Globalization at the University of Hertfordshire and Rosalind Gill, Professor of Cultural and Social Analysis at City University, this series was developed under the auspices of COST Action IS 1202. Technological change has transformed where people work, when, how and with whom. Digitisation of information has altered labour processes out of all recognition whilst telecommunications have enabled jobs to be relocated globally. ICTs have also enabled the creation of entirely new types of 'digital' or 'virtual' labour, both paid and unpaid, shifting the borderline between 'play' and 'work' and creating new types of unpaid labour connected with the consumption and co-creation of goods and services. Aspects of these changes have been studied separately by many different academic experts however up till now a cohesive overarching analytical framework has been lacking. Drawing on a major, high-profile COST Action (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) Dynamics of Virtual Work, this series will bring together leading international experts from a wide range of disciplines including political economy, labour sociology, economic geography, communications studies, technology, gender studies, social psychology, organisation studies, industrial relations and development studies to explore the transformation of work and labour in the Internet Age. The series will allow researchers to speak across disciplinary boundaries, national borders, theoretical and political vocabularies, and different languages to understand and make sense of contemporary transformations in work and social life more broadly. The first two volumes in the series are already published, with more in the pipeline. Already Published Digital Labour and Prosumer Capitalism – edited by Olivier Frayssé and Mathieu O'Neil Reconsidering Value and Labour in the Digital Age – edited by Eran Fisher and Christian Fuchs The published books will be on sale at the event at a 50% discount and the bookseller will accept cash in British pounds only.*

ICA Young Scholars Preconference "Communicating the Power of Visuals" (Kyushu Sangyo University, Fukuoka, Japan, 9 June 2016)
by Giorgia Aiello 17 Dec '15

17 Dec '15

Call for Papers Communicating the Power of Visuals ICA Young Scholars Preconference on Conceptualizing and Communicating Visual Communication Research Projects Venue: Kyushu Sangyo University (Fukuoka, Japan) Date: 9 June 2016 Sponsored by: Kyushu Sangyo University (Fukuoka, Japan), ICA Visual Communication Studies Division, Hans-Bredow-Institut for Media Research at the University of Hamburg (Germany) Organizers Michael Grimm (Hans-Bredow-Institut for Media Research at the University of Hamburg, Germany) Akira Sano (Kyushu Sangyo University, Fukuoka, Japan) Allison Kwesell (International Christian University, Tokyo, Japan) Giorgia Aiello (University of Leeds, UK) Rationale Mediated images as means of communication are associated with specific characteristics, such as their holistic nature and analogical quality, which make visual communication especially powerful. But these characteristics also come with some particular pitfalls when it comes to conceptualizing visual communication scholarship and to communicating both methods and results, especially for young scholars who deal with mediated images in their first comprehensive research projects. In conceptualizing visual communication research projects, young scholars must tackle pragmatic questions, such as how to access the visuals under study and how to make the analytical process as adequate and transparent as possible. But they also have to highlight the particular insights that the study of visuals can contribute to any given project. In communicating visual communication research projects, young scholars are not only confronted with the challenges of the material under study (e.g.: How to present videos in presentations and publications? What are the legal standards for the use of mediated images in presentations and publications?). They also have to face structural aspects of the scientific community, since young scholars who study mediated images are scattered across ICA divisions and interest groups and thus primarily interact with scholars for whom visual communication is not a primary interest or is even “exotic”, so that young scholars usually have to go the extra mile in legitimizing the visual aspects of their research projects. Aims This one-day preconference will therefore set out to bring together young scholars – i.e. both current PhD students and early career postdoctoral researchers – from all ICA divisions and interest groups who focus on visual images in their research projects. The event aims to address the needs of these young scholars from different sub-fields in media and communication studies by: 1) summarizing key challenges in conceptualizing and communicating visual communication research projects; 2) demonstrating some of the most significant ways in which the study of visual images contributes, both theoretically and methodologically, to research from across ICA divisions and interest groups; 3) providing strategies for presenting and communicating research projects to cross-divisional, cross-disciplinary academic audiences and for making use of the specific power of visuals in presenting visual communication research projects; 4) providing a forum for cross-divisional networking between young and senior scholars; and 5) providing feedback on young scholars’ research projects (e.g. in order to polish their work for publication). Format This event follows the very successful cross-divisional ICA Young Scholars Preconference on Visual Methods<http://www.visualmethods.net> in San Juan 2015, which featured workshop sessions with 34 young scholars from seven countries and 11 senior experts from five countries. This year’s preconference will follow a similar format, but it will focus on a new, though complementary, set of issues and questions. First, an opening keynote by distinguished visual communication expert David Perlmutter will give an overview of key issues in conceptualizing and communicating visual communication research projects. Second, in poster sessions, young scholars will have the opportunity to present their research projects, discuss their challenges in conceptualizing and communicating their projects with other participants, network with peers, and receive substantial feedback on their projects from experienced senior scholars. All young and senior scholars will participate in the poster sessions, a format that provides a practice-oriented overview of a range of approaches to visual communication studies and common challenges. Third, in subsequent parallel expert sessions, young scholars with methodologically and/or thematically related research projects will be grouped together and matched with senior scholars whose expertise matches their areas of research. The small groups will then discuss the challenges in conceptualizing and communicating visual research projects and possible solution strategies based on the research projects presented in the posters. Finally, in a closing plenary, we will summarize key insights originating from discussions in the expert sessions and, together with all participants, we will discuss ideas and plans for future networking and research events. Senior Experts Several senior scholars with extensive experience in different areas of visual communication research will participate in the preconference. The range of approaches and perspectives provided by senior scholars will offer the best fit for each young scholar’s research interests and needs. Among the confirmed senior experts are: * Giorgia Aiello<http://media.leeds.ac.uk/people/giorgia-aiello/> (University of Leeds, UK) * Kari Andén-Papadopoulos<http://www.ims.su.se/forskning/forskningsomr%C3%A5den/journalistik-medier-o…> (Stockholm University, Sweden) * Lilie Chouliaraki<http://www.lse.ac.uk/media@lse/whosWho/AcademicStaff/LilieChouliaraki.aspx> (London School of Economics and Political Science, UK) * Paolo Favero<https://www.uantwerpen.be/en/staff/paolo-favero/> (University of Antwerp, Belgium) * Stephanie Geise<https://www.uni-erfurt.de/kommunikationswissenschaft/personen/personenueber…> (University of Erfurt, Germany) * Laurie Gries<http://comm.colorado.edu/people/faculty/laurie-gries/> (University of Colorado, USA) * Katy Parry<http://media.leeds.ac.uk/people/katy-parry/> (University of Leeds, UK) * Luc Pauwels<https://www.uantwerpen.be/en/staff/luc-pauwels/> (University of Antwerp, Belgium) * David Perlmutter<http://www.depts.ttu.edu/comc/utilities/get_biog.php?record=208> (Texas Tech University, USA) * Catherine Preston<https://film.ku.edu/catherine-preston> (University of Kansas, USA) Submissions We invite young scholars from all ICA divisions and interest groups to submit extended abstracts on both completed and ongoing projects. We welcome submissions on all aspects of the visual communication process (production context, media context, reception context) and on all visual methods, as well as on a broad range of topics, such as visual political communication, visual science and health communication, visual popular communication etc. Extended abstracts should briefly summarize relevance, theory, methods and results (where applicable), and strongly focus on the discussion of the challenges in conceptualizing the visual aspects of the project and communicating it to other researchers. Extended abstracts should be limited to a maximum of 1,000 words (double-spaced; illustrations, tables and references do not count against this total of words). Please remove all identifying information from the document and include a separate title page indicating the name(s) of the author(s), the affiliation(s) of the author(s), the title of the project, and the status quo of the project (e.g. completed project, work in progress). Please send your submissions via e-mail to m.grimm(a)hans-bredow-institut.de<mailto:m.grimm@hans-bredow-institut.de> no later than 29 January 2016. Decisions will be made by 29 February 2016. The preconference will be open to a maximum of 40 young scholars. Participants will be selected based on the quality of their extended abstracts. In the review process, we will also consider that a reasonable range of topics will be covered by the poster presentations and that participants can be grouped in clusters with similar interests. Venue The preconference will be hosted on the campus of Kyushu Sangyo University<http://www.kyusan-u.ac.jp/E/> in Fukuoka. Transportation from the main conference hotel to the university campus and vice versa will be provided for all participants with a chartered bus (about 15-30 minutes each way). Izmir: Mapping Alternative Routes out of Capitalism 8 Jan deadline.
by Phoebe Moore 17 Dec '15

17 Dec '15

See below a call for panels and papers for a section in the EISA conference, Izmir, Turkey, 7-10 September 2016. The section seeks panels and papers on alternatives to capitalism, and how we might achieve them, both within the capitalist present and on the route to a post-capitalist society. We welcome papers on explicit contestation of capitalism through varyingly autonomous forms of struggle as well as futurist, anti-proprietary or gift culture movements, survivalism, cooperatives, DIY culture, permaculture, experimentation with cybernetics and post-humanist ideals, as well as revived institutional interests in wellbeing. The deadline for proposals is 8 January 2016 and must be done online through the EISA conference tool website - https://www.conftool.pro/paneuropean2016/ Please feel free to contact us first to discuss informally ahead of submitting proposals: David Bailey (d.j.bailey(a)bham.ac.uk) and Phoebe Moore (p.moore(a)mdx.ac.uk) Section title: Mapping Alternative Routes out of Capitalism The critical study of global capitalism and the hegemony of neoliberalism are both central to the study of international relations and international political economy. Research has focused less, however, on questioning how (if at all) we might go beyond capitalism. This is despite global capitalism remaining dangerously unstable, not least because the global economic crisis that began in 2008 continues to linger without any obvious resolution to it. The aim of this section, therefore, is to bring together those with an interest in the rise of alternatives at varied positions along the ideological spectrum; mapping, studying, theorising, highlighting, judging and assessing practices which form contemporary alternatives to, and problems for, global capitalism. This includes pathways in local, regional and global contexts. In particular, we note two emerging types of response, each of which expose the ever-present possibility and presence of sometimes surprising and contradictory routes outside of capitalism, as well as raising the question of technology in contemporary social change. On the one hand, we see various modified projects seeking alternative routes to social justice and rights: futurist, anti-proprietary or gift culture movements, survivalism, cooperatives, DIY culture, permaculture, experimentation with cybernetics and post-humanist ideals, as well as revived institutional interests in wellbeing. On the other hand, we see the explicit contestation of capitalism through varyingly autonomous forms of struggle: Occupy, the indignados, the Greek grassroots projects, Rojava, and, then, the electoral manifestation of some of these trends within Syriza, Podemos, Barcelona en Comú, and Jeremy Corbyn. Section convenors: David Bailey (d.j.bailey(a)bham.ac.uk) and Phoebe Moore ( p.moore(a)mdx.ac.uk) Submissions to be made here: https://www.conftool.pro/paneuropean2016/ Deadline for submissions: 8 January 2016 Conference website and more details: www.paneuropeanconference.org/2016 Dr Phoebe V Moore Personal email pvm.doc(a)gmail.com Work email p.moore(a)mdx.ac.uk Twitter phoebemoore Profile http://www.mdx.ac.uk/aboutus/staffdirectory/phoebe-moore.aspx Biolog http://phoebevmoore.wordpress.com/

Call for Papers: Digital Methodologies – Beyond Big & Small Data
by Mark Carrigan 17 Dec '15

17 Dec '15

Digital Methodologies: Beyond Big & Small Data 9th International Conference on Social Science Methodology (RC33) September 11th – 16th, 2016, University of Leicester (http://www.le.ac.uk/) Session Organizer Christian Bokhove, University of Southampton, United Kingdom, C.Bokhove(a)soton.ac.uk Mark Carrigan, University of Warwick, United Kingdom, mark(a)markcarrigan.net Sarah Lewthwaite, University of Southampton, United Kingdom, s.e.lewthwaite(a)southampton.ac.uk <selewthwaite(a)gmail.com>Richard Wiggins, Institute of Education, United Kingdom r.wiggins(a)ioe.ac.uk Session Abstract In recent years the challenge of Big Data has become a dominant theme within discussions of social science methodology. But these debates have too often been played out within a limited methodological frame of reference, in which the virtues and vices of Big Data are counterpoised or the call is made to supplement Big Data with Small Data. This stream will critically analyse this methodological framing of Big Data, its strengths and limitations, with a view to developing digital methodologies which move beyond Big Data and Small Data. In doing so, we hope the stream will also addressed a broad range of related issues, such as: - The methodological challenge of big data and digital social research - The practical challenges of mixed methods approaches to digital social research - The role of theoretical ideas in digital methodologies - The relationship between Virtual Methods, Digital Methods, Technology Enhanced Methods etc. - The methodological utility of data mining and the dangers of data fishing - The continued utility of sampling in digital social research, for example with regard to collection methods involving Amazon’s Mechanical Turk and Twitter streams. - What are the ethical and social implications of linking and accessing administrative data? - What are the implications for epistemologies, data collection and analysis of the pace of change in which social life is increasingly played out online? The stream seeks to incorporate technical issues pertaining to digital methods into a broader discussion of the impact of digital methodologies. We are particularly keen to receive papers that reflect upon and bridge existing methods and draw out a vision for the future of social science research and practice. The session is organised jointly between the *Independent Social Research Foundation’s* *Digital Social Science Forum* and the *International Journal of Social Research Methodology*. DEADLINE: 21st January, 2016 Submission Instructions: 1. Submissions must be made using the Precision Conference System (PCS). We encourage authors strongly to submit a video figure to support and accompany their submission. The committee will choose the best to be part of a plenary session at the conference. WORKS-IN-PROGRESS (6 pages in ACM SIGCHI Extended Abstract format excluding references, poster presentation at the conference) Works-in-progress provide a unique opportunity for late-breaking results to be presented in a poster format. Accepted submissions will be presented as a poster at the conference. Posters papers will be lightly peer-reviewed and archived in the proceedings planned to be published in the ACM digital library. We encourage authors to submit a video figure to support their submission, and the committee will choose the best videos to be part of a plenary session at the conference. CHI PLAY STUDENT GAME COMPETITION (6 pages in ACM SIGCHI Extended Abstract format excluding references, interactive demonstration at the conference) The CHI PLAY Student Game Competition will provide a unique opportunity for students to showcase their interactive play systems and designs. Students will need to submit a video of their game as well as proof of student status (full-time or part-time, all levels up to Ph.D.). A jury panel will nominate the best submissions for an interactive presentation at the conference, where a panel of experts choose the winners. WORKSHOPS (6 pages in ACM SIGCHI Extended Abstract format, workshop at the conference) Workshops allow conference participants that share a common interest to deepen their knowledge and meet in an interactive hands-on learning and discussion environment. They provide great opportunities for community-building at CHI PLAY. Workshops should focus on a theme in one of CHI PLAY’s core areas mentioned above. We especially welcome workshops that bridge the gap between practitioner and researcher knowledge or between communities. Workshops should provide novel perspectives and generate ideas about player-computer interaction. If you are passionate about this field, please consider organizing a workshop. Workshops can independently from the conference result in special issues of journals, wikis, websites, or books. COURSES (4 pages in ACM SIGCHI format, course at the conference) Courses at CHI PLAY should allow participants to learn new hands-on knowledge about player-game interaction, development and evaluation. They are great opportunities for industry pros to teach their knowledge to an interested audience and allow interdisciplinary knowledge development between practitioners and researchers. If you work in game development and are eager to teach a workshop at CHI PLAY, we look forward to your submission. DEMOS/PLAY CHI PLAY offers a chance for game developers and researchers to showcase their commercial game or to deploy multiplayer social games at the conference. Please contact the DEMOS/PLAY chairs if you are interested in showcasing your game during the conference breaks. REVIEW PROCESS: All PAPERS We have selected a program committee of experts in human-computer interaction and game research to lead the formal review process. Once your paper is submitted as a blind manuscript in the correct format, our program committee and external reviewers will provide at least 3 high quality reviews (at least two from our PC members). The Associate Chair (AC) will contribute their own opinion about the paper and summarize the individual reviews, meta-reviewing the paper and providing advice to the authors regarding the rebuttal. A rebuttal is a chance to clarify any misconceptions that the reviewers might have about the paper. This is an opportunity for authors to rebut factual error in reviews or to answer questions asked by reviewers. Rebuttals are required to be written in a very short timeframe after the reviews are sent out. CHI PLAY rebuttals are 2500 characters in length. The PC and conference chairs will review and discuss all submitted rebuttals. The papers chairs will then deliberate in close communication with the committee members about the acceptance of papers. Authors will then be recommended to make certain changes before the camera-ready submission and acceptance might be tentative until those changes are included. At least one author of the paper must register for the conference and present the paper at the conference. CONFERENCE COMMITTEE CONFERENCE CHAIR Anna Cox, University College London, UK Zachary O. 16 Dec '15

Hi all Please note EXTENDED DEADLINE JANUARY 15th. Seasons Greetings, Nancy. Popular Communication: The International Journal of Media and Culture Special Issue: Self-(Re)presentation Now Guest Editor: Nancy Thumim *Call for Papers* The editors of Popular Communication: The International Journal of Media and Culture invite submissions for a special issue on the topic of Self-(Re)presentation. We welcome critical approaches in new media, film, television and cultural studies; media and communication studies; museum studies and allied fields. We seek manuscripts that examine the politics, practices and aesthetics of self-(re)presentation and that engage critically with questions of conceptualization and methodology. >From a time when self-(re)presentation was arguably a marginal, often political, practice at the edges of media culture, we are at a moment in media and cultural spaces in diverse local and national contexts where we are seeing: 1) An explosion of individual and group self-(re)presentations; 2) an explosion of popular and media discussion about the practice, possibilities and promise for presenting and representing the self and others; 3) a corresponding explosion of academic research tackling different kinds of presentations, performances and representations of individual selves and communities. This special issue of Popular Communication: The International Journal of Media and Culture aims to showcase intersecting, contradictory, complementary and critical approaches to self-(re)presentation. We are aiming for a multi-disciplinary issue that will showcase excellent scholarship on self-(re)presentation with the aim of highlighting key areas of debate and contention in research that invokes the concept of self-(re)presentation. We welcome proposals for articles addressing topics including (but not limited to) the following: ·Questions of methodology and conceptualisation of self-(re)presentation ·Historical approaches to self-(re)presentation ·Visual studies of self-(re)presentations ·Audiences for self-(re)presentations ·Practices and uses of self-(re)presentation by particular individuals, groups and communities ·The relationship of audio visual and digital self-(re)presentation to political representation and questions of citizenship ·Self-(re)presentation and Big Data ·Self-(re)presentation, surveillance and sousveillance ·Selfies ·Self-(re)presentational photography and film making as political practice for groups and communities ·Community Media and self-(re)presentation ·Self-(re)presentation and documentary ·Self-(re)presentation and photography ·Invited, facilitated and co-produced self-(re)presentation ·Digital storytelling Submitted papers should be *6,000 -7,000 words* in length (inclusive of all elements). Thedeadline for submission is *15 JANUARY 2016*.
