For example, Alibaba’s initial public offering in 2014 was ranked world’s biggest at $25 Billion; Wechat, the fastest rising social media app developed by Tencent, achieved a user base of 440 million within four years of its release. By February 2015, Chinese Internet users have reached 641 million, more than double the number of users in the U.S. Numbers aside, however, there have not been much academic research on the regulatory context, the political and economic dynamics, as well as the broader implications at both domestic and global levels of such fast-pace development. For instance, there are increasing efforts from the Chinese government and elites to articulate alternative frameworks over the global governance of the Internet and new media industries. This preconference intends to serve as a platform to facilitate dialogues around *the political, the economic, the institutional and the policy aspects* of media industries in China, in view of the rapid development of digital media. But this is not just about having ‘China experts’ analyzing Chinese companies or Chinese policies. We are keen to move beyond the ‘China exceptionalism” by taking *an explicitly global and comparative perspective*. For one thing, the ownership structure and the business practices of Chinese digital media companies are intricately related to global capitalism in general. For another, Chinese information technology companies, such as Baidu, Alibaba, ZTE and Huawei, are aggressively expanding their businesses overseas, especially in Africa and South East Asia, with varied degrees of success. Last but not the least, through platforms like the National Office for Internet and Information, and channels like the Sino-US Internet Forum, the Chinese authorities are actively participating in the construction of international and global policy frames concerning the future development of digital media industries. With the global reach of Chinese IT companies and the international ambition of Chinese government, it is imperative to understand how the new developments in Chinese digital media industries, are reconfiguring the politics and the economics of information and communication technologies (ICTs). Moreover, it is important to understand how traditional media such as mainstream newspapers respond to such changes and incorporate digitalization into their own industry plans. This preconference aims to invite scholars from all over the world to tackle the issue, primarily using China as a context in which innovative research questions and methods can be applied. We are particularly interested in papers that address the following themes: · The globalization and internationalization of Chinese media industries, including both Internet and other traditional media · The roles of international regulatory bodies and international non-governmental organizations in shaping the landscape of new media in China · The roles of Chinese authorities in shaping global policies regarding information and communication technologies (ICTs) · The economics of Chinese new ICT companies, including foreign and local venture capitalists, shareholders, business models, sources of profits, consumer strategy, etc. · The evolving political parallelism in Chinese media industry · Comparisons of Chinese new media industry with other countries’ media industry *Abstract Submissions* Please submit a 500-words abstract in word or pdf format to ica15china(a)gmail.com. New app for social media translation and annotation

Hi everyone, Wanted to share some news about a new project our team at Meedan has been working on, called Bridge, an app for social translation of social media. I believe I've been in touch with a number of folks on the AIR-L list independently, and I apologies for the double info. Bridge was recently featured in Nieman Lab, and the article offers a nice overview of the project: With Bridge, Meedan hopes to convey the nuances of language that often get lost in the machine translations that the social networks currently use…. Meedan is currently focused only on Arabic, Spanish, and Portuguese, and for now it’s only offering it as an iPhone app, though there is a desktop reader that lets users follow different feeds of translated posts for various events. http://www.niemanlab.org/2015/08/tweeting-across-borders-with-a-new-mobile-… Now, we’re thinking a lot about how we’re taking Bridge forward as a platform for human-powered translations of social media in real time news, and we're also interested in speaking with researchers who might want to use the app for their work. Call for Papers (CFP): The Serendipity Factor: Evaluating the Affordances of Digital Environments SEADE (pronounced ‘seed’) Workshop at CHIIR 2016 (ACM SIGIR Conference on Human Information Interaction and Retrieval) http://sigir.org/chiir2016/ March 17, 2016, 9:00am-5:00pm, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States For two decades, research has sought to understand serendipity and how it may be facilitated in digital environments such as information visualization systems, search systems, and social media. The motivation for investigating serendipity comes from its association with positive outcomes that range from personal benefits to global rewards. To date, research has made significant headway in defining and mapping the process of serendipity and new tools are emerging to support it. But we lack robust methods of evaluating new or enhanced features, functions, and tools. The goal of the Workshop is to examine how we balance the tension between diversity and novelty in designing digital environments and subsequently how we evaluate the ‘serendipitousness’ of those environments. We invite participants from a range of disciplines (e.g., information science, HCI, digital humanities, cognitive science) and research perspectives to help us solve this wicked problem. How to participate Submit a 2-page paper using the ACM SIG Proceedings Template<http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates> about your ongoing work, recent results, or study methods related to serendipity, either published, or work in progress. Possible themes for these papers may include, but are not limited to: Evaluating whether or how digital environments enableserendipity 1. Use of qualitative methods such as interviews and think-aloud to evaluate user perceptions 2. Modifications to quantitative evaluation methods such as controlled experiments and log file analyses to test designs 3. Identification of factors other than the environment (e.g., context, individual differences, strategies, emotions, attitudes) that influence serendipity that should be taken into consideration during evaluation Designing elements and functions in digital environments so that serendipity is facilitated 1. Application of theory and models in the design (or evaluation) of affordances related to serendipity 2. Design of serendipitous digital environments (e.g., information visualization systems, recommender systems, digital libraries, search engines) Authors of selected papers will be asked to A) give “lightning talks” on their work through a 5-minute presentation; or B) participate in a “show and tell event” to demonstrate their project or prototype. In addition, just prior to and during the workshop we will be conducting a whirlwind Delphi study to identify essential and novel measures for assessing “serendipitousness.” The results of the group effort will be discussed at the Workshop to highlight pertinent measures. Gender, activism and technology – Bridging theory and practice #RMF_WeCanDoIt Organised by Elinor Carmi As the artificial boundaries between theory and practice dissolve, more opportunities to integrate one into the other emerge. Whether it is the growing practice-based degrees, academic jobs becoming more and more precarious, an urge to utilise theory in the ‘real world’, or political and economical events pushing for response - the time for action is now. Feminism, media, culture, computing, art, anthropology, sociology, and other disciplines have a lot to offer to activist projects outside or complementary to academia, such as NGOs, think tanks and other collective who seek to make a change. How can skills acquired in academia assist in working for activist organisations? How to start your own organisation? This event is meant to bring together women who conduct research and other initiatives in what can broadly be defined as activist projects. The Radical Media Forum aims to provide a platform to discuss the options, challenges and questions that arise while working in such organisations and how to start your own with a special consideration to feminist issues. Video games are now a cultural industry of great economic importance, which in 2014 had a turnover of 996€ million in Spain (AEVI, 2015). Digital technologies promote a transformation in the practice of gaming and the role it plays in contemporary society. Hello all! The 19th ACM Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing (CSCW 2016) will be held from February 27 through March 2 in downtown San Francisco. For example, we are hoping to provide those with mobility impairments, chronic health issues, or temporary travel limitations with opportunities to attend the conference from remote locations. Currently remote attendance is still at an exploratory stage, so we can only accommodate a small number of remote attendees. We are planning to study the experience as part of our research so remote attendees should expect to participate in user studies.
