Charting the Digital: Play, Discourse, Disruption
by Alex Gekker 06 Dec '15

06 Dec '15

Dear list, The following might be relevant for those engaged with data, interfaces and/or platform studies, as well as general research into space and place. Apologies for cross-posting. regards, Alex. ======== (A handy PDF version of the call can be found here <https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/15825733/DisseminationProjectCFP%20Fina…> ) 8-9 October 2016, Venice (Italy) First call for papers Organised by the ERC funded Charting the Digital team: Sybille Lammes (Principal Investigator), Chris Perkins (Senior Research Fellow), Sam Hind (PhD candidate), Alex Gekker (PhD candidate) and Clancy Wilmott (PhD candidate and Research Fellow). ____ Whether a navigation device that adjusts its route-display according to where the driver chooses to go, or a map in a computer game that is co-produced by players’ input, digital mapping has transformed our daily lives and how we engage with and shape our worlds. During this final conference of the ERC project Charting the Digital we will share and discuss what this transformation means. Over the last 4 years the Charting team has interrogated what this shift entails, taking on board new developments in the field as well as novel technological possibilities. This has encompassed the deployment of theoretical and methodological frameworks in order to analyse a broad spectrum of digital mapping applications, platforms and devices - from the use of mobile apps such as Google/Apple Maps, Citymapper, Ingress, TripAdvisor, Waze and many more to revolutionary platforms like Google Earth and OSM and devices from smartphones and watches to fitness trackers. Using an interdisciplinary approach we have examined digital maps in relation to each other, to ‘traditional’ non-digital cartographies and to other media forms concerned with mapping and navigation. In so doing we have expanded concepts of navigational interfaces; play, playfulness and playful mapping; casual politics; cartographic reason and logic; and mapping experimentation, risk and failure. Now it is time to set up the next stage of this inquiry. Through discussion with scholars whose ideas influence, challenge or resonate with our work, we wish to open the question of what digital mapping is, has become, or could become in the future. ____ We are interested in a variety of themes, which include, but are not limited to: Playful cartography - videogames and maps - minimaps, player representation, post-colonialism - location-based games - pervasive games with/out maps - mapping as play, play as mapping: the relations between game maps and physical movement - actions/activities/manoeuvres - situationism and pyscho-geography - cheating Mapping and discourse - systems of thought - interoperable logics - rationalism - authority - transformations - transplantations - abstraction and formalisation - cartographic reason - maps and culture Performative mapping - embodiment - materiality - new technologies - new vocabularies - imaginaries - spatialities - limits to representation - temporality (immediacy, ephemerality, (a)synchronicities) Big data, small data, ‘sweaty’ data in digital mapping practices - empirical/ethical challenges - ‘offline’ to ‘online’ articulation - visualisation: the transformation from data to map (layering, inscription) - cartographic politics of big data - issues of representation/scale - applicability of big data metaphors (‘fumes’, ‘sweat’, stacks etc.) Disruptive cartographies - tactical/strategic/logistic - interrelation between disruption, disobedience, disorientation and dislocation - risk and excess (and play) - cartographies of care - autonomous mapping practices - ‘disruption’ as innovation (critique of) - post-colonial mapping - new epistemologies/ways of mapping/unmapping - hacking, hacker culture and crypto-politics - failure (systemic, glitches, inter-active/haptic, capture/collect, privacy/crypto concerns, as productive/non-binary, entrepreneurial/motivational discourse) Mapping methods - in pedagogy - design and making - conceptual frameworks (situatedness, moments, traces, instantiations, models etc.) - playful mapping as method - interdisciplinarity - mobile methods & fieldwork Future Maps and future mapping - self-driving cars and mapping - predictive maps and crisis maps - embodied, sensory maps/wearable technology - personalised maps - ‘dumb’ phones, un-mapping and non-maps We invite contributions from methodological, theoretical and practical vantage points, and are particularly interested in bringing together a wide range of approaches, from junior and senior researchers, and from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. Please send a proposal of 500 words (including keywords) before 30 January 2016 to: chartingthedigital(a)gmail.com Thank you in advance, The Charting the Digital team ======= Alex Gekker, PhD Candidate (Promovendus), Media and Culture, Utrecht University. Reminder: CFP - Archives Unleashed - Dec. 7 Deadline
by Matthew Weber 04 Dec '15

04 Dec '15

http://archivesunleashed.ca <http://archivesunleashed.ca/> Robarts Library, University of Toronto 3-5 March 2016 Travel grants available for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and contingent faculty Applications due 4 December 2015 The World Wide Web has a profound impact on how we research and understand the past. The sheer amount of cultural information that is generated and, crucially, preserved every day in electronic form, presents exciting new opportunities for researchers. Much of this information is captured within web archives. Web archives often contain hundreds of billions of web pages, ranging from individual homepages and social media posts, to institutional websites. These archives offer tremendous potential for social scientists and humanists, and the questions research may pose stretch across a multitude of fields. Scholars broaching topics dating back to the mid-1990s will find their projects enhanced by web data. Moreover, scholars hoping to study the evolution of cultural and societal phenomena will find a treasure trove of data in web archives. In short, web archives offer the ability to reconstruct large-scale traces of the relatively recent past. While there has been considerable discussion about web archive tools and datasets, few forums or mechanisms for coordinated, mutually informing development efforts have been created. This hackathon presents an opportunity to collaboratively unleash our web collections, exploring cutting-edge research tools while fostering a broad-based consensus on future directions in web archive analysis. This hackathon will bring together a small group of 20-30 participants to collaboratively develop new open-source tools and approaches to hackathon, and to kick-off collaboratively inspired research projects. Researchers should be comfortable with command line interactions, and knowledge of a scripting language such as Python strongly desired. By bringing together a group of like-minded scholars and programmers, we hope to begin building unified analytic production effort and to continue coalescing this nascent research community. At this event, we hope to converge on a shared vision of future directions in the use of web archives for inquiry in the humanities and social sciences in order to build a community of practice around various web archive analytics platforms and tools. Thanks to the generous support of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the University of Waterloo, the University of Toronto, Rutgers University, the University of Québec in Outaouais, the Internet Archive, Library and Archives Canada, and Compute Canada, we will cover all meals and refreshments for attendees. We are also providing sample datasets for people to work on during the hackathon, or they are happy to use their own. Included datasets are: – the .gov web archive covering the American government domain; – the Government of Canada web archive from Library and Archives Canada; – the Canadian Political Parties and Political Interest Groups web archive from the University of Toronto. Those interested in participating should send a 250-word expression of interest and a CV to Ian Milligan (i2millig(a)uwaterloo.ca <mailto:i2millig@uwaterloo.ca><mailto:i2millig@uwaterloo.ca <mailto:i2millig@uwaterloo.ca>>) by 7 December 2015. This expression of interest should address the scholarly questions that you will be bringing to the hackathon, and what datasets you might be interested in either working with or bringing to the event. Applicants will be notified by 18 December 2015.

2nd CfP: CSCW 2016 Workshop: Developing a Research Agenda for Human-Centered Data Science
by Cecilia Aragon 04 Dec '15

04 Dec '15

[Our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this CfP] ---------------------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS/PARTICIPATION: One-day Workshop on *Developing a Research Agenda for Human-Centered Data Science* in conjunction with CSCW 2016 http://cscw.acm.org/2016/ Sunday, February 28th, 2016 San Francisco, CA, USA Workshop Website: https://cscw2016hcds.wordpress.com/ ---------------------------------- Important dates: - 11th December 2015: Submission of Position Papers - 18th January 2016: Notification of acceptance - 25th January 2016: Camera-ready version - 28th February 2016: Workshop at CSCW 2016 ---------------------------------- TOPIC: The study and analysis of large and complex data sets offer a wealth of insights in a variety of applications. Computational approaches provide researchers access to broad assemblages of data, but the insights extracted may lack the rich detail that qualitative approaches have brought to the understanding of sociotechnical phenomena. How do we preserve the richness associated with traditional qualitative methods while utilizing the power of large data sets? How do we uncover social nuances or consider ethics and values in data use? These and other questions are explored by human-centered data science, an emerging field at the intersection of human-computer interaction (HCI), computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW), human computation, and the statistical and computational techniques of data science. This workshop, the first of its kind at CSCW, seeks to bring together researchers interested inhuman-centered approaches to data science to collaborate, define a research agenda, and form a community. PARTICIPATION: This workshop provides a venue for attendees to discuss a variety of topics in human-centered data science. We welcome researchers interested in exploring how data-driven and qualitative research can be integrated to address complex questions in a diverse range of areas, including but not limited to social computing, urban, health, or crisis informatics, scientific, business, policy, technical, and other fields. Researchers and practitioners working with large data sets (“big data”) and/or qualitative data sets looking to expand their methodological toolbox are invited to participate and share their experiences while learning from the broader community. Topics and themes of interest include, but are not limited to: - Deep ethnographic methods: How do we preserve the richness of traditional qualitative techniques in data science? - Scaling up qualitative data analysis: How do we deal with ever growing qualitative datasets? - Quantitative and behavioral methods: How are quantitative and behavioral methods related to data mining, machine learning, and qualitative methods? - Connecting across levels of analysis: How can we integrate the analysis of personal data with large-scale data? - Ethics and values of data use: What ethical questions should we raise in using large-scale online data? - Privacy of data use: How can we preserve anonymity and privacy within data ecosystems that can easily expose users? - Human-centered algorithm design: How do we design machine learning algorithms tailored for human use and understanding? - Understanding community data: How can we integrate knowledge gained about communities from their aggregate social data as well as their personal experiences? - Health and well-being at micro and macro scales: What understandings can be exposed or occluded by aggregate or granular perspectives on health and well-being? SUBMISSION: Please submit a position paper (from 2 to 4 pages in the CSCW ACM sigCHI EA format – see http://www.sigchi.org/publications/chipubform/sigchi-extended-abstracts-for…) by 11th December 2015 to hcds.cscw2016(a)gmail.com The submissions will be reviewed by the organizers with support of other researchers in a dedicated program committee and selected according to their potential to contribute to the workshop topic and to foster discussion. All accepted contributions (notifications will be sent out by 18 January 2016) will be made available on the website to allow participants to prepare for the workshop. The organizers may consider the publication of revised versions of accepted papers as part of a special issue in a CSCW related journal. ORGANIZERS: Cecilia Aragon, University of Washington. CJ Hutto, Georgia Institute of Technology. Yun Huang, Syracuse University. Wanli Xing, University of Missouri. Gina Neff, University of Washington. Jinyoung Kim, University of Maryland, College Park. CFP: Geographies of Interruption: Body, Location, and Experience
by Anderson, Joel Neville 03 Dec '15

03 Dec '15

Geographies of Interruption: Body, Location, and Experience The 23rd Annual Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender and Women’s Studies International Graduate Conference Keynote Speaker: Jasbir Puar Associate Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies, Rutgers University April 8, 2016 University of Rochester Rochester, NY http://www.rochester.edu/college/wst/grad/conf2016.html Each year, a diverse group of participants gather in Rochester, NY for a graduate conference held by the Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender and Women’s Studies. This conference aims to foster an environment of interdisciplinary communication, knowledge exchange, and collaboration. We take geography to be the practice and process of mapping bodies, spaces, and experiences. In particular, we hope to inspire questions concerning the interruptions of such geographies, especially those relating to gender and sexuality. Such questions might include, but are not limited to: * How does social, bodily, and geographical mobility complicate the mapping of spaces and bodies? * How do media forms constitute counter-geographies? * Does sharing a photo of a fallen Syrian refugee on one’s Facebook timeline intervene in a meaningful way? * In what ways are sexed and/or sexualized bodies mapped into conceptions of (trans)nationality? * How might race and class interrupt and problematize feminist and queer geography? * What are the affective ramifications of contemporary or historical forms of segregation? * How do gendered perceptions of bodies in pain affect medical treatment or scales of pain? * How does web mapping (e.g. Google Maps) reproduce or resist the gendered, classed, and racial power dynamics of prior methods of mapping? * What are the gendered biases of computer coding languages? We invite graduate students from all disciplines to submit research on questions related to the conference theme and especially in response to the keynote speaker’s research. In addition to more traditional scholarship, we encourage creative interpretations of this year’s theme, performances, and collaborative presentations. Submission Details: Please send a 300-word abstract to the graduate organizing committee at SBAI2016conf(a)gmail.com<mailto:SBAI2016conf@gmail.com> as a Word or PDF document, including name, institutional affiliation, email address, a brief biographical statement, and a list of any equipment needed for your presentation. Presentations will be 20 minutes. Submissions are due no later than February 2, 2016. You will receive the committee’s decision by mid-February.
