CFP: Geographies of Interruption: Body, Location, and Experience (23rd Annual Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender and Women’s Studies International Graduate Conference, University of Rochester)

Geographies of Interruption: Body, Location, and Experience The 23rd Annual Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender and Women’s Studies International Graduate Conference Keynote Speaker: Jasbir Puar Associate Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies, Rutgers University April 8, 2016 University of Rochester Rochester, NY http://www.rochester.edu/college/wst/grad/conf2016.html Each year, a diverse group of participants gather in Rochester, NY for a graduate conference held by the Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender and Women’s Studies. This conference aims to foster an environment of interdisciplinary communication, knowledge exchange, and collaboration. We take geography to be the practice and process of mapping bodies, spaces, and experiences. In particular, we hope to inspire questions concerning the interruptions of such geographies, especially those relating to gender and sexuality. Such questions might include, but are not limited to: * How does social, bodily, and geographical mobility complicate the mapping of spaces and bodies? * How do media forms constitute counter-geographies? * Does sharing a photo of a fallen Syrian refugee on one’s Facebook timeline intervene in a meaningful way? * In what ways are sexed and/or sexualized bodies mapped into conceptions of (trans)nationality? * How might race and class interrupt and problematize feminist and queer geography? * What are the affective ramifications of contemporary or historical forms of segregation? * How do gendered perceptions of bodies in pain affect medical treatment or scales of pain? * How does web mapping (e.g. Google Maps) reproduce or resist the gendered, classed, and racial power dynamics of prior methods of mapping? * What are the gendered biases of computer coding languages? We invite graduate students from all disciplines to submit research on questions related to the conference theme and especially in response to the keynote speaker’s research. In addition to more traditional scholarship, we encourage creative interpretations of this year’s theme, performances, and collaborative presentations. Submission Details: Please send a 300-word abstract to the graduate organizing committee at SBAI2016conf(a)gmail.com<mailto:SBAI2016conf@gmail.com> as a Word or PDF document, including name, institutional affiliation, email address, a brief biographical statement, and a list of any equipment needed for your presentation. Presentations will be 20 minutes. Submissions are due no later than February 2, 2016. You will receive the committee’s decision by mid-February.

Defending Human Rights in a Digital Age (II) - 8 Dec, 6:30PM at Goldsmiths (London)
by Elinor Carmi 03 Dec '15

03 Dec '15

Hi everyone, Please join us to the second edition of Defending Human Rights in a Digital Age! When: Tuesday, 8 December 2015, at 6:30-9:00 PM. Where: Goldsmiths, University of London. Lower Ground Floor Lecture Theatre 1 (LG01) of the Professor Stuart Hall Building. For directions and campus map see http://www.gold.ac.uk/find-us/ What: This second edition of "Defending Human Rights in a Digital Age" continues the conversation from earlier this year. Since then a lot has happened to raise the stakes and reveal the increasing divergence between the way governments and corporations look to gather and retain large databases ("Big Data") and calls for greater protection of civil liberties online. This time panellists discuss the shifting context in which politicians, activists, and researchers perceive the challenges and opportunities for a rights-based and sustainable internet. Future decisions about internet design, access, and use now have to take account of the digital dimension to war, terrorism, migration flows, and refugee movements. They are also still grappling with the implications of the Snowden revelations on how the media, political institutions, judiciaries, and businesses respond to debates around "internet freedom", "cybersecurity", privacy and freedom of expression online, and concerns about the concentration of internet ownership and control in the hands of a few. What are the real and imagined dangers facing citizens and their political representatives at the online--offline nexus? How can rights-based approaches to decisions about internet design, access, and use make a difference? Are our rights online under threat by our own governments? Is there a trade-off between civil liberties and national security online? Is it time to stop giving away so much information when we use commercial social media? Are encryption and obfuscation forms of resistance or compliance? These questions and more will be up for discussion. PANELLISTS: Renata Avila - @avilarenata Sherif Elsayed-Ali - @sherifea Maria Farrell - @mariafarrell Becky Kazansky - @pondswimmer Annie Machon - @anniemachon Carly Nyst - @carlynyst Moderator: Marianne Franklin - @GloComm The event is hosted by the Global Media and Transnational Communications MA Program with the support of the Centre for Investigative Journalism (CIJ), Critical InfoSec, the Centre for Global Media and Democracy, the Digital Journalism MA Program, and openDemocracy. Second Call: Digital Methods Winter School '16 Amsterdam - "Otherwise Engaged"
by Sánchez Querubín, Natalia 02 Dec '15

02 Dec '15

Dear All, The Digital Methods Initiative (DMI) will host its 8th annual Winter School from 11th January to 15th January 2016 at the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands. Below please find the call for participation. The application deadline is 10th December. This year’s theme is ‘Otherwise Engaged’, which implies two projects. The first refers to the (interface) politics of attention whereby online services are variously vying to gain recognition through jumpy banners, push notifications and metrification, including those little red badge numbers on the iPhone that call for labouring and at least marking as read. The other sense refers to how engagement online is currently measured, and how it may be thought of differently and critically if one substitutes return visits and retention rates for forms of political engagement. Amongst this year's keynotes will be Lilie Chouliaraki<http://www.lse.ac.uk/media@lse/WhosWho/AcademicStaff/LilieChouliaraki.aspx>, Professor of Media and Communications at the London School of Economics (LSE) and winner of the International Communication Association's 2015 Outstanding Book Award. There will also be a performance and reception for Metahaven's<http://metahaven.net/> latest book Black Transparency<http://www.sternberg-press.com/index.php?pageId=1489&l=en&bookId=383&sort=y…>. The format is that of a data sprint, with hands-on work on engagement metrics in for political, social and media research, together with a Mini-conference, where PhD candidates, motivated scholars and advanced graduate students present short papers on digital methods and new media related topics, and receive feedback from the Amsterdam DMI researchers and international participants. Participants need not give a paper at the Mini-conference to attend the Winter School. As of this year, the DMI Winter School is officially a part of the University of Amsterdam Summer School<http://www.uva.nl/en/education/other-programmes/summer-winter> programme and there are opportunities for scholarships if your home university belongs to LERU or/and U21 networks. Feel free to forward the call to interested individuals. Otherwise Engaged. Critical Analytics and the New Meanings of Engagement Online https://wiki.digitalmethods.net/Dmi/WinterSchool2016 Digital Methods Winter School 2016 11-15 January 2016 Digital Methods Initiative University of Amsterdam Turfdraagsterpad 9 1012 XT Amsterdam the Netherlands Digital Methods Winter School, Data Sprint and Mini-Conference The Digital Methods Initiative (DMI), Amsterdam, is holding its annual Winter School on Critical Analytics and the Meanings of Engagement. The format is that of a data sprint, with hands-on work on engagement metrics for political, social and media research, together with a programme of keynote speakers and a Mini-conference, where PhD candidates, motivated scholars and advanced graduate students present short papers on digital methods and new media related topics, and receive feedback from the Amsterdam DMI researchers and international participants. Participants need not give a paper at the Mini-conference to attend the Winter School. For a preview of what the event is like, you can view short video clips from previous editions of the Summer School in 2015<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nTxwl_kA5I> and 2014<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0BHzUefGqA>. ‘Otherwise engaged’, the title of the Winter School, implies two projects. Given the medium's power to distract and produce continuous partial attention, the term engagement appears oxymoronic when discussing online attention. However, “user engagement metrics” on the web, such as unique visitors, click-throughs, page views, duration and returns, have been joined by social media measures as likes, shares, comments, liked comments summed to indicate most engaged with content. In Google Analytics an entire vocabulary and set of measures exist to capture engagement. More conceptually the idea that content enlivens and animates, continually, has led to distinctions between liveness and liveliness, where the latter would be considered more meaningful engagement. Whilst there is thus the question of when there is only an appearance of engagement and when one is truly engaged, we are also interested in disengagement, and developing metrics for attention-less content, and that which makes one leave the scene. There is also the question of the relationship between engagement metrics and more established notions of political engagement. Is the online making one more of a remote observer than an on-the-ground actor, as political engagement theorist have discussed over and again in terms of slacktivism and clicktivism. Are there techniques to grasp content and activity that lead to apathy? The accompanying data sprint will seek to work with engagement metrics (and create others) to capture the meaning of activity, inquiring into when one is fully, multiply or otherwise engaged, with data from online media organisations (and selected new-form journalism) as well as campaigning by NGOs. Digital Methods Mini-Conference at the Winter School The annual Digital Methods Mini-Conference at the Winter School, normally a one-day affair, provides the opportunity for digital methods and allied researchers to present short yet complete papers (5,000-7,500 words) and serve as respondents, providing feedback. Often the work presented follows from previous Digital Methods Summer Schools. The mini-conference accepts papers in the general digital methods and allied areas: the hyperlink and other natively digital objects, the website as archived object, web historiographies, search engine critique, Google as globalizing machine, cross-spherical analysis and other approaches to comparative media studies, device cultures, national web studies, Wikipedia as cultural reference, the technicity of (networked) content, post-demographics, platform studies, crawling and scraping, graphing and clouding, and similar. Applications: Key dates The deadline for application is 10 December 2015. To apply please send along a letter of motivation, your CV (including postal address), a headshot photo, 100-word bio as well as a copy of your passport (details page only) to winterschool [at] digitalmethods.net<http://digitalmethods.net/>. *The 2016 International Communication Association (ICA) Post-Conference* *and 14th Chinese Internet Research Conference (CIRC)* *Mediatization: Digital Revolution and the Chinese Setting* *Call for Papers* The 2016 International Communication Association Post-Conference and 14th Chinese Internet Research Conference (CIRC), with the theme of “Mediatization: Digital Revolution and the Chinese Setting”, will be held on June 14 to 15, 2016, in the Journalism School of Fudan University. *Theme and Content* The convergence of digital technologies, including the Internet and mobile media, has reconfigured communications and social relationships, resulting in the dramatic transformation of Chinese society. This trend started initially at a macro social level, reforming and recombining social relationships, but has created a ripple effect with profound consequences, changing people’s daily lives and bringing about mediatized lifestyles. New media have changed every aspect of Chinese society. The Chinese government has actively promoted its most recent technology campaigns in new and traditional economic sectors, through slogans such as “Internet thinking” and programs such as “Internet plus”. Digital media have become a priority in China’s grand strategy and policymaking. Stimulated by such forces, the further rise of new media and the deepening of social transformation are foreseeable with tremendous consequences for China, Asia, and the world. From sociological and cultural studies perspectives, we understand media as more than technologies or particular modes of organizing and/or presenting content. They also constitute a vital social institution and space for interactions. As media technologies and mediated communication embed themselves deeper and deeper into people’s daily lives, and involve themselves more with the holistic construction of a society and a culture, the mediatization processes emerges. Mediatization not only re-structures the past but also introduces a novel social form, instigating new social cultural imagination in various aspects of modern life, in politics, culture, religion, education, and other institutionalized social practices. More than applying or testing the existing mediatization theories, this conference is designed to re-construct mediatization theory. In China, the latest development of digital technologies affords a unique real-life setting. On one hand, as we look across the world, the social changes in China brought by new media are some of the most rapid, drastic and thorough around the globe. On the other hand, the digital revolution prevailing in China has produced a lot of new aspects which present western theories have not covered, where new critical facets of mediatization theory still wait to be explored. New media research rooted in Chinese experience presents precious opportunities to broaden our conceptual scope and spur fresh theoretical conversations. For instance, WeChat, a mobile application that has attracted over 400 million active users, integrates mass communication, Internet and interpersonal communication, while embedding itself deeply in Chinese social networks. WeChat brings Chinese from all over the world closer to each other and creates a unique mode of mediated communication. Novel communication forms such as WeChat not only drive a new round of digital transformation for traditional media, they also push governments, businesses, academic institutions, civic and grassroots organizations to create their own WeChat presence. Exciting scenarios unfold in China's new media contexts, where mediatization involves much more than media organizations and the communication processes they initiate. Personal and mobile communication tools are equally important, if not more. So is the convergence of various social processes and modes of communication. The communication practices through new media constitute new ways of everyday life, new modes of being, reconfiguring time-space. We intend to enrich and expand the theoretical meaning of mediatization theory, accentuate communication as mediating practices that connect humans to the world, and thereby promote a new “communication turn” that enables communication – including all acts of communication by all communicators– rather than the exclusive category of media organizations to become the cornerstone of Chinese society and humanity. Therefore, we set the theme of this conference as: "Mediatization: Digital revolution and the Chinese context". We welcome submissions from different theoretical and methodological traditions that address a wide range of topics in various Chinese contexts including, but not limited to, the following: 1) Mediatization: New media and the governance of Chinese society 2) Mediatization: New media and the convergence of news industry 3) Mediatization: New media and urban communication in China 4) Mediatization: New media, public opinion and discursive competition 5) Mediatization: New media and public communication 6) Mediatization: Global network and China’s interactions with the world 7) Mediatization: New media and everyday life *Organizer* Journalism School, Fudan University Center for Information and Communication Studies, Fudan University *Organizing Committee* Minghua Yin, Professor and Dean, Journalism School of Fudan University Wei Sun, Professor and Deputy Dean, Journalism School of Fudan University Dan Huang, Professor and Director, Center for Information and Communication Studies, Fudan University Shuanglong Li, Associate Professor and Deputy Dean, Journalism School of Fudan University Baohua Zhou, Professor and Assistant Dean, Journalism School of Fudan University Jack Linchuan Qiu, Associate Professor of Chinese University of Hong Kong and steering committee member, Chinese Internet Research Conference *Venue*: Journalism School, Fudan University, Shanghai, China *Time*: June 14 to June 15, 2016 *Language*: The official conference languages are English and Chinese *Fees**: *There is no registration fee for this conference. Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award 2016
by Mark D. Johns 01 Dec '15

CALL FOR AWARD APPLICATIONS Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award 2016 Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research http://www.cccsir.com/ The Carl Couch Center issues an international call for student-authored papers to be considered for Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes both theoretical and empirical papers that apply symbolic interactionist approaches to internet studies. According to basic symbolic interactionist premises, what we understand as self, identity, relationship, and cultural formations are constructed dialogically and interactively. While the works of George H. Mead, Georg Simmel, Erving Goffman and other leading symbolic interactionists have been integral to the study of social interaction, Carl Couch was among the first from this tradition to suggest the importance of engaging in the study of mediated interaction. It is critical that symbolic interactionists move boldly forward, beyond Couch's initial suggestion, to study what has become for many a dominant form of communication in their everyday life. Whether we research identities, emotion, memory, family, work, career, presentations of self, deception, love, loss or other areas, the impact of mediated communication is felt by those interacting within it. As internet-related media continue to influence our everyday interactions--not only with other people but also with technologies, devices, algorithms, platform parameters, and so forth--it becomes crucial for symbolic interactionists to attend to the role of these mediating factors in the interaction process. We encourage any paper that uses a symbolic interactionist approach in internet studies. We also encourage papers that explore the interface between deliberate social interaction and structured (or automated) interactions sponsored or enacted by various technological features, exploring not only how identities, relations, and social formations are negotiated through social interactions, but also how these interactions are mediated further through the use or capacities of various technologies. Papers will be evaluated based on the quality of (1) mastery of symbolic interactionist approaches and concepts, (2) originality, (3) organization, (4) presentation, and (5) advancement of knowledge. Those contemplating entering should note that an interactionist approach demands thoughtful analysis, and not mere description, of social interactions. Evaluation will be administered by a Review Committee of: Mark D. Johns, Luther College, Decorah, Iowa Camille Johnson-Yale, Lake Forest College, Illinois Lois Scheidt, Indiana University, Bloomington Competition is open to graduate or undergraduate students of all disciplines. Works that are published or accepted for publication are not eligible for award consideration. Entries should be in English and not exceed 30 pages (approximately 7500 words) in length, including references and appendices. Limit of one entry per student per year. The top paper will receive Couch Award to be presented at the 2016 meeting of the Association of Internet Researchers (aoir.org) in Berlin, Germany. The top paper will be awarded a certificate and a cash prize of $300 US and the author will be invited to present their work at a session of the AoIR conference, October 6-8, 2016 in Berlin. Candidates should send a copy of their paper electronically, along with information concerning the location and level of their studies, to Mark Johns at mjohns(a)luther.edu Application deadline is May 15, 2016. Notification of award will be sent by June 15. Those with questions or comments about Couch Award application, please contact: Mark D. Johns Communication Studies Luther College, Decorah, Iowa Phone: 563-387-1347 E-mail: mjohns(a)luther.edu
