(and sorry for crossposts and/or weird typos that make their way into this note!) http://wp.me/p1yguQ-Fk APPLICATION DEADLINE: JANUARY 29, 2016 Microsoft Research New England (MSRNE) is looking for advanced PhD students to join the Social Media Collective (SMC) for its 12-week 2016 Intern Program. The Social Media Collective scholars at MSRNE bring together empirical and critical perspectives to address complex socio-technical issues. Our research agenda draws on a social scientific/humanistic lens to understand the social meanings and possible futures of media and communication technologies. The ideal candidate may be trained in any number of disciplines (including anthropology, communication, information studies, media studies, sociology, science and technology studies, or a related field), but should have a strong social scientific or humanistic methodological, analytical, and theoretical foundation, be interested in questions related to media or communication technologies and society or culture, and be interested in working in a highly interdisciplinary environment that includes computer scientists, mathematicians, and economists. MSRNE internships are 12-week paid internships in Cambridge, Massachusetts. PhD interns are expected to be on-site for the duration of their internship. Primary mentors for this year will be Nancy Baym, Tarleton Gillespie, and Mary L. Gray, with additional guidance offered by our lab postdocs and visiting scholars. PhD interns at MSRNE are expected to devise and execute a research project (see project requirements below), based on their application project proposals, during their internships. The expected outcome of an internship at MSRNE is a draft of a publishable scholarly paper for an academic journal or conference of the intern’s choosing. Our goal is to help the intern advance their own career; interns are strongly encouraged to work towards a creative outcome that will help them on the academic job market. Interns are also expected to collaborate on projects or papers with full-time researchers and visitors, contribute to the SMC blog, give short presentations, attend the weekly lab colloquia, and contribute to the life of the community through weekly lunches with fellow PhD interns and the broader lab community. While this is not an applied program, MSRNE encourages interdisciplinary collaboration with computer scientists, economists, and mathematicians. PEOPLE AT MSRNE SOCIAL MEDIA COLLECTIVE The Social Media Collective is comprised of full-time researchers, postdocs, visiting faculty, Ph.D. interns, and research assistants. Current projects in New England include: • How does the use of social media affect relationships between artists and audiences in creative industries, and what does that tell us about the future of work? (Nancy Baym) • How are social media platforms, through algorithmic design and user policies, adopting the role of intermediaries for public discourse? (Tarleton Gillespie) • What are the cultural, political, and economic implications of crowdsourcing as a new form of semi-automated, globally-distributed digital labor? (Mary L. Gray) • How are predictive analytics used by law enforcement and what are the implications of new data-driven surveillance practices? (Sarah Brayne) • What are the social and political consequences of popular computing folklore? (Kevin Driscoll) • How are the technologies of money changing and what are the social implications of those changes? (Lana Swartz) SMC PhD interns may have the opportunity to connect with our sister Social Media Collective members in New York City. Related projects in New York City include: • What are the politics, ethics, and policy implications of big data science? The year 2015 marks the 10thanniversary of the WSIS process and the year 2016 marks the 10th anniversary of the first GigaNet symposium, which owes its genesis to a joint ICA-IAMCR workshop and has been part of the Internet Governance Forum since 2006. Over the years research on Internet governance has evolved and is no longer focused solely on Internet infrastructure and politics surrounding its protocols, unique identifiers, and domain names. Social media, sharing economy, cyberwarfare, Internet of things, and wearable technology are just a few relatively new developments raising new governance challenges. Yet, even with the expanding boundaries, the core questions of Internet governance remain focused on the intersection of power, communication, and technology. With this pre-conference we want to embark on a boundary searching exercise for Internet governance studies. What do we see as cutting edge work on Internet governance both conceptually and empirically? What questions do Internet governance researchers ask? What methods are they using? What theories do they build upon? What are the burning issues and the most provocative challenges in the field? What are the best cases illustrating those issues and challenges? How has Internet governance changed over the years? What are the events that have shaped this trajectory? What have we learned about technology, politics, agency, and power over close to two decades of Internet governance research? What are we expecting Internet governance to encompass in the years to come? What forces will shape it? We invite contributions from researchers working on Internet governance questions in the broadest sense. All theoretical and methodological approaches are welcome. The preconference is organized by Global Internet Governance Academic Network (GigaNet) and co- sponsored by the ICA Communication Law and Policy and Communication and Technology divisions, but it touches upon the fields of many more ICA divisions and interest groups. We aim to bring together researchers from different theoretical and methodological backgrounds, as well as practically oriented researchers of Internet governance. Given the location of ICA this year and our plan to have the pre- conference in Tokyo, we hope to see increased participation of researchers from the region. Depending on the mix of submissions we will seek to engage in a dialogue with the local community of Internet governance practitioners. Our goal to have a mutual learning process and exchange of ideas and challenges for the further development of Internet governance research. SUBMISSION DETAILS At this time we invite authors to submit extended abstracts (800-1000 words) that describe the main thesis, research goals, and to the extent possible, the methodological background and findings of their paper. All extended abstracts must be uploaded through EasyChair at http://tiny.cc/ica2016intgov by 15 January 2016, with all identifying information removed. All contributions will be blindly peer-reviewed, and acceptance notifications will be sent out before the end of February 2015. Authors of the accepted abstracts will be asked to submit a full original manuscript of approximately 4000 to 8000 words, which have not been published elsewhere, by 15 April 2016. Based on the volume and the quality of submissions we intend to explore a potential thematic publication of pre-conference materials. PRE-CONFERENCE LOGISTICS The preconference will take place on Wednesday, 8 June 2016 on the Tokyo campus of Kanazawa Institute of Technology. Presenters are expected to register for the pre-conference, but registration is open to both presenters and non-presenters. At the moment, the registration fees stand at 75 USD. Different Games invites participants for its 2016 edition at NYU's Polytechnic School of Engineering, located in Brooklyn, NY, on Friday April 8 and Saturday April 9. Over three years of presenting New York City’s first conference on diversity and inclusivity in games culture, Different Games has drawn more than 700 attendees to NYU’s Downtown Brooklyn campus, in addition to more than 100 arcade games and 150 presenters and speakers! We are thrilled to invite submissions for our fourth annual event which welcomes proposals from all members of the games community — whether designers, students, activists, researchers, journalists and others — to present as part of our two-day program. Submission Formats Paper Presentations and Talks We invite designers, academics and other creative minds to share recent projects as speakers on our conference panels. Possible submission topics may include, but are not limited to: post mortems, design methodology, reflections on playtesting, analysis/commentary on games content (theme, gender, sexuality, etc.), game reception, and game culture/communities. Workshop or Breakout Groups We invite topic-specific or exploratory discussions on challenges and solutions for promoting diversity and inclusion in the broader game community/communities and other pertinent subjects. THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA Faculty Position (tenure-stream) - Information and Media Studies The School of Library, Archival and Information Studies (SLAIS), the iSchool at The University of British Columbia (UBC), invites applications for a full-time position to begin July 1, 2016. The position is expected to be filled at the rank of tenure-track Assistant Professor. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. These are nine-month, tenure-earning positions, the duties of which include teaching, research, and service. The school encourages multidisciplinary collaborations. Faculty members are expected to actively pursue and obtain external funding and to develop projects that achieve peer-reviewed recognition for innovation and excellence. It involves multifaceted processes and logics, from users, who contribute to building the characteristics of the Internet through their choices and usages of online services beyond the plans of developers or regulators, to the social, political, and economic positions and ideologies of businesses, agencies, government institutions, and international bodies. As evidenced from abundant research in Science and Technology Studies, the Internet as a technological artefact has become an expression of the acceptable, not only of the possible. It is the ever-changing result of technological choices made for non-technological reasons. The Internet has become easier to use as users do not have to worry about any of the networking framework or the underlying technologies to access it. Pointing and clicking, coupled with a few, very basic skills, e.g. typing, choosing the right software, etc. allow almost anybody to start a video chat with another person in another country, and to transmit files to them. The end-user doesn't have to worry about the TCP/IP protocols, location of ISP servers, the routing of messages, choices of backbone server connections, datastream conversions, network packages, etc. - it is all handled for them with little transparency of room for choice. There is still a long way to go in terms of raising users' awareness and agency, in a field that actually bears high stakes in terms of privacy, security and freedom of speech. The easy crossing or avoiding of national boundaries using networking technologies has also led to a rise in complaints about some of the data available online. From the clear-cut case of 'child pornography' to cultural and legal differences in attitudes towards gambling, religious jokes, language choices, etc. the use of the Internet has raised important questions about regulation, surveillance and control to safeguard the rights, privacy, and safety of all users of these networks, along with facilitation of access to networks. This phenomenon challenges the sovereignty of nation states and the limits of the jurisdiction of national governments both intra- as well as inter-nationally. Over the past decade, governments have begun to take action with regulatory efforts aimed at protecting their citizens from perceived dangers of the Internet, which has led to the criminalisation of many activities and a divergence of permissible online interactions based on national boundaries of the reach and power of states and their laws. However a large part of Internet governance remains in the hands of other actors like private companies (eg. terms of use) or other non-state actors (eg. standards, dispute resolution). In this regard it is surprising to note the gap that exists between the agencies created to govern or to discuss the governance of the Internet and its infrastructure with a discursive mandate to keep the Internet 'free' and 'open', e.g. ICANN, the IGF, etc. and the users of Internet services, most of whom have never even heard of these agencies, and are seldom asked their opinions about how the Internet should be governed. Internet governance is being discussed and decided by a variety of actors who have designated themselves stakeholders because they control parts of the infrastructure of the Internet, but who are not representing the users of the Internet, while the latter appear to have only vague notions of how the Internet is regulated and governed. As most of these developments have happened without clear overall planning or even statements of intent, there is a need to re-examine Internet governance as it is developing out of largely unrelated practices at different levels and by different sets of actors. This preconference invites paper proposals that address the following types of questions: - Who controls the Internet - and how? - Who are the stakeholders in Internet governance and what do they want? - How do approaches to Internet governance differ internationally? - What kind of governance do Internet users expect and want? - How included or excluded are Internet users from Internet governance? - Can the Internet be considered as a global common good? - Is an Internet of nations in the making? - How are issues of public interest and accountability addressed in current Internet governance discussions? - What is at stake behind such debates as net neutrality, territorialisation, data privacy or open networks? - What are the implications of developments in Internet governance for the study of the Internet as a tool for communication, or as interactive media, or ...? - To what extent have communication studies taken into account different Internet governance regimes in different parts of the world? The preconference aims to identify some of the gaps in studies of stakeholders in Internet governance and actual Internet users in order to create spaces for exploration towards alternative models for Internet governance and alternative approaches to communication studies taking into account geo-political realities as well as the opinions of Internet users.
