call for teacher education collaborators for AoIR16
by Kiersten Greene 24 Nov '15

24 Nov '15

Dear Colleagues, *If you are a teacher educator who is interested in connecting with other teacher educators through AoIR, please read on...* The purpose of this email is to initiate a discussion around scholarship at the intersection of K-12 education and the internet. Though I initially considered producing a call for proposals for a panel presentation for AoIR16, I thought it might be more effective to find more of you out there, first, and then figure out ways in which we might collaborate, second. So much comes to mind in the context of K-12 education when considering the theme of next year's conference, 'internet rules!' As a teacher educator in New York State in the U.S. who looks at the gap between policy and practice, I am interested in understanding how decisions around technology integration in classrooms are being made. And as a practitioner who teaches aspiring teachers how to teach writing, I am curious to further understand the ways in which the process of writing is both changing and being changed by screens and other digital tools with which we compose. If you are interested in connecting with other teacher education scholars, *please complete this quick form by December 15th* <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/14deKGfA_Mdks_aIrvtANnJdNvCVb8DY9K3q_HyYn8m…> . I will follow up shortly after the 15th to connect everyone who responds to this call. At that point, we can talk about how to continue the discussion toward producing a panel proposal for AoIR16 in Berlin. I look forward to connecting with you! Best wishes, Kiersten -- kierstengreene.net brookerhollow.com

FW: [ciresearchers] JoCI - Special Issue on Data Literacy - 2nd call for paper
by Michael Gurstein 24 Nov '15

24 Nov '15

From: ciresearchers-owner(a)vancouvercommunity.net [mailto:ciresearchers-owner@vancouvercommunity.net] On Behalf Of Alan Tygel Subject: [ciresearchers] JoCI - Special Issue on Data Literacy - 2nd call for paper Dear CI community, please find bellow an updated version of the Data Literacy special issue of JoCI. Data Literacy Special Issue – Journal of Community Informatics – 2nd Call ================================================== Special issue – Community Informatics and Data Literacy Journal of Community Informatics (http://ci-journal.net) Call for Submission v2 – Important: deadline extended to the 18th of December 2015 A special issue of the international Journal of Community Informatics (http://ci-journal.net) will be devoted to Data Literacy. Community Informatics (CI) is the study and the practice of enabling communities with Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs). This special issue will focus on the role of data literacy and its possible applications, such as Data Journalism, Smart Cities, E-Government, Data-Based Services, Data Intermediaries, Data Visualization, Statistics for Data Interpretation and Data Collaboration to empower and enable communities. The issue is expected to be published in June 2016. The Journal of Community Informatics is a focal point for the communication of research of interest to a global network of academics, community informatics practitioners and national and multi-lateral policy makers. Call for papers The field of CI seeks to explore the potential of information and communication technologies and their applications for social and economic development efforts at the community level. It particularly seeks to ensure that marginalized individuals and communities can benefit from the opportunities that ICTs can provide. Increasingly, data literacy has been identified as a requirement to make effective use of these opportunities. However, very little attention has been paid to defining what data literacy means, how it can be achieved and which are the impact of its applications. Data literacy refers to the skills, knowledge and context needed to make effective use of data on the web. It includes the ICT skills to find, access and manipulate data; the statistical and subject matter skills to interpret and use the data; and also the context needed to provide the opportunity and motivation to use the data. It can be seen as a characteristic of an individual or a community. Recently there have been calls for greater data literacy from communities as diverse as the open data movement (who see it as essential if open data is to fulfil its promise of greater transparency and engagement) and the citizen science movement (who see it as required for citizens to understand, engage in, and support science). This raises fundamental concerns in CI such as the power of those who are data literate relative to those who are not, and the right of experts to demand skills of the population as a whole. However, these debates need to be underpinned with a clearer and more detailed description of what data literacy is, why it is needed, and concrete examples of success (and fail) cases. Work on data literacy has remained the domain of educationalists and librarians, but the increased use of data in many areas has created a pressing need for a more multi-disciplinary view. For this special issue of the Journal on Data Literacy, we are inviting submissions of original, unpublished articles. Potential topics include (but are not limited to): * What do we mean by data literacy? * Why do we need data literacy? * How should data literacy be achieved? * What are the broader political, social and philosophical implications of data literacy? * What are the practical implications of data literacy? * What is the role of data intermediaries or facilitators? Is Data literacy for everybody, or will we always have the need for intermediaries between the creators/providers of the data and the consumers in order to provide insight on the context and meaning of the data? * Using Data Literacy for: * Enabling data journalism * Making research more sustainable and reproducible over time * Enabling smart cities for all * Enhancing efficiency of e-Government * Enabling data-based services * Creating and understanding data visualization * Data collaboration and crowsourced data * Understading control/surveilance/access limitation over the Internet * The role of statistics for data interpretation We welcome research articles, along with case studies and notes from the field. All research articles will be double blind peer-reviewed. Insights and analytical perspectives from practitioners and policy makers in the form of notes from the field or case studies are also encouraged – these will be reviewed by the editors. Closing date for submission of full papers: 30 September 2015 18th December 2015 Submission Process & Guidelines Authors need to register <http://ci-journal.net/index.php/ciej/user/register> with the Journal prior to submitting or, if already registered, can simply log in <http://ci-journal.net/index.php/ciej/user/register> and begin the five-step <http://pkp.sfu.ca/ojs/docs/userguide/2.3.3/journalManagementSetup.html> process. Please indicate that you are submiting to the Data Literacy Special Issue. Hackademia Summer School
by Enid Gabriella Coleman, Dr. 20 Nov '15

20 Nov '15

Did not seem to make the list the first time so I am trying again: lease spread far and wide. Thanks, Gabriella, Paula and Marcel DCRL Digital Cultures Research Lab Leuphana University Am Sande 5 21335 Lüneburg ———— 15. November 2015 Call For Participants Hackademia: empirical studies in computing cultures A Digital Cultures Research Lab (DCRL) Summer School August 28th – September 2nd, 2016 Leuphana University Curated by Paula Bialski, Leuphana University Gabriella Coleman, McGill University Marcell Mars, Leuphana University Background Studying digital media today means studying those technologists—hackers, security resarchers, game developers, system administrators, and designers—who create and maintain the digital worlds we live in. How much agency lies in the hands of programmers, coders, and engineers to create our digital worlds is still up for debate, yet this much is true: various hacking and related subcultures form critical nodes of practice that help shape and condition the contemporary technologies we use everyday. Whether it is an analyst or coder implementing algorithms at a large financial institution, a group of designers working on improving the user interface for a cryptographic tool, a privacy team securing a browser, a developer coding her own app, cryptographers working on an open source anoymized system, a programmer working on a p2p file-sharing platform, hackers buying and selling zero days in a grey market, a team of system administrators at Google working to scale up services, a journalist-coder developing visualization tools, indie game developers seeking to write a politically minded game, or a hacker-leaker whistleblowing to salavage privacy - all have something to say about how digital technology can and should be created. These technology workers/experts are now central to every field of social, political, and economic import. They secure our communications networks; shape the design and portals we use to connect to our banks, our friends, our loved ones, our colleagues, our business partners; inform us about the activities of our governments; design novel currencies; exfiltrate intellectual property and proof of wrongdoing from corporate actors; offer us alternative ways of organizing our political voices whether through political projects or games; function as conduits and warriors between nations; and allow us to confront the laws we don’t like – through democratic engagements, as in the Free Software movement, or tools that enable outright circumvention. This is an ideal time to understand and ultimately appraise their activities, actions, their desires, and intentions. While an increasing number of scholars – ethnographers, cultural anthropologists, sociologists, and media historians – are undertaking the study of hacker cultures, there are many methodological questions to pose and explore: How much technical knowledge is necessary to study the worlds of computing and programming? How does one gain access to secret nooks of hacking or corporate sites – whether a security company, gaming outfit, or blackhat computer forum – where codes, designers, and hackers labor? How is the study of hackers similar and different to the study of other experts such as scientists? As participant observers, how can we fully understand the engineering culture of the hackers we are studying, and what shortcuts in our methods must be taken in order to create an understanding? Who Should Apply? This summer school invites doctoral students in the field of ethnography, cultural anthropology, media studies, software studies, sociology, science, technology studies, history, or other, who are currently working on a dissertation on the life-worlds, practices, cultures, or platforms of hackers. Hackers here are understood broadly as programmers, coders, pirates, and computer engineers of all shapes and forms – and do not necessarily have to be engaged in illegal or subversive activity or self identify as hackers. Applicants who are struggling with field entry, are learning to code, or seek to expand their methods, are particularly welcome. Who Will Attend? This summer school will provide a dialogue between hackers and academics. As such, we will additionally invite a number of hackers, coders, programmers, and technologists. These guests will lead sessions around the topic of field entrance, knowledge transfer, work organization and hacker communication practices, feminist critiques, and standards/protocols. Keynote speakers will also provide evening lectures, and help lead sessions. Where and when will this take place? The Hackademia summer school will take place at the Digital Cultures Research Lab (DCRL), Leuphana University in Luneburg, Germany (30 minutes away from Hamburg), between August 28th – September 2nd, 2016. How to apply: Please submit your CV along with a 500-word abstract of your dissertation, and a 500-word explanation on why you would like to attend this summer school. The deadline for applications for the summer school is January 4th, 2016. Please email your applications (compile into one PDF) to bialski(a)leuphana.de<mailto:bialski@leuphana.de> All applicants will be informed about the selection of participants in mid-February. The working language of the summer school will be English; therefore, a sufficient understanding of English is expected. There is no participation fee. The organizers will cover accommodation costs. We have a limited amount of need-based travel funding available. Please indicate in your application letter if you wish to apply for travel funding. Ideas? extracting posts and responses from a private Facebook group
by Tracey P. Lauriault 20 Nov '15

20 Nov '15

Greetings all! I have a colleague with the following query? Any ideas? I need to find the easiest possible way of extracting posts and responses from a private Facebook group. I am a member of this group and I have permission from the administrators to access the posts for the purposes of my research. I’ll likely be using NVivo to help qualitatively analyze the posts. But, since I want to extract about a year’s worth of posts and responses, and it’s a fairly busy group, to do this manually is unmanageable. I’m wondering if there’s software out there to help me do this or if there’s a third-party I might be able to hire to help me with this work. The problem seems to stem from the fact it’s a private vs. a public Facebook group. Cheerio Tracey -- *Tracey P.
