Anybody workiing assessing web sites for accessibility and safe browsing
by Peter Timusk 15 Nov '15

15 Nov '15

I wonder if anyone is interested in working on a study with me independently (I am outside of a school research program at least funding wise. My employer also would not support my work on this.) on this theme.? My paper idea for #IR17 or #IR18 ( I like the idea of going to Estonia). News and entertainment web sites and poor design for accessibility and safe browsing: a survey of North American Entertainment Media websites from a code and performance quality perspective. I would welcome help with constructing a sampling frame list of web sites that would be better than my own subjective understanding "North American Entertainment Media websites". I would like to have a large sample that produces more than a 1000 web site study units. Given underlying web code may be in English perhaps the sample could work more internationally but there my socio-cultural knowledge would fail to know what web sites are what. May be every world cities (> 100,000 people) former print newspaper's current web site. I would also welcome another coder like myself who would like to help with downloading/scrapping web site code or other ways of seeing the web sites like inaccessible colour schemes or suspicious linking and autoplay features. The artifacts from these web sites would then show poor design and we would otherwise analysis the code or web site designs in an accessibility and code performance assessment. I may have my own limitations with understanding how web site construction affects performance and accessibility though I do read and follow accessibility in web design. May be someone who knows design philosophy could be helpful constructing the analysis. The results would be useful for a number of uses including building better web sites in the future and assessing just how badly old media like city newspapers have become online. Of course we could produce statistics like most commonly used web design content management systems etc. or most commonly used colour.

Cheers Katrin ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Applications - Networking Workshop in Computational Social Science ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Networking Opportunity for International Research in Computational Social Sciences - Workshop for Early Career Postdoctoral Researchers Worldwide Funded by Volkswagen Foundation February 23-26, 2016 held at GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences Cologne, Germany https://www.volkswagenstiftung.de/en/en/computational-social-sciences.html -------------------- BACKGROUND: VOLKSWAGEN FOUNDATION GRANTS IN COMPUTATIONAL SOCIAL SCIENCE -------------------- The Volkswagen Foundation has released a new funding scheme in the field of computational social science, with a focus on the exploration of socially relevant research questions. The Foundation supports international workshops and summer schools as well as international research co-operations of up to four postdoctoral researchers; any proposal submitted must address socially important topics, which can be explored using (new) tools and methods offered by the "Computational Social Sciences". Project teams can be interdisciplinary, but a social scientist must always be involved. Submission deadlines for proposals for research projects, workshops or summer schools is June 15th, 2016. For further information see https://www.volkswagenstiftung.de/en/en/computational-social-sciences.html -------------------- ABOUT THE NETWORKING WORKSHOP -------------------- In advance of the deadline for applications for cooperative research projects, a networking workshop will be held in Cologne (Germany) on February 23 to 26, 2016. The workshop is directed at postdoctoral researchers worldwide who are interested in collaborating with others in an international cooperative project. The event offers an opportunity to get to know and network with other postdocs - who might turn out to be potential partners for a cooperative project. Furthermore, it will provide space to develop ideas for joint projects. The event will offer both thematic input as well as space to develop cooperative research ideas. Workshop participants will be selected based on this call for applications, see also: https://www.volkswagenstiftung.de/en/funding/international-focus/encomputat… -------------------- IMPORTANT DATES -------------------- Workshop dates: February 23-26, 2016 Application for workshop participation: December 10, 2015 (Proposals for cooperative research projects, workshops, or summer schools due: June 15, 2016) -------------------- TARGET AUDIENCE -------------------- The networking workshop addresses scholars who are either working in the thematic area of "Computational Social Sciences" or who wish to specialize within this field. We particularly welcome researchers from social science disciplines who apply computational tools or methods, or who study socio-technical systems. Researchers from technical disciplines (e.g. computer science) with strong interest in social science research questions are also welcome. Applications for workshop participation are welcome from postdoctoral candidates across the globe (project grant proposals will later need at least one project partner based in Germany). Applicants for the workshop must match the funding criteria for cooperative research projects. In particular, the PhD must have been completed within the last three years prior to the deadline of project applications (after 15 June 2013). For further information see: https://www.volkswagenstiftung.de/fileadmin/downloads/merkblaetter/MB_107_e… -------------------- APPLICATION DETAILS -------------------- Deadline for submitting short applications to participate in the workshop is December 10, 2015. Applications should be submitted in English and consist of a brief personal motivation to participate (up to two pages) and a CV. Please send these two documents as pdf-version to css(at)volkswagenstiftung.de. The Foundation covers participation in the event as well as the cost of travel and accommodation. Participation in this workshop does in no way affect the chances of succeeding in acquiring a grant for a cooperative project; neither is it a prerequisite for submitting an application for a cooperative project (with deadline on 15 June 2016). -------------------- LOGISTICS -------------------- After a review process, successful applicants will be invited to join the networking workshop in Cologne. Notification of acceptance will be given in January 2016. Call for Papers, Internet Policy Review: "Doing Internet Governance"
by Francesca Musiani 12 Nov '15

12 Nov '15

Dear AoIR colleagues, Please find below and at this link http://policyreview.info/node/382 a call for papers for the Internet Policy Review that may be of interest for many of you. This CfP follows up to the similarly-titled panel that Dmitry Epstein, Christian Katzenbach and I organized at IR16 in Phoenix. Kind regards Francesca -- Special issue on 'Doing internet governance: practices, controversies, infrastructures, and institutions' *Call for papers of the Internet Policy Review* TOPIC & RELEVANCE Internet governance is gaining attention in the post-Snowden era, which increased distrust of formal government institutions and their ‘dangerous liaisons’ with the private sector. User-driven, technology-embedded, decentralised approaches keep on seeing the light: in contracts, currency, privacy protection, just to name a few. Politics and traditional purveyors of authority negotiate ways of readjusting to the changing environment. Thus, investigating the “ordering” (Flyverbom, 2011) and governing processes as they relate to the network of networks is both timely and important. Traditionally, when talking about Internet Governance researchers and practitioners refer to the new organisations and institutions that have been explicitly established to regulate, discuss, and negotiate issues of internet governance (e.g. ICANN, WSIS, IGF). Recently, authors have criticised this institutional focus, arguing the need for a more comprehensive conceptualisation of internet governance (DeNardis, 2012; Eeten/Mueller, 2013; Musiani, 2014; Hofmann et al., 2014). Among these recent developments, a small set of publications has drawn on perspectives from Science and Technology Studies (STS) to rethink and substantiate questions of ordering and governing the net. These contributions highlight the day-to-day, mundane practices that constitute internet governance, take into account the plurality and ‘‘networkedness’’ of devices and arrangements involved, and investigate the invisibility, pervasiveness, and apparent agency of the digital infrastructure itself (Musiani, 2014). Internet governance, in this view, is not only negotiated in dedicated institutions; the doing of internet governance more broadly consists in practices and controversies of the design, regulation, and use of material infrastructures. In this way, STS-informed perspectives are increasingly instrumental for challenging and expanding our understanding and for informing our examination of ordering and governing processes in the digital realm. SCOPE OF THE SPECIAL ISSUE This special issue seeks to nurture this nascent interest by pioneering a conversation on the governance of digitally networked environments from an STS-informed perspective and, more broadly, from perspectives that highlight the role of design, infrastructures, and informal communities of practice in governance. First, this issue will touch upon how the norms shaping the provision, design and usage of the internet are negotiated, de- and re-stabilised, and subject to controversies. Second, it will open up new, STS-informed perspectives on digital uses and practices, delving into the variety of ways in which they may be an integral part of today’s internet governance -- not only because such practices reflect belonging and commitment to a community, but because they allow issues of sovereignty, autonomy and liberty to come into play. Finally, expanding the notion of governance in internet governance through the conceptual tool-set of STS may open this field to meaningful contributions from scholars studying constitutional aspects of technology design and use, which are typically excluded from traditional internet governance literature. FOCUS OF THE PAPERS We invite papers that share a strong conceptual interest in understanding processes of ordering and governing the internet as a core infrastructure of our daily lives. More focused paper topics may include, but in no way are limited to, the following: - *Internet governance theory*: how can STS inform theoretical perspectives on internet governance? - *Controversies*: how do socio-technical internet-related controversies reveal tensions and critical junctures of internet politics? - *Privatisation*: what are the practices of internet governance privatisation? What does it mean for the internet as a socio-technical phenomenon? - *Unintended consequences*: what are the examples of unintended consequences of technology regulation and design that affect the openness, security, and stability of the internet? - *Re-intermediation and delegation*: what are the forms of re-intermediation of the “decentralised” system that is the internet? How can we study them? - *Participatory governance*: how can STS help unpack the practices of “multistakeholderism” and their potential effects (or lack thereof)? - *Infrastructures and architectures as governance arrangements*: how can STS-informed approaches help us unveil the power and control structures embedded in internet architecture? Submissions must be in clearly-written English. The *Internet Policy Review* is an open access, short-form journal. Full papers are requested to be around 30,000 characters (5,000 words) in length, to encourage concise and parsimonious discussion of core issues. SPECIAL ISSUE EDITORS - Dmitry Epstein, Department of Communication, University of Illinois at Chicago (dmitry(a)uic.edu) - Christian Katzenbach, Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (katzenbach(a)hiig.de) - Francesca Musiani, Institute for Communication Sciences, CNRS/Paris-Sorbonne/UPMC; *Internet Policy Review* academic editor ( francesca.musiani(a)cnrs.fr) IMPORTANT DATES *12 November 2015:* Release of the Call for papers *25 January 2016*: Deadline for expression of interest and abstract submissions (500 word abstracts) via the form on the IPR website. *15 February*: Feedback / Invitation to submit full text submissions *25 April*: Full text submissions deadline. G'day Gohar ! Thanks for this. As others have already pointed out, you won't be able to get all of those stats easily, and a number of them will be outdated almost as soon as you've gathered them. For small batches of general user details (as well as for most anything else that can be gathered through the Twitter APIs), though, I would very much recommend Erik Michaels-Ober's Ruby gem 't', which essentially provides a command-line interface to the Twitter API. It's available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and while - like most things Ruby - it's not the easiest to install, it's very handy for quickly getting the profile information for a batch of a few hundred user handles (or IDs), for instance. Output can be forced to CSV format using the -c or --csv switch. Details are at https://github.com/sferik/t, and Erik (@sferik) tends to be pretty helpful if you run into any trouble, too. > Date: Wed, 11 Nov 2015 11:59:05 +0900 > From: "Gohar F.
