Call for Panel, International Association for the Study of Commons, Regional European Meeting 2016, Bern

Of potential interest to AIR colleagues working on the digital commons > >*Call for Panels, Papers, and Posters * > >*for IASC Regional European Meeting, * > >*Bern, Switzerland, 10-13 May 2016 * > >*Commons in a ³Glocal² World: * > >*Global Connections and Local Responses* > >Venue: University of Bern, Main Building > >Organized by the Institute of Social Anthropology (ISA), the Centre for >Development and Environment (CDE), and the Institute of Geography (IG) >in collaboration with the Institute of History the World Trade Institute >(WTI), University of Bern, Switzerland > >Main theme: Global Connections and Local Responses Research on the >commons deals either with the development of institutions for the >management of the commons, or with issues related to global change. >While the latter mainly focusses on drivers and effects of global >expansion of capitalist modes of production, consumption, and societal >reproduction, research on institutions for the management of the commons >deals with collective action and the effects and reactions within local >action arenas. However, the entangled institutional processes through >which global and local arenas referred to as ³glocal² interlock are >not yet addressed in a systematic way. Europe has been a major driver of >³glocal² processes. Therefore, the 4th Regional European Meeting of the >IASC is devoted to global connections and local responses. It provides a >space to advance our understanding of ongoing ³glocal² processes and to >analyse historically how commons in Europe have evolved and adapted to >³glocal² changes. By integrating political ecology with approaches of >New Institutionalism and Critical Theory in Anthropology, Human >Geography, Political Science and History, we propose to investigate the >impacts of external changes on the perception and evaluation of >resources by actors related to the commons. This raises the question of >local bargaining power, ideologies and discourses, and of the selection >and crafting of institutional designs, which in turn affect the access >to common-pool resources, as well as the distribution of benefits >related to the management of these resources. > >This conference therefore aims to look at the interfaces between local >and global processes in order to bring together research arenas that >have often been kept quite separate until now. We therefore call for >contributions focussing on: > > how global players such as multinational companies and organizations >affect local governance of the commons worldwide > > the role of international law and global trade in shaping the >interface between global actors and institutional processes of local >commons governance > > the impacts of external economic and political changes on the >perception and evaluation of resources and areas by actors related to >the commons > > local resistance and the development of political strategies >countering the transformation of collective into private or state-based >property rights as a consequence of economic and political changes > > the local crafting of institutional designs in global and local >arenas, and how these affect access to and distribution of natural >resources and related benefits among local to global actors using the >commons > > how the encounter of global and local processes affect bargaining >power, ideologies and discourses of global and local actors in governing >sustainability trade-offs. > >We especially welcome contributions that aim to address the above >mentioned themes through novel forms of integrating theoretical >approaches. In addition, the focus of the conference will be on a >dialogue among representatives of different academic disciplines (e.g. >geography, social anthropology, history, development studies, economics, >political science, and law) and between academics and non-academic >actors (e.g. practitioners, business representatives, policy makers, or >NGOs). > >For any additional information, please >visit >http://www.iasc-commons.org/conferences/regional/2016-iasc-european-region >al-conference > >*Deadline for submitting panel abstracts is November 15, 2015 * > >Please send your panel abstract (500 words) with at least two potential >presenters > >In case you have a single paper or a poster this can also be submitted >at this deadline. CfP: Special Issue on Mining Social Semantics on the Social Web
by Robert Jäschke 10 Nov '15

10 Nov '15

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Call for papers: Special Issue on Mining Social Semantics on the Social Web In recent years the amount of data available on the social web has grown massively. Consequently, researchers have developed approaches that leverage this social web data to tackle interesting challenges of the semantic web. Among them are methods for learning ontologies from social media or crowdsourcing, extracting semantics from data collected by citizen science and participatory sensing initiatives, or for better understanding and describing user activities. The rich data provided by the social web can be used to learn and construct the semantic web. This can be facilitated by learning basic semantic relationships, e.g., between entities, or by employing more sophisticated methods that are able to construct a complete knowledge graph or ontology. Other methods enrich content from the social web and link it to the semantic web. The proposed special issue is open to all submissions that utilize data from the social web a) with the help of semantic web technologies, b) for inferring and extracting semantics, or c) for enriching and linking content with/to the semantic web or existing knowledge structures like the linked open data cloud. Any kind of data can be utilized as long as it has a connection with the social web, e.g., tags from Flickr, tweets from Twitter, check-ins from Foursquare, articles from Wikipedia, shared mobile sensor data, data from participatory mapping, crowd-sourced data, etc. Examples include approaches for inferring the semantics of tags, extracting semantics from Wikipedia articles, or enriching tweets with named entities. The resulting knowledge can be integrated into structures like the linked open data cloud. == Topics of Interest == We welcome original high quality submissions on (but are not restricted to) the following topics: - - linked open data and the social web - - machine learning for the semantic web on social web data - - semantic enrichment (e.g., sentiment detection, polarity, named entity recognition, ...) of user-generated texts (e.g., Wikipedia articles, tweets, blogs, …) - - extraction and modelling of arguments and discourse - - never-ending language learning from user-generated content - - ontology learning from user-generated content - - semantics of social tagging (e.g., inferring semantics of tags, identifying relationships between tags, learning ontologies from tags, ...) - - mining Wikipedia (e.g., extracting semantics from articles, semantic enrichment of articles, inter-language analyses, mining the Wikipedia category graph, ...) - - temporal and spatial semantics of content from the social web - - inferring semantics from user data, usage logs, mobile sensing, ... - - extracting location-based semantics from Foursquare, OpenStreetMap, ... - - leveraging crowd-sourcing for the semantic web - - capturing the semantics of user interactions - - inferring semantics from user data and usage logs == Submissions == 31 January 2016 - Paper submission deadline Submissions shall be made through the Semantic Web journal website at http://www.semantic-web-journal.net/. Prospective authors must take notice of the submission guidelines posted at http://www.semantic-web-journal.net/authors. Note that you need to request an account on the website for submitting a paper. Please indicate in the cover letter that it is for the special issue on Mining Semantics in/from the Social Web. Submissions are possible as full research papers or surveys. While there is no upper limit, the paper length must be justified by content. == Important Dates == - - Call for papers: September 2015 - - Submission deadline: 31 January 2016 - - Notification: 31 March 2016 == Guest editors == Please use the e-mail address social-semantic-issue(a)l3s.de for inquiries. - - Andreas Hotho, University of Würzburg, Germany - - Robert Jäschke, L3S Research Center, Germany - - Kristina Lerman, University of Southern California, United States <http://www.semantic-web-journal.net/blog/call-papers-special-issue-mining-s…> - -- Prof. Dr. Robert Jäschke L3S Research Center/Leibniz University Hannover http://www.kbs.uni-hannover.de/~jaeschke/ +49-(0)511-762-17775 <<<<< please participate: http://researchersontwitter.appspot.com/ >>>>> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1 iQIcBAEBAgAGBQJWQajgAAoJEPZY2c/EvlKYER0P/2X6/VU+DuOBU2o+3Q6yT4lO FBKrgTyp5OrTaF8yE2eJ70nd7MZeCZevMuu//Mg+U9wYlvhIOVm1NTMS12UEDj/j bxaCkl0p+E4RX6VuDsUlJtC/Pk+3Wr/Ya6DP8BwX19txs1bK2zfYdMg7HXxDdeUs c2cTlmbpekY2ZYUxkX4Dpd2/QQvxFMh/kVe11d5npq33fW4Ydb7Mdp5jqI9/TZ7D tV0GmzoqEBoBDbdXkaKkmlbY776gEoEpvp/oYetofUjC+ks0vr29J/YPsKF2/RaE ohwrN1O/2voTG0lTTIvZ+/G7sfbJCkpYYLKgePC/IrzCv8ROvmV7F8lR1ADvIVfD f4jbLed7If4IN0ow1dFwJfyncMVvMnjQZrZFnQM7aME4wXMaOhAh9L/ol2vHHGJp qrHXHg1JPP/3ECPZ6tu4/IlaqyzBhQZD+jqjLydCabqI/HI3nyREmO0HaGed6zYO asvC3LLZw0RnjRME+1aU4h6Modd8xwZHvDUXOkmd+gtg5MqKiEXdvvfiSLPUzf8q LWH9siKeabeGYKgx33DSsKB3w3a66nMOzwvFt0FwQ+76ljez8B7gAWVQ2BT76ixa Q8HbjbFZLQJNRNMgdq+AxMz+Qz4jhmtgXY2hU1YXW6VeV6Xi1Pqa8viA/hGsrM5J Iq3oOVqNIxYcaZlsOFet =QZR1 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
