The event hopes to bring together national and international academics and practitioners working at the crossroads of audiovisual cultural production and transnational trade and consumption of audiovisual products. We would like academics and professionals to consider presenting a paper or project and attending the conferences and discussions at the three-day event. Cultural Transduction may be understood as the process sustained by any product from a given cultural market that has transcended the original market and extended beyond the place where the original idea or product was designed. In this particular conference, Cultural Transduction will be addressed in the case of audiovisual products (films, television programs, videogames, music videos, machinimas, animated gifs, and the like). Main topics of the Cultural Transduction Conference are: - Adaptation and localization of audiovisual products - Translation, subtitling, dubbing and close-captioning - International format trade - Cultural Universals and Lacunae - Cultural proximity, cultural discount and shareability - Co-productions and transnational production/exhibition - Videogame development and localization - Fan-dubs, fan-fiction, and other forms of audience appropriation and convergence - Intercultural audiovisual production - Authorship, Copyright and Copy-left legislation in international contexts - Cultural and media imperialism - Influences, intertextuality and parody in audiovisual products - Memes, repetitions and copycats We would request that all interested parties send a 300-400 word abstract on the topic and focus of the presentation or project including a title, keywords and a biography of the author of up to 100 words by January 22nd, 2016. Quisiéramos que tanto investigadores como profesionales consideren enviar sus propuestas de presentaciones o proyectos y asistan a las conferencias y discusiones durante los tres días del evento. Syracuse University call for doctoral applicants
by Jennifer Stromer-Galley 05 Nov '15

05 Nov '15

Syracuse University's School of Information Studies welcomes applicants for our doctoral program. Admitted students are assured of at least four year's funding (including summers) along with tuition and other support. The interdisciplinary nature of our program is visible through the backgrounds of the 30 current doctoral students. These students hail from ten countries and have academic training in the social sciences, communications, business, computer science, librarianship, linguistics, information science, and others areas. Our doctoral program is a welcoming and inclusive place for scholars from under-represented populations, something we see as a defining element of our program. Doctoral students pursue individualized course plans that are tuned to their particular research interests and needs. This means advising and, more importantly, close working relationships with faculty members is a cornerstone of the Syracuse University iSchool Ph.D. program. This is why it is both residential and full-time. We celebrate the success of our recent graduates who are taking up tenure-track positions in premier research institutions and exceptional liberal arts colleges, excelling in academic and policy think tanks, and pursuing entrepreneurial success! Current students are earning awards for their publications and dissertation work, continuing a long tradition of such recognition. For 2016, we are particularly interested in speaking with applicants and seeing applications from those whose interests align with one or more of the following research areas + Text and data mining, Natural Language Processing and Information Retrieval + Computational social science, visualization, and data analytics + Agent-based modeling + Information policy, Internet governance, and telecommunications policy + Librarianship + Mobile computing + Data infrastructure and services in support of research + Organizational impacts of ICTs (e.g., Citizen Science, FLOSS, Wikipedia, mobile work, distributed scientific collaboration, and infrastructure studies) + Information security and privacy + Social computing, social media, social networks, and crowdsourcing + Wireless telecommunications policy and telecommunication service markets You can learn more about the Syracuse iSchool faculty and interests at https://ischool.syr.edu/research/faculty-research-areas/. You can learn more about the doctoral program and application (due 3 January, 2016) at https://ischool.syr.edu/academics/graduate/doctoral/information-science-and…. CFP: Theorizing the Web 2016
by David Banks 05 Nov '15

05 Nov '15

Theorizing the Web 2015 April 15–16 in New York City Venue: the Museum of the Moving Image, in Queens Abstract submission deadline: 11:59 pm (EST), January 24, 2016 Theorizing the Web is an annual event featuring critical, conceptual discussions about technology and society. We began in 2011 to advance a different kind of conversation about the Web, one which recognizes that to theorize technology is also to theorize the self and the social world. Given that technology is inseparable from society, the ideas and approaches that have historically been used to describe social reality must not be abandoned. Instead, these historical approaches must be applied, reworked, and reassessed in light of the developing digitization of social life. We are now seeking presentations for our sixth annual event, which will take place on April 15 and 16 at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York City. We invite submissions that engage with issues of social power, inequality, vulnerability, and justice from a diverse range of perspectives. Theorizing the Web is not an event just for academics or “tech” thinkers: activists, journalists, technologists, writers, artists, and folks who don’t identify as any of the above are all encouraged to submit a presentation abstract. We are looking for abstracts that feature clear conceptual arguments and that avoid jargon in favor of more broadly accessible critical insight. Submissions on any topic are welcome, but some specific topics we’d like to address this year include: --moving images, gifs, video, live streaming, copcams --social photography, filters, selfies, posing --race, racism, race posturing, ethnicity, #BlackLivesMatter --sex, gender, feminism, queer and trans* politics --sexuality, sexting, sex work, consent --mental health, illness, neurodiversity --(dis)ability and ableism --non-Western Web(s), language barriers, hegemony, globalization --social movements, protest, revolution, social control, censorship --hate, harassment, intimidation, trolling, bullying, resistance --pain, sickness, loss, death and dying --parenting, birth, life course --bodies, cyborgs, wearables, trans/post-humanism, bots --the self, identity, subjectivity, (in)authenticity, impression management --privacy, publicity, surveillance --encryption, anonymity, pseudonymity --presence, proximity, face-to-face, (dis)connection, loneliness --capitalism, Silicon Valley, venture capital --crowd funding, micro currencies, crypto currencies, blockchains --work, labor, “gig” or “sharing” economy, “Uber for”, exploitation --transportation, self-driving cars, drones, cities --code, affordances, infrastructure, critical design --knowledge, “big” data, data science, algorithms, positivism --memes, virality, metrics, (micro-)celebrity, fame, attention, click-baiting --underground markets, child porn, revenge porn, the extra-legal web --fiction, literature, visual narratives, storytelling, self-publishing, fandoms --time, (a)temporality, ephemerality, history, memory, right to forget --games, gaming, gamification, free-to-play, fantasy sports, gambling --elections, campaigns, presidential politics Successful abstracts will address intersections of gender, race, class, age, sexual orientation, disability, and other forms of inequality as they pertain to any of the topics above. Abstract submissions should be 300 to 500 words (only the first 500 words will be reviewed). Arguments should be scaled to fit 12-minute panel presentations, and titles should appeal to a general audience. Your submission should not only describe your topic and question but also summarize your thinking and your conclusions. Good abstracts will provide a specific, original argument with clear stakes. Please do not ask questions in your abstract without answering them, or state “I will make an argument about X” without making the argument. Note that, because Theorizing the Web deeply values public engagement, we expect all TtW16 presentations to be both comprehensible and rewarding to people from outside the presenter’s specific areas of expertise. Abstract submissions are due by 11:59 EST on January 24, 2016, and can be submitted through our form located at theorizingtheweb.org/submit. The TtW16 selection committee will blindly review all submissions. Space is limited, and selection is competitive. Our acceptance rate is typically 20% to 35%. Please note that we have a separate submissions process for art and alternative-format presentations. If you would like to participate in some way that isn’t giving a spoken presentation (e.g., displaying a piece of art; giving a performance; doing something else entirely), please use this separate submission form: http://tinyurl.com/ttw16alt Registration for Theorizing the Web remains “pay what you can,” and we ask that you donate whatever amount you deem fair or can afford (minimum $1). More information (including the registration form) can be found at theorizingtheweb.tumblr.com/2016/registration. Stay tuned to theorizingtheweb.org for announcements about invited panels, and mail us at theorizingtheweb(a)gmail.com if you would like to help out with our all-volunteer event in any way. The conference hashtag is #TtW16. <3

Online Behaviours of Convicted UK Terrorists
by Maura Conway 05 Nov '15

05 Nov '15

Dear All, Apologies for self-promotion, but I thought some AoIRers might be interested in the following: *What are the Roles of the Internet in Terrorism? Measuring Online Behaviours of Convicted UK Terrorists * Paul Gill, Emily Corner, Amy Thornton & Maura Conway Using a unique dataset of 227 convicted UK-based terrorists, this report fills a large gap in the existing literature. Using descriptive statistics, we first outline the degree to which various online activities related to radicalisation were present within the sample. The results illustrate the variance in behaviours often attributed to ‘online radicalisation’. Second, we conducted a smallest-space analysis to illustrate two clusters of commonly co-occurring behaviours that delineate behaviours from those directly associated with attack planning. Third, we conduct a series of bivariate and multivariate analyses to question whether those who interact virtually with like-minded individuals or learn online, exhibit markedly different experiences (e.g. radicalisation, event preparation, attack outcomes) than those who do not. http://voxpol.eu/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/DCUJ3518_VOX_Lone_Actors_report… Regards, Maura *Dr. Maura Conway* *Senior Lecturer in International Security *School of Law and Government Dublin City University Glasnevin Dublin 9 Ireland Tel. +353 1 700 6472 E-Mail. maura.conway(a)dcu.ie Skype. galwaygrrl Twitter: @galwaygrrl Website: http://doras.dcu.ie/view/people/Conway,_Maura.html ********** VOX-Pol Project on Violent Online Political Extremism Website: http://www.voxpol.eu Twitter: @VOX_Pol -- *Email Disclaimer"This e-mail and any files transmitted with it are confidential and are intended solely for use by the addressee. ACM Hypertext 2016: Call for Workshop/Tutorial Proposals (Deadline January 15, 2016) =============================================================== HYPERTEXT 2016 27th ACM Conference on Hypertext and Social Media 10-13 July 2016 - Halifax, Canada http://ht.acm.org/ht2016/ IMPORTANT DATES January 15, 2016: Workshop/tutorial proposals due February 5, 2016: Decisions announced July 10, 2016: Workshop/tutorial day WORKSHOP/TUTORIAL CHAIR Dongwon Lee, Penn State University, dongwon(a)psu.edu -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The ACM Hypertext conference is a premium venue for high quality peer-reviewed research on hypertext theory, systems and applications. It is concerned with all aspects of modern hypertext research including social media, semantic web, dynamic and computed hypertext and hypermedia as well as narrative systems and applications. The ACM Hypertext 2016 conference will focus on missing links on the WWW: how can the Hypertext paradigm and research inspire and improve the Web? Which missing links (and linking paradigms) can improve connections, communication and collaboration? Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit either workshop or tutorial proposals to be held in conjunction with Hypertext 2016. The workshops and tutorials will provide participants with opportunities to discuss, explore, and learn emerging areas of Hypertext and Social Media with fellow students, researchers, and practitioners from Industry and Academia. The workshop/tutorial proceedings will be published in the Hypertext 2016 Extended Proceedings. WORKSHOP PROPOSALS The goals of the workshops are to provide a more informal setting for exchanging opinions, to share experiences, presenting ideas, foster research community and identify open problems and/or explore directions for future research. As such, they also offer a good opportunity for researchers to present their work and to obtain feedback from an interested community in an interactive atmosphere. Proposals are especially encouraged on emerging topics, related to the main conference tracks (i.e., missing links on the WWW), but may also include other (novel) topics which might be of interest for the hypertext community. Acceptance of workshop proposals will be based on the experience and background of the organizers in the topic, and on the relevance of the subject matter with regard to the topics addressed in the main conference. We welcome proposals for different types of workshops, from working groups on a specific topic to more traditional conference-like workshops. However, we prefer “interactive” workshops that guarantee richer active interactions among participants and provide significant room for controversial and stimulating discussions. Potential proposers are invited to discuss their ideas with the workshop chair before working out a detailed proposal. Send your workshop proposals (in PDF format) by email to the workshop/tutorial chair, with the following information: - Title of the workshop and suggested acronym - Keywords (describing the main themes) - Abstract - Description of the workshop (topics and goals) - Relevance of the workshop to Hypertext 2016 - Workshop organizers bios (1-2 paragraphs per organizer) - Motivation (why the topic is of interest for the conference audience) - Workshop and submission formats - Length (half day or full day- in this case, motivation for the need of a full day) - Previous editions of the workshop series, if applicable (URLs, conference it was co-located with, number of registrants, number of submissions, number of accepted papers, and any other relevant information) - Any plan for further publication (e.g., special issue in journals) - Initial list of (potential) members of the program committee TUTORIAL PROPOSALS As part of the Hypertext 2016 program, in addition, we cordially invite proposals for tutorials from active researchers and experienced tutors in academia, industry, and government agencies. Ideally, a tutorial will cover the state-of-the-art research and ideas, innovative developments, and novel applications in a specific aspect of hypertext and social media, but proposals are especially encouraged on emerging topics, related to the main conference tracks (i.e., missing links on the WWW). Send your tutorial proposal (in PDF format) by email to the workshop/tutorial chair with the following information: - Title of the tutorial - Keywords (describing the main themes of the tutorial) - Abstract - Description of the tutorial (topics and goals) - Tutorial presenters biographies (1-2 paragraphs per presenter) - Length of tutorial (1.5 or 3 hours) - Expected background and prerequisite of audience - Relevance of the tutorial to Hypertext 2016 - A list of references/resources to be covered in the tutorial - Previous editions of the tutorial, if presenters have given similar tutorials elsewhere The accepted proposal presenters should provide comprehensive tutorial notes or slides to the tutorial audience free of charge. -- ------------------------------------------------------- Dipl.-Ing. For example, Alibaba’s initial public offering in 2014 was ranked world’s biggest at $25 Billion; Wechat, the fastest rising social media app developed by Tencent, achieved a user base of 440 million within four years of its release. By February 2015, Chinese Internet users have reached 641 million, more than double the number of users in the U.S. Numbers aside, however, there have not been much academic research on the regulatory context, the political and economic dynamics, as well as the broader implications at both domestic and global levels of such fast-pace development. For instance, there are increasing efforts from the Chinese government and elites to articulate alternative frameworks over the global governance of the Internet and new media industries. This preconference intends to serve as a platform to facilitate dialogues around *the political, the economic, the institutional and the policy aspects* of media industries in China, in view of the rapid development of digital media. But this is not just about having ‘China experts’ analyzing Chinese companies or Chinese policies. We are keen to move beyond the ‘China exceptionalism” by taking *an explicitly global and comparative perspective*. For one thing, the ownership structure and the business practices of Chinese digital media companies are intricately related to global capitalism in general. For another, Chinese information technology companies, such as Baidu, Alibaba, ZTE and Huawei, are aggressively expanding their businesses overseas, especially in Africa and South East Asia, with varied degrees of success. Last but not the least, through platforms like the National Office for Internet and Information, and channels like the Sino-US Internet Forum, the Chinese authorities are actively participating in the construction of international and global policy frames concerning the future development of digital media industries. With the global reach of Chinese IT companies and the international ambition of Chinese government, it is imperative to understand how the new developments in Chinese digital media industries, are reconfiguring the politics and the economics of information and communication technologies (ICTs). Moreover, it is important to understand how traditional media such as mainstream newspapers respond to such changes and incorporate digitalization into their own industry plans. This preconference aims to invite scholars from all over the world to tackle the issue, primarily using China as a context in which innovative research questions and methods can be applied. We are particularly interested in papers that address the following themes: · The globalization and internationalization of Chinese media industries, including both Internet and other traditional media · The roles of international regulatory bodies and international non-governmental organizations in shaping the landscape of new media in China · The roles of Chinese authorities in shaping global policies regarding information and communication technologies (ICTs) · The economics of Chinese new ICT companies, including foreign and local venture capitalists, shareholders, business models, sources of profits, consumer strategy, etc. · The evolving political parallelism in Chinese media industry · Comparisons of Chinese new media industry with other countries’ media industry *Abstract Submissions* Please submit a 500-words abstract in word or pdf format to ica15china(a)gmail.com. All submissions will be subject to a double-blind review by at least 2 reviewers. To facilitate the review process, please write a separate cover sheet with the paper title and affiliation/s and omit the affiliations in the actual abstract. *Deadlines* · Submission of abstracts: Jan 15th 2016 · Notification of acceptance: March 1st 2016 · Final paper submission: June 1st 2016 -- Weiyu Zhang (PhD, UPenn) Associate Professor Department of Communication and New Media National University of Singapore
