CFP: Haptic Media Studies Call for papers for a themed issue of NEW MEDIA & SOCIETY Guest editors: David Parisi, Mark Paterson, and Jason Archer Abstracts due (400-500 words): November 1, 2015 Interacting with, navigating, and manipulating media has always depended on touch--whether turning pages, folding paper, depressing buttons, typing on keys, or twisting knobs, there is always an act of touching at the heart of mediated communication. The recent rise of touchscreen and gestural interfaces, mobile computing, video gaming, wearable communication devices, and emerging virtual reality platforms disrupts the previous material stability of these media interfaces, prompting the adoption of new, embodied navigational habits. At the material level, we now touch media in novel ways, becoming accustomed to their shape, size, texture, temperature, and weight, while also learning to be receptive to the signals media objects transmit to us through a hitherto seemingly dormant tactile channel. Media Studies, under the sway of an ocularcentrism operating in western culture more broadly, has long neglected considerations of touch, however. Insofar as it does attend to hapticality or tactility, the discipline frequently mobilizes an ideologically-loaded, intuitionistic theory that assigns this sense modality an essential set of immutable physiological qualities. Unlike visuality, which admits of some complexity with regard to the modality of sight and its dominance in the sensory hierarchy, especially within dedicated fields of scholarship such as ‘visual culture’, hapticality seems by contrast unwavering and constant, grounded in the body’s stable biological reality. Lacking a formalized, comprehensive, empirically-grounded account of touch’s historical and cultural life, Media Studies feeds forward the idea that touch is physiologically immediate and by its nature experiential, and consequently exists outside of—and above—history and culture. By contrast, empirically-informed accounts of touch outside of Media Studies render altogether different, and far more dynamic, conceptions of touch: Sensory Anthropology, Art History, Literary Theory, Computer Science, Education, Cognitive Science, and Architecture each approach touch with priorities and biases idiosyncratic to their fields. It is to foster a tradition of Media Studies that locates touch at the starting point of its analysis that we seek contributions around the theme of Haptic Media Studies. Like the fields of Sound Studies and Visual Culture before it, a touch-oriented media studies emerges as “an intellectual reaction to changes in culture and technology” (Sterne, “Sonic Imaginations,” 3). Our project here is to reconsider or rewrite extant accounts of media and thereby emphasize a previously-neglected sensory dimension of mediatic experience. Inevitably, such a reorientation will involve a new set of theoretical questions, historical considerations, interdisciplinary connections, and research methods to arrive at a theoretically literate and empirically-grounded understanding of mediatic touch. At the outset of this endeavor, then, it is tempting to offer a haptocentric Media Studies as a counterpoint to the ocularcentric, and more recently, aural-centric ones that it attempts to displace. Instead, perhaps we think of this not so much as a displacement through re-centering, but as a new orientation for Media Studies that prompts us to be attentive to the haptic relations always already at the core of mediatic experiences. By advancing a touch-oriented tradition of Media Studies we hope to help make the field adequate to the shifting configuration of media interfacing practices, expanding its borders outward to encompass a sensory modality previously treated in a largely haphazard and piecemeal fashion. Further, by building upon and synthesizing the accounts of touch scattered throughout the works of media and communication theorists such as Marshall McLuhan, John Durham Peters, Mark B. N. Hansen, Richard Grusin, W. J. T. Mitchell, and Erkki Huhtamo, this new orientation to the haptic positions Media Studies to productively contribute to the conversations about touch that occur outside its disciplinary borders. Beaudoin, PhD, Professor, Texas A&M University Traci Hong, PhD, Associate Professor, Texas A&M University Overview In our global society where diseases know no borders, countries are increasingly recognizing the importance of improving health conditions both domestically and abroad. The World Health Organization has documented that infectious diseases are emerging and spreading at the fasted pace ever in history. The ease of international travel heightens pandemic concerns with the emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases such as Ebola and swine flu. Global health concerns also include non-communicable "lifestyle diseases" such as obesity and illicit substance and tobacco use, which are now leading causes of disability and death worldwide. Given the prevalence and severity of global diseases, it is becoming more incumbent of countries to prevent and detect infectious and "lifestyle" diseases for not only their own populations, but also populations beyond their borders as a means to securing political and economic stability. In the United States, a goal of Healthy People 2020 is to "strengthen U.S. national security through global disease detection, response, prevention, and control strategies." Mediated communication-in the context of journalism, advertising, public relations, and strategic communication-is an effective mechanism for detecting, responding to, preventing, and controlling global health concerns. At no time in history are media more prolific and widely available to everyday citizens. More than 40% of the world's population is online, and more than half use mobile phones, with Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa being the two largest mobile markets. By 2020, almost 85% of the global online population will access the Internet from their mobile phone. Despite the rapid proliferation of new media, traditional media like television and radio remain pervasive and formidable conduits for disseminating health information. Radio, especially in the developing world, is highly accessible and effective in reaching rural and isolated regions. In the current media landscape, it is becoming increasingly possible for just about anyone and any organization in the world to consume, create, and contribute media content pertinent to global health concerns. Journalism, advertising, public relations and strategic communication can provide dynamic solutions to global health concerns. Papers We invite contributions to a special issue of Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly on "Advances in Global Health Communication." This issue conceives "global" in a broad sense. Global health communication encompasses issues related to media and health that span countries, as well as those that are common within different countries, with media broadly conceived to include new and old media pertinent to journalism, advertising, public relations, health media campaigns, and other forms of strategic communication. We encourage submissions that approach this topic from an inclusive range of fields and research methodologies within journalism and mass communication, as well as from related disciplines. Submissions should provide advancement in theory and methodology on the topic of global health communication. Papers may offer insights about issues of human behavior, technology, policy, law, etc. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: * Media campaign processes and effects * Health news content * Role of the media in promoting health and well-being for people with disabilities * Implementation of public relations strategies to engage health audiences * International and national policy in governing global health information flows * Use of advertising strategies for health advancement including the promotion of healthy products and services Topics can also be specific to new media technologies and theory, including: * Online health information consumption and contribution * Microblog postings about health pandemics and concerns * Effects of online cancer support groups * Use of mobile technologies for health purposes These studies can focus on one particular nation, populations across nations, or transnational issues and processes. This special issue lends itself to research from a variety of cultural and international perspectives, with papers with international and intercultural approaches particularly encouraged. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches are welcome in this submission. Details of Submission and Due Date Papers will undergo blind peer review. Those selected for publication will then enter the editorial publication process, resulting in publication online in January 2017 and in print in Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly in summer 2017. Anyone wants to share their must-read with me? I'm teaching another undergraduate course this upcoming semester in the field of digital anthropology. The seminars title: "On the power of numbers: How databases and quantification now do (their) work in everyday life (and how they have always done so?). The title is a bit cryptic, but the idea is that I do want to explore today's phenomenon of big data by contrasting it with other forms/ways of quantification(s) (e.g. statistics, etc.) that have already had an influence on our lifes for much longer time than today's databases, social network sites or algorithms. Or to put it differently: to understand big data I want to look on how numbers have been unfolding their power in different times of history. Using theoretical texts, I want my students to acquire knowledge on the key concepts of "big data" "databases", "numbers" and "quantifications". How can we think these phenomena today? How can we relate them to power? How to they rule and govern our lifes, but also how are they challenged and reworked? And, lasts but not least, how can we apply such concepts in order to better understand todays digital developments in many spheres of (everday) life (from health to sharing economy to body conceptions, etc.)? My idea would be to teach two types of concepts: a.) "new" Cultural and Social Anthropological concepts and theories that explicitly talk about and refer to digital phenomena as in "big data", "databases", "algorithms", etc. b.) "classical" ones that do NOT explicitly talk about these issues, but that you would consider highly applicable to understand such phenomena (e.g. work on statistics, quantifications, numbers, etc.). I'd be very happy if you, once again, shared your knowledge and insights with me and my students.
