Must reads on "conceptions of power of numbers/big data"

Dear all, Again, eager to start yet another list of literature :) ...the issue at stake this time: ethnographic and/or anthropological work on the power of numbers (with a specific focus on big data)! Anyone wants to share their must-read with me? I'm teaching another undergraduate course this upcoming semester in the field of digital anthropology. The seminars title: "On the power of numbers: How databases and quantification now do (their) work in everyday life (and how they have always done so?). The title is a bit cryptic, but the idea is that I do want to explore today's phenomenon of big data by contrasting it with other forms/ways of quantification(s) (e.g. statistics, etc.) that have already had an influence on our lifes for much longer time than today's databases, social network sites or algorithms. Or to put it differently: to understand big data I want to look on how numbers have been unfolding their power in different times of history. Using theoretical texts, I want my students to acquire knowledge on the key concepts of "big data" "databases", "numbers" and "quantifications". How can we think these phenomena today? How can we relate them to power? How to they rule and govern our lifes, but also how are they challenged and reworked? And, lasts but not least, how can we apply such concepts in order to better understand todays digital developments in many spheres of (everday) life (from health to sharing economy to body conceptions, etc.)? My idea would be to teach two types of concepts: a.) "new" Cultural and Social Anthropological concepts and theories that explicitly talk about and refer to digital phenomena as in "big data", "databases", "algorithms", etc. b.) "classical" ones that do NOT explicitly talk about these issues, but that you would consider highly applicable to understand such phenomena (e.g. work on statistics, quantifications, numbers, etc.). I'd be very happy if you, once again, shared your knowledge and insights with me and my students. Dear all, About half a year ago, I wrote an email to this list asking for some help on specific literature on "space/place" for the purpose of teaching... "...discuss how digitalization/digitization changes todays places/spaces and our conceptions of those (physical, social, political, urban, hybrid, etc.). By "digitalization/digitization" I mean the empirical - material and symbolic - phenomena, not the concept (e.g. locative media-in-use, digital infrastructures, social media, etc.). Using theoretical texts, I want them to acquire knowledge on the key concepts of "space" and/or "place". How can we think space and/or place? Wikipedia Sampling

Hi All, Just a brief question for the list: I'm considering doing a study that looks at the edit histories of a sample of Wikipedia articles, and I'm wondering if there are accepted strategies for assembling a "representative" sample of Wikipedia articles akin to the way that, say, television researchers put together a composite week for content analyses. Obviously any sampling strategy will come with limitations, upsides, and downsides. I'm mostly curious as to whether there are accepted sampling methods that have emerged in the literature dealing with Wikipedia. Thanks! Proposed Special Issue on *Veillance and Transparency: A Critical Examination of Mutual Watching in the Post-Snowden, Big Data Era* *Guest Editors: Vian Bakir, Martina Feilzer, Andrew McStay (Bangor Univ.)* We invite papers for a proposed Special Issue in Big Data and Society, Sage’s inter-disciplinary, open access, peer-reviewed scholarly journal that explores the social implications of Big Data from social sciences, humanities and computing perspectives. *Our central proposition:* today we live in a techno-cultural condition of increased and normalised transparency through various veillant forces of mutual watching. *Our central question: *what are the technical, social, economic, political, legal, ethical and cultural implications of this situation? Drawing on the many academic disciplines that deal with issues of veillance and transparency, we seek theoretical and empirical academic papers; artistic, activist and educational provocations (the journal can link to digital versions of these); and shorter commentary from the wide range of actors involved in these debates (including data regulators, intelligence and security services, private companies, NGOs, politicians and journalists). Specifically, we are interested in the following questions (each unpacked further below): 1. On Theory-Practice: How useful are theories of ‘veillance’ in explaining transparency practices in the post-Snowden, ‘Big Data’ era? 2. On Ethics, Values and Norms: What, if anything, can or should we do about practices of watching that operate without informed consent or adequate processes of accountability? 3. On Regulation, Power, Resistance and Social Change: Are existing mechanisms of regulation and oversight able to deal with nation-states’ desire for forced transparency, or is resistance required 4. On Representation, Discourse and Public Understanding: What socio-cultural discourses and practices on veillance and transparency prevail; how do they position the sur/sous/veillant subject; and are they adequate to the task of educating and engaging people on abstract and secretive surveillance practices, as well as on the possibilities and pitfalls of sousveillance? Please let me know if you have any questions! *Queering code/space: difference, disorientation and the digital* 112th Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers | San Francisco, CA | March 29 – April 2, 2016 Organizers: Lizzie Richardson (University of Cambridge) and Daniel Cockayne (University of Kentucky) In this session we examine the relationship between digital or code/spaces (Kitchin and Dodge, 2011) and the orientation of bodies in, towards, and through these spaces. We are interested in how technologically attuned bodies might be read, sorted, included in or excluded from spaces saturated with digital technology (Ash 2013; Kinsley 2014; Rose 2015). We invite contributors to consider how the ‘binary’ constitution of the digital might intersect with forms of gendered performativity, viscosities of race and productions of sexuality (Saldana 2007; Giffney and Hird 2008; Colebrook 2009; Braidotti 2013; Barad 2014; Johnston 2015). How are bodies orientated through code/space and how does the body, embodiment, and subjectivity make a difference to code/space? The session builds on research exploring the ways that code/spaces remake bodies through the imposition of various forms of discipline, and how code/spaces offer forms of biopolitical securitization to manage those bodies through the production of machine-readable ‘appropriately orientated’ subjects via technological mediation and profiling (Adey, 2008; Martin, 2010; Klauser, Paasche and Söderström, 2014). Further, ‘online spaces’ offer particular ways of knowing the world (Elwood and Leszczynski, 2011; 2012), notably through online mapping technologies that produce selective ways of seeing urban landscapes, often resulting in the digital (in)visibility of certain individuals, populations, and spaces over others (Brown and Knopp, 2008). Drawing too on scholarship that has examined how embodied difference shapes and is shaped by processes of production (McDowell, 1991; 1997; 2015), the session considers the practices and imaginaries that inform the making of code/spaces. For example, high technology and digital media sectors have been critiqued for valorising a masculine entrepreneurial narratives that perpetuates a sexist and heteronormative work culture (Gill, 2002; Marwick, 2013; Massey, 1995) while maintaining allegedly ‘progressive’ and ‘liberal’ principles of horizontality, collaboration, sharing and openness (Ettlinger, 2014; Turner, 2004). How might a queering of code/space, or the creation of queer code/spaces, challenge such normative orders of production, potentially disorientating linear spatio-temporal narratives of digital technology as the necessary progenitor of development and progress? We want to explore the ambivalence and ambiguity of code/spaces as they pertain to bodily difference and orientation: their constitution as both an “informatics of domination” and an opportunity for cyborgian hybridity (Haraway, 1991). Code/spaces involve gradations of experiences that cannot be considered apolitical or gender neutral (Leszczynski and Elwood 2015), presenting the possibility of both a society of control (Deleuze, 1992) and the radical potential for a transformative disorientation of spaces and bodies (Ahmed, 2006). We invite speakers to think through the potential for code/spaces to both encourage and curtail various forms of difference and (hetero)normativity, through either *a queering of code/space*, or a *queer critique* of the cultures of whiteness, maleness, and straightness that code/spaces might perpetuate. Papers could explore but should not be limited to: - sorting, profiling and mapping/mediation of bodies through code/space - feminist, queer, anti-racist politics/activism and the digital - productions of difference and ‘digital divisions of labour’ - processes of making code/spaces - theoretical and empirical explorations of ‘net neutrality’ and ‘digital discrimination’ - differentiated experiences of (digital) platforms, intermediaries and ‘sharing’ - queering narratives/imaginaries of technological progress and disruption - gradations and differentiated experiences of connectivity - difference, performativity and anonymity in online contexts - the (dis)orientation of affective attunements (e.g. pleasure, desire, pain, boredom, distraction) through the digital For abstract submissions please email Lizzie Richardson (lizzie .richardson(a)geog.cam.ac.uk) and Daniel Cockayne (daniel.cockayne(a)uky.edu) before October 15th.
