Apologies for cross-postings. --------------------------- Call for Submissions --------------------------- ACM IUI 2016: ACM Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sonoma, CA, USA March 7 - 10, 2016 http://iui.acm.org/ ACM IUI 2016 is the 21st annual meeting of the intelligent interfaces community and serves as a premier international forum for reporting outstanding research and development on intelligent user interfaces. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI) community. We are also very interested in contributions from related fields, such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design, the arts, etc. The conference brings together people from academia, industry and non-profit organizations and gives its participants the opportunity to present and see cutting-edge IUI work in an focused and interactive setting. It is large enough to be diverse and lively (we expect over 200 people), but small enough to allow for extensive interaction among attendees and easy attendance to the events that the conference offers, ranging from oral paper presentations, poster sessions, workshops, panels and doctoral consortium for graduate students. IUI 2016 especially encourages submissions on innovative and visionary new concepts or directions for the design of intelligent interfaces. We do not require evaluations with users, but we do expect papers to include an appropriate evaluation for their stated contribution. Accepted papers will appear in the ACM Digital Library and citation indices. Full papers (10 pages with unlimited references) should make substantial, novel and relevant contributions to the field. Short papers (4 pages with unlimited references) can either contain smaller contributions or novel work that is still progress. Accepted full papers will be invited for oral presentation and short papers either as oral or poster presentation. The media lab will be an inter-departmental unit that will carry out teaching and research activities in several disciplines including: communication, management, psychology, education, design, and information and computer science. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to establish and to head a lab that will be a hub of teaching and research activities at the highest international academic standards. However, given the interdisciplinary nature of the position, the faculty member’s final departmental affiliation will be determined based on his or her disciplinary background. Best, Daniela *Doctoral Research Opportunity: STS meets Design* Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering, University of Washington Tactile and Tactical Design Lab, Professor Daniela Rosner The Tactile and Tactical Design Lab (TAT Lab) at the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) at the University of Washington, Seattle, is seeking a PhD student to begin fall 2016. Under an NSF-funded research fellowship, t he PhD student will explore questions of craft and materiality emerging around the integration of computing technology in traditional handwork practices , from ship building to weaving . Possible p rojects include: - Investigating the communicative dimensions of emerging tools for digital fabrication - Tracing the historical development of craft and DIY practices in modern maker cultures - Understanding the shifting dynamics between creativity, care, and repair in the adoption of computational technologies - Examining questions of gender and technical labor across sites and infrastructures of craftwork. Seeking Case Studies on Data Ethics

The Council for Big Data, Ethics, and Society is seeking researchers, practitioners, and educators to provide case studies based on real-world examples that examine complex issues of data ethics. Submissions will be distributed via the Council’s website in addition to Data & Society and the National Online Ethics Center. Case study authors will be given an honorarium of $250 per case study and may be invited for further participation in our growing network of data ethics researchers, educators, and practitioners. A case study should describe a real-world situation in which an ethical conundrum arose, and how responding to that situation introduced conflicting ethical duties, responsibilities, or principles. Situations used for case studies may involve data collection, publishing, aggregation, or analytics and illustrate topics such as privacy/de-identification, accuracy and quality control, cultural representation, oversight and accountability, or social outcomes of research. Examples from industry, government, and academia are welcome. Completed case studies will become part of a collection of pedagogical resources for instructors covering data ethics in various fields, and will be used to generate discussion through live and/or online discussion forums of part of ongoing work by the Council. The case studies may be distributed via the Council, Data & Society, and the National Online Ethics Center (hosted by the National Academies of Engineering). Authors are also welcome to submit their case studies for publication. Potential topics include, but are not limited to, the following: Whether researchers should use data mining tools that correlate data across many public databases and risk revealing sensitive information about human subjects; What to do when publicly available anonymous data can be reidentified; How to use scientific data that is viewed differently in different cultural contexts; When journals and conferences might reject submissions for ethical lapses; Tensions between the degrees of freedom afforded to academic researchers vs. commercial researchers/practitioners etc. etc. An example case study "No Encore for Encore?" by Arvind Narayanan and Bendert Zevenbergen explores a web-based censorship measurement tool that asks hard questions about the boundaries of technical interventions for social good.
