We maintain that the field of sociology has insights to offer the questions that emerge from the proliferation of digital technologies and that a sociology without a thorough understanding of the digital will be a discipline that is irrelevant to the most pressing issues of the 21st century. In keeping with this year’s theme of “My Day Job: Politics and Pedagogy in Academia,” the *Digital Sociology Miniconference *seeks papers that address the many digital ways of knowing, particularly as those impinge on the work we do as scholars, both within and outside the academy. We seek abstracts, and wholly constituted panels, on a wide range of topics, including, but not limited to, the following themes: - *Public Scholarship, Digital Media and the Neoliberal University: *How is the participation of scholars on public, digital media platforms regarded within the neoliberal university? - *Digital Scholars, Legacy Institutions:* What does it mean to do digital sociology within institutions that are steeped in legacy modes of rewarding scholarship? How are scholars navigating the landscape of getting hired, tenured and promoted with a strong digital presence, or without one? - *Digital Sociological Methods: *How do traditional, analog sociological methods become digital? Are there new, “born digital” sociological methods? Is knowledge production different now? Will big data replace survey methodology? - *Social and Political Change through Social Media:* Given the increasing attention to social media as a tool used by both political and social movements as well as political campaigns in the U.S. and abroad, how does social media contribute to both grassroots organizing and the growth of astroturfed political and social movement structures? What do we know about online and offline activism? What are the risks and costs associated with online activism? How do online activists craft their identities? How do political and social organizations view the utility of online activism? How do specific media platforms are better for transmitting particular types of movement content such as frames, identities and programmatic claims? Beyond simply a recitation of ‘what I did in my class,’ we’re interested in theoretical and empirical explorations of how to think about digitally-informed pedagogies in the sociology classroom. We would love it if you do something back and fill out our survey, which ultimately aims to improve our (online) publication services. *Toward a geographical software studies*A series of sessions for the Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers <http://www.aag.org/annualmeeting> in San Francisco, March 29-April 2, 2016 Ryan Burns <http://burnsr77.github.io/> (Temple University) Nick Lally <http://www.nicklally.com/> (University of Wisconsin–Madison) A growing body of recent geographic scholarship has focused its attention on software and algorithms. Some of these studies analyze geographic technologies —GIS and the geoweb, for example— as such, while others investigate a myriad of digital technologies that have become ubiquitous within the spaces of everyday life. These software/code objects interact with and modulate the world in complex ways, enact processes that connect humans and nonhumans, and become entangled with social, cultural, political, and economic systems. Moreover, software created to visualize data is used to produce knowledge about urban environments and everyday life, but obscure the processes and contexts which underlie its development. Engaging these topics, geographers have developed concepts like the “automatic production of space” (Thrift and French 2002), “software-sorted geographies” (Graham 2005), and “code/space” (Kitchin and Dodge 2011) to describe how software and space are co-constituted in the contemporary world. Productive research is building on these topics to explore new ways geographies are produced (Rose, Degen, and Melhuish 2014), governed (Amoore 2011), materialized, represented (Woodward et al. 2015), and lived through software (Kinsley 2014). This session seeks to bring together a range of spatial thinkers who are producing new studies, theories, and methods for understanding and producing software. We welcome submissions that address all facets of software: the context of its production, its internal operational logics, the material work it does in the world, and its spatial distribution of social and political effects. Suggested themes could include: • Radical, feminist, or postcolonial political theories of software, software production, and/or hacking. What are the liberatory potentials/limits of coding or software and its critiques? • The political economy of software, code, attentional economies, and the audience as commodity. • Methodological contributions for the study of software (deconstruction, ethnography, reading code, reverse-engineering, archival research, hacking, writing software, visual studies, understanding processes, online research, etc) • Software and visual and affective epistemology. • The materiality of software and the work it does in the world (the production of space, embodiment, urbanization, social sorting, securitization, infrastructure, etc). Kevin, While I am sure this is not the earliest reference to this idea, it was certainly a core argument in Shoshanna Zuboff’s 1988 book “In the Age of the Smart Machine.” It’s been a long time since I looked at the book, but as I recall, she talks at length about the role of information byproducts generated computer-mediated work to better manage organizations, not always in positive ways from the perspective of workers. "Definitive" citation for the concept of digital trace data?

An argument for studies of online behaviour is that the systems collect records of what people do and that such digital trace data provide a rich source of evidence for all kinds of studies. I’m trying to trace back that idea but it seems so taken for granted that there’s often not a citation. So I wondered what people consider the definitive citation for that idea, and for the term "trace data” in this context more specifically. For example, there’s a 2008 handbook article: Welser, H. T., Smith, M., Fisher, D., and Gleave, E. 2008. "Distilling Digital Traces: Computational Social Science Approaches to Studying the Internet," in The Sage Handbook of Online Research Methods, N. Fielding, R.M. Lee and G. Blank (eds.). London, England: SAGE Publications, Ltd, pp. 116–141. But I suspect there are even earlier sources.
