CfPapers & Panels: "New Technologies in World Society: new frontiers for International Relations" | European International Studies Association
by Calderaro, Andrea 17 Nov '15

17 Nov '15

Apologies for CrossPosting ----- Cf Papers & Panels New Technologies in World Society: New frontiers for International Relations European International Studies Association<http://www.eisa-net.org/> Annual Conference Izmir, Turkey, 7-10 September 2016 Section Chairs: Andrea Calderaro - Cardiff University Madeline Carr - Aberystwyth University This section calls for papers and panels addressing the latest theoretically driven and empirically grounded research in the field of International Relations with the goal of challenging and extending our understanding of world politics in the Information Age. Abstract It is becoming increasingly apparent that challenges and opportunities related to Internet technology raise questions beyond the technical. In fact, cyber-security, Internet governance, jurisdictional questions and the distribution of online resources are largely political issues that can reinforce, dispute or contest existing concepts and ideas about global politics in world society. While other disciplines like law, sociology and computer science have engaged closely with the Information Age, International Relations scholars have yet to bring the full analytic power of their discipline to developing our understanding of what new digital technologies mean for concepts like war, peace, security, cooperation, human rights, equity and power. This section’s goal is to establish clear lines of dialogue between empirical research and innovative methodological approaches to the Internet and global politics, from both a scholarly relevant as well policy oriented perspective. In this context, we expect to collect proposals around the following themes: 1) Internet Governance 2) Cyber security and Cyber Warfare 3) Digital Technologies and Transnational Politics 4) Internet and Human Rights 5) Digital Diplomacy Please find more information about the conference here: http://www.paneuropeanconference.org/2016/ And the section: http://www.paneuropeanconference.org/2016/section.php?s=96 Proposal must be submitted by the 8th January via the EISA conference tool<http://www.paneuropeanconference.org/2016/spage.php?s=52> (http://www.paneuropeanconference.org/2016/spage.php?s=52<https://www.conftool.pro/paneuropean2016/>) Please do not hesitate to contact section chairs for any inquires or to informally discuss your proposal. analysis of how much of the web wayback machine is really archiving
by kalev leetaru 16 Nov '15

16 Nov '15

Apologies for cross-posting. Thought many of you would find of considerable interest some of the statistics from my new analysis, out this morning, of what's really in the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine and the oddities and skew of how its crawlers ingest the web: http://www.forbes.com/sites/kalevleetaru/2015/11/16/how-much-of-the-interne… One of the biggest themes that emerges is the need for greater transparency and understanding of the algorithms and collection processes of large web archives and dialog with the scholarly research community around what they collect and the impacts of those decisions on how and in what ways the archives can be used for research on the evolution of the web. ~Kalev http://kalevleetaru.com/ http://blog.gdeltproject.org/

The digital age is both changing journalism and offering great opportunities for understanding how news is produced and consumed. This is a key research area for the Philip Merrill College of Journalism Ph.D. program. A deep understanding of the past, present, and future of journalism is critical to democracy We foster this inquiry through faculty members at the College who research journalism, a network of courses and colleagues across the university who teach our students in related subjects (including courses at the UMD iSchool), as well as elite cohorts of Ph.D. students who pursue the in-depth study of journalism in its current and evolving forms. Are you interested in joining us? We are accepting applications for full fellowships (tuition and living expenses) to our program until February 1st. We offer a supportive, personalized teaching experience within the broader context of a range of opportunities across the University of Maryland. Small class sizes and a tradition of joint research with faculty members foster a collegial atmosphere and successful students. More than 80 percent of our Ph.D. graduates go on to the careers in university teaching, including a significant number in tenure-track jobs. We are seeking people who want academic and research careers in the field of journalism studies. The program is focused on a range of topics including studies of the audience in the digital age, journalistic practice and ethics, journalism history, and journalism in the global context. 2nd CFP and Update SEADE-CHIIR Workshop on Serendipity
by Lori McCay-Peet 16 Nov '15

16 Nov '15

Call for Papers (CFP): The Serendipity Factor: Evaluating the Affordances of Digital Environments SEADE (pronounced ‘seed’) Workshop at CHIIR 2016 (ACM SIGIR Conference on Human Information Interaction and Retrieval) http://sigir.org/chiir2016/ March 17, 2016, 9:00am-5:00pm, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States For two decades, research has sought to understand serendipity and how it may be facilitated in digital environments such as information visualization systems, search systems, and social media. The motivation for investigating serendipity comes from its association with positive outcomes that range from personal benefits to global rewards. To date, research has made significant headway in defining and mapping the process of serendipity and new tools are emerging to support it. But we lack robust methods of evaluating new or enhanced features, functions, and tools. The goal of the Workshop is to examine how we balance the tension between diversity and novelty in designing digital environments and subsequently how we evaluate the ‘serendipitousness’ of those environments. We invite participants from a range of disciplines (e.g., information science, HCI, digital humanities, cognitive science) and research perspectives to help us solve this wicked problem. **UPDATE** Keynote “Is There Anything Serendipity Research Can Learn from Creativity Research?” John Gero, University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study, George Mason University John Gero is the author or editor of over 50 books and more than 650 papers and book chapters <http://mason.gmu.edu/~jgero/publications/progress.html> in the fields of design science, design cognition, design computing, artificial intelligence, computer-aided design and cognitive science. He has been a Visiting Professor of Architecture, Civil Engineering, Cognitive Science, Computer Science, Design and Computation or Mechanical Engineering at MIT, UC-Berkeley, UCLA, Columbia and CMU in the USA, at Strathclyde and Loughborough in the UK, at INSA-Lyon and Provence in France and at EPFL in Switzerland. http://mason.gmu.edu/~jgero/ How to participate Submit a 2-page paper using the ACM SIG Proceedings Template<http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates> about your ongoing work, recent results, or study methods related to serendipity, either published, or work in progress. Possible themes for these papers may include, but are not limited to: Evaluating whether or how digital environments enables erendipity 1. Use of qualitative methods such as interviews and think-aloud to evaluate user perceptions 2. Modifications to quantitative evaluation methods such as controlled experiments and log file analyses to test designs 3. Identification of factors other than the environment (e.g., context, individual differences, strategies, emotions, attitudes) that influence serendipity that should be taken into consideration during evaluation Designing elements and functions in digital environments so that serendipity is facilitated 1. Application of theory and models in the design (or evaluation) of affordances related to serendipity 2. Design of serendipitous digital environments (e.g., information visualization systems, recommender systems, digital libraries, search engines) Authors of selected papers will be asked to A) give “lightning talks” on their work through a 5-minute presentation; or B) participate in a “show and tell event” to demonstrate their project or prototype. In addition, just prior to and during the workshop we will be conducting a whirlwind Delphi study to identify essential and novel measures for assessing “serendipitousness.” The results of the group effort will be discussed at the Workshop to highlight pertinent measures. At least one author of each accepted paper must attend the workshop and all participants much register for the workshop. **Submissions and inquiries can be sent to Lori McCay-Peet [mccay(a)dal.ca<mailto:mccay@dal.ca>]** Workshop website: http://sociodigital.net/2015/11/03/cfp-seade/ Important dates * Submission Deadline: December 1, 2015 * Notification: December 15, 2015 * Workshop date: March 17, 2016 Conference Organizers Lori McCay-Peet, Dalhousie University, Canada Elaine G.
