*NJIT Faculty Position: Big Data Analytics in Health Informatics/Smart Health for Fall 2016* http://is.njit.edu/about/jobs The Department of Information Systems at New Jersey Institute of Technology seeks outstanding candidates for a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant or Associate Professorship in the area of big data analytics. Candidates must have or be near the completion of a PhD in information systems, informatics, computing, or a related field. Preferences will be given to those who specialize in health informatics and/or smart health, but outstanding candidates in other big data application areas will also be considered. Desirable candidates are those with a proven track record in using: pattern recognition, data/text mining, knowledge representation, decision support, and machine learning for integration, analysis, visualization, and stream processing of extra-large scale data from disparate sources and/or in heterogeneous formats, to solving healthcare problems. Areas of particular interest include intelligent information systems for clinical/translational researchers and secondary use of EHR data for research, clinical care, operations, accountable care, precision diagnostics and medicine, the learning healthcare system, as well as informatics methods for healthcare knowledge discovery to be used at any point of care. Applicants should have an excellent academic record, exceptional potential for world-class research and funding, and be qualified to teach introductory courses in Information Systems and advanced courses in their area of expertise. Outstanding candidates with significant funding and publication will be considered at the associate professorship level. The IS Department, housed under College of Computing Sciences, has 7 degree programs (Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD) and specializes in both human-centered computing and data intensive research. Thanks much, Best, Dave ----- Letter: October 26, 2015 An open letter to the United States Senate: We are professors who research and/or teach about cyberlaw and cybersecurity, and write to express our concerns about S. 754, the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act (the “Act”). In April, more than 60 technologists and computer and network security professionals wrote to express their concerns with the Act; we attach a copy of that letter below and echo the concerns raised in that letter. While recent amendments to CISA have attempted to address the significant privacy and surveillance concerns raised by the aforementioned technologists and others, the fundamental problem inherent in CISA remains. In sum, it will do little, if anything, to address the very real problem of flawed cybersecurity while creating conditions ripe for abuse. Among other infirmities, it would: • Allow “voluntary” sharing of heretofore private information with the government, allowing secret and ad hoc privacy intrusions in place of meaningful consideration of the privacy concerns of all Americans. The Freedom of Information Act would be neutralized, while a cornucopia of federal agencies could have access to the public’s heretofore private-held information with little fear that such sharing would ever be known to those whose information was shared. • Allow companies to attack cybersecurity threats, without clear limitations on their power or scope. • Allow companies to do any and all of the above with little fear of facing legal consequences for poor judgment (or worse). Most significantly, it would do all of the above while doing little to address actual cybersecurity concerns. Rather than encouraging companies to increase their own cybersecurity standards, CISA ignores that goal and offloads responsibility to a generalized public-private secret information sharing network. CISA creates new law in the wrong places. For example, as the attached letter indicates, security threat information sharing is already quite robust. Instead, what are most needed are more robust and meaningful private efforts to prevent intrusions into networks and leaks out of them, and CISA does nothing to move us in that direction. In sum, this is a classic “let’s do something” law. While we laud Congress for taking notice of the significant cybersecurity threats facing US corporations, we fear that CISA will weaken privacy and encourage governmental surveillance, with little upside for the public. Hi AoIRistas, I'm curious if anyone knows of a reliable way to search for job posts that have appeared on Monster.com. I'm trying to establish staffing trends within a part of the tech sector, and would like to search beyond recent posts or jobs that are currently open. So far, I've not figured out how to convince the interface to do this: search seems only to go back 30 days, and it gets grumpy if I play with the search string in the URL. Any ideas? Hi AoIR people, Sitting at IR16 as we speak, saddened that this wonderful conference will soon come to a close :( I have spoken to a number of scholars about a project myself and a colleague are launching next year, and was told it would be good to cast it out to the wider networks: Against a backdrop of very unequal educational system in South Africa, we have undertaken a (wildly amibitious) project called 67games. Based on the 67-minutes initiative for Mandela Day, we have vowed to host collaborative international game jams to produce 67 educational games which will be displayed on arcade machines produced from recyclables and e-waste in under-resourced communities. CALL FOR PAPERS (in French only) APPEL DE TEXTES Les pratiques transformatrices de l’espace socionumérique : appropriation, résistance et expérimentation L’idée préconçue selon laquelle les humains ne font que se déplacer dans l’espace en le laissant inchangé doit être remise en question. En effet, il semble plus juste de concevoir l’espace comme une construction, continuellement en train de se faire et de se transformer. En prenant en considération que la spatialité peut être pensée autrement que dans sa seule dimension physique, nous pouvons nous demander quelle place prennent les pratiques humaines dans la transformation de l’espace socionumérique. Par quels processus cet espace se transforme-t-il? Comment l’espace social est-il transformé par l’avènement et la prégnance du numérique? D’emblée, il faut se défaire de l’illusion selon laquelle le cyberespace serait un lieu libérateur permettant aux internautes de circuler librement et d’outrepasser simplement les contraintes physiques du monde hors ligne, cette croyance étant ébranlée notamment par la privatisation, la surveillance et la régulation grandissantes de l’espace socionumérique. Comment alors ces facteurs influencent-ils les possibilités de transformation de cet espace? En outre, nombre de pratiques humaines sur Internet sont en adéquation avec un mode de consommation hédoniste, axé sur l’épanchement des besoins personnels dans des lieux de divertissement ou sur l’expression de son individualité propre. Or, s’il est possible de mettre l’accent sur des manières alternatives d’utiliser les réseaux socionumériques selon des buts plus communautaires, ces « autres » pratiques demeurent en marge des formes générales, mais se définissent pourtant par rapport à elles. L’approche que nous désirons adopter pour ce nouveau numéro de la collection Cahiers du Gerse (Presses de l’Université du Québec) consiste à se situer au point de rencontre entre les pratiques sociales généralisées et les pratiques transformatrices de l’espace socionumérique qui le travaillent de l’intérieur et lui permettent de devenir autre. À cet égard, il semble possible de distinguer, dans ces pratiques transformatrices, trois processus complémentaires: l’appropriation, la résistance et l’expérimentation. Sous réserve d’articles permettant de problématiser et de mieux définir ces processus, nous serions portés à dire que l’appropriation permet à l’individu d’être affecté et surtout de faire siennes des potentialités jusqu’alors insoupçonnées au sein des divers dispositifs socionumériques. Il s’agirait d’un mouvement vers soi pour construire un espace maximisant la puissance d’agir de celui qui l’effectue. La résistance, quant à elle, opposerait dialectiquement une réponse au modèle dominant afin de le transformer plus ou moins radicalement. L’expérimentation serait, pour sa part, une plongée dans les devenirs non actualisés, un mouvement créateur provoquant la transformation aussi bien de l’espace social qu’individuel. Ce processus se distinguerait des deux autres notamment en ceci que ses multiples manières de se produire sont indécidables (impossibles à catégoriser) et ses résultats imprévisibles (on ne peut pas savoir ce qui s’actualisera). Pouvons-nous, au regard de ce cadrage, analyser ces différentes pratiques transformatrices du Web social en fonction de leurs effets « spatiaux »? Pouvons-nous, à travers des cas d’appropriation, de résistance et d’expérimentation, repenser le concept d’espace à l’ère du numérique? En somme, voulant axer plutôt sur la transformation que sur la fixation de l’espace socionumérique, ce prochain numéro tient à renouveler les manières de penser l’espace socionumérique, entre autres en questionnant l’engagement citoyen (artistique ou politique) et en conceptualisant le rôle des individus en tant qu’agents de transformation, ou encore en analysant des situations qui dévoilent de nouveaux modes de résistance, d’appropriation ou d’expérimentation, ou enfin en proposant une réflexion théorique sur la conception processuelle de l’espace socionumérique. Voici une liste non exhaustive de sujets qui pourraient être abordés : • La problématisation du concept d’espace public à l’ère du numérique, dans une perspective processuelle. • Les cadres d’analyse permettant de mieux comprendre les pratiques transformatrices de la spatialité socionumérique. • Le rôle des médias socionumériques dans la transformation ou l’occupation d’espaces publics (révolution arabe, mouvement Occupy, printemps érable, flash-mobs, etc.). • L’occupation ou la destruction d’espaces socionumériques à des fins de résistance (attaques par déni de service, piratage informatif, etc.). • Le rôle des médias socionumériques dans le contournement d’obstacles physiques (répression policière, poste de contrôle, dispersion des communautés diasporiques, etc.). • La création d’un espace en ligne où les minorités marginalisées (mouvement LGBT, communauté culturelle, etc.) peuvent faire entendre leur voix. • Les luttes de pouvoir qui s’opèrent dans le cyberespace pour contrôler son aménagement et son accès. Richard Barbrook and Andy Cameron's The Californian Ideology, originally published in 1995 by Mute magazine and the nettime mailinglist, is the iconic text of the first wave of Net criticism. The internet might have fundamentally changed in the last two decades, but their demolition of the neoliberal orthodoxies of Silicon Valley remains shocking and provocative. They question the cult of the dot-com entrepreneur, challenging the theory of technological determinism and refuting the myths of American history. Denounced as the work of 'looney lefties' by Silicon Valley's boosters when it first appeared, The Californian Ideology has since been vindicated by the corporate take-over of the Net and the exposure of the NSA's mass surveillance programmes. Published in 1999 at the peak of the dot-com bubble, Richard Barbrook's Cyber-Communism offers an alternative vision of the shape of things to come, inspired by Marshall McLuhan's paradoxical 'thought probes'. With the Californian Ideology growing stronger, the Net was celebrated as the mechanical perfection of neoliberal economics.
