Participations, The Journal for Audience and Reception Studies has published its latest issue online at http://www.participations.org The latest issue offers a particularly wide variety of articles, including three themed sections. The first theme section focuses on theatre audiences, and is guest edited by Matthew Reason and Kirsty Sedgman. The second theme section, guest-edited by Marie Gillespie and Ben O'Loughlin presents several interesting discussions of the power of social media, specifically as it relates to the Tweeting of the 2012 Olympics. The final themed section (guest editor: Lesley-Ann Dickson) presents a selection of papers from the 2014 Edinburgh International Film Festival. Dear AIRers, Please consider submitting a workshop paper, and spreading the word about the following workshop at ECSCW: *Examining the Essence of the Crowds: Motivations, Roles and Identities* *A workshop at **ECSCW 2015* <http://www.ecscw2015.no/>*, September 19, in Oslo, Norway.* In this one-day workshop we will examine the crowd’s motivation factors, roles and identities both in voluntary and paid crowdsourcing. We encourage diverse and creative methods and theoretical frameworks in this one-day workshop. We invite both empirical and theoretical work, position papers and works in progress. We will apply interactive methods in exploring the topics like small group discussions and flash presentations. The workshop will result into a research agenda, in which we, as a part of the ECSCW community, present a roadmap for addressing these questions. This deliverable which will be posted online and shared widely. The workshop builds on three earlier successful workshops: *Back to the Future of Organizational Work: Crowdsourcing Digital Work Marketplaces* and *Structures for Knowledge Co-creation between Organizations and the Public *hosted at ACM CSCW 2014, and *The Morphing Organization — Rethinking Groupwork Systems in the Era of Crowdwork* hosted at ACM GROUP 2014. *Submissions* In this ECSCW workshop we seek to address questions surrounding motivation factors, roles and identities of participants in both voluntary and paid crowdsourcing. We invite work on coordination and collaboration mechanisms that help development and organization of crowdsourcing systems. These mechanisms could include use of external information sources, freeware and software materials, communication tools beyond those provided by the platform, etc. We invite both empirical and theoretical work, position papers and works in progress. We encourage diverse and creative methods and theoretical frameworks in examining these aspects. The questions and topics the workshop will explore include the following ones, but are not limited to: - Motivation factors of the crowd in paid and voluntary crowdsourcing, and in short-term and long-term crowdsourcing initiatives - Collaboration and coordination mechanisms in crowdwork - The roles participants take in crowdsourcing projects in different contexts, and the processes in which they take their roles - The boundaries between newcomers and experts, highly active participants and more passive ones, moderators and mentors, the stages in which the participants grow into these roles and switch back and forth. - The crowd’s demographic profile in a variety contexts - The artefacts that the crowd uses for conducting their tasks and monitoring their work individually and as a community The maximum length of a paper is 2,000 words. Here, researches can potentially use explicit social communication information (such as online, offline chat) to boost the personalized search experience for each user, or in a community-wise sense, support the common goal of users working on the same search tasks, such as people planning a group trip. Apologies for cross-posting Workshop “Understanding the Responsibilities of Online Service Providers in Information Societies” 2 October 2015 - Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, UK The exponential development of Internet services and resources has brought enormous benefits and opportunities to ever more people. However, it has also greatly outpaced our understanding of their ethical implications, raising unprecedented social challenges, ranging from the protection of individual rights and the regulation of surveillance measures to access to data and information. In this complex scenario, Online Service Providers (OSPs) - such as for example AOL, Apple, Dropbox, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Twitter, and Yahoo- are major actors, which significantly influence the informational environment and users’ interactions within it. Such a role is unprecedented and problematic for OSPs as well as for other stakeholders, like governments and citizens’ groups, as proven by recent examples like the PRISM scandal and the debate on the “right to be forgotten”. The need to understand the responsibilities that OPSs bear in contemporary information societies is thus fast escalating and addressing it requires a coordinated interdisciplinary theorising able to consider legal, social, and ethical standpoints. The workshop will be a major occasion to gather leading experts from different fields in order to share information and views. Contributions to the workshop will address issues concerning: · The role of OSPs in contemporary information societies, whether and to what extent their role differs from the one of publishers, mass-media, and gate-keepers; · The moral responsibilities of OSPs in contemporary societies; · Ethical frameworks for the understanding of OSPs responsibilities, e.g. corporate social responsibilities or human rights; · The gap in OSPs’ policies and possible strategies to overcome it; · The gap in existing legal frameworks regulating OSPs. Dates, instructions, and timeline The workshop will be a one-day event and will be held at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, on October 2, 2015. 500-word abstracts (in MS Word or PDF format) can be submitted to Dr Mariarosaria Taddeo by August 1, 2015. All submitted abstracts will be reviewed by the workshop organizers, Professor Luciano Floridi and Dr Mariarosaria Taddeo, and authors will be notified of the outcome by August the 17, 2015. Authors of the accepted abstracts will be invited to participate in the workshop and to submit a full paper by November the 2, 2015, for peer-review and publication in a dedicated edited volume. In essence, it looks at macro-level patterns in how the global news media as a whole groups countries together in its coverage. In other words, for all news media from anywhere in the world monitored by GDELT, every time a location in South Africa is mentioned in a given week, what are all of the other countries mentioned in that coverage in rank order?
