Order a copy of the print book for free, read it online, or download the pdf on: http://networkcultures.org/wpmu/portal/publication/society-of-the-query-rea… Read the Introduction to the book here: http://networkcultures.org/wpmu/query/2014/04/23/reflect-and-act-introducti… About the book: Looking up something online is one of the most common applications of the web. Whether with a laptop or smartphone, we search the web from wherever we are, at any given moment. ‘Googling’ has become so entwined in our daily routines that we rarely question it. However, search engines such as Google or Bing determine what part of the web we get to see, shaping our knowledge and perceptions of the world. But there is a world beyond Google – geographically, culturally, and technologically. The Society of the Query network was founded in 2009 to delve into the larger societal and cultural consequences that are triggered by search technology. In this Reader, which is published after two conferences held in Amsterdam in 2009 and 2013, twenty authors – new media scholars, historians, computer scientists, and artists – try to answer a number of pressing questions about online search. What are the foundations of web search? What ideologies and assumptions are inscribed in search engine algorithms? What solution can be formulated to deal with Google’s monopoly in the future? Are alternatives to Google even thinkable? What influence does online search have on education practices? How do artists use the abundance of data that search engines provide in their creative work? By bringing researchers together from a variety of relevant disciplines, we aim at opening up new perspectives on the Society of the Query. www.networkcultures.org/query Contributors: Aharon Amir, Vito Campanelli, Dave Crusoe, Angela Daly, Vicențiu Dîngă, Martin Feuz, Ulrich Gehmann, Olivier Glassey, Richard Graham, Mél Hogan, Ippolita, Kylie Jarrett, Min Jiang, Anna Jobin, Phil Jones, Simon Knight, Dirk Lewandowski, M.E. RFP: Case Studies for Civic Media Reader (MIT Press)
by Eric Gordon 23 Apr '14

23 Apr '14

There is less than one week to go for contributions to the Civic Media Reader. We’re hoping to get more case study submissions for the both the print and online book. Please send your contributions by Friday, April 25. CIVIC MEDIA READER CALL FOR CASE STUDY SUBMISSIONS There is a groundswell of activity in the fields of civic engagement and technologies coming from a wide range of academic and practical disciplines. But there is no volume that attempts to pull this work together under a single umbrella. The Civic Media Reader (MIT Press, 2015), edited by Eric Gordon and Paul Milhailidis, will provide a thorough exploration of the relationship between citizens, technologies and engagement in a global context and serve as a shared framework for this emerging discipline. The book is divided into five sections--Big Picture, Modes of Engagement, Institutions and Organizations, Activism and Participation, and Methods and Collaborations--each with a host of sections that investigate how civic technologies are affecting certain policy domains, civic practices, or facilitating more efficient or meaningful participation in contemporary society. To support and enrich these theoretical chapters, we are looking for case studies in the various fields and disciplines in which civic technologies and corresponding practices have developed since the turn of the 21st Century. A case study presents a detailed look at a particular organization, use of technology, or methodology which highlights a unique aspect of contemporary civics. Our submissions page is www.cmr-acq.tumblr.com/submitcase<http://www.cmr-acq.tumblr.com/submitcase>. Cases will take two forms: written, descriptive pieces about 1000 words in length or multimedia cases (e.g. annotated video, audio clip, image timeline, slideshow, etc.). Successful cases will offer an overview of the organization, method, intervention or tool, and will connect it to t1he larger themes of the chapter intended to include it. Examples of cases might include Kony2012, the Harry Potter Alliance, the Civic Cloud Collaborative, Nation Builder, E-Democracy, EngagethePower.org<http://engagethepower.org/>, or Change.org<http://change.org/>. About 30 1000-word cases will be published in the print book and multimedia cases will be made available on a companion website to be launched around the time of the book?s publication. The book's online companion will be authored on Scalar (http://scalar.usc.edu/scalar/) Scalar is a free, open source authoring and publishing platform that is designed to make it easy for authors to create born-digital scholarship. These multimedia submissions will facilitate discussion about the chapters online and offer a more interactive digital perspective on their themes and ideas. If you intend to submit a multimedia submission, please indicate it on the form. If there is a particular chapter your case is intended to accompany, please specify in your description. We are asking for 100-word proposals by April 25, 2014. Authors will be notified in early May. Final cases will be due by June 30. For further information about the project, please visit www.cmr-acq.tumblr.com/thebook<http://www.cmr-acq.tumblr.com/thebook> or email marissa_koors(a)emerson.edu<mailto:marissa_koors@emerson.edu>.

Call for proposals: VL Innovators Challenge (#VLInnovators)
by Sheryl Grant 21 Apr '14

21 Apr '14

Voto Latino, in Partnership with The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and Google, Announces the $500,000 VL Innovators Challenge The tech competition will provide $10,000-$100,000 grants to 10-15 Millennial-led projects that improve the lives of and expand opportunities for Latinos in the U.S. Voto Latino <http://www.votolatino.org/>, a nonprofit that empowers Latino Millennials to create positive change in their communities, in partnership with the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation<http://www.macfound.org/> and Google, and administered by HASTAC <http://www.hastac.org/>, launched the VL Innovators Challenge <http://www.vlinnovators.com/>, a tech competition for Millennials between the ages of 18 and 34. The VL Innovators Challenge seeks to cultivate a pool of Latino tech talent and find innovative solutions to problems in the Latino community. The Challenge will award $500,000 in grants to the 10-15 best projects, and it is part of a year-long celebration commemorating Voto Latino’s 10-year anniversary. “The VL Innovators Challenge is an investment in a rising generation of Latino Millennials who are more than just consumers of technology; they are creators and they are makers,” said María Teresa Kumar, President and CEO, Voto Latino. “Study after study shows that Latinos are highly entrepreneurial, yet our presence is missing in the corridors of Silicon Valley. Through the VL Innovators Challenge, we hope to not only provide funding for great ideas but also the access to make these ideas succeed.” The VL Innovators Challenge is part of the Connected Learning<http://connectedlearning.tv/> movement, an educational approach that makes learning relevant to everyone, to real life and real work, and to the realities of the digital age. “For nearly a decade, MacArthur has invested in innovations to reimagine a future in which all young people are able to engage in learning that is relevant to their lives and prepares them for success in school, the workplace, and their community,” said Connie Yowell, Director of Education at the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. “Our support for the VL Innovators Challenge is intended to build upon the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of Latino Millennials to develop tools and strategies to solve some of our country’s most pressing challenges.” Millennials of all backgrounds are encouraged to submit their best ideas and enter the competition. Those who are awarded a grant will be provided with access to the expertise of Silicon Valley veterans like Google to help see their ideas to fruition. “The VL Innovators Challenge presents an opportunity to find tech solutions to problems in the Latino community and to address the educational and economic disparities that contribute to the low numbers of Latinos in tech," said Eliana Murillo, Head of Multicultural Marketing, Google. Google will host winners at its Mountain View Headquarters for a week of learning. Today, Latinos make up a mere 7 percent of U.S. tech workers and studies suggest the gap to careers in Silicon Valley begins at an early age. Black and Latino students are four times less likely to take AP Math and Science exams than their White and Asian counterparts, and six times less likely to take the AP Computer Science exam. In 2013, Blacks and Latinos made up only 9 percent of computer science and engineering college graduates. “Our country suffers from a severe wealth gap, and Latinos are getting left behind. Not enough Latino Millennials go after the high-paying tech jobs, where the average salary is $77,000 a year -- $40,000 more than what the average Latino makes today,” said Wilmer Valderrama, actor and Co-Chair of Voto Latino’s Artist Coalition. “The VL Innovators Challenge seeks to address this growing disparity head on.” Each proposed project submitted for the tech competition must address a need or challenge in the Latino community and must include a new tech tool to solve that challenge. Applications may incorporate any technology — mobile apps, websites, computer apps and programs, social networking platforms, low-cost handheld devices, etc. — and must address any community issue, great or small. Applications for the VL Innovators Challenge must be submitted by September 10, 2014 at <http://www.vlinnovators.com/> www.VLInnovators.com <http://www.vlinnovators.com/>. Proposed projects will be made available to the public through the competition’s website and via social media using #VLInnovators. The VL Innovators Challenge winners will be selected by a combination of audience participation, a panel of esteemed judges—comprised of 50 community, elected, and business leaders—and Voto Latino staff. The winners will be announced at Voto Latino’s 10-year anniversary gala in November.
