videos and blog reports from MoneyLab #1
by Geert Lovink 17 Apr '14

17 Apr '14

Dear fellow internet researchers. on March 21-22 2014 the first MoneyLab event was held, here in Amsterdam, organized by the Institute of Network Cultures. It took place inside the ruins of the former Smart Project Space facilities near Leidseplein (now called Lab111). The conference covered, besides the general topic of money theory, monetization and the impact of the 2008 global financial crisis issues such as bitcoin and other crypto-currencies, crowdfunding research and mobile money. There was also a lot of emphasis on artistic responses to money politics. If you want to you more please visit the MoneyLab blog on the INC website and subscribe to the mailinglist (http://listcultures.org/mailman/listinfo/moneylab_listcultures.org) There you can also find out more information about possible next workshops and events such as the planned second MoneyLab conference in London (early 2015). Videos, photos and blog reports of all contributions can be found here: http://www.networkcultures.org/wpmu/moneylab/program-3/report/. Yours, Geert

Call for chapters: Mobile Communication and the Asian family
by Sun Sun LIM 17 Apr '14

17 Apr '14

Call for chapters Mobile Communication and the Asian family - Transforming technologies, changing households Edited by Sun Sun Lim, National University of Singapore To be published by Springer in January 2015 This book explores how mobile communication technologies are penetrating Asia at a rapid rate, and being avidly domesticated by households in Asia. It investigates how such technologies are being incorporated into Asian families' daily routines for work, education, entertainment and household coordination, while being appropriated for communication and the nurturance of family bonds. Even as mobile communication technology is evolving relentlessly, families in Asia are also going through a period of transformation as the region experiences unprecedented economic growth, urbanisation and demographic shifts. Asia is therefore at the crossroads of technological transformation and social change and this book seeks to capture the mutual impact of these two contemporaneous trends through the lens of the family. I welcome research on different types of families (e.g. nuclear, blended, single-parent, multigenerational, grandparent-led etc.), from a spectrum of socio-economic profiles, that utilise a range of qualitative and quantitative methodological approaches, and which are informed by a diversity of theoretical perspectives. *Research by emerging Asia-focused and/or Asia-based scholars whose work has not previously been published in English is especially welcome.* Chapter proposals are sought for topics including but not limited to the following: * Influence of socio-cultural norms on families' appropriation of mobile communication technologies * Time management and micro-coordination * Practices and negotiations pertaining to acquisition, ownership and usage of mobile communication devices and services * Blurring boundaries between work and family * Issues of (dis)empowerment, privacy and surveillance * Nature and quality of family interaction * Inter-generational differences in perceptions and usage of mobile communication * Parental mediation of mobile device usage Please submit chapter proposals of up to 800 words, and brief author biographies of up to 300 words as an e-mail attachment by 15 May 2014. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by 5 June 2014 and invited to submit a full paper to sunlim(a)nus.edu.sg<mailto:sunlim@nus.edu.sg> . Manuscripts should be no more than 8,000 words, including notes and references, conform to APA style, and submitted by 30 September, 2014. All papers will be subject to anonymous peer review following submission. Media & Politics Group Annual Conference. Theme: Media, Persuasion and Human Rights
by Andy 17 Apr '14

17 Apr '14

Colleagues, I'm delighted to announce that the Political Studies Association Media & Politics Group Annual Conference will be held this November at Bangor University in N.Wales, hosted by Bangor University's network for Media & Persuasive Communication. We welcome papers on any aspect of Media and Politics, or on this year’s conference theme of Media, Persuasion and Human Rights. While human rights may appear inalienable in international law and covenants, in fact they are sites of contestation, conflict and redefinition, variably implemented across the globe. Reflecting our theme, our key note speakers include Prof. Jon Silverman (University of Bedfordshire) who is currently working on the influence of the media's reporting of war crimes trials in West Africa on civil society. *Conference Date: *Mon. 10th - Tues. 11th Nov. 2014 *Website: * http://www.bangor.ac.uk/creative_industries/media-persuasion/index.php.en *Email: *mediapoliticsconference(a)bangor.ac.uk We seek papers on any of the following themes. 1. *Media and Politics* - any aspect. 2. *Media, Persuasion* *and Human Rights*, including: a) *Mediating Norms.* Jeremy Bentham once called human rights ‘nonsense upon stilts’. What is the philosophical status of human rights and how are deontic norms complicated, challenged and threatened by current geo-political events and their mediation? Are liberal social aspirations being redefined and eroded? Did they ever exist? What betterment do we have to aim for today? b) *Communicating Trade-offs.* When governments balance rights against each other (eg trading-off the right to privacy or freedom from torture in exchange for national security), how do the media respond? How does the complexity of decision-making and trade-offs get communicated? What are decision-makers’ insights on balancing and communicating rights? c) *Contestation and Articulation*. What human rights are privileged by, and contested through, the media? How have these changed over time? How do articulatory struggles play out across the media, and via what persuasive ‘actants’, including NGOs, investigative journalists, the public, lawyers, companies, corporations, governments, and international governance bodies? d) *Media Forms*. How does the struggle over articulation vary across different media forms and genres? How do minority media and the rise of mass self-broadcasting enable perverted viewing and production (eg torture porn, tour of duty war mementos), and with what implications for the normalization of abnormal situations (too taboo for mass view), and for the social enactment of human rights? e) *New Media, New Rights?* What novel opportunities and challenges do new media technologies present for human rights that intrinsically rely on the media, such as the right to privacy and freedom of speech? f) *Mobilisation*. In what ways do media inform and mobilise the public regarding their human rights? This may range from the practices of bearing witness (eg sousveillant communication); to the generation of empathy, intimacy, and a new solidarity through media forms that invoke engagement, identification and pleasure (eg Twitter, film, reality TV, comedy, music)? g) *Gender*. Is there such as thing as 'gendered' human rights? How does gender impact and influence mediated construction of human rights around the globe? How has the media engaged in the representation of gendered and sexualised human rights abuses (for example mass rape, comfort women, sex trafficking and enforced prostitution)? h) *Cultural Imperialism?* What are non-western insights on human rights liberal discourse, and how are these dealt with in various national and trans-national institutions ranging from satellite TV to the International Criminal Court? We encourage diverse responses to the theme, but are especially interested in interdisciplinary responses, not least from policy-makers, activists, philosophers, information-management specialists, computer scientists, journalists, security analysts, and those with expertise in law or politics. *Abstract submission* All proposals should include the following: title and name, institutional affiliation and address, and email address; together with, a paper title, an abstract of not more than 300 words, an indication of which theme(s) you are addressing, and up to five key words about your paper. Please also indicate whether or not you are a postgraduate student. Please indicate which section you wish your proposal to be considered under: 1. 10-15 minute panel presentation; 2. Practice-based work (15 mins - comprising showing of practice-based piece (or an extract) plus any accompanying discussion/context). Abstracts should be sent *by 1**st** July* to mediapoliticsconference(a)bangor.ac.uk . All abstracts will undergo peer review and decisions on papers will be given within 3 weeks of the submission deadline. *Postgraduates & James Thomas Memorial Prize* Postgraduate students are invited to submit a full paper that will be entered into the James Thomas Memorial Prize. This annual award is presented to the most outstanding paper by a postgraduate student at the Media and Politics Group Annual Conference. While abstracts must be submitted by 1st July, full papers must be submitted by 1 October 2014, to allow time for them to be reviewed by the MPG conveners. Re: [Air-L] Seeking Estonian translation services for dissertationresearch, specifically survey translation
by Scott MacLeod 15 Apr '14

15 Apr '14

Hi Cory and Air-L friends, Thanks for your inquiry, Cory. While I don't know of any Estonian translation services per se, I am BCC-ing two Estonian friends who live in the US in this email who can respond to you directly if they are available to help you translate the 70-ish question survey you mention concerning e-commerce transactions. Here is the Estonia wiki subject page at WUaS which is the beginning of a significantly large MIT OCW-centric Estonia World University and School - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Estonia - eventually in the Estonian language - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Estonian_language - (and which like most Nation States' wiki pages - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nation_States - are the beginnings of MIT OCW World University and Schools in each country, and in large languages in them). Estonians who are interested in developing an online CC MIT OCW-centric university would do so beginning here at WUaS - Eesti language (Estonian): http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Eesti (think Wikipedia). Each language's university would potentially be translated from/to all 7, 105 languages, and not just from / to Estonian-English. You'll find too some translation sections on each WUaS page, which I hope will eventually become a resource and community for open source and helpful translation in many languages. All the best, Scott - Scott MacLeod - Founder & President - http://scottmacleod.com/interlingual/worlduniversityandschool.html - worlduniversityandschool(a)gmail.com - World University and School - like Wikipedia with MIT OpenCourseWare (not endorsed by MIT OCW) - incorporated as a nonprofit effective April 2010. CFP - HICSS-48: Global Virtual Teams (GVT) Minitrack
by Derrick L. Cogburn 15 Apr '14

15 Apr '14

Dear AoIR Colleagues, For those of you studying various aspects of communication, collaboration and technology in globally distributed teams, groups, and networks, we invite you to submit a paper to the minitrack on Global Virtual Teams (GVT) for the 48th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS). HICSS-48 will be held from 5-8 January 2015 at the Grand Hyatt on Kauai. Our full Call for Papers and detailed information about the conference can be found here http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_48/apahome48.htm and information for potential authors can be found here http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_48/48CFP-final.pdf. The firm due date for submission of full papers is: 15 June 2014. All peer reviews will be completed by 1 August, with accept/reject decisions emailed shortly thereafter. If you are interested in serving as a reviewer, please contact us as well. About the Global Virtual Teams Minitrack HICSS uses a minitrack structure, where smaller groups of dedicated conference participants engage intensively with a limited number of peer reviewed full papers. The minitrack on Global Virtual Teams focuses on a wide range of topics related to distributed communication, collaboration and technology. Today many business processes, government and scientific projects, and civil society advocacy activities are executed by geographically dispersed virtual teams. Team members often do not have the same first language, come from different national cultures, work in different time zones and may be employed in different organizations. These differences, among others, present unique opportunities and challenges for management and leadership. This minitrack invites papers that offer insights into the successful operation of global virtual teams. Session topics include but are not limited to: • Temporal separation and its effects on collaboration • Cultural differences in perception of time • Conflict resolution across cultures • Accessibility in global virtual teams • Project management styles and differences across cultures • Differences in language understanding and its effects on collaboration • Power distance and its effects on collaboration • Uncertainty (risk) avoidance and its effects on collaboration • Collaboration and communication tools • Differences between academic and non-academic virtual teams • Global virtual team case studies Both academics and practitioners are encouraged to submit papers. Also, we will again offer our HICSS workshop on Cross-Cultural Communication in Accessible Global Virtual Teams. And, for HICSS-48 we are offering a half-day workshop on big data analytics and text mining in global virtual teams research. If you have any questions about the CFP, GVT minitrack or workshops, or HICSS in general, please do not hesitate to contact either of us. We look forward to your submissions and the continued success of the HICSS GVT minitrack.
