Please circulate and distribute widely: *1984: FREEDOM AND CENSORSHIP IN THE MEDIA – WHERE ARE WE NOW?* *University of Sunderland – London Campus (23rd-24th April 2014)* In response to an overwhelming international interest from academics, we have decided to relocate the conference to the University of Sunderland’s *London* Campus. The conference will now take place on the *23rd and 24th of April 2014*. In light the change in venue and dates, we are reopening the call for papers. The new deadline for the submission of abstracts is January 17th 2014. The conference aims to examine censorship both nationally and internationally and in all forms of media. Selected papers will be published with a leading UK publisher in a forthcoming edited collection based on the event. *Confirmed keynote speakers* Professor Martin Barker, University of East Anglia Jerry Barnett, SexAndCensorship.org Professor Julian Petley, Brunel University Professor Clarissa Smith, University of Sunderland In 2013 has raised concerns about new censorship measures. Jerry Barnett has referred to it as ‘Internet Censorship 1.0’, It seems that 2014 is not so far away from 1984 in terms of the social and political struggles for the control of the media landscape. Censorship is still the currency of the contemporary political discourse. Worries over effects of media content and technologies are never far from the headlines. When anxieties centre on protecting children and the fortification of the social fabric, regulation often seems like the first resort. The year 2014 will see the thirtieth anniversary of the 1984 Video Recordings Act (VRA): this event offers the opportunity to reflect on how and why concerns about individual media technologies and particular media genres become so important that campaigners and politicians can claim that ‘the very soul of the nation’ is at stake. Using the VRA as a starting point, this conference aims to critically examine the key issues in politics and campaigning which shape calls for censorship. If new technologies always spark old anxieties around ‘effects’ and propensities to cause ‘harm’, what might we learn from extant legislation and their implementation? As we settle into the internet age and media on demand, policing national media borders seems ever more futile, yet the clamour for legislation to protect children and society shows no signs of abating. We invite submissions that explore issues relating to censorship which may be specific to the history, implementation and legacies of the Video Recordings Act but we also welcome papers which examine media regulation/censorship in contemporaneous issues and their historical antecedents. Their broader cultural contexts, which are national and international in focus and which draw connections between Suggested topics: Censorship Evolving practices and technologies of media classification and/or censorship ‘Problematic’ media cultures Regulation of representations of sex, gender and sexualities Digital and online censorship Oppositional voices Protecting and questioning national borders Campaigns and campaigners Activism/activists and the political arena International narratives of censorship British regulation in a global context National and international regulation/censorship Documentary and avant-garde Controversies around computer games History of contemporary film censorship/classification Audiences and the social experiences of censorship Censorship and the creation of communities of dissent Regulations and government policy Proposals for individual papers or pre-constituted panels are welcomed. The submission deadline is 17th January 2014 and notifications of acceptance will be made by the 31st January 2014. Proposals should include title, abstract (350 words), 3-5 key bibliographical references, along with the name of the presenter, institutional affiliation and biographical information (100 words), and email. Panel organizers are asked to submit panel proposals including a panel title, a short description of the panel and information on all the papers following the guidelines listed above. Panels may consist of three speakers with a maximum of 20 minutes speaking time each. An Internet for the Common Good: <http://ci-journal.net/index.php/ciej/article/view/1099/1065> Engagement, Empowerment and Justice for All A Community Informatics Declaration Effective use of the Internet will benefit everyone. Currently the benefits of the Internet are distributed unequally: some people gain power, wealth and influence from using the Internet while others struggle for basic access. In our vision, people in their communities and everywhere - including the poor and marginalized in developing and developed countries, women and youth, indigenous peoples, older persons, those with disabilities -- will use the Internet to develop and exercise their civic intelligence and work together to address collective challenges. More than a technology or a marketplace, the Internet is a social environment, a community space for people to interact with the expectation that principles of equity, fairness and justice will prevail. Internet governance must ensure that this online social space functions effectively for the well-being of all. A community informatics approach to Internet governance supports equal distribution of Internet benefits and addresses longstanding social, economic, cultural and political injustices in this environment. Questions of social justice and equity through the Internet are central to how the Internet and society will evolve. People in different communities must be empowered to develop and adapt the Internet infrastructure to reflect their core values and ways of knowing. We support development of an Internet in which communities are the "first mile" and not the "last mile." We believe the primary purpose of the Internet is not to mine data and make knowledge a commodity for purchase and sale but rather to advance community goals equally and fairly within these distributed infrastructures. We aspire to an Internet effectively owned and controlled by the communities that use it and to Internet ownership that evolves through communities federated regionally, nationally and globally. The Internet's role as a community asset, a public good and a local community utility is more important than its role as a site for profit-making or as a global artifact. The access layer and the higher layers of applications and content should be community owned and controlled in a way that supports a rich ecology of commercial enterprises subject to and serving community and public interests. As citizens and community members in an Internet-enabled world we have a collective interest in how the Internet is governed. Our collective interests need to be expressed and affirmed in all fora discussing the future of the Internet. As a collective, and as members of civil society, we have developed a declaration for Internet governance based on principles of community informatics. We appreciate your interest and welcome your support. A just and equitable Internet provides: 1. Fair and equitable means to access and use the Internet: affordable by all and designed and deployed so that all may realize the benefits of effective use. The poor and marginalized, women, youth, indigenous peoples, older persons, those with disabilities, Internet users and non-users alike; no one, from any community globally, should be without Internet access. 2. Equitable access within communities to the benefits of the Internet, including information, opportunities to communicate, increased effectiveness of communications and information management, and opportunities to participate in system development and content creation. Everyone, within all communities, should have the right, the means and the opportunity to use the Internet to share the full intellectual heritage of humankind without undue cost or hindrance. 3. Respect for privacy -- people must be able to conveniently use the Internet in a way that is credibly protected against large-scale surveillance or interference by government authorities or corporate interests. 4. Infrastructure that ensures the maximum level of personal security and reliability. 5. Opportunities for all within all communities to build, manage, and own Internet infrastructure as and when it is needed. 6. Internet governance by democratic principles and processes - including privileging input from communities affected by decisions and ensuring inclusion of the widest possible perspectives supporting the development of our digital environments. 7. A peer-to-peer architecture with equal power and privilege for each node or end point and complete neutrality of the architecture and medium for all users and all applications. 8. Recognition that the local is a fundamental building block of all information and communications and the "global" is a "federation of locals." 9. Equal opportunity for all to connect and communicate in a language and culture of their choice. 10. Recognition and equal privileging of many types of knowledge and ways of knowing, building from the capacities of each individual, community and knowledge society. 11. The means for information freely provided on and through the Internet to be freely available for the use and benefit of all. 12. Support for collaboration, engagement, education, solidarity, and problem-solving as the stepping stones to civic intelligence and the capacity of communities, civil society, and all people to equitably and effectively engage in informed self-governance. Aside from seeking applications of collaborative technologies to M&S activities, the track seeks innovative contributions that deal with the application of M&S practices in the field of collaborative engineering platforms. These platforms are continuously becoming more complex, and therefore their design requires systematic approaches to meet the required quality of collaboration. This is important for two reasons: to reduce rework activities on the actual collaborative environment, and to maximize the productivity and the quality of the process the collaborative environment supports. M&S offers the methodologies and tools for such investigations and therefore it can be used to improve the quality of collaborative environments. Dear colleagues, In the context of the 9th International Conference on (Im)Politeness, which will be held at the University of Huddersfield (9 – 11 July 2014), we are organizing an invited panel on the language aggression and conflict. Language studies have for years tended to concentrate on the analysis of harmonious interactions. However, more recently, the study of acrimonious interaction has started gathering momentum. It is in fact a buzzword with remarkable contemporary currency, one that is instrumentalized as a constant search for new technologies, means of production, market adaptations, scientific discoveries and social changes. As a fundamental tenet in Western systems of thought, it is also ? and has long been ? inscribed within the West?s very view of itself as more successful and more ?progressive? than other societies. Note, for example, G.W.F. Hegel?s famous juxtaposition of Europe?s ever- changing art against the allegedly stagnant visual culture of India: the first modality accounted for the privileged position of the West as the locus of the emanation of universal Geist; while the latter stipulated an essentially ?un-progressive? timelessness in India. The Western valuation and definition of innovation has thereby been mobilized as a justification for diverse colonial, post-colonial and now neoliberal enterprises. It operates as a smoke screen to preserve dominant power regimes both within the West and globally, concealing simultaneously the biased valuation of cultural production, and the unequal distribution of technological and scientific headway among diverse social strata. This is the case even as the current global financial crisis challenges the West?s ability to regenerate perpetually. In fact, the stakes involved in the Western impetus to innovate seem to intensify even as recent projections of economic acceleration in several non-Western countries rouse fears that the West is losing ground as innovation?s main stimulant. The innovation paradigm is moreover implicit within the bulk of humanistic academic production. As a case in point, the Greenbergian approach to art history, which dominated much of the twentieth century, revolves indisputably around a teleology of formal innovation. Meanwhile, within a number of current academic discussions ? for instance those concerning experimentation and invention in the history of science (Galison); global art history (Elkins); visual culture studies (Moxey); history of ideas (Godin); the philosophy of mondialisation (Nancy); media archaeology (Parikka); technological obsolescence (Kittler); and the aesthetics of failure (Halberstam) ? innovation is tacitly treated with caution, if not skepticism. Given this tangle of collusions and complexities, how are we to approach and define innovation in academic discourse? Is the paradigm purely a means of disarming social pressure for an all-inclusive equalized prosperity; or might it be recuperated to provide a stimulus for sustainable growth? Can we understand innovation in a broader global spectrum without falling into the trap of cultural essentialism; or does this concept perpetuate Western-centric views and mores? Can the concept of innovation be used for the analysis of historical periods; or does it figure too easily in teleological narratives? With these questions in mind, we are opening an enquiry into the concept of innovation. We invite paper proposals addressing a broad range of academic disciplines and historical periods. Papers might address, but are by no means restricted to, the following questions: ? Socio-economic implications of innovation. How do societies and specific agents adapt to new conditions once their old ways of life have been destroyed? ? The politics of innovation. Does innovation bring betterment or deprivation? ? Dear colleagues, In the context of the 9th International Conference on (Im)Politeness, which will be held at the University of Huddersfield (9 – 11 July 2014), we are organizing an invited panel on the language aggression and conflict. Language studies have for years tended to concentrate on the analysis of harmonious interactions. However, more recently, the study of acrimonious interaction has started gathering momentum. It is in fact a buzzword with remarkable contemporary currency, one that is instrumentalized as a constant search for new technologies, means of production, market adaptations, scientific discoveries and social changes. As a fundamental tenet in Western systems of thought, it is also ? and has long been ? inscribed within the West?s very view of itself as more successful and more ?progressive? than other societies. Note, for example, G.W.F. Hegel?s famous juxtaposition of Europe?s ever- changing art against the allegedly stagnant visual culture of India: the first modality accounted for the privileged position of the West as the locus of the emanation of universal Geist; while the latter stipulated an essentially ?un-progressive? timelessness in India. The Western valuation and definition of innovation has thereby been mobilized as a justification for diverse colonial, post-colonial and now neoliberal enterprises. It operates as a smoke screen to preserve dominant power regimes both within the West and globally, concealing simultaneously the biased valuation of cultural production, and the unequal distribution of technological and scientific headway among diverse social strata. This is the case even as the current global financial crisis challenges the West?s ability to regenerate perpetually. In fact, the stakes involved in the Western impetus to innovate seem to intensify even as recent projections of economic acceleration in several non-Western countries rouse fears that the West is losing ground as innovation?s main stimulant. The innovation paradigm is moreover implicit within the bulk of humanistic academic production. As a case in point, the Greenbergian approach to art history, which dominated much of the twentieth century, revolves indisputably around a teleology of formal innovation. Meanwhile, within a number of current academic discussions ? for instance those concerning experimentation and invention in the history of science (Galison); global art history (Elkins); visual culture studies (Moxey); history of ideas (Godin); the philosophy of mondialisation (Nancy); media archaeology (Parikka); technological obsolescence (Kittler); and the aesthetics of failure (Halberstam) ? innovation is tacitly treated with caution, if not skepticism. Given this tangle of collusions and complexities, how are we to approach and define innovation in academic discourse? Is the paradigm purely a means of disarming social pressure for an all-inclusive equalized prosperity; or might it be recuperated to provide a stimulus for sustainable growth? Can we understand innovation in a broader global spectrum without falling into the trap of cultural essentialism; or does this concept perpetuate Western-centric views and mores? Can the concept of innovation be used for the analysis of historical periods; or does it figure too easily in teleological narratives? With these questions in mind, we are opening an enquiry into the concept of innovation. We invite paper proposals addressing a broad range of academic disciplines and historical periods. Papers might address, but are by no means restricted to, the following questions: ? Socio-economic implications of innovation. How do societies and specific agents adapt to new conditions once their old ways of life have been destroyed? ? The politics of innovation. Does innovation bring betterment or deprivation? ? What are the criteria of innovation? ? Challenging the Western canon of art built on the notions of style, progress, and originality ? Technological progress ? Patents ? Is Western-centrism pervasive in the concept of innovation? ? How does innovation affect personal identities (video games, Facebook, etc.)? ? How is innovation different from change? ? The contestations of innovation; the discursive counterpoints to innovation ? Centre vs. periphery; milieus of innovation ? As a result, globally distributed virtual teams now support the work of organizations across the spectrum of products and services. Such teams are used by a range of for-profit and non-profit organizations including businesses, government organizations, military, and educational institutions. These organizations are increasingly employing individuals located in different nations to engage in various types of collaborative work via ICTs. As a result of such factors, much of the modern workforce is now migrating toward a virtual model of work, and forces associated with globalization are changing the nature of competitiveness in the new economy. Individuals, in turn, must often adapt rapidly to virtual environments and do so with little or no formal preparation in the types of professional communication practices essential to success in such contexts. As a result, individuals working in internationally distributed teams must generally learn from their mistakes, an effective but often costly approach. Moreover, individuals must also often adapt to working in an environment in which they are regularly paired with new colleagues and clients from different nations, cultures, and language groups. Thus, the modern distributed workplace requires employees to account for and address three central factors—technology, culture, and language—in order to succeed in most work-related tasks. An all-important question arising from this situation is, “How can we better prepare these individuals for this international, online context?” A 2012 IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication special issue on global training reveals, however, that very little information on training—particularly global virtual communication training—has been published in the major professional communication journals in the last ten years. Such a gap needs to be closed if educators and trainers alike wish to prepare adult learners to be successful participants in current (and future) business practices and processes. This special issue on education and training for globally distributed virtual teams seeks to address this topic through articles on how best to prepare individuals to succeed in this new workplace. In particular, the editors are interested in articles that answer questions such as: • What types of education and training are most desired by managers and participants of global virtual teams? • How can organizations best prepare virtual team members for working across boundaries of language? What issues affect translation and terminology? What do team members most need to know about World Englishes, English as a Second Language, or English for Specific Purposes? • How can organizations better prepare employees to collaborate and cooperate online and across cultural boundaries? • How can social media be used to prepare individuals for working in intercultural online contexts? • What legal issues can affect or should be included in global virtual team training? What should participants in global virtual teams know about proprietary information and privacy? In addition, the editors of this special issue welcome articles such as: • Industry commentaries (refer to “types of articles” below). • Critical analyses of the many published task/technology models that support global virtual teams. • Critical analyses of virtual team studies in areas such as technical training, adult education, human resources development, educational technology, human performance technology, technical communication, and user experience design. The guest editors are also interested in discussing other prospective topics with potential contributors. Types of articles connexions publishes four types of articles: • Original research articles of 5,000 to 7,000 words in length • Review articles of 3,000 to 5,000 words in length • Focused commentary and industry perspectives articles of 500 to 3,000 words in length • Teaching cases of 3,000 to 5,000 words in length Submission Guidelines Interested individuals should send a 150-200 word proposal to connexionsspecialissue(a)gmail.com Proposals should be sent as a .docx, .doc, or .rtf file attached to an email message with the subject line: “Proposal for Special Issue on Globally Distributed Virtual Teams.” All proposals should include the submitter’s name, affiliation, and email address as well as a working title for the proposed article. Looking for sources (academic or not) that talk about things like proper message/paragraph length, structure (as in something similar to the pyramid structure of news articles), etc. Even sources that discuss advocacy emails in general (e.g. as part of content analyses) would help.
