It is in fact a buzzword with remarkable contemporary currency, one that is instrumentalized as a constant search for new technologies, means of production, market adaptations, scientific discoveries and social changes. As a fundamental tenet in Western systems of thought, it is also – and has long been – inscribed within the West’s very view of itself as more successful and more ‘progressive’ than other societies. Note, for example, G.W.F. Hegel’s famous juxtaposition of Europe’s ever- changing art against the allegedly stagnant visual culture of India: the first modality accounted for the privileged position of the West as the locus of the emanation of universal Geist; while the latter stipulated an essentially ‘un-progressive’ timelessness in India. The Western valuation and definition of innovation has thereby been mobilized as a justification for diverse colonial, post-colonial and now neoliberal enterprises. It operates as a smoke screen to preserve dominant power regimes both within the West and globally, concealing simultaneously the biased valuation of cultural production, and the unequal distribution of technological and scientific headway among diverse social strata. This is the case even as the current global financial crisis challenges the West’s ability to regenerate perpetually. In fact, the stakes involved in the Western impetus to innovate seem to intensify even as recent projections of economic acceleration in several non-Western countries rouse fears that the West is losing ground as innovation’s main stimulant. The innovation paradigm is moreover implicit within the bulk of humanistic academic production. As a case in point, the Greenbergian approach to art history, which dominated much of the twentieth century, revolves indisputably around a teleology of formal innovation. Meanwhile, within a number of current academic discussions – for instance those concerning experimentation and invention in the history of science (Galison); global art history (Elkins); visual culture studies (Moxey); history of ideas (Godin); the philosophy of mondialisation (Nancy); media archaeology (Parikka); technological obsolescence (Kittler); and the aesthetics of failure (Halberstam) – innovation is tacitly treated with caution, if not skepticism. Given this tangle of collusions and complexities, how are we to approach and define innovation in academic discourse? Is the paradigm purely a means of disarming social pressure for an all-inclusive equalized prosperity; or might it be recuperated to provide a stimulus for sustainable growth? Can we understand innovation in a broader global spectrum without falling into the trap of cultural essentialism; or does this concept perpetuate Western-centric views and mores? Can the concept of innovation be used for the analysis of historical periods; or does it figure too easily in teleological narratives? With these questions in mind, we are opening an enquiry into the concept of innovation. We invite paper proposals addressing a broad range of academic disciplines and historical periods. Papers might address, but are by no means restricted to, the following questions: • Socio-economic implications of innovation. How do societies and specific agents adapt to new conditions once their old ways of life have been destroyed? • The politics of innovation. Does innovation bring betterment or deprivation? • What are the criteria of innovation? • Challenging the Western canon of art built on the notions of style, progress, and originality • Technological progress • Patents • Is Western-centrism pervasive in the concept of innovation? • How does innovation affect personal identities (video games, Facebook, etc.)? • How is innovation different from change? • The contestations of innovation; the discursive counterpoints to innovation • Centre vs. periphery; milieus of innovation • Instances of anachronism masked as innovation in culture from the Middle Ages to the present day. Recurring regimes: the old in the new, the new in the old • Does materiality matter in innovation? • Temporality and innovation • Commodity culture and innovation We welcome proposals for 20-minute presentations. The language of social network theory often casts projects in terms of their connectivity, neglecting material and immaterial mobilities. The increasing proliferation of technologies such as cellular data systems or infrastructure projects which enable new forms of mobility, are just some of the many recent developments that force us to question the conceptual lens through which we view networks. We welcome papers that study the (intimate) relationships and collaborations enabled through technologies and the ways in which they function as a major tool for the re-assembling of networks throughout the world, both "traditional" and otherwise. Panelists are encouraged to critically engage with concepts such as "actor-network theory", "social network analysis" or "assemblages" and papers may expand the framework of network theory or dismiss it altogether. The (potential for) innovations stemming from re-defining, re-configuring and re-purposing of mobile technologies are of particular interest. The panel seeks to challenge notions of modern-day affiliation and association by taking into account societies labelled both "developed" and "backward". Panellists are encouraged to probe possibilities for bringing about new orders of communication and collaboration, ones that break boundaries of tradition, drive innovation, perhaps even spur "revolution" - be it through social media, mobile phones, mobile banking or other technologies. The panel has no geographic focus and papers can either be entirely conceptual, or draw upon particular ethnographic case studies. Soliciting opinions about using Amazon's Mechanical Turk (aka Mturk) for survey participant recruitment

While Qualtrics and SurveyMonkey seem to be generally well respected, they also come with hefty price tags for participant recruitment ($5-10 per American respondent). Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (aka Mturk), on the other hand, can recruit participants for far less (<$1/respondent). What is the AoIR consensus on utilizing Mturk? I’ve seen articles both for and against using the service. POSTER SUBMISSIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED Poster submissions can now be made using conftool. Click Here To Access<https://www.conftool.com/iscram2014/> The ISCRAM 2014 poster session will provide an opportunity for authors to interact informally with conference attendees, using a standard-size poster as a visual aid. Presenting a poster is also a good way to discuss and receive feedback on a work in progress that has not been fully developed into a paper. To facilitate this interaction, the ISCRAM 2014 poster session will be held in conference common areas, where foot traffic is expected to be high. Poster proposals should be submitted on the regular ISCRAM template<http://iscram2014.org/sites/default/files/misc/ISCRAM2014_PaperTemplate.doc>, consisting of an extended abstract, with a maximum of two pages describing the project that would be the topic of the poster for presentation and discussion. You might include a small version of a figure or two that would be in the poster, such as a screen shot of a system you will be describing. Posters are submitted to a track using Conftool<https://www.conftool.com/iscram2014/>. The deadline is January 20, 2014. Doctoral Colloquium attendees are required to present a poster as part of their attendance in the colloquium. If your poster proposal is accepted, you will be notified and then you can prepare the actual poster. Posters may be a maximum of 45”x 45” (114.3 cm x 114.3 cm). Posters will be hung on our poster display boards with Velcro©-style hook-and-loop dots. The dots should be the “hook” side as the stand provides the “loop” side to attach. The conference will provide each poster with about ten (10) dots, which should be sufficient to hang an average weight 45”x45” poster. No tape, staples, push-pins or thumbtacks may be used to hang your poster.

Santiago, Chile, September 1-4, 2014 http://ht.acm.org/ht2014/ February 21, 2014: Workshop proposals due ========================================================================= The ACM Hypertext conference focuses on all aspects of modern hypertext research including social media, semantic web, dynamic and computed hypertext and hypermedia as well as narrative systems and applications. Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit proposals for workshops to be held in conjunction with the 25th ACM Conference on Hypertext and Social Media conference. Hypertext 2014 workshops will provide participants with opportunities to discuss and explore emerging areas of Hypertext and Social Media with fellow students, researchers, and practitioners from Industry and Academia. The goals of theworkshops are to provide a a more informal setting for exchanging opinions, to share experiences, presenting ideas, foster research community and identify open problems and/or explore directions for future research. As such, they also offer a good opportunity for researchers to present their work and to obtain feedback from an interested community in an interactive atmosphere. Proposals are especially encouraged on emerging topics, somehow related to the main conference tracks (links and connection between people, open data and the semantic of things, user experience and adaptive linking), but are not limited to other (novel) topics which might be of interest for the hypertext community. Acceptance ofworkshop proposals will be based on the experience and background of the organizers in the topic, and on the relevance of the subject matter with regard to the topics addressed in the main conference. We welcome proposals for different types of workshops, from working groups on a specific topic to more traditional conference-like workshops. However, we prefer interactive workshops that guarantee richer active interactions among participants and provide significant room for controversial and stimulating discussions. We preferentially would rather proposals for half-day workshops. The need for a full-day workshop should be motivated by some particular reason. Potential proposers are invited to discuss their ideas with the workshop chair before working out a detailed proposal. ===========================PROPOSAL FORMAT ============================= The workshop proposals – not longer than 5 pages - have to be sent by email to theworkshop chairs, and must contain the following information: - Title of the workshop and acronym - Workshop organisers (affiliation, contact details, homepage, and prior experiences with workshop organization. - Keywords (describing the main themes of the workshop) (from 3 to 5) - Abstract (up to 70 words) - Description of the workshop (topics and goals of the workshop) (up to 500 words) - Motivation (why the topic is of interest for the conference audience) - Workshop format (paper presentations, invited talks, panels, demo, discussion, etc) - Submissions format (position papers, research papers, demo, poster, presentations..) and, for each type of submission, specify the features (length of the papers, template, etc) - Intended audience and expected attendance (with historical data of past versions of the workshop, if available) - Initial list of (potential) members of the program committee - Requested duration (half day or full day- in this case, motivation for the need of a full day) - Previous editions of the workshop series (if applicable) (URLs, conference it was co-located with, number of registrants, number of submissions, number of accepted papers, and any other relevant information) The Workshop Proceedings will be published in the ACM Hypertext Extended Proceedings. This particular student is also interested in learning about the practical end of social media. Kind of like a "best practices" book. Or even the industry end of social media...
