DIY Revolution manifesto for open-access publishing
by Işık Barış Fidaner 02 Jan '14

02 Jan '14

IJŽS publish "DIY Revolution" manifesto for open-access publishing in the humanities Excerpt: *"We can allow for and release Copernican revolution. That is, rather than Ptolemizing print technology and culture by retrofitting existing models and structures so that the previous paradigm continues to operate, we can work to reconfigure the entire system. Instead of twisting, contorting, and restricting the Internet so that it operates as some kind of digital emulation of the printing press, we can recognize the truly revolutionary potential of this technological innovation—direct peer-to-peer distribution and access to information that operates without the established and increasingly expensive intermediaries and gatekeepers. Understood in this fashion, open access publishing can be positioned as a kind of revolutionary transformation. It not only reconfigures the basic structure of scholarly communication but deposes powerful authority figures and puts everything on the line. This is obviously an enticing opportunity but there are several challenges that go along with it."* http://gunkelweb.com/articles/Gunkel_IJZS_DIY.pdf In his facebook post containing a PDF link to this manifesto, David Gunkel ( niu.edu) described it as "a position paper concerning our experience at IJZS and Zizek Studies" referring to his continued collaboration with Paul Taylor (leeds.ac.uk) since 2007 in the peer-reviewed journal IJŽS and the associated "Zizek Studies" discussion group on facebook with presently ~10k members. He was sharing this document in anticipation of next week's Open Access panel at the MLA (mla.org) convention in Chicago. A few days prior to this manifesto, Vol 7.4 of IJŽS had been published and announced**. Among the articles included in this volume is a Žižekian-Lacanian analysis of the 2007 financial crisis, titled "Capitalism's traumatic encounter with lack".

Please forward widely... ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Adrienne Shaw <community(a)icahdq.org> Date: Thu, Jan 2, 2014 at 9:49 AM Subject: ICA GLBT: Preconference Reminder! To: adrienneshaw13(a)gmail.com Greetings and Happy New Year to those on the Gregorian calendar, Just a reminder that the deadline for submitting to our Preconference is January 20th. The call is below as a reminder. To clarify, following the unconference style you are not submitting research papers to this preconference. You are proposing discussions, workshops, skill shares, problem-solving sessions, etc. Unconferences are all about participation and discussion. If you want to participate, but not lead a session, you will still need to register as a participant. Let us know if you have any questions, Adrienne Shaw and Travers Scott ICA GLBT Chairs Please feel free to distribute widely. Call for Proposals ICA Preconference/Unconference on Technologies of Sex and Gender: Queer Theories and Subjects Sponsored by the Gay Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Studies Interest Group 9 am- 4 pm, May 22, 2014 University of Washington, Department of Communication Cost: Free This ICA preconference brings together scholars, activists, and artists working on gender, sexuality, communication, media, and technology to examine, debate, and plan new projects, including: · Investigating how the strategies activists and artists have developed in this field can transform academic research practice, as well as how academics can contribute to activist and artistic technology projects · Providing an interdisciplinary environment in which LGBT, queer, and gender-nonconforming technology scholars, activists, and artists can network with each other, learn about current work in these fields, forge partnerships, and develop new collaborative projects · Creating applications, games, and art that explore, celebrate, or undermine sexualized and gendered subjectivities. · Researching how LGBT, queer, and gender nonconforming populations employ technologies in specific historical and cultural contexts (particularly by looking at the intersections of gender, race, nationality, class, and sexuality in these contexts) · Discussing how queer, transgender, and feminist theories can be brought to bear on technology research, and how these fields can and must transform each other in the process · Exploring how queer, transgender, and feminist theories can be integrated into technology design practice · Ascertaining how scholars have used and can use technologies to study sexual- and gender-nonconforming communities, including their own The preconference’s goal is to provoke encounters that would set in motion future collaborations and networks among artists, activists, and scholars. It utilizes the “unconference” format, in which participants, rather than organizers, decide on the agenda from among their own submitted proposals. This allows for more intensive interaction, higher-level conversations, and a more engaged, productive experience than traditional academic conferences. SCHEDULE AND FORMAT: · Today: You read this CFP. · By January 20: You submit a Session Leader or Participation proposal to ica.glbt(a)gmail.com. See below for a description of the proposal format. · February 1: The organizers will send an acceptance letter to everyone who has submitted a proposal. All proposals will be posted on the Technologies of Sex and Gender website. · February 1 – April 30: All applicants comment online on the proposals, voting for the sessions they are likely to attend and offering suggestions for changes and additions. · May 10: The organizers create and post a working schedule for the preconference and notify session applicants of the likelihood of their session being included. May 22: The unconference · The first morning session will introduce the unconference format. Attendees will take part in an open vote on the schedule, making suggestions, changes, or additions. The schedule will be finalized in this first session, after which the other sessions will begin. Depending on level of interest and number of attendees, there may be simultaneous sessions. · Sessions will proceed throughout the morning following the proposals, but with an openness to exploring new directions that may organically arise (often new sessions are added throughout the day, sessions are combined, or break-out groups are formed over the course of unconferences). · During the lunch break, attendees will give a series of “Speed Presentations”: 1- to 2-minute, rapid-fire presentations about one of their current projects. These are intended as very brief introductions, not extended discussions. Attendees will have an opportunity to contact each other later should they want to learn more about or join a specific project. · Afternoon sessions will proceed, following the same structure as the morning sessions. · At the end of the day, we will lead a concluding session in which attendees can share and integrate the day’s explorations SUBMITTING A PROPOSAL If you wish to participate in the unconference, please submit either a Session Proposal or a Participation Proposal. * Session Leaders will submit a 300 word proposal of a conversation topic to explore, a research question to develop, a problem to grapple with, a skill to teach, a technology application to demonstrate, or an artwork to present. Each proposal should give enough information to help attendees decide which sessions to vote for and participate in. In particular, Session Leaders are encouraged to suggest how their proposal fits with the unconference theme and to explain their expertise and experience. Those who propose a session will be expected to arrive prepared to facilitate that session. * Participants will also submit 300 word proposal, including a biographical statement describing their interests in the preconference and an idea for a 2-minute rapid-fire research presentation. All proposals should address the conference themes described above. Sessions should be of interest to communication scholars, but we warmly encourage interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, multimodal, or media-based endeavors. Session Leader and Participation proposals should be submitted by January 20, 2014 to: ica.glbt(a)gmail.com The unconference is co-sponsored by the Popular Communication, Feminist Scholarship, Ethnicity and Race in Communication, Global Communication and Social Change, Communication History, and Game Studies Divisions/Interest Groups. It is also supported by the Department of Communication at the University of Washington, the School of Media and Communication at Temple University, The Stranger, the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences at UW Bothell, and the Greater Seattle Business Association. Re: [Air-L] Papers on attitudes towards SNS non-users?
by xpage＠ics.uci.edu 01 Jan '14

01 Jan '14

Hi David, Perhaps this is relevant. We studied non users of location-sharing social networks, and a lot of the data pointed to similar factors playing a role in non use for other social media. We discovered a communication style trait that explained over fifty percent of the variance of adoption as well as low usage in our studies, including a nationwide geographically balanced survey (http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?doid=2493432.2493487 or http://bit.ly/FYILSSN) Other differences between users and non users included privacy management tactics and perceptions (some of this is published in these papers http://bit.ly/BoundPreserve, http://bit.ly/tangledWeb) In our qualitative research we did not see as much "stigmatization" as different expectations regarding social norms and etiquette. Happy to discuss more. -Xinru Ph.D. Information & Computer Science, Dept. WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO GO VIRAL
by Shriram Venkatraman 31 Dec '13

31 Dec '13

*WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO GO VIRAL* *Daniel Miller* I guess most of you will have seen some items of news based on my initial blog about Facebook no longer being cool amongst teens. It was not just NBC TV news, I had emails from Taiwan to Chile telling me it was out in local languages. I have now published a new blog post called Scholarship, Integrity and Going Viral athttp://blogs.ucl.ac.uk/social-networking/ which reflects on the experience and responds to some of the criticism. Actually I entirely stand by my original assertion. My ethnographic research has shown that in terms of coolness the phrase `dead and buried’ was not an exaggeration. The statistics may not help, the teens don’t leave Facebook, they keep it for family connections. But they stop using it to communicate with peers. The schools know this perfectly well. They communicate with pupils through Twitter, never Facebook. If you doubt me, just ask the teens. The problem was that journalists used that phrase to refer to the prospects of Facebook as a company, while our research shows that in some of our other fieldsites such as India or Brazil there is no evidence for any decline in its attraction amongst teens. But you might look at the new blog post because it is a salutary lesson in keeping control over what you post. Journalists constantly try and persuade you that you `need’ to sex-up your academic language, but you just might want to resist this. Thanks, Shriram Venkatraman www.gsmis.org http://www.ucl.ac.uk/social-networking @UCLSocNet

ACM Web Science Conference (WebSci'14), June 23-26, 2014
by Giovanni Luca Ciampaglia 30 Dec '13

30 Dec '13

*** Apologies for multiple postings *** CALL FOR PAPERS & CALL FOR WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIAL PROPOSALS ACM Web Science Conference (WebSci'14), June 23-26, 2014 Bloomington, Indiana, USA websci14.org / @WebSciConf / #WebSci14 Deadline for papers: Feb. 23rd 2014 Deadline for workshop & tutorial proposals: Jan. 17th 2014 Web Science is the emergent science of the people, organizations, applications, and of policies that shape and are shaped by the Web, the largest informational artifact constructed by humans in history. Web Science embraces the study of the Web as a vast universal information network of people and communities. As such, Web Science includes the study of social networks whose work, expression, and play take place on the Web. The social sciences and computational sciences meet in Web Science and complement one another: Studying human behavior and social interaction contributes to our understanding of the Web, while Web data is transforming how social science is conducted. The Web presents us with a great opportunity as well as an obligation: If we are to ensure the Web benefits humanity we must do our best to understand it. Call for Papers The Web Science conference is inherently interdisciplinary, as it attempts to integrate computer and information sciences, communication, linguistics, sociology, psychology, economics, law, political science, philosophy, digital humanities, and other disciplines in pursuit of an understanding of the Web. This conference is unique in the manner in which it brings these disciplines together in creative and critical dialogue, and we invite papers from all the above disciplines, and in particular those that cross traditional disciplinary boundaries. Following the success of WebSci'09 in Athens, WebSci'10 in Raleigh, WebSci'11 in Koblenz, WebSci '12 in Evanston, and WebSci'13 in Paris, for the 2014 conference we are seeking papers and posters that describe original research, analysis, and practice in the field of Web Science, as well as work that discusses novel and thought-provoking ideas and works-in-progress. Possible topics for submissions include, but are not limited to, the following: * Analysis of human behavior using social media, mobile devices, and online communities * Methodological challenges of analyzing Web-based * large-scale social interaction * Data-mining and network analysis of the Web and human communities on the Web * Detailed studies of micro-level processes and interactions * on the Web * Collective intelligence, collaborative production, and social computing * Theories and methods for computational social science on the Web * Studies of public health and health-related behavior on the Web * The architecture and philosophy of the Web * The intersection of design and human interaction on the Web * Economics and social innovation on the Web * Governance, democracy, intellectual property, and the commons * Personal data, trust, and privacy * Web and social media research ethics * Studies of Linked Data, the Cloud, and digital eco-systems * Big data and the study of the Web * Web access, literacy, and development * Knowledge, education, and scholarship on and through the Web * People-driven Web technologies, including crowd-sourcing, open data, and new interfaces * Digital humanities * Arts & culture on the Web or engaging audiences using Web resources * Web archiving techniques and scholarly uses of Web archives * New research questions and thought-provoking ideas A separate Call for Workshop and Tutorial Proposals is on the conference website at: http://www.websci14.org/#call-for-workshop-and-tutorial-proposals Submission Web Science is necessarily a very selective single track conference with a rigorous review process. To accommodate the distinct traditions of its many disciplines, we provide three different submission formats: full papers, short papers, and posters. For all types of submissions, inclusion in the ACM DL proceedings will be by default, but not mandatory (opt-out via EasyChair). All accepted research papers (full and short papers) will be presented during the single-track conference. All accepted posters will be given a spot in the single-track lightning talk session, and room to present their papers during a dedicated poster session. Full research papers (5 to 10 pages, ACM double column, 20 mins presentation including Q&A) Full research papers should present new results and original work that has not been previously published. Research papers should present substantial theoretical, empirical, methodological, or policy-oriented contributions to research and/or practice. Short research papers (up to 5 pages, ACM double column, 15 mins presentation including Q&A) Short research papers should present new results and original work that has not been previously published. Research papers can present preliminary theoretical, empirical, methodological, or policy-oriented contributions to research and/or practice. Posters (up to 2 pages, ACM double column, lightning talk + poster presentation) Extended abstracts for posters, which should be in English, can be up to 2 pages. Submission instructions Full and short paper and poster submissions should be formatted according to the official ACM SIG proceedings template (WebSci archive format at http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates) Please submit papers using EasyChair at https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=websci2014. Other creative submission formats (flexible formats) Other types of creative submissions are also encouraged, and the exact format and style of presentation are open. Examples might include artistic performances or installations, interactive exhibits, demonstrations, or other creative formats. For these submissions, the proposers should make clear both what they propose to do, and any special requirements they would need to successfully do it (in terms of space, time, technology, etc.) Review The Web Science program committee consists of a program committee that covers all relevant areas of Web Science. Each submission will be refereed by three PC members and one short meta review written by a Co-PC chair, to cover both the research background of each submission as well as the necessary interdisciplinary aspects. (Optional) Archival Proceedings in the ACM Digital Library All accepted papers and posters will by default appear in the Web Science 2014 Conference Proceedings and can also be made available through the ACM Digital Library, in the same length and format of the submission unless indicated otherwise (those wishing not to be indexed and archived can "opt out" of the proceedings). Call for Workshops and Tutorial Proposals The Web Science conference will start with tutorials and workshops that will promote in-depth training and discussions with the goal of understanding how people, organizations, applications, and policies shape and are shaped by the Web. In agreement with the spirit of the conference, the tutorials and workshops are intended to create opportunities for interdisciplinary discussion around themes and methods that are central to the study of the Web. The list of themes includes, but is not restricted to, 1. Methods for data mining and network research; 2. The study of social dynamics (i.e. political campaigns, censorship) using Web data; 3. The relationship between technical design and individual behaviour (i.e. the impact of by-default design on privacy); 4. The future of the Web in an era of increasing mobile applications; 5. The incentives and limits of regulation; 6. Participatory systems and crowdsourcing; 7. The dynamics of information creation (supply) and consumption (demand) and its relation to real world events. We will give priority to proposals that approach their topic from the perspective of various disciplines, spanning the divide between the social and computer sciences. Tutorials and workshops can be designed as half or full day events. Workshops can have a mixture of panel presentations and invited speakers, but presentations should reflect the diversity of approaches that characterize the multidisciplinary nature of Web Science. For more information about chairs, submission, review, deadlines, etc, please see the full call at http://websci14.org/#call-for-workshop-and-tutorial-proposals or contact websci2014ws(a)easychair.org. Impending end of Facebook use among teens debunked
by David Brake 30 Dec '13

30 Dec '13

Dear all, I don't know whether you have seen the stories going around about Facebook being "dead" to teens? It's based on an exaggerated misreading of Daniel Miller's ethnographic research - if you want to follow it up or people/students ask about it I have written a piece in The Conversation http://buff.ly/JECYuf giving some background information and statistics to put the story into perspective. TL;DR version - Facebook use might decline somewhat in the coming months and years but given the amount it's being used by teens it has a long way to fall before it's anything close to dead. If you've got better stats than the Pew and OxIS data I was able to source, let me know and I will try to add them in.
