ACM Hypertext Call for Workshop Proposals
by Denis Parra 09 Jan '14

09 Jan '14

Apologies for cross-posting =============== CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS ================ In conjunction with Hypertext 2014, the 25th ACM Conference on Hypertext and Social Media. Santiago, Chile, September 1-4, 2014 http://ht.acm.org/ht2014/ February 21, 2014: Workshop proposals due ========================================================================= The ACM Hypertext conference focuses on all aspects of modern hypertext research including social media, semantic web, dynamic and computed hypertext and hypermedia as well as narrative systems and applications. Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit proposals for workshops to be held in conjunction with the 25th ACM Conference on Hypertext and Social Media conference. Hypertext 2014 workshops will provide participants with opportunities to discuss and explore emerging areas of Hypertext and Social Media with fellow students, researchers, and practitioners from Industry and Academia. The goals of theworkshops are to provide a a more informal setting for exchanging opinions, to share experiences, presenting ideas, foster research community and identify open problems and/or explore directions for future research. As such, they also offer a good opportunity for researchers to present their work and to obtain feedback from an interested community in an interactive atmosphere. Proposals are especially encouraged on emerging topics, somehow related to the main conference tracks (links and connection between people, open data and the semantic of things, user experience and adaptive linking), but are not limited to other (novel) topics which might be of interest for the hypertext community. Acceptance ofworkshop proposals will be based on the experience and background of the organizers in the topic, and on the relevance of the subject matter with regard to the topics addressed in the main conference. We welcome proposals for different types of workshops, from working groups on a specific topic to more traditional conference-like workshops. However, we prefer interactive workshops that guarantee richer active interactions among participants and provide significant room for controversial and stimulating discussions. We preferentially would rather proposals for half-day workshops. The need for a full-day workshop should be motivated by some particular reason. Potential proposers are invited to discuss their ideas with the workshop chair before working out a detailed proposal. ===========================PROPOSAL FORMAT ============================= The workshop proposals – not longer than 5 pages - have to be sent by email to theworkshop chairs, and must contain the following information: - Title of the workshop and acronym - Workshop organisers (affiliation, contact details, homepage, and prior experiences with workshop organization. - Keywords (describing the main themes of the workshop) (from 3 to 5) - Abstract (up to 70 words) - Description of the workshop (topics and goals of the workshop) (up to 500 words) - Motivation (why the topic is of interest for the conference audience) - Workshop format (paper presentations, invited talks, panels, demo, discussion, etc) - Submissions format (position papers, research papers, demo, poster, presentations..) and, for each type of submission, specify the features (length of the papers, template, etc) - Intended audience and expected attendance (with historical data of past versions of the workshop, if available) - Initial list of (potential) members of the program committee - Requested duration (half day or full day- in this case, motivation for the need of a full day) - Previous editions of the workshop series (if applicable) (URLs, conference it was co-located with, number of registrants, number of submissions, number of accepted papers, and any other relevant information) The Workshop Proceedings will be published in the ACM Hypertext Extended Proceedings. If the organizers have addition plans for dissemination (for example, a special issue of a journal) this needs to specified in the proposal. =============== ORGANIZATION OF WORKSHOP =============== After the acceptance of a workshop proposal, the organizer(s) should: - Create and distribute a Call for Papers and a Call for Participation; - Create a Web page for the workshop, with the call for papers and the information about the workshop organization and timeline. The link of the web site will be published on the Conference Web site; - Create a Program Committee; - Review and select contributions to be included in the workshop proceedings (at least 2 reviewers for each paper); - Schedule and coordinate the workshop activities. - Put together accepted papers into electronic workshop proceedings, to be published in the Extended Proceedings of ACM Hypertext 2014. =============== IMPORTANT DATES =============== February 21, 2014: Workshop proposals due March 7, 2014: Decisions announced September 1, 2014: Workshop and Tutorial day =============== SUGGESTED TIMELINE =============== Workshop web site: March 14, 2014 Workshop Call for Papers: March 21, 2014 Paper submission deadline: May 23, 2014 Notification to authors: June 6, 2014 ================== WORKSHOP CHAIRS ================== Federica Cena, University of Torino, Italy E-mail: cena(a)di.unito.it Web: http://www.di.unito.it/~cena/ Christoph Trattner, University of Gaz, Austria E-mail: trattner.christoph(a)gmail.com web: http://christophtrattner.info ================== Thanks, Denis Parra Local and Publicity chair, HT 2014 CS Department, PUC Chile http://ht.acm.org/ht2014/

Books on social media
by Burcu Bakioglu 09 Jan '14

09 Jan '14

Hi all, Looks like I'll be leading an independent study on social media with one of my students. I have a good amount of books on the topic but I just wanted to inquire which ones you know have worked out best in your classes. This particular student is also interested in learning about the practical end of social media. Kind of like a "best practices" book. Or even the industry end of social media... Again, have some things that addresses the latter question, but want to know which books you would recommend. Any takers? Thank you in advance :) -- Thanks, Burcu S. The Internet Censorship is Getting Deeper in Turkey
by F. Mutlu Binark 07 Jan '14

07 Jan '14

The law proposal and its justification, which has been presented to the presidency of the Turkish Parliament by the approval of Justice and Development Party about the change in “The regulation of internet-based broadcasting and the struggle with crimes that are committed via these broadcasting” is a threatening text in many ways. The motion, which is expected to be passed inattentively within an omnibus bill will not solve the existing problems. It includes suggestions that would deteriorate the current status. Firstly, at the justification part of the motion, there is not a reference to the decision of European Human Rights Court against Turkey with regard to this law (no. 5651). This decision, which has been made as a consequence of Ahmet Yıldırım Case that Alternative Informatics Association took it to the EHRC, approved the opposition of this law against freedom of expression. What Internet users need in Turkey is a reform of this law in terms of rights and freedoms and all of the access restrictions should be excluded from the regulations. However, the motion suggests the exact opposite by centralizing and empowering the access restrictions. The motion also pays no attention to the views of NGOs, which are important actors of the subject. Each NGO that work within the informatics field in Turkey is strongly criticizing this law. Moreover, not only NGOs but also a great number of lawyers, bureaucrats, politicians and internet publishers also criticize the law. In contrast to the motion, they do not consider access restrictions as a solution. It’s really sad to see the motion uses “the discrimination card” to justify the restrictions. Censorship never should be considered as a solution to solve racism, hatred speech and sexism. Since we have lots of examples of how the government interprets and enforces this kind of laws in the recent history of Turkey, we’re concerned that this justification will cause much more dangerous enforcements in the next days. The motion proposes to apply the IP and URL based access restriction methods along with the domain name restriction which is the current restriction method in Turkey. Also the motion adds the term of “et cetera” to define the restrictions which may help the government to easily apply different and dangerous restriction methods. As if IP and URL based access restriction methods aren’t scary and dangerous enough! Applying the URL based access restriction method actively; the internet censorship level in Turkey will reach the internet censorship level in China in a few years. To achieve these methods the ISPs will have to make some changes and configurations on their systems which will lead us to a slow, controlling and monitored Internet. On the other hand The ISP Union proposition will threaten net neutrality and help large companies to entirely dominate the market. Only the companies with the proper ban and control utilities can be a member of this unity and the other non-member companies cannot able to provide internet services anymore which leads some of them to file for bankruptcy and hand the market in to the big players. Decreasing agent numbers on the market will help the government to control and monitor users much more easily. Rising of the controlling and surveillance because of the Weak compotation on the market will be a threat for our rights and freedoms and especially for net neutrality. The projected period for the ISPs to retain data is 1-2 years which is a very long period. The Government’s need for retaining data for this long, brings to mind the possibility of using the data to profile people for various purposes or even worse to tag them. Considering all the subjects we mentioned above, it’s safe to say this regulation will make the situation much more worse. We believe that amending Law No: 5651 will only empower the parts of the law which are criticized by the people for a very long time. As we stated in our Association’s “The State of Internet in Turkey in 2013 Report” [1] what should be done, is not to extend censorship and banning policies but to bridge digital divide, to popularize the usage of internet and to improve the new media literacy. As the Alternative Informatics Association we are in the favor of a freer and less controlled internet where people freely express themselves and access all the information they need without any surveillance. Unfortunately this regulation ignores the objectivity of the networks, makes it easier to restrict the freedom of speech, controlling and surveillance on the internet by establishing monopoly. Carrying a motion with this content will cause the internet in Turkey to plunge into the darkness permanently. We invite the members of the parliament who legislate law in behalf of internet users, the users, NGOs who represent them and the subject matter experts to consider the verdict of (ECHR). We also invite our citizens to look after the Internet and to support the events actively which will be held Worldwide against censorship, control and surveillance acts. 2nd Call for Participation: Participatory Design with Persons Living with Cognitive or Sensory Impairments - Workshop@CHI2014
by Niels Hendriks 07 Jan '14

07 Jan '14

Are you interested in participatory design and do you work with users with impairments? We organize a workshop on participatory design for persons with cognitive or sensory impairments at CHI2014<http://pdwithimpairmentschi2014.wordpress.com/>in Toronto, Canada. This workshop will be held on April 26. Workshop on participatory design for users living with cognitive or sensory impairments Involving people with impairments in the design process is very challenging, especially when impairments affect cognitive or sensory functions. People with such impairments may have substantial problems with thought processes and communication, including understanding abstractions, sequencing thoughts and actions, understanding symbols, and interpreting social cues. Many participatory design techniques are based on these processes and are therefore not usable, or need to be adjusted for people with impairments. Workshop aims This workshop aims to: 1) bring together people who are active in the topic of the workshop to exchange ideas and experiences regarding participatory design techniques that were designed for, or adapted to people with impairments. 2) identify general guidelines for doing participatory design with people living with cognitive or sensory impairments. Workshop setup The workshop will start from the results of two workshops held at the Participatory Design Conference 2012 and INTERACT 2013 as well as from the experiences of the workshop's participants. Based on this, we will identify general guidelines for doing participatory design with people living with cognitive or sensory impairments. As such, much of the time schedule is reserved for formulating concrete guidelines that will help researchers and designers to streamline their activities and ‘standardize’ methodological practices. This full-day workshop has a creative, generative character. It will refrain from using a standard workshop setup of presentations and discussions. Sharing best practices, brainstorms and formulating guidelines in interactive group sessions will be at the core of all activities. Who should attend? Researchers and designers working on (a) design-oriented project(s) involving people with cognitive or sensory impairments are invited to participate. Especially those who have adjusted existing participatory design techniques to such users are encouraged to apply. Application People can apply by filling in one or more workshop cards (available from the workshop’s website <http://pdwithimpairmentschi2014.wordpress.com/>), describing their target group and a technique they used. In addition, applicants write a one-pager about their expectations of the workshop. At least one author of each accepted submission must attend the workshop. All participants must register for the workshop and for at least one day of the conference. Important dates - January 17: application deadline - February 10: notification of acceptance - April 26: workshop date Further information & contact Please visit our workshop website<http://pdwithimpairmentschi2014.wordpress.com/>for the workshop's programme and to apply for the workshop.. For more information and questions, please contact Karin Slegers: karin.slegers(a)soc.kuleuven.be We hope to see you in Toronto in April!

Adverbal form of mobile?
by Rich Ling 07 Jan '14

07 Jan '14

Dear all, What is the adverbial form of mobile? The specific sentence I am trying to forge is "The network consisted of individual persons as nodes with mobially [sic.] mediated links connecting them." It might be that I can reformulate the sentence, but that still does not solve the problem of the adverbial form issue. I have tried mobally, mobily, etc, but nothing seems right. Further there is not much guidance on the internet. Thanks for any help. -- Rich L.
