Apologies for cross-posting --- Final Call for Papers: The 13th biennial Participatory Design Conference (PDC) in Windhoek, Namibia. (6. – 10. October 2014) www.pdc2014.org Join us in Windhoek, Namibia in 2014 to celebrate the 13th Participatory Design Conference (PDC). The conference theme of the PDC 2014 is “Reflecting connectedness”. We are currently experiencing a technologically pushed trend in ‘being always connected’. This is manifested in a number of designed artifacts, such as smart-phones, social networks, computer supported cooperative work and distributed working tools. By ‘reflecting connectedness’ in PD, we acknowledge influential relations across continents, societies, people, disciplines and time, beyond the direct involvement of stakeholders. While PD has evolved as a discipline on its own, we should continuously reflect on interrelations of theories and practices within and across the field and thereby enriching PD within a wider context. We must further engage in critical debates of what it means to design within and for a multilayered network, such as the on-line world versus off-line interactions, the blurring distinction of designers and users, researchers and artists, design and research ‘in the wild’, designing for social justice, inclusiveness, and sustainability. We invite authors to deliberate on these relations within and beyond the field of PD, which affect its conceptualization and practices all over. The 2014 PDC seeks to attract submissions from different disciplines, academics, practitioners and artists in form of tutorials, workshops, doctorial consortiums, participatory art encounters, papers, and industry cases. Important dates: Conference dates: 6. – 10. October 2014 Full papers 28 February 2014 Short papers 10 March 2014 Workshop proposals 10 March 2014 Tutorials 10 March 2014 Doctorial Consortium 10 March 2014 Industry Cases 10 March 2014 pArt Installations 10 March 2014 Nomination to the Artful Integrators Award 10 March 2014 Acceptance Notification 13 June 2014 PDC’14 invites submissions in the following categories: Research papers: (full papers - maximum 10 pages). Research papers should report on original research which advances Participatory Design (PD) and reflect on state of the art themes in our field. As a single track conference, and the only one exclusively dedicated to PD, PDC Research papers have a broad impact on the development of PD theory, approaches and practices. Research papers will be published in the ACM International Conference series. Each submitted paper will be double blind reviewed by at least 3 reviewers. Each submission will be managed by a meta-reviewer to ensure that feedback is relevant, the learning experience significant and the process fair. Please make sure your submission is correctly anonymized. Accepted papers should be revised according to the review reports and the language should be checked by a native English speaker. Short papers: (short papers – maximum 4 pages). Short papers should present original, unpublished ideas and research that advances the field of Participatory Design (PD) and reflect on its potential future developments. As discussed in parallel, thematic sessions, PDC Short Papers can benefit from a clear scope and are expected to contribute to the emergence of new possibilities for PD. Compared to Research Papers, Short Papers may offer a more limited discussion of related work, or they may, for example, provide a novel design, method or theoretical concepts, without a full evaluation or with less detailed explanation. Short Papers are reviewed to the same standard of scientific quality as Research Papers, but the contribution is more focused and clear-cut. Each submitted short paper will be double blind reviewed by at least 3 reviewers. Please make sure submissions are anonymous. Accepted papers should be revised according to the review reports and the language should be checked by a native English speaker. Interactive Workshops: (maximum 2 pages) The workshop proposal should describe half day or full day sessions on topics that include methods, practices, and other areas of interest related to Participatory Design (PD). They should support an interactive format wherein active participation is possible, beyond a presentation format. These formats could include a mapping of a problem definition, small discussion groups, etc. The proposal must be written in a format that can be used for recruitment via the web. It should justify the need for the workshop and should contain a title, goals, format, method or technique, its relevance to PD and a schedule. Intended participants and how they will be recruited should also be described. In the recruitment procedure important dates should be clearly communicated to the participants (see timing). Also, it should be clear to the organizers and the participants what the maximum amount of participants is for the workshop and what the workshop duration is (half day or full day). Finally, the workshop proposal should include a clear statement about the expected outcomes of the workshop (e.g. journal publication, research proposal, exhibition, etc.). Tutorials: (2 page proposal) Half day and full day sessions for teaching conceptual frameworks, methods/techniques, and novel approaches in Participatory Design (PD). The proposal should contain a title, goals, method or technique, relevance to PD and a schedule. Please describe in the proposal any handouts that you intend to make available. Industry Cases: (2-4 page case description) should report on the use of participatory methods, tools, and/or practices within commercial, non-profit, or governmental organizations. We are interested in a broad range of submissions that explore what a participatory approach means to different practitioners and audiences and may include ideas, approaches, projects, experimentations or reflections on participation. We encourage submissions from practitioners who might not ordinarily attend the Participatory Design (PD) conference but who are grappling with the complexities of participation or who are experimenting with novel approaches. Cases should highlight the benefits, challenges, and outcomes from the application of participatory approaches and should provide concrete lessons for others who are interested in applying PD in their organizations. Each submitted case will be peer reviewed for applicability to the PD community. Doctoral consortium: (4 page proposal) The doctoral consortium is a full-day session intended for PhD students working within the field of Participatory Design (PD). It will provide students with an opportunity to discuss issues of concern to them in their studies and receive extensive feedback from the session co-chairs and other student participants. Enrolment is limited and selection will be based on the quality of application submissions, taking into account how the research is related to PD. The aim will be to include a spread of students with different disciplinary emphases, at different stages of study, and coming from different cultural backgrounds. The proposal should give an overview of the PhD project, including research motivations, questions, methods, status of current work, major findings and plans for further research. Accepted applicants will be asked to provide a revised and elaborated research summary (4 pages), and to participate in some pre-workshop on-line discussions. Art installations: (2 page proposal) Interdisciplinary collaborations have often yielded surprising yet astonishing results, leading both research and knowledge to new heights. PDC has a long history of incorporating participatory art installations to inspire and innovate. Artists and designers working with any form of interactive participatory methods are invited to submit their projects. The works can take inspiration from visual and digital media, performance arts, installations, communication technologies, touch, sound and any other genres that allow participants to take part or become part of the art piece. Projects should address/explore the theme ‘reflecting connectedness’. Please submit a 2 page proposal of the art work, in which the project is described (incl. sketch/design), the relation to PD, and specific requirements for display. Alternatively artists can submit audio or video files describing the project. The Artful Integrators’ Award: We welcome nominations for the sixth Artful Integrators’ Award, to be presented at PDC 14 in Namibia. The Award is intended to recognize outstanding achievement in the area of participatory design of information and communications technologies. Where traditional design awards have gone to individual designers and/or singular objects, the Artful Integrator’s Award emphasizes the importance of collaborative participation in design, and a view of good design as the effective alignment of diverse collections of people, practices and artefacts. Submission and formatting guidelines The submissions in all categories are subject to double-blind peer review. For previous PDC conferences, the acceptance rate for research papers has been about 25% and for the other submission categories about 50%.All submissions should follow thePDC paper template to be found on the conference website (www.pdc2014.org) The PDC 2014 proceedings will be published as part of the International Conference Proceedings Series published by ACM and available online from the ACM Digital Library. Accepted research papers will comprise Volume I of the Proceedings of the 13th Participatory Design Conference. Volume II of the proceedings will comprise the accepted papers in the other submission categories. Authors of accepted papers will need to complete the ACM copyright form as a condition of inclusion in the proceedings.Only PDF files (.pdf) may be submitted and submissions are only accepted through the PDC conference management system. Heike Winschiers-Theophilus, Vincenzo D'Andrea & Ole Sejer Iversen PDC’14 chairs.

CfP Media Futures EASA MAN network
by Elisenda Ardèvol 16 Jan '14

Hi, We would like to invite you to send papers proposal to our panel on: Media futures: media anthropology of, for and through the notion of 'future' at the EASA2014: Collaboration, Intimacy & Revolution to be held in Tallinn University, Estonia, 31st July - 3rd August, 2014 This panel examines the implications of a 'futures turn' and how might an anthropology of media (including design, content, materialities, spaces and practices) enable us to understand how futures are imagined, made, hoped for, contested and lived cross-culturally and in the present and recent past. A new wave of critical future-focused scholarship has recently emerged across the social sciences and humanities. This field of research, which encompasses anthropology (Collins 2007), has developed in design anthropology (Gunn and Donovan 2012), in the sociology of expectations (Brown and Michael 2003) and through anticipatory practices in geography (Anderson 2010). Media anthropology has intensively explored social change and cultural transformations (Postill, Ardevol and Tenhunen forthcoming), but little attention has been paid to how media are implicated in the ways futures are imagined, projected, predicted or contested. Media, especially in its relationship with digital technologies, are nowadays at the core of most meaningful social transformations, creative and innovation processes. Digital media encompasses new models of social intervention, citizenship, public engagement and knowledge production based on collaboration and sharing, as well as new models of social control and surveillance (Coleman 2010). Which media futures are in dispute? Which futures are embedded in digital media content, design and practices? How are images of the future interwoven with media regarding space, materiality, the sensory, sociality and intimacy? How do media futures change over time and cross-culturally? This Media Anthropology Network panel works in collaboration with the Anthropology at the edge of the future EASA Lab, proposed by Sarah Pink, Juan Salazar, Andrew Irving and Johannes Sjoberg. Convenors Elisenda Ardèvol (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya) Débora Lanzeni (IN3/ UOC) Philipp Budka (University of Vienna) Discussant: Juan Salazar (UWS) The call for papers is now open, closing on 27th Feburary Send papers proposal via: http://www.nomadit.co.uk/easa/easa2014/panels.php5?PanelID=3070 -- Elisenda Ardevol Estudis d'Arts i Humanitats Universitat Oberta de Catalunya http://mediacciones.es

IWT SPION-Workshop: Privacy and Responsibilisation in Online Social Networks
by Seda Gurses 16 Jan '14

16 Jan '14

sorry for cross-posting. this workshop is coming up and may be of interest for those of you who are close to brussels (also for the cpdp conference). best, s. IWT SPION-Workshop: Privacy and Responsibilisation in Online Social Networks Speakers: David Barnard-Wills, Rula Sayaf, Laura Brandimarte, Bo Gao, Ero Balsa One of the main goals of the SPION project is to investigate ways of mitigating the responsibilisation of individuals for existing privacy risks on online social networks. As it is accustomed in SPION, the participants of this workshop will explore and discuss responsibilisation from different interdisciplinary angles and perspectives. We will explore how governments and companies push responsibilities onto individuals by externalizing online privacy risks. We will further explore the reasons behind processes of responsibilisation and the strategies employed to do this. We will present several user studies which explore the adequacy and efficacy of popular privacy tools, such as increased transparency and privacy preserving tools, and discus the role they may play in responsibilisation of individuals with respect to their privacy. Other topics that we will cover include the ethical issues that inform current access control models in online social networks, as well as the use of cryptography and feedback and awareness tools to help users protect their privacy online. Speakers from within and without SPION will present these issues and try to provide answers to them, and we look forward to the audience's input for taking the discussion further! You can find more info at http://www.spion.me/cosicWorkshop/ By registering, you will ensure you get a name badge and food. Please spread this invitation also to others in your networks who may be interested in attending! Looking forward to seeing you there Ero Balsa, Claudia Diaz and Stefaan Seys.

Seeking research on use of privacy and security tools
by gus andrews 15 Jan '14

15 Jan '14

I'm working at the Open Internet Tools Project, starting a track on Secure User Practices -- both studying how users understand their privacy, anonymity, and security online, and developing better teaching materials to help everyone protect their privacy and security. I'm specifically interested in learning more about user practices on the ground, especially in non-Western cultures, which impact their privacy and security. If anyone has references on the topic, could you please send them along to me off-list? (I'll digest the list once it's done and post it here.) Thanks! 14 Jan '14

*Call for Submissions* *Issue 6 of **The Journal of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy*<http://cuny.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=2d55d162acd43cdb3525dd014&id=…> * (JITP)* *Special Issue: * *Intersections: Heritage, Development, Digital Technologies, and Pedagogy in Africa and the African Diaspora* JITP Co-Editors: Stephen Brier and Kiersten Greene Guest Co-Editors: Marla L. Jaksch, Ph.D. and Angel David Nieves, Ph.D. *Abstract * *JITP* welcomes work that explores critical and creative uses of interactive technology in teaching, learning, and research. For Issue 6, we are seeking submissions under the theme of “Intersections of Heritage, Development, Digital Technologies, & Pedagogy in Africa & the African Diaspora.” Recent scholarship in development studies has highlighted the importance of new digital technologies as tools for furthering social justice while at the same time revealing continued economic and educational inequalities. How are information communication technologies (ICTs) being used, challenged, implemented, and incorporated in grassroots and institutional heritage development in Africa and in the Diaspora? We are especially interested in the ways that heritage education, policy and pedagogy intersect in the arts, in the classroom, in the community, in cyberworlds/spaces, and/or in academic and action research. Submissions should explore the teaching, policy, and/or research impact of digital media—e.g. application software, social media, virtual environments, audio or visual media, and the Internet—on heritage, historic and cultural conservation, and development in Africa and/or in the Diaspora. Submitters are encouraged to address research and/or teaching and learning questions through inter-, multi-, and/or trans-disciplinary approaches in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences and to include any kind of multimedia element(s) in what they submit. *Possible topics for submissions could include (but are not limited to)*: - Teaching digital and virtual heritage as a subject - Distance learning - Digital texts and editions - Mapping software/spatial Humanities - Collaboration (Community, across academic disciplines, etc.) - Virtual worlds/reconstructions, e.g., Edward Gonzalez-Tennant’s digital history of Rosewood, Florida (http://www.virtualrosewood.com/<http://cuny.us7.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=2d55d162acd43cdb3525dd014&id…> ) - Digital storytelling - Unintended consequences of using digital media - Authorial/ownership issues - Creative Commons licensing - Ethics and digital media - Access issues / “digital divides” - Social media/social networking - Technologies of colonialism - Email and the historical record - Mobile technologies (cell/Smart phones, PDAs), e.g., *MAMA mobi* ( http://askmama.mobi/<http://cuny.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=2d55d162acd43cdb3525dd014&id=…>), a South African mobile app on maternal and child health - Cyberculture(s) and Race - Politics of knowledge; new knowledge production - Globalization and digital media - Portability of learning materials - Class/race/gender/nation and digital media - Digital media and the arts - Personal vulnerabilities/exposures in the digital world - Creating digital media - Immediacy/ubiquity of information - Disciplinary shifts In addition to traditional long-form articles, we invite submissions of audio or visual presentations; aural/video interviews, dialogues, or conversations; creative/artistic works; manifestos and jeremiads; or other scholarly materials. All submissions are subject to an open review process. Manuscripts should be less than 8,000 words, though editors will consider longer pieces on a case-by-case basis. Submissions received that do not fall under the specific theme of Issue 6 but do fall under the broader themes that *JITP* features will be considered for publication in a future issue. *Important Dates* The submission deadline for the Fall 2014 issue is April 20, 2014. When submitting using our Open Journal Systems software, under “Journal Section,” please select the section titled “Issue 6: Special Issue.” Submission instructions are below. *About the Journal* All work appearing in the Issues section of *JITP* is reviewed by the issue editors and independently by two scholars in the field, who provide formative feedback to the author(s) during the review process. We intend that the journal itself—both in our process and in our digital product—serve as an opportunity to reveal, reflect on, and revise academic publication and classroom practices. All submissions for this special issue will be considered for our “Behind the Seams” feature, in which we publish dynamic representations of the revision and editorial processes, including reflections from the authorial and editorial participants. Research-based submissions should include discussions of approach, method, and analysis. When possible, research data should be made publicly available and accessible via the Web and/or other digital mechanisms, a process that JITP can and will support as necessary. Successes and interesting failures are equally welcome (although see the Teaching Fails section below for an alternative outlet). Submissions that focus on pedagogy should balance theoretical frameworks with practical considerations of how new technologies play out in both formal and informal educational settings. Discipline-specific submissions should be written for non-specialists. As a courtesy to our reviewers, we will not consider simultaneous submissions, but we will do our best to reply to you within two to three months of the submission deadline. All work should be original and previously unpublished. Essays or presentations posted on a personal blog may be accepted, provided they are substantially revised; please contact us with any questions at editors(a)jitpedagogy.org For submission guidelines please visit: http://jitp.commons.gc.cuny.edu/submit/#how-to-submit<http://cuny.us7.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=2d55d162acd43cdb3525dd014&id…> The mission of *The Journal of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy* (ISSN 2166-6245) is to promote open scholarly discourse around critical and creative uses of digital technology in teaching, learning, and research. Educational institutions have often embraced instrumentalist conceptions and market-driven implementations of technology that over determine its uses in academic environments. Such approaches underestimate the need for critical engagement with the integration of technological tools into pedagogical practice. The JITP will endeavor to counter these trends by re-centering questions of pedagogy in our discussions of technology in higher education. The journal will also work to change what counts as scholarship—and how it is presented, disseminated, and reviewed—by allowing contributors to develop their ideas, publish their work, and engage their readers using multiple formats. We are committed first and foremost to teaching and learning, and intend that the journal itself—both in process and in product—provide opportunities to reveal, reflect on, and revise academic publication and classroom practice. -- kierstengreene.net brookerhollow.com

Reminder: CfP - CHI 2014 Workshop on Technology Non-use: Refusing, Limiting, Departing
by Eric P. S. Baumer 14 Jan '14

14 Jan '14

*** Deadline Friday, January 17 *** ==================================================================== Refusing, Limiting, Departing: Why We Should Study Technology Non-use Workshop at ACM CHI Conference Saturday, April 26, 2014 Toronto, ON, Canada http://nonuse.jedbrubaker.com/ ==================================================================== Most research in human-centered/social computing focuses on when and how people use technology. We argue that examining non-use – when and how people do not use technology – is an equally informative line of inquiry. This workshop will consider the theories, methods, foundational texts, and central research questions in the study of non-use. In addition to a special issue proposal, we expect the research thread brought to the fore in this workshop will speak to foundational questions of use and the user in HCI. The workshop will center on discussion and agenda-setting around four guiding foci: - discussing theoretical grounding - identifying methodological approaches - creating a living bibliography - crafting a research agenda. The outcomes of these discussions will be used as the basis for proposing a special issue of a journal on non-use as an important theoretical concern. We request that participants submit 2-4 page position papers in the HCI Archive format that describe how non-use relates to their research, with an eye toward a longer piece that could be included in a special issue. Papers should include at least one suggestion for the living bibliography and speak to at least one of the guiding foci (theories, methods, or research agenda) of the author’s choosing. Papers will be accepted based on originality, quality, and how well they represent a range of disciplinary perspectives. Submissions from outside the HCI community (e.g., science and technology studies, the humanities, sociology, and others) are strongly encouraged. We will ask workshop attendees to engage in a week of reflexive technology non-use to inform workshop discussion sessions. Limited support is available to defray costs for students and junior academics who are at the periphery of or outside the CHI community. Please contact the organizers for further information. Papers may be submitted via email to: nonuse2014(a)gmail.dot.com Important Dates: - Submission Deadline - January 17, 2014 - Notification of Acceptance - February 10, 2014 - Workshop at CHI - April 26, 2014 Organizers: Eric P. Call for participation – PhD Course: Citizenship in the Digital Republic 2014
by Christina Neumayer 14 Jan '14

14 Jan '14

Apologies for cross-posting. Citizenship in the Digital Republic 2014: Mundane counter publics in the digital age March 12-14, 2014, at the IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark Lecturers: Prof. Klaus Bruhn Jensen, Copenhagen University; Prof. Peter Dahlgren, Lund University, Prof. Maria Bakardjieva, University of Calgary, Associate Prof. Bjarki Valtysson, Copenhagen University; Associate Prof. Lisbeth Klastrup, IT University of Copenhagen; Assistant Prof. Jun Liu, Copenhagen University; Christina Neumayer, Postdoctoral Fellow, IT University of Copenhagen. Organisation: Christina Neumayer, Maria Bakardjieva Dates of the course: March 12-14, 2014 Course description: This course is the second edition of the ‘Citizenship in the Digital Republic’ course with a focus on ‘Mundane counter-publics in the digital age’. Citizenship, broadly defined, includes any form of democratic participation in social systems – political, technological and expert. The digital republic, for its part, is understood as a political community where the governance of the people is performed by creative utilization of communication networks. How is such governance realized and how can it advance participatory democracy? What opportunities for involvement do citizens have in a densely mediated polis? Can technological development itself be democratically steered? The goal of the course is to critically explore the new forms of democratic participation that the pervasive presence of digital media in contemporary societies affords and requires. The course aims at attracting and giving a forum to students whose interests focus on participatory forms of design, political and civic engagement, counter-publics and social movements, technological politics, regulation and education. The themes comprising the course take up the concept of citizenship and counter-publics in four distinct contexts: * first theme: counter publics in the digital age * second theme: civic activism, participation, and digital media * third theme: mundane citizenship, digital media, and everyday life * fourth theme: co-creation and participation in policy development and technology design Counter publics in the digital age The focus of the first theme is on counter publics in a society characterized by the thorough penetration of digital information and communication technologies (ICTs). Counter publics refer to the individuals or groups marginalized or excluded from the mainstream public sphere who contest, negotiate, and struggle against the hegemonic discourse, form spaces of political opposition, or establish alternative forms of community and identity. With the growing presence of digital technologies in all areas of social life, the internet, mobile phones, and social media are transforming the way people express themselves, interact with each other, engage or form communities, and perceive the world. How are digital communication technologies generating and facilitating opportunities that allow for the establishment of alternative political and cultural identities and communities that define themselves in opposition to established norms? What are the characteristics of the counter-publics in the digital age and how do they differ from those of the past? Civic activism, participation, and digital media The second theme will look at the uptake and appropriation of digital media technologies for the purposes of civic action and political participation. It will review the advances made by social movements and civic activists in rallying support and making an impact on political life and the political establishment through the creative use of digital media. The new civic cultures emerging from these processes and their relation to digital technologies and uses will be examined. This theme includes notions of media practices, media-based agency, web journalism and civic cosmopolitanism, which are according to Dahlgren essential elements of civic cultures in the digital age. Mundane citizenship, digital media, and everyday life The third theme will be centred on the notion of ‘mundane citizenship’ and ‘mundane counter-publics’. So far a relatively large amount of research is devoted exclusively to use of new media in particular moments of alternative or antagonistic mobilization, failing to associate these specific uses with a larger living context—the mundane, everyday experiences of new media users. In particular, current approaches largely neglect the power dynamics in the mundane use of new media technologies. Consequently, the heavy emphasis on the role of new media in specific eruptions of contentious politics overlooks the cumulative changes in civic agency associated with the mundane use of new media. Accounts narrowly focused on specific events fail to capture, reflect, and assess the political potential embedded in the new practices of civic engagement furnished by new media (e.g., "subactivism") that are submerged in everyday life. Co-creation and participation in policy development and technology design The fourth theme takes the notion of citizenship to the terrain of cultural and educational institutions, and cultural practices. It discusses the liberating and repressive forces at play in the way users co-produce culture online both within and outside formal cultural spheres. Co-creation and participation became buzzwords in policy development, technology design and use of digital media, in particular the so-called ‘social web’. Despite the creative potential and the possibility for engagement, a critical perspective on these developments also needs to take unintended consequences such as privacy issues, surveillance and limitations for the development of counter-publics and cultural practices into account. By looking beyond “eye-grabbing” events (e.g., revolutionary moments), this course probes into the political implication of mundane use of new media in people’s everyday life. Addressing mundane use of new media in people’s everyday experience will help us to understand the cumulative effects of new media and their gradual evolution, but also shed light on the deeper impact of digital communication technologies on social and political changes both today and in the years to come. How to sign up: Sign up by sending an e-mail to Christina Neumayer (chne[at]itu.dk<http://itu.dk/>). All students must submit with their application to the course a short abstract of their work as it relates to the course (not more than 500 words). Applications should be submitted by January 27, 2014. Enrolment is limited to 20 participants. Please find more information about ECTS, etc. here: https://learnit2.itu.dk/course/view.php?id=1974436 and at the PhD school website<https://www.itu.dk/en/Forskning/Phd-uddannelsen/PhD-Courses/~/link.aspx?_id…> of the IT University of Copenhagen.
