[Apologies for cross posting] Biological Rhythms and Technology http://pac.cs.cornell.edu/rhythms/ Workshop at CHI 2014 Toronto, Canada, April 27th 9.00am – 6.00pm We are constantly changing. Every week. Every day. Every minute. Our bodies coordinate many physiological and mental changes to help us adapt to our environment. As a consequence of these fluctuations, we can be more suited to certain types of activities at specific times of the day. Disruptions of our rhythms can have serious impacts on our sleep, productivity, and well-being. In spite of these natural fluctuations, the technologies we use to work and to communicate respond identically throughout the day to our interactions. However, a new class of technologies has emerged that takes our biological rhythms into account. This interactive workshop will bring together researchers interested in designing technologies to support biological rhythms. We invite participants from a range of disciplines (including sleep, well-being, and mental health) to take part in this workshop to discuss the design and development of technology to support individual rhythms; social impacts of measuring these physiological, behavioral, and mental changes; and feedback interventions to help people become more aware of these changes. The goal of the workshop is to create a community around incorporating an awareness of biological rhythms into the design of technology How to participate Submit a 2-4 page paper in the ACM Extended Abstract format about your ongoing work, recent results, or study methods related to biological rhythms. At least one author of each accepted papers must attend the workshop and all participants much register for the workshop and attend at least one day of the conference. Call for Papers -1984: Freedom and Censorship in the Media - Where Are We Now? [Reopened due to relocation]

Please circulate and distribute widely: *1984: FREEDOM AND CENSORSHIP IN THE MEDIA – WHERE ARE WE NOW?* *University of Sunderland – London Campus (23rd-24th April 2014)* In response to an overwhelming international interest from academics, we have decided to relocate the conference to the University of Sunderland’s *London* Campus. The conference will now take place on the *23rd and 24th of April 2014*. In light the change in venue and dates, we are reopening the call for papers. The new deadline for the submission of abstracts is January 17th 2014. The conference aims to examine censorship both nationally and internationally and in all forms of media. Selected papers will be published with a leading UK publisher in a forthcoming edited collection based on the event. *Confirmed keynote speakers* Professor Martin Barker, University of East Anglia Jerry Barnett, SexAndCensorship.org Professor Julian Petley, Brunel University Professor Clarissa Smith, University of Sunderland In 2013 has raised concerns about new censorship measures. Jerry Barnett has referred to it as ‘Internet Censorship 1.0’, It seems that 2014 is not so far away from 1984 in terms of the social and political struggles for the control of the media landscape. Censorship is still the currency of the contemporary political discourse. Worries over effects of media content and technologies are never far from the headlines. When anxieties centre on protecting children and the fortification of the social fabric, regulation often seems like the first resort. The year 2014 will see the thirtieth anniversary of the 1984 Video Recordings Act (VRA): this event offers the opportunity to reflect on how and why concerns about individual media technologies and particular media genres become so important that campaigners and politicians can claim that ‘the very soul of the nation’ is at stake. Using the VRA as a starting point, this conference aims to critically examine the key issues in politics and campaigning which shape calls for censorship. If new technologies always spark old anxieties around ‘effects’ and propensities to cause ‘harm’, what might we learn from extant legislation and their implementation? As we settle into the internet age and media on demand, policing national media borders seems ever more futile, yet the clamour for legislation to protect children and society shows no signs of abating. We invite submissions that explore issues relating to censorship which may be specific to the history, implementation and legacies of the Video Recordings Act but we also welcome papers which examine media regulation/censorship in contemporaneous issues and their historical antecedents. Their broader cultural contexts, which are national and international in focus and which draw connections between Suggested topics: Censorship Evolving practices and technologies of media classification and/or censorship ‘Problematic’ media cultures Regulation of representations of sex, gender and sexualities Digital and online censorship Oppositional voices Protecting and questioning national borders Campaigns and campaigners Activism/activists and the political arena International narratives of censorship British regulation in a global context National and international regulation/censorship Documentary and avant-garde Controversies around computer games History of contemporary film censorship/classification Audiences and the social experiences of censorship Censorship and the creation of communities of dissent Regulations and government policy Proposals for individual papers or pre-constituted panels are welcomed. The submission deadline is 17th January 2014 and notifications of acceptance will be made by the 31st January 2014. Proposals should include title, abstract (350 words), 3-5 key bibliographical references, along with the name of the presenter, institutional affiliation and biographical information (100 words), and email. Panel organizers are asked to submit panel proposals including a panel title, a short description of the panel and information on all the papers following the guidelines listed above. Panels may consist of three speakers with a maximum of 20 minutes speaking time each. Millions of people around the world start their day with videos of kittens, puppies and meerkats. Recent years have seen the rise of global animal brands, such as Maru and Grumpy Cat, along with new talent agencies for this purpose. Online portal I Can Haz Cheezburger has received millions of dollars in venture capital funding, becoming a diversified media business in its own right. YouTube channels, Twitter hashtags and blog rolls form an infrastructure across which a vast amount of cute-themed user-generated content, as well as an increasing amount of commercially produced and branded material, now circulates. Cute content can also be understood as an aesthetic tradition. Tracing the history of animal imagery leads us to a range of practices - kitsch portraiture, stock photography, greeting card imagery - as well as newer online spaces, such as the 4chan message boards, which have resignified the captioned cat pic as a geek subcultural practice. Approaching cute content as a sphere of contemporary cultural production raises a number of questions for analysis. How can we contextualise digital cute content within a longer history of mediated human-animal interactions? What is the nature of animal celebrity and stardom? What textual forms does online cute imagery take in different national and regional contexts? This issue of M/C Journal invites contributions interested in exploring 'cute' as a mode of textual production and as a sector of the Internet economy. On the one hand is a strong desire to be open and inclusive of all available data and reports, while on the other hand there is a thought that we should review and exclude suspect or biased work. We do not have the resources to perform such extensive review on each linked item (as of today there are over 200 in the database), and I believe that it would be difficult to determine the criteria for excluding work in any case. However, in order to be of most use as a public resource, it would be useful to provide information that could help all of us make decisions about what data and reports to use. As a result, we are considering including a review section, such as used in Amazon, to rate and provide comments from all, including hopefully the authors. For starters, there are two feedback sections, one to send me comments on specific reports, and the other to provide suggestions for work that has not yet been included. Thoughts on how to move this forward would be most appreciated. Jennifer, Sounds like a great opportunity to introduce emerging researchers to a wide range of methods. On the qualitative side, you might consider exploring methods for collecting elicited data from interviews as well as extant data from posts, archives and documents. Online communications tools allow for many ways to interact with participants through text, verbal and/or visual exchanges. By building interview exercises into your course, students can practice collecting (and analyzing) data.
