Extended deadline: CHI14 Workshop: Biological Rhythms and Technology
by Jaime Snyder 21 Jan '14

21 Jan '14

[Apologies for cross posting] The deadline for submissions has been extended to this Friday, January 24th. =================================== Biological Rhythms and Technology http://pac.cs.cornell.edu/rhythms/ Workshop at CHI 2014 Toronto, Canada, April 27th 9.00am – 6.00pm We are constantly changing. Every week. Every day. Every minute. Our bodies coordinate many physiological and mental changes to help us adapt to our environment. As a consequence of these fluctuations, we can be more suited to certain types of activities at specific times of the day. Disruptions of our rhythms can have serious impacts on our sleep, productivity, and well-being. In spite of these natural fluctuations, the technologies we use to work and to communicate respond identically throughout the day to our interactions. However, a new class of technologies has emerged that takes our biological rhythms into account. This interactive workshop will bring together researchers interested in designing technologies to support biological rhythms. We invite participants from a range of disciplines (including sleep, well-being, and mental health) to take part in this workshop to discuss the design and development of technology to support individual rhythms; social impacts of measuring these physiological, behavioral, and mental changes; and feedback interventions to help people become more aware of these changes. The goal of the workshop is to create a community around incorporating an awareness of biological rhythms into the design of technology How to participate Submit a 2-4 page paper in the ACM Extended Abstract format about your ongoing work, recent results, or study methods related to biological rhythms. At least one author of each accepted papers must attend the workshop and all participants much register for the workshop and attend at least one day of the conference. Important dates • Submission Deadline: 24 Jan 2014 • Notification: 10 Feb 2014 • Workshop date: 27 April 2014 For more info: http://pac.cs.cornell.edu/rhythms/ Organizers Mark Matthews, Cornell University, USA
Erin Carroll, University of Rochester, USA
 Saeed Abdullah, Cornell University, USA
 Jaime Snyder, Cornell University, USA
Matthew Kay, University of Washington, USA
 Tanzeem Choudhury, Cornell University, USA
 Geri Gay, Cornell University, USA
Julie Kientz, University of Washington, USA

New BA Digital Culture at King's College London
by Jordan, Timothy 21 Jan '14

21 Jan '14

Dear all, I hope this will be of interest to a few of you as another part of developing research and teaching on the internet and the digital. We're launching a single honours undergrad degree BA Digital Culture in London, recruiting now but first intake in September 2015. We are aiming at a non-programming course that focuses on cultural and social analysis of the effects of the internet and the digital. There'll be some chances for 'hands on' stuff, including digital methods, but the primary focus is the kinds of cultures we research. The syllabus etc. is here: : www.kcl.ac.uk/artshums/depts/ddh/study/ug/digitalculture.aspx As a related issue, I wonder if there'd be any interest in a mailing list or group focused on developing AOIR's mission toward UG and PG teaching? CFP: special Issue Philosophy & Technology on The Ethics of Cyber Conflicts
by Mariariosaria Taddeo 21 Jan '14

21 Jan '14

Apologies for cross posting Call for Papers for Philosophy and Technology’s special issue on The Ethics of Cyber Conflicts GUEST EDITORS Ludovica Glorioso (NATO Cooperative Cyber Defense Centre of Excellence) INTRODUCTION In the age of the so-called information revolution, the ability to control, disrupt or manipulate the enemy’s information infrastructure has become as decisive as weapon superiority with respect to determining the outcome of conflicts. So much so that the Pentagon defines cyberspace as a new domain in which war is waged, alongside land, sea, air and space. Cyber conflicts, as part of a state’s defensive or offensive strategy, are a fast growing phenomenon, which is rapidly changing the dynamics of combat as well as the role that warfare plays in political negotiations and the life of civil societies. Such changes are not the exclusive concern of the military. They also have a significant bearing on ethicists and policymakers, since existing ethical theories of war, together with national and international regulations, struggle to address the novelties of this phenomenon. The issue could not be more pressing and there is a much felt and fast escalating need to share information and coordinate ethical theorising about cyber conflicts. This special issue of Springer’s Philosophy & Technology (http://www.springer.com/13347) follows the organization of the international workshop on Ethics of Cyber Conflict (http://www.ccdcoe.org/428.html) held on November 21-22, 2013 at the Centro Alti Studi per la Difesa (CASD) with the support of the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defense Centre of Excellence. TOPICS We solicit the submission of papers that investigate issues concerning the way ICTs are affecting our ethical views of conflicts and warfare, as well as the analysis of just-war principles in the light of the dissemination of cyber conflicts; humanitarian military interventions based on ICTs; whether preventive acts of cyber war may satisfy jus-ad-bellum criteria; challenges of upholding jus-in-bello standards in cyber warfare, especially in asymmetric conflicts; attribution and proportionality of the response to cyber attacks; moral permissibility of automated responses and ethical deployment of military robotic weapons. TIMETABLE April 1, 2014: Deadline papers submissions May 1, 2014: Deadline reviews papers June 1, 2014: Deadline revised papers 2015: Publication of the special issue SUBMISSION DETAILS To submit a paper for this special issue, authors should go to the journal’s Editorial Manager http://www.editorialmanager.com/phte/ The author (or a corresponding author for each submission in case of co- authored papers) must register into EM. The author must then select the special article type: "Special issue on The Ethics of Cyber Conflicts” from the selection provided in the submission process. This is needed in order to assign the submissions to the Guest Editors. Submissions will then be assessed according to the following procedure: New Submission => Journal Editorial Office => Guest Editor(s) => Reviewers => Reviewers’ Recommendations => Guest Editor(s)’ Recommendation => Editor-in-Chief’s Final Decision => Author Notification of the Decision. The process will be reiterated in case of requests for revisions. Ten Years of Facebook Conference

20 Jan '14

We invite you to submit your work to the Ten Years of Facebook: The Third Argumentor Conference *Ten Years of Facebook: The Third Argumentor Conference* 4-6 September 2014, Oradea / Nagyvárad, Romania This year marks the tenth anniversary of the launch of Facebook, the most ubiquitous social media and communication platform in the world. It also gives us the opportunity to take a step back and examine increasingly important questions about how Facebook and the new social web have impacted the world of communication, from debate, discourse and rhetoric to philosophy, politics, social context, and other forms of new media. Has Facebook been constructive or disruptive in these different areas - or perhaps both? How does the ease and ubiquity of online communication affect longstanding national, generational, ideological, gender and class divides? We welcome papers seeking to explore such questions, including approaches that aim to challenge the importance, relevance or timeliness of such questions. ORGANIZED BY: Partium Christian University / Romania Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania / Romania University of Debrecen / Hungary Conference website: https://sites.google.com/site/argumentor2014/ Abstract submission deadline: 3 February 2014 Laszlo Ropolyi

Networking meet up 21-23h at the C3 BAR (CCCB). How does value works in the emerging organizational forms? What conditions favor the collaborative production? What distinguishes the commons from the traditional hierarchical and commercial organizations? Discussion and presentation of the European action research project P2Pvalue "Techno-social platform for sustainable models and value generation in commons-based peer production in the Future Internet". @P2Pvalue #P2Pvalue Live streaming: www.p2pvalue.eu/streaming<http://www.p2pvalue.eu/streaming> Lloc: CCCB - Montalegre, 5 - 08001 Barcelona. Sala Auditori Event info: http://igopnet.cc/p2pvalue-barcelona/ The Common based peer production is an emerging and innovative production model in which the creative energy of large numbers of citizens supported by a digital platform takes place outside the parameters of the traditionally hierarchical and mercantil organization resulting in the public provision of commons resources. This is the case of projects such as Linux, Wikipedia, Open Street Map or SETI , etc.. Recently there has been an expansion to other areas of activity, such as citizen science, product design, management of common spaces and open data sources. The project P2Pvalue depart from an exercise of mapping the diffusion and hybridization of peer production, and investigates the conditions which favor the collaborative creation and the logic of value of these emerging forms. The research results will be used to develop a digital -platform based on decentralized architecture and the design of public policies that promote the commons. 18h Roundtable debate with international participants in the project, and a large representation of local experiences, in which the inspiring axes of the project will be discussed and presented the early reflections and tools generated. The session is open and free and is intended to be also an invitation to participate in the project and meeting up with local communities P2P. Paperback ISBN 9781446257319 Hardcover ISBN 9781446257302 More information: http://fuchs.uti.at/books/social-media-a-critical-introduction/ Now more than ever, we need to understand social media - the good as well as the bad. We need critical knowledge that helps us to navigate the controversies and contradictions of this complex digital media landscape. Only then can we make informed judgements about what's happening in our media world, and why. Showing the reader how to ask the right kinds of questions about social media, Christian Fuchs takes us on a journey across social media, delving deep into case studies on Google, Facebook, Twitter, WikiLeaks and Wikipedia. The result lays bare the structures and power relations at the heart of our media landscape. This book is the essential, critical guide for understanding social media and for all students of media studies and sociology. Readers will never look at social media the same way again.
