Deadline: 18 December 2013 Dear all, We would like to remind you that the 6th annual Digital Methods Winter School, Mini-conference as well as International Workshop and Data Sprint will take place 13-17 January 2014 at the University of Amsterdam. The Winter School this year is dedicated to online data analysis, and has as its workshop and data sprint theme the study of hate violence as well as extremism, using software tools for social media data collection and analysis. We are pleased that Wendy Chun, Professor of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University, will be joining us at the School, together with representatives of Human Rights Watch. For PhD candidates and scholars attending there is also an opportunity to present a paper, and/or be a respondent, during the mini-conference. (Presenting papers is not a requirement for participating in the Winter School.) Each paper is shortly introduced, and two respondents provide 5-7 minute responses followed by author’s retort and general Q&A. The Digital Methods Winter School provides the opportunity for PhD candidates, advanced MA students and motivated scholars to work on timely research methods as well as present a short paper on digital methods and new media related topics, with feedback from the Amsterdam group of DMI researchers and international participants, often drawn from previous Digital Methods Summer and Winter Schools. This year's Winter School is five days, with one day devoted to the Mini-conference, where the papers are presented and participants also serve as respondents, and four days to the workshop. The theme of the workshop is "methods of early warning," and includes a data sprint. This year's edition will feature, among other interventions, guest lectures by eminent scholars and practitioners. Participants do not have to present a paper to take part in the workshop. Digital Methods Winter School Workshop The 2014 Digital Methods Winter School is devoted to methods of early warning, detection and monitoring with social media data. Animal spirits in the stock market, the mood of the people before the elections, the buzz leading up to the Oscars. Emmys and Grammys - these are some of the common use cases, and for some analysts "data fantasies", put forward for deploying digital detection programs. Occasionally expressed as opportunities in big data, early warning systems and other societal monitoring devices using social media data are of interest as an alternative social research arena even competing with the more conventional social scientific instrumentarium. Google Flu Trends and Dengue Fever Trends signalled the use of engine queries to study incidence of ailment and its geography. The work using Twitter as anticipatory space has been less effective, perhaps summarised in the academic paper entitled, "I Wanted to Predict Elections with Twitter and all I got was this Lousy Paper." The 2014 Digital Methods Summer School takes stock but also applies software techniques to study resonance, salience as well as sentiment using online data. Where are the fruitful realms of application for such monitoring techniques? Are the techniques well suited to the comment and review spaces online? May we characterise hashtags as polemical, comical, highly substantive or nonsensical? How to geo-locate hate speech? Whilst disparate the list of questions seeks to invite application of monitoring software to wide-ranging online data sets, and experimentation. How to determine the spaces and derive metrics for unrest, collective nervousness, and other such constructions. May we derive signatures of affective states? Data Sprint: Hate Violence As Object of Online Study Traditionally, victim studies have relied on two main sources of data: police reports and self-reporting aka victimisation data. Another way to gather instances of hate violence is to conduct press monitoring. More recently, projects have attempted to crowd-source hate crime reports but without great success. This workshop aims to fill in the gaps of these traditional forms of gathering victimisation data by building an apparatus that uses Facebook and Twitter to monitor instances that may lead to hate violence. In doing so we ask: Is there a link between incitements of violence on social media and wider violence? How can we find social media hate activity measures that correlate with violence acts? Could social media give us early warning tool for hate violence? Extremist sympathiser networks, activists as well as victim spaces online will be monitored. An activity measure that will be explored on both Facebook and Twitter is the content (images, URLs, videos) that is most circulated and that animates particular groups. Another approach takes selected events at its core and investigates hate incitement activity around these events on social media retrospectively, and correlates these online activities with violent acts. Digital Methods Winter School Mini-Conference The data sprint is the Winter School workshop. There is also the annual Digital Methods Winter School Mini-Conference. The mini-conference provides the opportunity for digital methods and allied researchers to present short yet complete papers (5,000-7,500 words) and serve as respondents, providing feedback. Often the work presented follows from previous Digital Methods Summer Schools. The mini-conference accepts papers in the general digital methods and allied areas: the hyperlink and other natively digital objects, the website as archived object, web historiographies, search engine critique, Google as globalizing machine, cross-spherical analysis and other approaches to comparative media studies, device cultures, national web studies, Wikipedia as cultural reference, the technicity of (networked) content, post-demographics, platform studies, crawling and scraping, graphing and clouding, and similar. Hi again. Great and enlightening discussion! I would like to comment two points: First, I'm with Daren - why publish with the big companies after tenure? I confess I never understood the logic of the US academic environment, or even if and why the same rules and values apply in Europe, Canada, Asia, etc. It seems that Latin America is the only exception in a world where everybody runs the same tenure system (there are reasons to publish with the big business here as well, but I will not bore the majority describing what appears to be a strictly regional set of oddities). It seems that everyone aggrees that open access is better in that it makes our work available to a much larger group of readers. However, it is not so easy to locate good reliable open access journals that run a proper and well intentioned peer review system and that will not surprise us at the end of the reviewing process by charging a 'publication fee to cover the costs' (I know publishing have costs, I have been involved in all parts of the process, from scientific editor to support in the printing factory. Believe me, the fees are disproportionate). I remember having heard of a wiki listing open access journals with information about their reviewing practices, who is 'behind the curtains', etc. Does it exist? If not, I think it is time we start one. My second point is why we make our work available in Academia.edu. I would say it is because papers in Academia.edu get higher rankings from big bad giant Google (I suppose Academia.edu *is* Google. Is it?) Ranking higher means that more people get to read our work, as Academia.edu profits from it but does not charge the reader (or the author). I am not saying it is good or we can't do better - of course we can. I'm just trying to locate what is needed to lead our initiatives to success. Suely Enviado do Yahoo Mail no Android

Hi Everyone: I just wanted to let you know about an article I (and co-author Pete Brown) have in the new issue of Perspectives on Politics on the role of Wikileaks, Anonymous, and other “e-bandits” in global activism . Here is the link: http://journals.cambridge.org/action/displayJournal?jid=pps Here is the abstract for “E-Bandits in Global Activism: Wikileaks, Anonymous, and the Politics of No One." In recent years, WikiLeaks and Anonymous have made headlines distributing confidential information, defacing websites, and generating protest around political issues. Although many have dismissed these actors as terrorists, criminals, and troublemakers, we argue that such actors are emblematic of a new kind of political actor: extraordinary bandits (e-bandits) that engage in the politics of no one via anonymizing Internet technologies. Building on Hobsbawm's idea of the social bandit, we show how these actors fundamentally change the terms of global activism. First, as political actors, e-bandits are akin to Robin Hood, resisting the powers that be who threaten the desire to keep the Internet free, not through lobbying legislators, but by “taking” what has been deemed off limits. Second, e-banditry forces us to think about how technology changes “ordinary” transnational activism. Iconic images of street protests and massive marches often underlie the way we as scholars think about social movements and citizen action; they are ordinary ways we expect non-state actors to behave when they demand political change. E-bandits force us to understand political protest as virtual missives and actions, activity that leaves no physical traces but that has real-world consequences, as when home phone numbers and addresses of public officials are released. Finally, e-banditry is relatively open in terms of who participates, which contributes to the growing sense that activism has outgrown organizations as the way by which individuals connect. A modest proposal [was: Re: Open access and academia.edu]

Hi all In the last 24 hours several CFPs have been posted to this list, if I'm not mistaken all of which were for closed journals. We are enmeshed in the old ways: how do you shift the battleship? (As an aside, even if you have tenure, your performance is evaluated every year and you are expected to publish a certain number of papers in certain categories of journals. The same goes for when you apply for research grants, you have to point to a track record of publications.) So what can be done? We need to change the perception of what is "valuable". First - of course - publish and review for open access journals as much as possible. Second, a simple idea would be: when applying for a grant or writing a performance assessment, we should use the term "open access" as if it were as "valuable" and praiseworthy as "highly ranked". In other words open access should be framed as a central characteristic of excellence in scientific / academic publishing. The same goes for when we review others' research grant applications or promotion / job applications. Internet Research Methods Syllabus Inquiry

Hi fellow AoIR-ers, I am building a shiny new course at the graduate level that aims to tackle the topic of Internet Research Methods. I am already swimming in more ideas than I can handle about this course, and thought I would turn to this savvy crowd for some advice. Have any of you taught an Internet research methods course? If you have, what were your primary goals in the course? Did you focus primarily on qualitative methods, quantitative methods, or both? Did you critically examine methodological challenges for Internet research or focus primarily on the how tos of Internet research? I ask these questions because I am a bit torn about how to proceed. The topic of Internet research methods is really broad. Textbooks on the topic that I have found focus either only on qualitative approaches, typically critically examining the challenges of qualitative approaches when brought to the Internet. Or if the textbooks focus on quantitative approaches, they are primarily recipe books, like how to suck up and count behaviors online (think "data analytics" or "data science"). I am also a bit torn about whether it is better if the students already have a fairly good handle on traditional "offline" methods before they come into the class. This term, there won't be any prerequisites, but I wonder how much background would be helpful for students to have of methods generally in order to understand the challenges of Internet research. Porn Studies - CfP for Special issue - Audiences

Dear Colleagues Dr Sharif Mowlabocus (University of Sussex) and Professor William Leap (American University) are editing a special issue of Routledge’s new Porn Studies journal, scheduled for publication in May 2015 (issue 6). The issue will explore the multiple positions from which different audiences engage with pornographic material, and will include articles on research methods, political-economies of pornography and discourses of porn consumption. At the present time, the editors are seeking proposals for papers that specifically address the theme of women as consumers of pornography. Women have historically been underrepresented in discussions of porn consumption and porn audiences and we would like to use this special issue to address this imbalance. Beginning in 2014, the series will consist of two annual volumes bringing together cutting edge research on new media. Thanks to a short publication cycle, authors will see their work in print within 12 months of submission. The series welcomes work from a variety of perspectives from media scholars working in the social sciences, humanities, and related fields such as media studies, information studies, STS, and communication. Submissions may be empirical, theoretical, methodological, or synthetic statements of significant developments in the field. Empirical submissions may make use of any method or approach. Contributions on a wide variety of topics on new media, ICTs, communication, and related themes are welcome from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. For a list of potential themes, please see series' aims and scope. Volume I: Communication and Information Technologies Annual 2014 Each year, one volume will build on the series' newly established association with the Communication and Information Technologies Section of the American Sociological Association (CITASA). This annual volume will feature a selection of contributions that will be highlighted at each year's CITASA business meeting. Volume II: Doing and Being Digital: Mediated Childhoods Volume II will assemble cutting edge research focusing on media and youth. Submissions may examine any aspect of the theme of youth and media broadly defined. Youth is defined as infancy to young adulthood. We also welcome submissions on institutions that shape this part of the lifecourse such as the family, school, community organizations, etc. In addition, we are also interested in submissions that address theoretical and/or methodological issues on the topic. Submissions should be 6,000-12,000 words in length inclusive of abstract, references, and notes. British or American spelling may be used. While no special formatting is requested at the outset, upon acceptance authors must format their manuscripts in accordance with the series' guidelines. Submissions will be considered for inclusion in either volume to achieve the best thematic fit. Contributions will be peer-reviewed through both initial editorial screening and anonymous refereeing by at least two referees.
