Couch Internet Research Award 2014 Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research http://www.cccsir.com/ The Carl Couch Center issues an international call for student-authored papers to be considered for Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes both theoretical and empirical papers that apply symbolic interactionist approaches to internet studies. According to basic symbolic interactionist premises, what we understand as self, identity, relationship, and cultural formations are constructed dialogically and interactively. While the works of George H. Mead, Georg Simmel, Erving Goffman and other leading symbolic interactionists have been integral to the study of social interaction, Carl Couch was among the first from this tradition to suggest the importance of engaging in the study of mediated interaction. It is critical that symbolic interactionists move boldly forward, beyond Couch's initial suggestion, to study what has become for many a dominant form of communication in their everyday life. Whether we research identities, emotion, memory, family, work, career, presentations of self, deception, love, loss or other areas, the impact of mediated communication is felt by those interacting within it. As internet-related media continue to influence our everyday interactions--not only with other people but also with technologies, devices, algorithms, platform parameters, and so forth--it becomes crucial for symbolic interactionists to attend to the role of these mediating factors in the interaction process. We encourage any paper that uses a symbolic interactionist approach in internet studies. We also encourage papers that explore the interface between deliberate social interaction and structured (or automated) interactions sponsored or enacted by various technological features, exploring not only how identities, relations, and social formations are negotiated through social interactions, but also how these interactions are mediated further through the use or capacities of various technologies. Papers will be evaluated based on the quality of (1) mastery of symbolic interactionist approaches and concepts, (2) originality, (3) organization, (4) presentation, and (5) advancement of knowledge. Those contemplating entering should note that an interactionist approach demands thoughtful analysis, and not mere description, of social interactions. Evaluation will be administered by a Review Committee of four: Mark D. Johns, Luther College, Decorah, Iowa Jennifer Dunn, Texas Tech University, Lubbock Annette Markham, Umeå University, Sweden Camille Johnson-Yale, Lake Forest College, Illinois Competition is open to graduate or undergraduate students of all disciplines. Works that are published or accepted for publication are not eligible for award consideration. Entries should be in English and not exceed 30 pages (approximately 7500 words) in length, including references and appendices. Limit of one entry per student per year. The top paper will receive Couch Award to be presented at the 2014 meeting of the Association of Internet Researchers (aoir.org) in Bangkok, Thailand. The top paper will be awarded a certificate and a cash prize of $300 US and the author will be invited to present their work at a session of the AoIR conference, October 22-25, 2014 in Bangkok. Research student position in informatics/e-learning

The research student position is connected to an e-learning research initiative at Mid Sweden University in Östersund, Sweden. The research task of the licentiate will be carried out in the frame of the university’s e-learning research group, focusing on education and informatics. The employment is equivalent to two years full-time studies and aims to lead up to a Licentiate degree. The employment may be extended to a Doctoral degree, provided that additional funding is obtained. Today, learning with the support of technology, often called e-learning, is a fact in virtually all higher education. Thank you! ** Communication and “The Good Life” Around the World After Two Decades of the Digital Divide Partnership for Progress on the Digital Divide (PPDD) Preconference International Communication Association (ICA) 2014 Conference Seattle, Washington, USA Thursday, 22 May 2014 http://www.icahdq.org/conf/2014/aroundtheworldcfp.asp Call for Participation This interdisciplinary Preconference, sponsored by Partnership for Progress on the Digital Divide (PPDD), explores the nexus of the International Communication Association (ICA) Conference Theme of “The Good Life” and the issues of digital inclusion/exclusion for those who do not share the advantages of continuous connectivity. 2014 marks the 20th anniversary of the recognition of the digital divide through social scientific research. As the Internet became commonplace in the 1990s, officials in the Clinton Administration wondered if there should be concern about equity of access to computers and the Information Superhighway. As a result, based on the analysis of Census data about computer/modem ownership and usage collected in 1994, the newly created National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) prepared and released in 1995 the landmark report entitled "Falling Through the Net: A Survey of the 'Have Nots' in Rural and Urban America." From there, the discussion of the inequalities of online access as a new aspect of the larger issues of wealth and poverty began and the "Digital Divide” became a major focus in countries around the world. Recent research from scholars in, for example, the U.S., U.K., and Canada indicates that nearly 20 years later, even in the most highly developed countries around the world, as much as 20% of the population does not benefit from even minimal access to the Internet. And, that lack of consistent, quality access to emergent communication technologies is antithetical to the nature of a “good life” amidst the transformative changes enjoyed by members of the wired population; those who are offline are alienated from the benefits of the “new opportunities to communicate and interact . . . new experiences, behaviors, and habits . . . [and the ability to] engage with others or receive information” suggested by the ICA Conference Theme. Thus, this Preconference responds to ICA’s call to consider “what a ‘good life’ might look like in a contemporary, digital, and networked society, and what new challenges we might face in attaining it” to include all members of society. In the search for equity in access to “the good life” in the digital age, scholarly research has played a key role in the public discourse on the issues of the digital divide as well as in the decision-making by policymakers and practitioners as they work to craft solutions to this pressing societal concern. As the digital divide persists past its 20th anniversary, this Preconference provides an extended, in-depth opportunity to consider the current state and future possibilities for research that informs issues related to the digital divide around the world and works to identify new areas of necessary, productive research focus to foster greater understanding and enlighten practice and policy going forward so that all global citizens can create their own “good life” in the digital, networked age. After a brief welcome and summary introduction to the status of the digital divide around the world, the Preconference schedule features three 75-minute breakout time periods with multiple simultaneous sessions focusing on the status of communication, an inclusive “good life”, and digital divide research in various regions of the world. Involving scholars at all stages of their careers, these sessions will include research from any discipline and any theoretical and methodological approach that contributes to exploring the issues surrounding the digital divide. In addition, there will be a luncheon keynote. The relationship between Marshall McLuhan and the former 'Ryerson Institute of Technology' began in the early 1950s, and the latter was later to provide the venue where McLuhan accomplished much of the work for his "Project in Understanding New Media" (1960). Completed for the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, this work later formed the basis for his internationally renowned book Understanding Media (1964). A text in which McLuhan articulates his sense of the socio-cultural role that creativity and 'integral awareness' must play for future human survival, the 50th anniversary of its first publication coincides with our convention, which invites papers, panels, creative projects, and other proposals presenting research and/or exploring topics and ideas related to the convention theme. Neil Postman's neologism 'Technopoly' - roughly what Jacques Ellul calls 'La Technique' and what McLuhan refers to as 'technological trauma' - is a rich concept. Denoting the digital age cultural conditions characterised by elements such as scientific management, scientism, information overload, and other forms of socio-technical conflict, it also includes the contemporary moral crisis associated with 'autonomous technology', corporatism, Pentagon capitalism, totalitarian technocracy, and American global hegemony. "Nature and history seem to have agreed to designate us in Canada for a corporate, artistic role," McLuhan wrote in the late 1970s. "As the U.S.A. becomes a world environment through its resources, technology, and enterprises, Canada takes on the function of making that world environment perceptible to those who occupy it". In the Canadian spirit, then, let us collectively probe the phenomenon of Technopoly in relation to any topics, but with particular interest in how creativity and the cultural or creative industries might evolve in relation to it, and possibly serve to neutralise its toxic effects. Though priority will be given to submissions that touch upon or reflect the conference theme, all abstracts for papers, panel proposal submissions, etc. that address media ecological topics are welcome. No more than two submissions per author will be accepted, and authors who wish to be considered for the Top Paper or Top Student Paper awards should submit complete manuscripts and indicate the award for which they are applying. The convention site - located in the heart of Toronto's downtown core - is easily accessed by both ground and air transportation, and proximate to most of the city's major attractions. Those visiting Toronto from afar may also appreciate visiting nearby Niagara Falls at the Canada/U.S. border - an environment inscribed by some as one of the 'seven wonders of the world'. Anyone who has any disagreement with Elsevier on any issue: copyright, OA policies, hybrid journals, OA pricing, pricing in general, control of backfiles, text mining, any of a myriad of issues including, their crazy if you mandate it you can't do it IR policy and their standard refusal to permit re-printing "their" research, should publicize this far and wide. Elsevier, no matter what they say, has demonstrated beyond any reasonable doubt in this action, their limited understanding of their remit, their control of scholarly research, They are nobody's friend's except their shareholders. They have demonstrated their DNA, their belief in their right to control the content scholars and researchers create and publish with Elsevier. They are wrong. What copyright law says is irrelevant in this, what authors want to do with their own research is paramount. It might have been masked before under the guise of impact factors and collegial editorial board meetings in locations worldwide and smart as a whip editors, and outreach at conferences, and invitations to "publish your research with us" and PR, and more or less "green" OA policies, and excellent inhouse readings of directions in future trends, and all the other trappings and expertise they have in academic publishing which is at the top of its game. Those trapping are insufficient. Elsevier and its cynical relationship with authors and institutions, has been demonstrated by Elsevier itself. No one could have done this to them but themselves. The tide of OA, of authors making sure people who need to see it, get to read their research, OA in all its guises, is inexorable and if handled correctly even by such behemoths as Elsevier, will lift all boats in the publishing stream, despite the scaremongers and naysayers in publishing, or the mistaken advice of some in libraries, or even among OA advocates themselves. It's logic is persuasive, its goals commensurate ultimately with what authors want for their own research. To put up and enforce barriers to what scholars want to distribute that they themselves produce is antediluvian. Elsevier's unforced error may be more effective than any boycott. How do we distinguish what we do? What’s the nature of our particular cultural work? Where should we expand our horizons, and where should we hold whatever lines we've drawn? > > CONFERENCE > > For the Conference we welcome contributions that address identity, purpose, and future development, along with other concerns including, but not limited to, history, critique, theory, reception, and social situation. Proposals will most likely describe a scholarly presentation suitable for delivery in about 20 minutes, with time for questions. Other presentation formats are welcome and should be described in the proposal. > > Proposers must attend the conference. > > Presentations may include elements of demonstration or performance, as part of a discussion that goes beyond the work itself. With this stipulation, proposers are welcome to address their own work. > > We invite proposals of no more than 500 words, including a brief description of the content and format of the presentation, and contact information for the presenter(s). Please identify submissions for the Show as such. > > The Committee especially welcomes submissions from artists who are new to electronic literature or who are in the beginning stages of their e-literary artistic production. Limited funds will be available to support artists presenting work at the Show, or in local galleries as part of the Show. Artists need not attend the Conference in order to show work. > > Some works selected for inclusion in the Media Arts Show will also be designated for live performance. Please indicate such a willingness in your proposal. Skype or other virtual presentation modes will not be permitted for artistic works. > > A virtual Festival of E-Literature First Encounters will gather works produced by students or others who are making e-lit for the first time. We hope all faculty will encourage their students to submit work for consideration. The deadline for submission to the Festival of E-Literature First Encounters is 1 February 2014. > > All Media Arts proposals should be no more than 500 words, including a brief description of the content and format of the presentation and contact information for the presenter(s). Please limit your submissions to one work per artist. If you're a member of a collaboration, artists may submit one collaborative work and one individual work for consideration. If you're a member of more than one collaboration and wish to submit multiple collaborative works, please query us in advance of the deadline to discuss the volume of work you'd like to submit.
